The hypothesis of the decay of neutrino mass eigenstates leads to a substantial modification of the appearance and disappearance probabilities of flavor eigenstates. We investigate the impact on the standard oscillation scenario caused by the decay of the heaviest mass eigenstate $ν_3$ (with a mass $m_3$ and a mean life $τ_3$) to a sterile state in DUNE. We find that the lower bound of $5.1 \times 10^{-11}~s/eV$ at 90\% CL on the decay parameter $τ_3/m_3$ can be set if the Neutral Current data are included in the analysis, thus providing the best long-baseline expected limit so far. We also show that the $ν_τ$ appearance channel would give only a negligible contribution to the decay parameter constraints. Our numerical results are corroborated by analytical formulae for the appearance and disappearance probabilities in vacuum (which is a useful approximation for the study of the invisible decay model) that we have developed up to the second order in the solar mass splitting and to all orders in the decay factor $t/τ_3$.
We study the consequences of invisible decay of neutrinos in the context of the DUNE experiment. We assume that the third mass eigenstate is unstable and decays to a light sterile neutrino and a scalar or a pseudo-scalar. We consider DUNE running in 5 years neutrino and 5 years antineutrino mode and a detector volume of 40 kt. We obtain the bounds on the rest frame life time $τ_3$ normalized to the mass $m_3$ as $τ_3/m_3 > 4.50\times 10^{-11}$ s/eV at 90\% C.L. for a normal hierarchical mass spectrum. We also find that DUNE can discover neutrino decay for $τ_3/m_3 > 4.27\times 10^{-11}$ s/eV a…
We analyse the sensitivity of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) to a sterile neutrino, combining information from both the Near Detector (ND) and the Far Detector (FD). DUNE's sterile exclusion reach is affected by taking into account the information on the neutrino production point, in contrast to assuming a point-like neutrino source. Visible differences remain after taking into account energy bin-to-bin uncorrelated systematics.
We study future DUNE sensitivity to various electromagnetic couplings of neutrinos, including magnetic moments, milli-charges, and charge radii. The DUNE PRISM capabilities play a crucial role in constraining the electron flavored couplings. We find that DUNE will be able to place the strongest terrestrial constraint on the muon-neutrino magnetic moment by improving on LSND's bounds by roughly a factor of two, although Borexino's solar constraint will still be stronger. For the muon neutrino milli-charge DUNE can place the leading experimental bound, with two orders of magnitude improvement co…
One of the primary objectives of Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is to discover the leptonic CP violation and to identify it's source. In this context, we study the impact of non-standard neutrino interactions (NSIs) on observing the CP violation signal at DUNE. We explore the impact of various parameter degeneracies introduced by non-zero NSI and identify which of these can influence the CP violation sensitivity and CP precision of DUNE, by considering NSI both in data and in theory. In particular, we study how the CP sensitivity of DUNE is affected because of the intrinsic hierar…
We consider the sensitivity of the DUNE experiment to a heavy neutral lepton, HNL (also known as sterile neutrino) in the mass range from a few MeV to a few GeV, interacting with the Standard Model via a transition magnetic moment to the active neutrinos, the so-called dipole portal. The HNL is produced via the upscattering of active neutrinos, and the subsequent decay inside the detector provides a single-photon signal. We show that the tau-neutrino dipole portal can be efficiently probed at the DUNE far detector, using the tau-neutrino flux generated by neutrino oscillations, while the near …
Novel leptophilic neutral currents can be tested at upcoming neutrino oscillation experiments using two complementary processes, neutrino trident production and neutrino-electron ($ν-e$) elastic scattering. Considering generic anomaly-free $U(1)$ extensions of the Standard Model, we discuss the characteristics of $ν-e$ scattering as well as $e^+e^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$ trident production at the DUNE near detector in the presence of such BSM scenarios. We then determine the sensitivity of DUNE in constraining the well-known $L_e - L_μ$ and $L_μ- L_τ$ models. We conclude that DUNE will be able to probe…
We study the possibility of probing different texture zero neutrino mass matrices at long baseline neutrino experiment DUNE. Assuming a diagonal charged lepton basis and Majorana nature of light neutrinos, we first classify the possible light neutrino mass matrices with one and two texture zeros and then numerically evaluate the parameter space in terms of atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$ and Dirac CP phase $δ_{\text{CP}}$ which satisfies the texture zero conditions. We then feed these parameter values into the numerical analysis in order to study the sensitivity of DUNE experiment to them. W…
We check the capability of the DUNE neutrino experiment to detect new sources of leptonic CP violation beside the single phase expected in the Standard Model. We illustrate our strategy based on the measurement of CP asymmetries in the case New Physics will show up as Non-Standard neutrino Interactions and sterile neutrino states and show that the most promising one, once the experimental errors are taken into account in both scenarios, is the one related to the $ν_μ\to ν_e$ transition.
