We study the lead rhenium oxide PbRe2O6 as a candidate spin-orbit-coupled metal (SOCM), which has attracted much attention as a testing ground for studying unconventional Fermi liquid instability associated with a large spin-orbit interaction. The compound comprises a stack of modulated honeycomb lattices made of Re5+ (5d2) ions in a centrosymmetric R-3m structure at room temperature. Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements using single crystals reveal two successive first-order phase transitions at Ts1 = 265 K and Ts2 = 123 K. At Ts1, the magnetic susceptibility is enormously reduced and a structural transition to a monoclinic structure takes place, while relatively small changes are observed at Ts2. Surprisingly, PbRe2O6 bears a close resemblance to another SOCM candidate Cd2Re2O7 despite crucial differences in the crystal structure and probably in the electronic structure, suggesting that PbRe2O6 is an SOCM.
We summarize some characteristic features of the frustrated magnetic interactions in spin-orbital models adequate for cubic transition metal oxides with orbital degeneracy. A generic tendency towards dimerization, found already in the degenerate Hubbard model, is confirmed for $t_{2g}$ but not for $e_g$ systems. In the $t_{2g}$ case the quantum orbital fluctuations are more pronounced and contribute to a stronger competition between different magnetic and orbital states. Therefore the orbital liquid states exist in some undoped $t_{2g}$ systems, while in the manganites such states can be trigg…
Resonant x-ray diffraction experiments were performed for the metallic iridium oxide IrO$_{2}$. We observed anisotropic tensor of susceptibility (ATS) scattering, the spectrum of which shows a sharp contrast between the $L_{3}$ and $L_{2}$ edges. At the $L_{3}$ edge, resonance excitations were clearly observed from the core 2$p$ orbitals to both the 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ and $e_{g}$ orbitals. In contrast, the resonance mode associated with 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals was indiscernible at the $L_{2}$ edge. This contrasting behavior indicates that Ir 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals are fairly close to the $J_{\rm eff…
We discuss the notions of spin-orbital polarization and ordering in paramagnetic materials, and address their consequences in transition metal oxides. Extending the combined density functional and dynamical mean field theory scheme to the case of materials with large spin-orbit interactions, we investigate the electronic excitations of the paramagnetic phases of Sr2IrO4 and Sr2RhO4. We show that the interplay of spin-orbit interactions, structural distortions and Coulomb interactions suppresses spin-orbital fluctuations. As a result, the room temperature phase of Sr2IrO4 is a paramagnetic spin…
In this paper, based on the formulation of an O(3) non-linear sigma model, we study the two-dimensional Pi-flux Hubbard model at half-filling. A quantum non-magnetic insulator is explored near the metal-insulator transition that may be a possible candidate of the spin liquid state. Such quantum non-magnetic insulator on square lattice is not induced by frustrations. Instead, it originates from quantum spin fluctuations with relatively small effective spin moments. In the strong-coupling limit, our results of the spin velocity and spin order parameter agree with results obtained from earlier ca…
The class of transition metal compounds shows an enormous richness of physical properties, such as metal-insulator transitions, colossal magneto-resistance, super-conductivity, magneto-optics and spin-depend transport. It now becomes more and more clear that in order to describe transition metal compounds the charge, orbital, spin and lattice degrees of freedom should all be taken into account. With the recognition that the local orbital occupation plays an important role in many of the transition metal compounds there is a need for experimental techniques that can measure the orbital occupati…
To describe the metal insulator transition in the new oxide TlSr2CoO5 we investigate its electronic structure by LDA and model Hartree-Fock calculations. Within LDA we find a homogeneous metallic and ferromagnetic ground state, but when including the Coulomb interaction more explicitly within the Hartree-Fock approximation, we find an insulating state of lower energy with both spin and orbital order. We also interpret our results in terms of a simple model.
The effects of a spin-orbit interaction on transition-metal ions of (4d)^3- and (5d)^3 -based oxides in which three electrons occupy t_{2g} orbitals are studied. The amplitude of the magnetic moment of d electrons on the 5d and 4d orbitals is estimated by numerical diagonalization. It is found that the magnetic moment is reduced by the spin-orbit interaction. It is suggested that (4d)^3- and (5d)^3 -based oxides are located in the middle of the L-S and J-J coupling schemes.
