Dust continuum observation is one of the best methods to constrain the properties of protoplanetary disks. Recent theoretical studies have suggested that the dust scattering at the millimeter wavelength potentially reduces the observed intensity, which results in an underestimate in the dust mass. We investigate whether the dust scattering indeed reduces the observed continuum intensity by comparing the ALMA archival data of the TW Hya disk at Band 3, 4, 6, 7 and 9 to models obtained by radiative transfer simulations. We find that the model with scattering by 300 ${\rm μm}$-sized grains well reproduces the observed SED of the central part of the TW Hya disk while the model without scattering is also consistent within the errors of the absolute fluxes. To explain the intensity at Band 3, the dust surface density needs to be $\sim$ 10 ${\rm g\,cm^{-2}}$ at 10 au in the model with scattering, which is 26 times more massive than previously predicted. The model without scattering needs 2.3 times higher dust mass than the model with scattering because it needs lower temperature. At Band 7, scattering reduces the intensity by $\sim$ 35% which makes the disk looks optically thin even though it is optically thick. Our study suggests the TW Hya disk is still capable of forming cores of giant planets at where the current solar system planets exist.
We observe a significant change in the TW Hya disk interior to 40~AU via archival unpolarized multi-wavelength Hubble Space Telescope/STIS and NICMOS images with an inner working angle (IWA) of 0\farcs4 (22~AU). Our images show the outer edge of a clearing at every wavelength with similar behavior, demonstrating that the feature is structural, rather than due to some property of polarized light in the disk. We compare our observations to those taken by Akiyama et al. (2015) and Rapson et al. (2015), and discuss the spectral evolution of the disk interior to 80~AU. We construct a model with two…
Gas giants accrete their envelopes from the gas and dust of proto-planetary disks, so it is important to determine the composition of the inner few AU, where most giant planets are expected to form. We aim to constrain the elemental carbon and oxygen abundance in the inner disk ($R<$2.3 AU) of TW Hya and compare with the outer disk ($R>2.3$ AU) where carbon and oxygen appear underabundant by a factor of $\sim$50. Archival infrared observations of TW Hya are compared with a detailed thermo-chemical model, DALI. The inner disk gas mass and elemental C and O abundances are varied to fit the infra…
Molecular D/H ratios are frequently used to probe the chemical past of Solar System volatiles. Yet it is unclear which parts of the Solar Nebula hosted an active deuterium fractionation chemistry. To address this question, we present 0".2-0".4 ALMA observations of DCO+ and DCN 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 towards the nearby protoplanetary disk around TW Hya, taken as part of the TW Hya Rosetta Stone project, augmented with archival data. DCO+ is characterized by an excitation temperature of ~40 K across the 70 au radius pebble disk, indicative of emission from a warm, elevated molecular layer. Tentatively…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of TW Hya at 3.1 mm with $\sim50$ milliarcsecond resolution. These new data were combined with archival high angular resolution ALMA observations at 0.87 mm, 1.3 mm, and 2.1 mm. We analyze these multi-wavelength data to infer a disk radial profile of the dust surface density, maximum particle size, and slope of the particle size distribution. Most previously known annular substructures in the disk of TW Hya are resolved at the four wavelengths. Inside the inner 3 au cavity, the 2.1 mm and 3.1 mm images show a compact source of free-…
We present high angular resolution (down to 0.3" = 13 AU in diameter) Submillimeter Array observations of the 880 micron (340 GHz) thermal continuum emission from circumstellar dust disks in the nearby HD 98800 and Hen 3-600 multiple star systems. In both cases, the dust emission is resolved and localized around one stellar component - the HD 98800 B and Hen 3-600 A spectroscopic binaries - with no evidence for circum-system material. Using two-dimensional Monte Carlo radiative transfer calculations, we compare the SMA visibilities and broadband spectral energy distributions with truncated dis…