Experiments measuring the parameters of active neutrino oscillations can also search for the sterile neutrinos in a part of sterile neutrino parameter space. In this paper, we analyze the prospects for the sterile neutrino search in the upcoming experiment DUNE for the sterile neutrinos with masses at GeV scale. As it relies on the still-undecided design of the Near Detector, we provide the expected number of the sterile neutrino decays in the Near Detector volume. Our most optimistic predictions show that the corresponding limit on mixing can be approximately of the same order as the previous…
The neutrino mass ordering is one of the principal unknowns in the neutrino sector. Long baseline neutrino experiments have the potential of resolving this issue as they are sensitive to large matter effects. The superbeam experiment DUNE is one of the most promising candidates to study the neutrino mass hierarchy, along with NO$ν$A and T2K. But in the presence of non unitarity of the leptonic mixing matrix, the capability of such experiments to discriminate between the two hierarchies gets suppressed. The mass hierarchy sensitivity of DUNE decreases in the presence of new physics. In this pap…
The CP phases associated with the sterile neutrino cannot be measured in the dedicated short-baseline experiments being built to test the sterile neutrino hypothesis. On the other hand, these phases can be measured in long-baseline experiments, even though the main goal of these experiments is not to test or measure sterile neutrino parameters. In particular, the sterile neutrino phase $δ_{24}$ affects the charged-current electron appearance data in long-baseline experiment. In this paper we show for the first time how well the sterile neutrino phase $δ_{24}$ can be measured by the next-genera…
We discuss the impact of non-standard neutrino matter interactions (NSI) in propagation on the determination of CP phase in the context of the long baseline accelerator experiments such as Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). DUNE will mainly address the issue of CP violation in the leptonic sector. Here we study the role of NSI and its impact on the question of observing the CP violation signal at DUNE. We consider two scenarios of oscillation with three active neutrinos in absence and presence of NSI. We elucidate the importance of ruling out subdominant new physics effects introduce…
We quantitatively study the percentage of fake events present in CCQE and CCRes interactions and the impact of final state interactions on the neutrino oscillation parameters at Dune. Resonance interaction will be the most dominant interaction in the oscillation sensitive region of DUNE. The effect of final-state interactions for DUNE oscillation physics is analysed in an ideal and realistic detector scenario. The $ν_μ$-disappearance Oscillation channel is studied using LAr detector. We find that nuclear effects and detector thresholds plays an significant role in CCQE and CCRes interactions a…
Neutrino masses are one of the most promising open windows to physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). Several extensions of the SM which accommodate neutrino masses require the addition of right-handed neutrinos to its particle content. These extra fermions will either be kinematically accessible (sterile neutrinos) or not (deviations from Unitarity of the PMNS matrix) but at some point they will impact neutrino oscillation searches. We explore the differences and similitudes between the two cases and compare their present bounds with the expected sensitivities of DUNE. We conclude that Non-Un…
The ultimate objectives of ongoing and upcoming neutrino experiments are the precise measurement of neutrino mixing parameters and the confirmation of mass hierarchy. The systematic inaccuracy in the cross-section models introduces inaccuracy in the neutrino mixing parameters estimation. It is important to secure a large decrease of uncertainties, particularly those relating to cross-section, neutrino-nucleus interactions, and neutrino-energy reconstruction, in order to achieve these ambitious goals. In this research article, we use three alternative neutrino event generators, GENIE, NuWro, an…
We study the impact of the dynamical Lorentz symmetry breaking induced by the auxiliary gauge fields of neutrino on the oscillations probability at DUNE. The DLSB introduces an alternative energy-momentum relation of the neutrinos and thus results in a new oscillation probability. We extend the previously proposed four-Majorana fermion model that gives rise to DLSB after the type II seesaw mechanism by considering the electron neutrino forward scattering when passing through a medium. Moreover, we incorporate the three-flavor neutrino states, which introduce the CP-violation term inside the os…
The precise measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters is one of the highest priorities in neutrino oscillation physics. To achieve the desired precision, it is necessary to reduce the systematic uncertainties related to neutrino energy reconstruction. An error in energy reconstruction is propagated to all the oscillation parameters, hence a careful estimation of neutrino energy is required. To increase the statistics, neutrino oscillation experiments use heavy nuclear targets like Argon(Z=18). The use of these nuclear targets introduces nuclear effects that severely impact the neutrino en…