We show that spin-orbit coupling (SOC) plays Janus-faced roles on the orbitally-selective Mott transitions in a three-orbital Hubbard model with crystal field splitting at a specific filling of $2/3$, which is a minimal Hamiltonian for ruthenates. While the SOC favors metallic state due to enhancement of orbital hybridization at smaller on-site Coulomb repulsions, it stabilizes the Mott insulating state ascribed to lifting of orbital degeneracies and enhancement of band polarizations at larger electronic interaction. Moreover, an orbitally-selective non-Fermi liquid (OSnFL), where breakdown an…
Soft x-ray resonant scattering at the Ni L2,3 edges is used to test models of magnetic and orbital-ordering below the metal-insulator transition in NdNiO3. The large branching ratio of the L3 to L2 intensities of the (1/2,0,1/2) reflection and the observed azimuthal angle and polarization dependence originates from a non collinear magnetic structure. The absence of an orbital signal and the non collinear magnetic structure show that the nickelates are materials for which orbital ordering is absent at the metal-insulator transition.
Competition of crystal field splitting and Hund's rule coupling in magnetic metal-insulator transitions of half-filled two-orbital Hubbard model is investigated by multi-orbital slave-boson mean field theory. We show that with the increase of Coulomb correlation, the system firstly transits from a paramagnetic (PM) metal to a {\it Néel} antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mott insulator, or a nonmagnetic orbital insulator, depending on the competition of crystal field splitting and the Hund's rule coupling. The different AFM Mott insulator, PM metal and orbital insulating phase are none, partially and ful…
We analyze the role of local geometry in the spin and orbital interaction in transition metal compounds with orbital degeneracy. We stress that the tendency observed for the most studied case (transition metals in O$_6$ octahedra with one common oxygen -- common corner of neighboring octahedra and with $\sim 180^{\circ}$ metal--oxygen--metal bonds), that ferro-orbital ordering renders antiferro-spin coupling, and, {\it vice versa}, antiferro-orbitals give ferro-spin ordering, is not valid in general case, in particular for octahedra with common edge and with $\sim 90^{\circ}$ M--O--M bonds. Sp…
We propose a spin valve device based on the interplay of a modulated spin-orbit interaction and a uniform external magnetic field acting on a quantum wire. Half-metal phases, where electrons with only a selected spin polarization exhibit ballistic conductance, can be tuned by varying the magnetic field. These half-metal phases are proven to be robust against electron-electron repulsive interactions. Our results arise from a combination of explicit band diagonalization, bosonization techniques and extensive DMRG computations.
We present the influence of spin correlation on the metal-insulator transitions (MIT) in two-orbital Hubbard models by the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson approach. In the asymmetric half-filling situation, the two orbits simultaneously transit from conducting to insulating states with the increase of Coulomb correlation, accompanied by a paramagnetic (PM)-antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition. The orbital selective Mott transition found in the PM condition is completely suppressed over a wide correlation range, though it may exist in the systems away from half-filling. In the insulating state, t…
Recent investigations suggest that both spin-orbit coupling and electron correlation play very crucial roles in the $5d$ transition metal oxides. By using the generalized Gutzwiller variational method and dynamical mean-field theory with the hybridization expansion continuous time quantum Monte Carlo as impurity solver, the three-band Hubbard model with full Hund's rule coupling and spin-orbit interaction terms, which contains the essential physics of partially filled $t_{2g}$ sub-shell of $5d$ materials, is studied systematically. The calculated phase diagram of this model exhibits three dist…
We exploit topological semi-metallic phases resulting from the Kondo screening in Anderson lattice models. It is shown that by including spin-orbit interactions both in the bulk electrons and in the hybridization between the conduction electrons and electrons in $f$ orbit, all types of topological semi-metallic phases can be realized in Anderson lattice models. Specifically, upon either time-reversal symmetry broken or inversion symmetry broken, we find that either Weyl semi-metallic phase, Dirac semi-metallic phase or nodal-ring semi-metallic phases always emerge between insulating phases and…