We present high resolution (0.3" = 16 AU), high signal-to-noise ratio Submillimeter Array observations of the 870 microns (345 GHz) continuum and CO J=3--2 line emission from the protoplanetary disk around TW Hya. Using continuum and line radiative transfer calculations, those data and the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution are analyzed together in the context of simple two-dimensional parametric disk structure models. Under the assumptions of a radially invariant dust population and (vertically integrated) gas-to-dust mass ratio, we are unable to simultaneously reproduce the CO and …
Volatile molecules are critical to terrestrial planetary habitability, yet difficult to observe directly where planets form at the midplanes of protoplanetary disks. It is unclear whether the inner 1 AU of disks are volatile-poor or if this region is resupplied with ice-rich dust from colder disk regions. Dust traps at radial pressure maxima bounding disk gaps can cut off the inner disk from such volatile reservoirs. However, the trap retention efficiency and atomic composition of trapped dust have not been measured. We present a new technique to measure the absolute atomic abundances in gas a…
We fit an isothermal oscillatory density model to the disk of HD 163296 in which planets have presumably already formed and they are orbiting at least within the four observed dark gaps. This 156 AU large axisymmetric disk shows various physical properties comparable to those of AS 209, HL Tau, and TW Hya that we have modeled previously; but it compares best to AS 209. The disks of HD 163296 and AS 209 are comparable in size and they share similar values of the power-law index $k\approx 0$ (a radial density profile of the form $ρ(R)\propto R^{-1}$), the rotational parameter $β_0$ (to within a …
We have obtained new images of the protoplanetary disk orbiting TW Hya in visible, total intensity light with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), using the newly commissioned BAR5 occulter. These HST/STIS observations achieved an inner working angle $\sim$0.2\arcsec, or 11.7~AU, probing the system at angular radii coincident with recent images of the disk obtained by ALMA and in polarized intensity near-infrared light. By comparing our new STIS images to those taken with STIS in 2000 and with NICMOS in 1998, 2004, and 2005, we demonstrate that T…
We present an observational reconstruction of the radial water vapor content near the surface of the TW Hya transitional protoplanetary disk, and report the first localization of the snow line during this phase of disk evolution. The observations are comprised of Spitzer-IRS, Herschel-PACS, and Herschel-HIFI archival spectra. The abundance structure is retrieved by fitting a two-dimensional disk model to the available star+disk photometry and all observed H2O lines, using a simple step-function parameterization of the water vapor content near the disk surface. We find that water vapor is abund…
We have carried out an ALMA survey of 15 confirmed or candidate low-mass (<0.2M$_\odot$) members of the TW Hya Association (TWA) with the goal of detecting molecular gas in the form of CO emission, as well as providing constraints on continuum emission due to cold dust. Our targets have spectral types of M4-L0 and hence represent the extreme low end of the TWA's mass function. Our ALMA survey has yielded detections of 1.3mm continuum emission around 4 systems (TWA 30B, 32, 33, & 34), suggesting the presence of cold dust grains. All continuum sources are unresolved. TWA 34 further shows 12CO(2-…
CO is widely used as a tracer of molecular gas. However, there is now mounting evidence that gas phase carbon is depleted in the disk around TW Hya. Previous efforts to quantify this depletion have been hampered by uncertainties regarding the radial thermal structure in the disk. Here we present resolved ALMA observations of 13CO 3-2, C18O 3-2, 13CO 6-5, and C18O 6-5 emission in TW Hya, which allow us to derive radial gas temperature and gas surface density profiles, as well as map the CO abundance as a function of radius. These observations provide a measurement of the surface CO snowline at …
Recent observations of HL Tau revealed remarkably detailed structure within the system's circumstellar disc. A range of hypotheses have been proposed to explain the morphology, including, e.g., planet-disc interactions, condensation fronts, and secular gravitational instabilities. While embedded planets seem to be able to explain some of the major structure in the disc through interactions with gas and dust, the substructure, such as low-contrast rings and bands, are not so easily reproduced. Here, we show that dynamical interactions between three planets (only two of which are modelled) and a…