In neutrino oscillation experiments precise measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters is of prime importance as well as a challenge. To improve the statistics, presently running and proposed experiments are using heavy nuclear targets. These targets introduce nuclear effects and the quantification of these effects on neutrino oscillation parameters will be decisive in the prediction of neutrino oscillation physics. Limited understanding of neutrino nucleus interactions and inaccurate reconstruction of neutrino energy causes uncertainty in the cross section. The error in the determination …
The neutrino-electron scattering process is a powerful tool to explore new physics beyond the standard model. Recently the possibility of DUNE Near Detector (ND) to constrain various new physics scenarios using this process have been highlighted in the literature. In this work, we consider the most general U(1) model and probe the constraints on the mass and coupling strength of the additional $Z'$ from $ν-e$ scattering at DUNE ND. The presence of the $Z^\prime$ gives rise to extra interference effects. In the context of the general U(1) model, the destructive interference can occur in either …
Next generation neutrino oscillation experiments are expected to measure the remaining oscillation parameters with very good precision. They will have unprecedented capabilities to search for new physics that modify oscillations. DUNE, with its broad band beam, good particle identification, and relatively high energies will provide an excellent environment to search for new physics. If deviations from the standard three-flavor oscillation picture are seen however, it is crucial to know which new physics scenario is found so that it can be verified elsewhere and theoretically understood. We inv…
DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) is a proposed long-baseline neutrino experiment in the US with a baseline of 1300 km from Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) to Sanford Underground Research Facility, which will house a 40 kt Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) as the far detector. The experiment will also have a fine grained near detector for accurately measuring the initial fluxes. We show that the energy range of the fluxes and baseline of the DUNE near detector is conducive for observing $ν_μ\to ν_e$ oscillations of $Δm^2 \sim$ eV$^2$ scale sterile neutrin…
We simultaneously investigate source, detector and matter non-standard neutrino interactions at the proposed DUNE experiment. Our analysis is performed using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo exploring the full parameter space. We find that the sensitivity of DUNE to the standard oscillation parameters is worsened due to the presence of non-standard neutrino interactions. In particular, there are degenerate solutions in the leptonic mixing angle $θ_{23}$ and the Dirac CP-violating phase $δ$. We also compute the expected sensitivities at DUNE to the non-standard interaction parameters. We find that th…
The simplest extension of the SM to account for the observed neutrino masses and mixings is the addition of at least two singlet fermions (or right-handed neutrinos). If their masses lie at or below the GeV scale, such new fermions would be produced in meson decays. Similarly, provided they are sufficiently heavy, their decay channels may involve mesons in the final state. In this work, we provide consistent expressions for the relevant effective operators involving neutrinos and mesons with masses up to 2 GeV. The associated effective Lagrangian has been implemented in FeynRules, allowing for…
Here we study the pattern of neutrino oscillations emerging from a previously proposed warped model construction incorporating $Δ(27)$ flavor symmetry. In addition to a complete description of fermion masses, the model predicts the lepton mixing matrix in terms of two parameters. The good measurement of $θ_{13}$ makes these two parameters nearly proportional, leading to an approximate one-parameter description of neutrino oscillations. There is a sharp fourfold degenerate correlation between $δ_{CP}$ and the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$, so that maximal $θ_{23}$ also implies maximal lepto…
We consider the use of directionality in the search for monoenergetic sub-GeV neutrinos arising from the decay of stopped kaons, which can be produced by dark matter annihilation in the core of the Sun. When these neutrinos undergo charged-current interactions with a nucleus at a neutrino detector, they often eject a proton which is highly peaked in the forward direction. The direction of this track can be measured at DUNE, allowing one to distinguish signal from background by comparing on-source and off-source event rates. We find that directional information can enhance the signal to backgro…