We investigate the effects of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a three-orbital impurity model with Kanamori interaction using the numerical renormalization group method. We focus on the impurity occupancy $N_d=2$ relevant to the dynamical mean-field theory studies of Hund's metals. Depending on the strength of SOC $λ$ we identify three regimes: usual Hund's impurity for $|λ|<λ_c$, van-Vleck non-magnetic impurity for $λ> λ_c$, and a $J=2$ impurity for $λ< -λ_c$. They all correspond to a Fermi liquid but with very different quasiparticle phase shifts and different physical properties. The crosso…
Due to the separation between the spin and the orbital screening scales, the normal state of Hund's metals at ambient temperature can be loosely characterized as a partially coherent state with fluctuating spins and quenched orbital moments. With the aim to characterize this situation more precisely, we investigate the Kondo-Kanamori impurity model that describes the low-energy local physics of three-orbital Hund's metals occupied by two or four electrons. Within this model one can diminish the mixed spin-orbital terms and thereby enhance the separation between the two screening scales, allowi…
By combining 5d transition-metal oxides showing pronounced spin-orbit interactions and oxide-based heterostructures, we propose rutile-based IrO2/TiO2 superlattices as promising candidates for unconventional electronic properties. By means of density-functional-theory simulations complemented with Hubbard-like corrections, we focus on the evolution of the electronic structure as a function of the IrO2 layer thickness and predict the heterostructures to exhibit a thickness-controlled metal-to-insulator transition, crucially related to the connectivity among IrO6 octahedra. The subtle interplay …
We investigate the magnetic instabilities of the two-dimensional model of interacting e_g electrons for hole doping away from two electrons per site in the mean-field approximation. In particular, we address the occurrence of orbitally polarized states due to the inequivalent orbitals, and their interplay with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin order. The role played by the Hund's exchange coupling J_H and by the crystal field orbital splitting E_z in stabilizing one of the competing phases is discussed in detail.
It has recently been proposed that Na4Ir3O8 is a weak Mott insulator at ambient pressure, supporting a three-dimensional spin liquid phase with a spinon Fermi surface. This proposal is consistent with recent experimental findings that the material becomes a metal upon increasing pressure or doping. In this work, we investigate the effect of the spin-orbit coupling arising from 5d Ir moments both in the metallic and spin liquid phases of Na4Ir3O8. The effective Hubbard model in terms of pseudospin j=1/2 Ir states is derived and its consequences to both metallic and spin liquid phases are studie…
We construct a generalized multiplicative renormalization group transformation to study the low energy dynamics of a heavy particle tunneling among $M$ different positions and interacting with $N_f$ independent conduction electron channels. Using a $1/N_f$-expansion we show that this M-level scales towards a fixed point equivalent to the $N_f$ channel $SU(M) \times SU(N_f)$ Coqblin-Schrieffer model. Solving numerically the scaling equations we find that a realistic M-level system scales close to this fixed point (FP) and its Kondo temperature is in the experimentally observable range $1-10 K$.
Spin correlations in metallic and insulating phases of $V_2O_3$ and its derivatives are investigated using magnetic neutron scattering. Metallic samples have incommensurate spin correlations varying little with hole doping. Paramagnetic insulating samples have spin correlations only among near neighbors. The transition from either of these phases into the low temperature insulating antiferromagnetic phase is accompanied by an abrupt change of dynamic magnetic short range order. Our results support the idea that the transition into the antiferromagnetic insulator is also an orbital ordering tra…
We study the finite-temperature properties of the half-filled two-band Hubbard model in the presence of Hund's rule coupling and orbital anisotropy. We use the mean-field treatment of the $Z_2$ slave-spin theory with a finite-temperature extension of the zero-temperature gauge variable previously developed by Hassan and de' Medici http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.81.035106}{Phys. Rev. B {\bf 81}, 035106 (2010)}]. We consider the instability of the Fermi liquid phases and how it is enhanced by the Hund's rule. We identify paramagnetic solutions that have zero quasi-particle weight with bad me…
We report results of the study of the recently discovered magnetic resonance in the orbitally ordered phase of CeB6 (the orbital ordering resonance) in a wide frequency range 44-360 GHz. It is found that the g-factor for this resonance increases with frequency from g(44 GHz)~1.55 to g(>250 GHz)~1.7. In addition to the orbital ordering resonance for the frequencies exceeding 200 GHz a new magnetic resonance with the g-factor 1.2-1.3 is detected.