We present a high-resolution (2.5 au) multiband analysis of the protoplanetary disk around TW Hya using ALMA long baseline data at Bands 3, 4, 6, and 7. We aim to reconstruct a high-sensitivity millimeter continuum image and revisit the spectral index distribution. The imaging is performed by combining new ALMA data at Bands 4 and 6 with available archive data. Two methods are employed to reconstruct the images; multi-frequency synthesis (MFS) and the fiducial image-oriented method, where each band is imaged separately and the frequency dependence is fitted pixel by pixel. We find that the MFS…
We report the first detection of a gap and a ring in 336 GHz dust continuum emission from the protoplanetary disk around TW Hya, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). The gap and ring are located at around 25 and 41 au from the central star, respectively, and are associated with the CO snow line at ~30 au. The gap has a radial width of less than 15 au and a mass deficit of more than 23%, taking into account that the observations are limited to an angular resolution of ~15 au. In addition, the 13CO and C18O J = 3 - 2 lines show a decrement in CO line emission throughout…
We present ALMA Cycle~2 observations at $0.5^{\prime\prime}$ resolution of TW Hya of CS $J=5-4$ emission. The radial profile of the integrated line emission displays oscillatory features outwards of $1.5^{\prime\prime}$ ($\approx 90$ au). A dip-like feature at $1.6^{\prime\prime}$ is coincident in location, depth and width with features observed in dust scattered light at near-infrared wavelengths. Using a thermochemical model indicative of TW Hya, gas-grain chemical modelling and non-LTE radiative transfer, we demonstrate that such a feature can be reproduced with a surface density depression…
We compare line emission calculated from theoretical disk models with optical to sub-millimeter wavelength observational data of the gas disk surrounding TW Hya and infer the spatial distribution of mass in the gas disk. The model disk that best matches observations has a gas mass ranging from $\sim10^{-4}-10^{-5}$\ms\ for $0.06{\rm AU} <r<3.5$AU and $\sim 0.06$\ms\ for $ 3.5 {\rm AU} <r<200$AU. We find that the inner dust hole ($r<3.5$AU) in the disk must be depleted of gas by $\sim 1-2$ orders of magnitude compared to the extrapolated surface density distribution of the outer disk. Grain gro…
Planetary systems are thought to be born in protoplanetary disks. Isotope ratios are a powerful tool for investigating the material origin and evolution from molecular clouds to planetary systems via protoplanetary disks. However, it is challenging to measure the isotope (isotopologue) ratios, especially in protoplanetary disks, because the emission lines of major species are saturated. We developed a new method to overcome these challenges by using optically thin line wings induced by thermal broadening. As a first application of the method, we analyzed two carbon monoxide isotopologue lines,…
The composition of planetary solids and gases is largely rooted in the processing of volatile elements in protoplanetary disks. To shed light on the key processes, we carry out a comparative analysis of the gas-phase carbon abundance in two systems with a similar age and disk mass, but different central stars: HD 100546 and TW Hya. We combine our recent detections of C$^{0}$ in these disks with observations of other carbon reservoirs (CO, C$^{+}$, C$_{2}$H) and gas mass and warm gas tracers (HD, O$^{0}$), as well as spatially resolved ALMA observations and the spectral energy distribution. The…
Previous observations have shown that the $\lesssim$10 au, $\gtrsim$400 K hot inner disk of the archetypal accretion outburst young stellar object, FU Ori, is dominated by viscous heating. To constrain dust properties in this region, we have performed radio observations toward this disk using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) in 2020 June-July, September, and November. We also performed complementary optical photometric monitoring observations. We found that the dust thermal emission from the hot inner disk mid-plane of FU Ori has been approximately stationary and the maximum dust gra…
Formaldehyde (H$_2$CO) is an important precursor to organics like methanol (CH$_3$OH). It is important to understand the conditions that produce H$_2$CO and prebiotic molecules during star and planet formation. H$_2$CO possesses both gas-phase and solid-state formation pathways, involving either UV-produced radical precursors or CO ice and cold ($\lesssim 20$ K) dust grains. To understand which pathway dominates, gaseous H$_2$CO's ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) has been used as a probe, with a value of 3 indicating "warm" conditions and $<3$ linked to cold formation in the solid-state. We present s…