It was shown that the tension between the mass-squared differences obtained from solar neutrinos and those acquired through KamLAND experiments may be solved by the introduction of a non-standard flavor-dependent interaction (NSI) in neutrino propagation. In this study, we discuss the possibility of testing such a hypothesis using the future long-baseline neutrino experiments T2HKK and DUNE. Assuming that the NSI does not exist, we provide the excluded region within the ($ε_D$, $ε_N$) plane, where $ε_D$ and $ε_N$ are the parameters appearing in the solar neutrino analysis conducted with the NS…
We investigate the implications of a sterile neutrino on the physics potential of the proposed experiment DUNE and future runs of NO$ν$A using latest NO$ν$A results. Using combined analysis of the disappearance and appearance data, NO$ν$A reported preferred solutions at normal hierarchy (NH) with two degenerate best-fit points one in the lower octant (LO) and $δ_{13}$ = 1.48$π$ and other in higher octant (HO) and $δ_{13}$ = 0.74$π$. Another solution of inverted hierarchy (IH) which is 0.46$σ$ away from best fit was also reported. We discuss chances of resolving these degeneracies in the presen…
A number of different effects of the violation of the Equivalence Principle (VEP), taken as sub-leading mechanism of neutrino flavor oscillation, are examined within the framework of the DUNE experiment. We study the possibility of obtaining a misleading neutrino oscillation parameter region caused by our unawareness of VEP. Additionally, we evaluate the impact on the measurement of CP violation and the distinction of neutrino mass hierarchy at DUNE. Besides, limits on VEP for a wide variety of textures of the matrix that connects neutrino gravity eigenstates to flavor eigenstates are imposed.…
In this talk we present our results on the sensitivity to the neutrino mass hierarchy, the octant of the mixing angle and the CP phase in the future long baseline experiments T2HK and DUNE as well as in the atmospheric neutrino observation at Hyperkamiokande (HK).
Neutral current (NC) measurements play an important role in exploring new physics scenarios at long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We find that combining NC measurements of the proposed Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) with its charged current (CC) measurements enhances the bounds on some of the Non-Unitarity (NU) parameters. Combining DUNE with the T2HK experiment improves the bounds further. We show that even in the averaged out regime of light sterile neutrinos, the NC events are different from the heavy sterile case in the leading order. It is observed that NC measur…
We study the capabilities of the DUNE near detector to probe the 3+1 sterile formalism and the non-unitarity of the leptonic sector. We add to the current analyses in the literature, the use of the charged current events for the $ν_τ$ appearance channel and the consideration of the energy spectral uncertainty (shape uncertainty) for the different channels which plays an important role, especially at the near detector, and has been usually overlooked in the literature. We find that even with this more conservative and realistic approach, we still obtain an improvement in the sensitivity with re…
We consider the $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ appearance channel in the future Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) which offers a good statistics of the $ν_τ$ sample. In order to measure its impact on constraining the oscillation parameters, we consider several assumptions on the efficiency for $ν_τ$ charged-current signal events (with subsequent $τ\to e$ decay) and the related backgrounds and study the effects of various systematic uncertainties. Two different neutrino fluxes have been considered, namely a CP-violation optimized flux and a $ν_τ$ optimized flux. Our results show that the addition of th…
Adding right-handed neutrinos to the Standard Model is a natural and simple extension and is well motivated on both the theoretical and the experimental side. We extend the Standard Model by adding only one right-handed Majorana neutrino and study the sensitivity of the Near Detector of the DUNE experiment to the new physics parameters, namely the mixing parameters $|U_{e 4}|^2$ and $|U_{μ4}|^2$ and the mass $m_N$. The study relies on searches of the products of right-handed neutrino decays, which is possible thanks to an extremely intense beam and a state-of-the-art detection technology. This…
We explore the effects of non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) and how they modify neutrino propagation in the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). We find that NSI can significantly modify the data to be collected by the DUNE experiment as long as the new physics parameters are large enough. For example, If the DUNE data are consistent with the standard three-massive-neutrinos paradigm, order 0.1 (in units of the Fermi constant) NSI effects will be ruled out. On the other hand, if large NSI effects are present, DUNE will be able to not only rule out the standard paradigm but also …