It is shown that the spin-orbit coupling due to structure inversion asymmetry leads to a characteristic anisotropy in the magnetoconductance of two-dimensional metals. Relevance for recent experiments is discussed.
We consider a strongly spin-orbit-coupled metal, one of whose Fermi surfaces is close to a Lifshitz (topological) transition. Via a renormalization group analysis of the square-lattice Hubbard model with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling, we show that such a metal is generically unstable to the formation of mixed-parity superconductivity with a helical triplet component.
We investigate the frustrated magnetic interactions in cubic transition metal oxides with orbital degeneracy. The $e_g$ orbitals order easier and their ordering explains the $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase in KCuF$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$. In $t_{2g}$ systems the magnetic order changes at a transition from an orbital liquid to orbital ordered states. The fluctuations of $t_{2g}$ orbitals play a prominent role in LaVO$_3$ and YVO$_3$, where they compete with the Jahn-Teller effect and trigger the C-type antiferromagnetic order.
In transition metals and their compounds, the orbital degrees of freedom gives rise to an orbital current, in addition to the ordinary spin and charge currents. We reveal that considerably large spin and anomalous Hall effects (SHE and AHE) observed in transition metals originate from an orbital Hall effect (OHE). To elucidate the origin of these novel Hall effects, a simple periodic s-d hybridization model is proposed as a generic model. The giant positive OHE originates from the orbital Aharonov-Bohm phase factor, and induces spin Hall conductivity that is proportional to the spin-orbit pola…
Ordered phases such as charge- and spin-density wave state accompany either full or partial gapping of Fermi surface (FS) leading a metal-insulator or metal-metal transition (MMT). However, there are examples of MMT without any signatures of symmetry breaking. One example is Na$_2$Ti$_2$Sb$_2$O, where a partial gapping of FS is observed but a density wave ordering has not been found. Here we propose a microscopic mechanism of such a MMT which occurs due to a momentum dependent spin-orbit coupled molecular orbital polarization. Since a molecular $d$ orbital polarization is present due to a smal…
The metal-insulator and spin state transitions of CoO under high pressure are studied by using density functional theory combined with dynamical mean-field theory. Our calculations predict that the metal-insulator transition in CoO is a typical orbital selective Mott transition, where the $t_{2g}$ orbitals of Co 3d shell become metallic firstly around 60 GPa while the $e_g$ orbitals still remain insulating until 170 GPa. Further studies of the spin states of Co 3d shell reveal that the orbital selective Mott phase in the intermediate pressure regime is mainly stabilized by the high-spin state …
Interaction-driven metal-insulator transitions or Mott transitions are widely observed in condensed-matter systems. In multi-orbital systems, many-body physics is richer in which an orbital-selective metal-insulator transition is an intriguing and unique phenomenon. Here we use first-principles calculations to show that a magnetic transition (from paramagnetic to long-range magnetically ordered) can simultaneously induce an orbital-selective insulator-metal transition in rock-salt ordered double perovskite oxides $A_2BB'$O$_6$ where $B$ is a non-magnetic ion (Y$^{3+}$ and Sc$^{3+}$) and $B'$ a…
I give a brief overview of a polaron formation in three distinct transition metal oxides: (i) spin polaron when a hole is added to the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordered plane in La$_2$CuO$_4$, (ii) orbital polaron when a hole is added to the alternating orbital (AO) ordered plane in LaMnO$_3$, and (iii) spin-orbital polaron when a hole is added to the AF and AO ordered plane in LaVO$_3$. Comparison of the distinct features of the above polarons can shed some light on the basic differences between the experimental phase diagrams of the lightly doped transition metal oxides La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$,…
We show that YCr6Ge6, comprising a kagome lattice made up of Cr atoms, is a plausible candidate compound for a kagome metal that is expected to exhibit anomalous phenomena such as flat-band ferromagnetism. Resistivity, magnetization, and heat capacity are measured on single crystals of YCr6Ge6, and band structure calculations are performed to investigate the electronic structure. Curie-Weiss-like behavior in magnetic susceptibility, T2 dependence in resistivity, and a Sommerfeld coefficient doubly enhanced from a calculated value indicate a moderately strong electron correlation. Interestingly…
