We compute the kinetic energy of the Langevin particle using different approaches. We build stochastic differential equations that describe this physical quantity based on both the Itô and Stratonovich stochastic integrals. It is shown that the Itô equation possesses a unique solution whereas the Stratonovich one possesses infinitely many, all but one absent of physical meaning. We discuss how this fact matches with the existent discussion on the Itô vs Stratonovich dilemma and the apparent preference towards the Stratonovich interpretation in the physical literature.
We consider an infinite chain of coupled harmonic oscillators with a Langevin thermostat attached at the origin and energy, momentum and volume conserving noise that models the collisions between atoms. The noise is rarefied in the limit, {that corresponds to the hypothesis} that in the macroscopic unit time only a finite number of collisions takes place (Boltzmann-Grad limit). We prove that, after the hyperbolic space-time rescaling, the Wigner distribution, describing the energy density of phonons in space-frequency domain, converges to a positive energy density function $W(t, y, k)$ that ev…
We study the simulated annealing algorithm based on the kinetic Langevin dynamics, in order to find the global minimum of a non-convex potential function. For both the continuous time formulation and a discrete time analogue, we obtain the convergence rate results under technical conditions on the potential function, together with an appropriate choice of the cooling schedule and the time discretization parameters.
Langevin diffusion processes and their discretizations are often used for sampling from a target density. The most convenient framework for assessing the quality of such a sampling scheme corresponds to smooth and strongly log-concave densities defined on $\mathbb R^p$. The present work focuses on this framework and studies the behavior of Monte Carlo algorithms based on discretizations of the kinetic Langevin diffusion. We first prove the geometric mixing property of the kinetic Langevin diffusion with a mixing rate that is, in the overdamped regime, optimal in terms of its dependence on the …

In this article we consider sampling from log concave distributions in Hamiltonian setting, without assuming that the objective gradient is globally Lipschitz. We propose two algorithms based on monotone polygonal (tamed) Euler schemes, to sample from a target measure, and provide non-asymptotic 2-Wasserstein distance bounds between the law of the process of each algorithm and the target measure. Finally, we apply these results to bound the excess risk optimization error of the associated optimization problem.
For the Langevin model of the dynamics of a Brownian particle with perturbations orthogonal to its current velocity, in a regime when the particle velocity modulus becomes constant, an equation for the characteristic function $ψ(t,λ)=M\left[\exp (λ,x(t))/V={\rm v}(0)\right]$ of the position $x(t)$ of the Brownian particle. The obtained results confirm the conclusion that the model of the dynamics of a Brownian particle, which constructed on the basis of an unconventional physical interpretation of the Langevin equations, i. e. stochastic equations with orthogonal influences, leads to the inter…
We introduce a new probabilistic approach to quantify convergence to equilibrium for (kinetic) Langevin processes. In contrast to previous analytic approaches that focus on the associated kinetic Fokker-Planck equation, our approach is based on a specific combination of reflection and synchronous coupling of two solutions of the Langevin equation. It yields contractions in a particular Wasserstein distance, and it provides rather precise bounds for convergence to equilibrium at the borderline between the overdamped and the underdamped regime. In particular, we are able to recover kinetic behav…
We consider classical solutions to the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation on a bounded domain $\mathcal O \subset~\mathbb{R}^d$ in position, and we obtain a probabilistic representation of the solutions using the Langevin diffusion process with absorbing boundary conditions on the boundary of the phase-space cylindrical domain $D = \mathcal O \times \mathbb{R}^d$. Furthermore, a Harnack inequality, as well as a maximum principle, is provided on $D$ for solutions to this kinetic Fokker-Planck equation, together with the existence of a smooth transition density for the associated absorbed Langevin p…
We construct an infinite particle/infinite volume Langevin dynamics on the space of configurations in $\R^d$ having velocities as marks. The construction is done via a limiting procedure using $N$-particle dynamics in cubes $(-λ,λ]^d$ with periodic boundary conditions. A main step to this result is to derive an (improved) Ruelle bound for the canonical correlation functions of $N$-particle systems in $(-λ,λ]^d$ with periodic boundary conditions. After proving tightness of the laws of finite particle dynamics, the identification of accumulation points as martingale solutions of the Langevin equ…
In this paper, we prove convergence in distribution of Langevin processes in the overdamped asymptotics. The proof relies on the classical perturbed test function (or corrector) method, which is used both to show tightness in path space, and to identify the extracted limit with a martingale problem. The result holds assuming the continuity of the gradient of the potential energy, and a mild control of the initial kinetic energy.
We consider a Langevin process with white noise random forcing. We suppose that the energy of the particle is instantaneously absorbed when it hits some fixed obstacle. We show that nonetheless, the particle can be instantaneously reflected, and study some properties of this reflecting solution.
The convergence of the kinetic Langevin simulated annealing is proven under mild assumptions on the potential $U$ for slow logarithmic cooling schedules. Moreover, non-convergence for fast logarithmic and non-logarithmic cooling schedules is established. The results are based on an adaptation to non-elliptic non-reversible kinetic settings of a localization/local convergence strategy developed by Fournier and Tardif in the overdamped elliptic case, and on precise quantitative high order Sobolev hypocoercive estimates.