The first detection of gas-phase methanol in a protoplanetary disk (TW Hya) is presented. In addition to being one of the largest molecules detected in disks to date, methanol is also the first disk organic molecule with an unambiguous ice chemistry origin. The stacked methanol emission, as observed with ALMA, is spectrally resolved and detected across six velocity channels ($>3 σ$), reaching a peak signal-to-noise of $5.5σ$, with the kinematic pattern expected for TW~Hya. Using an appropriate disk model, a fractional abundance of $3\times 10^{-12} - 4 \times 10^{-11}$ (with respect to H$_2$) …
Turbulence is a fundamental parameter in models of grain growth during the early stages of planet formation. As such, observational constraints on its magnitude are crucial. Here we self-consistently analyze ALMA CO(2-1), SMA CO(3-2), and SMA CO(6-5) observations of the disk around TW Hya and find an upper limit on the turbulent broadening of $<$0.08c$_s$ ($α<$0.007 for $α$ defined only within 2-3 pressure scale heights above the midplane), lower than the tentative detection previously found from an analysis of the CO(2-1) data. We examine in detail the challenges of image plane fitting vs dir…
We report two-dimensional spectroastrometry of Br gamma emission of TW Hya to study the kinematics of the ionized gas in the star-disk interface region. The spectroastrometry with the integral field spectrograph SINFONI at the Very Large Telescope is sensitive to the positional offset of the line emission down to the physical scale of the stellar diameter (~0.01 AU). The centroid of Br gamma emission is displaced to the north with respect to the central star at the blue side of the emission line, and to the south at the red side. The major axis of the centroid motion is P.A.= -20 degrees, whic…

We explore in situ formation and subsequent evolution of close-in super-Earths and mini-Neptunes. We adopt a steady-state inner protoplanetary gas disc structure that arises from viscous accretion due to the magneto-rotational instability (MRI). We consider the evolution of dust in the inner disc, including growth, radial drift and fragmentation, and find that dust particles that radially drift into the inner disc fragment severely due to the MRI-induced turbulence. This result has two consequences: (1) radial drift of grains within the inner disc is quenched, leading to an enhancement of dust…
We present Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) adaptive optics near-infrared images of the giant planet-forming regions of the protoplanetary disk orbiting the nearby (D = 54 pc), pre-main sequence (classical T Tauri) star TW Hydrae. The GPI images, which were obtained in coronagraphic/polarimetric mode, exploit starlight scattered off small dust grains to elucidate the surface density structure of the TW Hya disk from 80 AU to within 10 AU of the star at 1.5 AU resolution. The GPI polarized intensity images unambiguously confirm the presence of a gap in the radial surface brightness distribution of th…
Debris disk morphology is wavelength dependent due to the wide range of particle sizes and size-dependent dynamics influenced by various forces. Resolved images of nearby debris disks reveal complex disk structures that are difficult to distinguish from their spectral energy distributions. Therefore, multi-wavelength resolved images of nearby debris systems provide an essential foundation to understand the intricate interplay between collisional, gravitational, and radiative forces that govern debris disk structures. We present the SOFIA 35 um resolved disk image of epsilon Eri, the closest de…
Short-period super-Earth-sized planets are common. Explaining how they form near their present orbits requires understanding the structure of the inner regions of protoplanetary discs. Previous studies have argued that the hot inner protoplanetary disc is unstable to the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) due to thermal ionization of potassium, and that a local gas pressure maximum forms at the outer edge of this MRI-active zone. Here we present a steady-state model for inner discs accreting viscously, primarily due to the MRI. The structure and MRI-viscosity of the inner disc are fully coup…
[Abridged] Snowlines in protoplanetary disks play an important role in planet formation and composition. Since the CO snowline is difficult to observe directly with CO emission, its location has been inferred in several disks from spatially resolved ALMA observations of DCO+ and N2H+. N2H+ is considered to be a good tracer of the CO snowline based on astrochemical considerations predicting an anti-correlation between N2H+ and gas-phase CO. In this work, the robustness of N2H+ as a tracer of the CO snowline is investigated. A simple chemical network is used in combination with the radiative tra…