The quantum spin liquid candidate NaYbSe$_2$ was recently reported to exhibit a Mott transition under pressure. Superconductivity was observed in the high-pressure metallic phase, raising the question concerning its relation with the low-pressure quantum spin liquid ground state. Here we combine the density functional theory and the dynamical mean-field theory to explore the underlying mechanism of the insulator-to-metal transition and superconductivity and establish an overall picture of its electronic phases under pressure. Our results suggest that NaYbSe$_2$ is a charge-transfer insulator a…
In a magnetic multilayer, the spin transfer between localized magnetization dynamics and itinerant conduction spin arises from the interaction between a normal metal and an adjacent ferromagnetic layer. The spin-mixing conductance then governs the spin-transfer torques and spin pumping at the magnetic interface. Theoretical description of spin-mixing conductance at the magnetic interface often employs a single conduction-band model. However, there is orbital hybridization between conduction $s$ electron and localized $d$ electron of the heavy transition metal, in which the single conduction-ba…
A novel metallic and magnetic transition metal oxide Ag2NiO2 is studied by means of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure is characterized by alternating stacking of a Ni3+O2 layer and a (Ag2)+ layer, the former realizing a spin-1/2 triangular lattice with eg orbital degeneracy and the latter providing itinerant electrons. It is found that the NiO2 layer exhibits orbital ordering at Ts = 260 K and antiferromagnetic spin ordering at TN = 56 K. Moreover, a moderately large mass enhancement is found for the itinerant electrons, suggesting…
We present a powder inelastic neutron scattering study of magnetic excitations in Ba$_2$FeReO$_6$, a member of the double perovskite family of materials which exhibit half-metallic behavior and high Curie temperatures. We find clear evidence of two well-defined dispersing magnetic modes in its low temperature ferrimagnetic state. We develop a local moment model, which incorporates the interaction of Fe spins with spin-orbit locked magnetic moments on Re, and show that this captures our experimental observations. Our study further opens up double perovskites as model systems to explore the inte…
In the present review different effects related to the orbital degrees of freedom are discussed. Leaving aside such aspects as the superexchange mechanism of the cooperative Jahn-Teller distortions and different properties of "Kugel-Khomskii"-like models, we mostly concentrate on other phenomena, which are in the focus of the modern condensed matter physics. After a general introduction we start with the discussion of the concept of effective reduction of dimensionality due to orbital degrees of freedom and consider such phenomena as the orbitally-driven Peierls effect and the formation of sma…
The valence flat bands in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterobilayers are shown to exhibit strong intralayer spin-orbit coupling. This is reflected in a simple tight-binding model with spin-dependent complex hoppings based on the continuum model. A perpendicular electric field causes interlayer hybridization, such that the effective model is equivalent to the Kane-Mele model of topological insulators. The proposed model can be used as a starting point to understand interactions and the experimentally observed topological phases.
We study spin-orbit coupling in metallic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) within the many-body Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) framework. For a well defined sub-class of metallic CNTs, that contains both achiral zig-zag as well as a sub-set of chiral tubes, an effective low energy field theory description is derived. We aim to describe system at finite dopings, but close to the charge neutrality point (commensurability). A new regime is identified where spin-orbit coupling leads to an inverted hierarchy of mini-gaps of bosonic modes. We then add a proximity coupling to a superconducting (SC) substrate …
The electronic phase diagram of the weak spin-orbit Mott insulator (Sr(1-x)Lax)3Ir2O7 is determined via an exhaustive experimental study. Upon doping electrons via La substitution, an immediate collapse in resistivity occurs along with a narrow regime of nanoscale phase separation comprised of antiferromagnetic, insulating regions and paramagnetic, metallic puddles persisting until x~0.04. Continued electron doping results in an abrupt, first-order phase boundary where the Neel state is suppressed and a homogenous, correlated, metallic state appears with an enhanced spin susceptibility and loc…