In the recent years experiments have established the existence of neutrino oscillations and most of the oscillation parameters have been measured with a good accuracy. The search for New Physics in neutrino oscillation will be an experimental concrete possibility in the next future. In this paper we investigate the ability of the DUNE facility to search for Non Standard Interaction (NSI) in neutrino propagation in matter, emphasizing the role of different assumptions on the shape and absolute normalization errors of both $ν_e$ and $ν_μ$ signals. We also study in detail the effects of NSI and s…
We investigate the potential of the long-baseline Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) to study large-extra-dimension (LED) models originally proposed to explain the smallness of neutrino masses by postulating that right-handed neutrinos, unlike all standard model fermion fields, can propagate in the bulk. The massive Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of the right-handed neutrino fields modify the neutrino oscillation probabilities and can hence affect their propagation. We show that, as far as DUNE is concerned, the LED model is indistinguishable from a $(3 + 3N)$-neutrino framework for modest v…
We address some theoretical issues of the quantum decoherence phenomenon within the neutrino oscillation framework and carry out various tests under DUNE simulated experimental environment. On the theoretical side, we provide a general expression for an invariant decoherence matrix under a quantum basis rotation. On the simulated experimental side, considering a rotation invariant and a non-invariant decoherence matrix, we study the impact on the fitting of the standard oscillation parameters, the sensitivity in the mass hierarchy and CP violation, combining the neutrino and antineutrino mode …
In the near future, fundamental interactions at high-energy scales may be most efficiently studied via precision measurements at low energies. A universal language to assemble and interpret precision measurements is the so-called SMEFT, which is an effective field theory (EFT) where the Standard Model (SM) Lagrangian is extended by higher-dimensional operators. In this paper we investigate the possible impact of the DUNE neutrino experiment on constraining the SMEFT. The unprecedented neutrino flux offers an opportunity to greatly improve the current limits via precision measurements of the tr…
We evaluate the impact of sterile neutrino oscillations in the so-called 3+1 scenario on the proposed long baseline experiment in USA and Japan. There are two proposals for the Japan experiment which are called T2HK and T2HKK. We show the impact of sterile neutrino oscillation parameters on the expected sensitivity of T2HK and T2HKK to mass hierarchy, CP violation and octant of $θ_{23}$ and compare it against that expected in the case of standard oscillations. We add the expected ten years data from DUNE and present the combined expected sensitivity of T2HKK+DUNE to the oscillation parameters.…
We discuss the impact of matter density profile shape on the determination of nonstandard neutrino matter interactions (NSI) in the context of the long baseline accelerator experiments such as Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The primary scientific goals of DUNE are to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy, the leptonic CP violation phase, and the existence of new physics beyond the standard model of particles. Here we study the role of different earth matter density profiles on the question of observing standard oscillation as wells as NSI at DUNE. We consider two different earth …
The future long baseline experiments such as DUNE and T2HKK have promising prospects to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and measuring standard $CP$ phase $δ$. However, presence of possible non-standard interactions of neutrinos with matter may intricate this picture and is the subject matter of the present work. We have studied the standard parameter degeneracies in presence of non-standard interactions(NSI) with DUNE and T2HKK experiments. We examine the mass hierarchy degeneracy assuming (i) all NSI parameters to be non-zero and (ii) one NSI parameter($ε_{eμ}$) and its corresponding $C…
In this work we investigate the sensitivity to the neutrino mass hierarchy, the octant of the mixing angle $θ_{23}$ and the CP phase $δ_{CP}$ in the future long-baseline experiments T2HK and DUNE as well as in the atmospheric neutrino observation at Hyperkamiokande (HK). We show for the first time that the sensitivity is enhanced greatly if we combine these three experiments. Our results show that the hierarchy sensitivity of both T2HK and HK are limited due to the presence of parameter degeneracy. But this degeneracy is removed when T2HK and HK are added together. With T2HK+HK (DUNE), the neu…
Quantum mechanical interactions between neutrinos and matter along the path of propagation, the Wolfenstein matter effect, are of particular importance for the upcoming long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, specifically the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). Here, we explore specifically what about the matter density profile can be measured by DUNE, considering both the shape and normalization of the profile between the neutrinos' origin and detection. Additionally, we explore the capability of a perturbative method for calculating neutrino oscillation probabilities and whe…