In protoplanetary disks, the differential gravity-driven settling of dust grains with respect to gas and with respect to grains of varying sizes determines the observability of grains, and sets the conditions for grain growth and eventually planet formation. In this work we explore the effect of photophoresis on the settling of large dust grains in the inner regions of actively accreting protoplanetary disks. Photophoretic forces on dust grains result from the collision of gas molecules with differentially heated grains. We undertake one dimensional dust settling calculations to determine the …
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of a protoplanetary disk around the T Tauri star Sz~84 and analyses of the structures of the inner cavity in the central region of the dust disk. Sz~84's spectral energy distribution (SED) has been known to exhibit negligible infrared excess at $λ\lesssim$10~$μ$m due to the disk's cavity structure. Analyses of the observed visibilities of dust continuum at 1.3~mm and the SED indicate that the size of the cavity in the disk of large (millimeter size) dust grains is 8~au in radius and that in the disk of small (sub-micro…
We report observations of resolved C2H emission rings within the gas-rich protoplanetary disks of TW Hya and DM Tau using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). In each case the emission ring is found to arise at the edge of the observable disk of mm-sized grains (pebbles) traced by (sub)mm-wave continuum emission. In addition, we detect a C3H2 emission ring with an identical spatial distribution to C2H in the TW Hya disk. This suggests that these are hydrocarbon rings (i.e. not limited to C2H). Using a detailed thermo-chemical model we show that reproducing the emission from C2H requires …
We present arcsecond-resolution Submillimeter Array (SMA) polarimetric observations of the 880 um continuum emission from the protoplanetary disks around two nearby stars, HD 163296 and TW Hydrae. Although previous observations and theoretical work have suggested that a 2-3% polarization fraction should be common for the millimeter continuum emission from such disks, we detect no polarized continuum emission above a 3-sigma upper limit of 7 mJy in each arcsecond-scale beam, or <1% in integrated continuum emission. We compare the SMA upper limits with the predictions from the exploratory Cho & …
We perform simulations of the dust and gas disk evolution to investigate the observational features of a dust-pileup at the dead-zone inner edge. We show that the total mass of accumulated dust particles is sensitive to the turbulence strength in the dead zone, $α_{\rm dead}$, because of the combined effect of turbulence-induced particle fragmentation (which suppresses particle radial drift) and turbulent diffusion. For a typical critical fragmentation velocity of silicate dust particles of $1~{\rm m~s^{-1}}$, the stress to pressure ratio $α_{\rm dead}$ needs to be lower than $3 \times 10^{-4}…
Close-in super-Earths are the most abundant exoplanets known. It has been hypothesized that they form in the inner regions of protoplanetary discs, out of the dust that may accumulate at the boundary between the inner region susceptible to the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) and an MRI-dead zone further out. In Paper I we presented a model for the viscous inner disc which includes heating due to both irradiation and MRI-driven accretion; thermal and non-thermal ionization; dust opacities; and dust effects on ionization. Here we examine how the inner disc structure varies with stellar, dis…
We present 870 $μ$m ALMA polarization observation toward the Class I\hspace{-.1em}I protoplanetary disk around AS 209, which has concentric, multiple gaps and rings. We successfully detect the polarized emission and find that the polarization orientations and fractions have distinct characteristics between the inner and outer regions. In the inner region, the polarization orientations are parallel to the minor axis of the disk, which is consistent with the self-scattering model. The mean polarization fraction in the region is $\sim$0.2\%, which is lower than the expected value when the grains …
Correlation between accretion rate and free-free emission in protoplanetary disks -- A multi-wavelength analysis of central mm/cm emission in transition disks
We present Spitzer/IRS spectra of 31 TTS and IRAM/1.3mm observations for 34 low- and intermediate-mass stars in the Cep OB2 region. Including our previously published data, we analyze 56 TTS and the 3 intermediate-mass stars with silicate features in Tr 37 (~4 Myr) and NGC 7160 (~12 Myr). The silicate emission features are well reproduced with a mixture of amorphous (with olivine, forsterite, and silica stoichiometry) and crystalline grains (forsterite, enstatite). We explore grain size and disk structure using radiative transfer disk models, finding that most objects have suffered substantial…
We report the first detection of the molecule cyanomethyl, CH$_2$CN, in a protoplanetary disk. Until now, CH$_2$CN had only been observed at earlier evolutionary stages, in the giant molecular clouds TMC-1 and Sgr 2, and the prestellar core L1544. We detect six transitions of ortho-CH$_2$CN towards the disk around nearby T Tauri star TW Hya. An excitation analysis reveals that the disk-averaged column density, $N$, for ortho-CH$_2$CN is $(6.3\pm 0.5)\times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$, which is rescaled to reflect a 3:1 ortho-para ratio, resulting in a total column density, $N_{\rm tot}$, of $(8.4\pm 0.7…
We model the behaviour of dust grains entrained by photoevaporation-driven winds from protoplanetary discs assuming a non-rotating, plane-parallel disc. We obtain an analytic expression for the maximum entrainable grain size in extreme-UV radiation-driven winds, which we demonstrate to be proportional to the mass loss rate of the disc. When compared with our hydrodynamic simulations, the model reproduces almost all of the wind properties for the gas and dust. In typical turbulent discs, the entrained grain sizes in the wind are smaller than the theoretical maximum everywhere but the inner disc…
We present new observations of CO J=2-1 emission from the protoplanetary disk around TW Hya. Emission is detected out to 240 au (4") and found to exhibit azimuthal variations up to 20% beyond 180 au (3"), with the west side of the disk brighter than the east. This asymmetry is interpreted as tracing the shadow previously seen in scattered light. A reanalysis of the multi-epoch observations of the dust shadow in scattered light from Debes et al. (2017) suggests that an oscillatory motion would provide a better model of the temporal evolution of the dust shadow rather than orbital motion. Both m…
The gas surface density profile of protoplanetary disks is one of the most fundamental physical properties to understand planet formation. However, it is challenging to determine the surface density profile observationally, because the H$_2$ emission cannot be observed in low-temperature regions. We analyzed the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) archival data of the \co line toward the protoplanetary disk around TW Hya and discovered extremely broad line wings due to the pressure broadening. In conjunction with a previously reported optically thin CO isotopologue line, the pr…
We present new 0.6 - 4 $μ$m imaging of the SR 21 transition disk from Keck/NIRC2 and Magellan/MagAO. The protoplanetary disk around SR 21 has a large (~ 30 - 40 AU) clearing first inferred from its spectral energy distribution and later detected in sub-millimeter imaging. Both the gas and small dust grains are known to have a different morphology, with an inner truncation in CO at ~7 AU, and micron-sized dust detected within the millimeter clearing. Previous near-infrared imaging could not distinguish between an inner dust disk with a truncation at ~7 AU or one that extended to the sublimation…
On November 4th, 2010, the Deep Impact eXtended Investigation (DIXI) successfully encountered comet 103P/Hartley 2, when it was at a heliocentric distance of 1.06 AU. Spatially resolved near-IR spectra of comet Hartley 2 were acquired in the 1.05-4.83 micron wavelength range using the HRI-IR spectrometer. We present spectral maps of the inner ~10 kilometers of the coma collected 7 minutes and 23 minutes after closest approach. The extracted reflectance spectra include well-defined absorption bands near 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0 micron consistent in position, bandwidth, and shape with the presence of w…
The solar wind carves a bubble in the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM), known as the heliosphere. Charged interstellar dust grains (ISDG) encountering the heliosphere may be diverted around the heliopause or penetrate it depending on their charge-to-mass ratio. We present new calculations of trajectories of ISDG in the heliosphere, and the dust density distributions that result. We include up-to-date grain charging calculations using a realistic UV radiation field and full 3-D magnetohydrodynamic fluid + kinetic models for the heliosphere. Models with two different (constant) polarities f…
