A sample of 22 spiral galaxies compiled from published data is studied. The galaxy rotation curves pass through a maximum distance of more than $\sim 1$ kpc from the center with a subsequent decrease in the rotation velocity. The galaxy position in the Tully-Fisher (TF) and baryonic Tully-Fisher (BTF) diagrams show that the values of maximum rotation velocities are located on the same sequence with other galaxies, while the velocities at the disk periphery for some galaxies are significantly lower than the expected values for a given mass or luminosity. Thus, the decrease in the rotation curve can be associated with a reduced contribution of the dark halo to the rotation velocity. For seven galaxies with the longest rotation curves, the disk mass was estimated to be with the dark halo (Newtonian model) and without the halo (modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) model). In four of the galaxies, the MOND model encounters difficulties in interpreting the rotation curve: in order to be consistent with the observations, the MOND parameter $a_0$ should differ significantly from the expected value $a_0 \sim 10^{-8}$ cm/s$^2$, while the disk mass exceeds the value based on IR photometry and maximum disk model. The conflict with MOND is the most significant for NGC 157.
We construct average spectra of host galaxies of slower, faster, bluer, and redder Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) from the SDSS-II supernova survey. The average spectrum of slower declining (broader light-curve width or higher stretch) SN Ia hosts shows stronger emission lines compared to the average spectrum of faster declining (narrower light-curve width or lower stretch) SN Ia hosts. Using pPXF, we find that hosts of slower declining SNe Ia have metallicities that are, on average, 0.24 dex lower than average metallicities of faster declining SN Ia hosts. Similarly, redder SN Ia hosts have slig…
Selecting disk galaxies from the cosmological, hydrodynamical simulation Magneticum Pathfinder we show that almost half of our poster child disk galaxies at $z=2$ show significantly declining rotation curves and low dark matter fractions, very similar to recently reported observations. These galaxies do not show any anomalous behavior, reside in standard dark matter halos and typically grow significantly in mass until $z = 0$, where they span all morphological classes, including disk galaxies matching present day rotation curves and observed dark matter fractions. Our findings demonstrate that…
Unlike Newtonian dynamics which is linear and obeys the strong equivalence principle, in any nonlinear gravitation such as Milgromian dynamics (MOND), the strong version of the equivalence principle is violated and the gravitational dynamics of a system is influenced by the external gravitational field in which it is embedded. This so called External Field Effect (EFE) is one of the important implications of MOND and provides a special context to test Milgromian dynamics. Here, we study the rotation curves (RCs) of 18 spiral galaxies and find that their shapes constrain the EFE. We show that t…
Discoveries of extended rotation curves have suggested the presence of dark matter in spiral galaxy haloes. It has led to many studies that estimated the galaxy total mass, mostly by using the Navarro Frenk and White (NFW) density profile. We aim at verifying how the choice of the dark-matter profile may affect the predicted values of extrapolated total masses. We have considered the recent Milky Way (MW) rotation curve, firstly because of its unprecedented accuracy, and secondly because the Galactic disk is amongst the least affected by past major mergers having fully reshaped the initial dis…
We analyze the radial distribution of HI gas for 23 disk galaxies with unusually high HI content from the Bluedisk sample, along with a similar-sized sample of "normal" galaxies. We propose an empirical model to fit the radial profile of the HI surface density, an exponential function with a depression near the center. The radial HI surface density profiles are very homogeneous in the outer regions of the galaxy; the exponentially declining part of the profile has a scale-length of $\sim 0.18$ R1, where R1 is the radius where the column density of the HI is 1 M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$. This holds …
In this work we study rotation curves of spiral galaxies using a model of dark matter based on a scalar-tensor theory of gravity. We show how to estimate the scalar field dark matter parameters using a sample of observed rotation curves.
Stellar bars and spiral arms co-exist and co-evolve in most disc galaxies in the local Universe. However, the physical nature of this interaction remains a matter of debate. In this work, we present a set of numerical simulations based on isolated galactic models aimed to explore how the bar properties affect the induced spiral structure. We cover a large combination of bar properties, including the bar length, axial ratio, mass and rotation rate. We use three galactic models describing galaxies with rising, flat and declining rotation curves. We found that the pitch angle best correlates with…
We explore a large uniformly selected sample of H$α$ selected star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at z=0.40,0.84,1.47,2.23 to unveil the evolution of the star formation rate (SFR) function and the stellar mass function. We find strong evolution in the SFR function, with the typical SFR of SFGs declining exponentially with time in the last 11Gyrs as SFR$^*$(T[Gyr])=10$^{4.23/T+0.37}$ M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, but with no evolution in the faint-end slope, $α\approx$-1.6. The stellar mass function of SFGs, however, reveals little evolution: $α \approx$-1.4, M$^*$$\approx$10$^{11.2\pm0.2}$ M$_{\odot}$ and ju…
The Rastall gravity is a modification of Einstein's general relativity, in which the energy-momentum conservation is not satisfied and depends on the gradient of the Ricci curvature. It is in dispute whether the Rastall gravity is equivalent to the general relativity (GR). In this work, we constrain the theory using the rotation curves of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) spiral galaxies. Through fitting the rotation curves of LSB galaxies, we obtain the parameter $β$ of the Rastall gravity. The $β$ values of LSB galaxies satisfy Weak Energy Condition (WEC) and Strong Energy Condition(SEC). Combini…
Counter-rotating galaxies host two components rotating in opposite directions with respect to each other. The kinematic and morphological properties of lenticulars and spirals hosting counter-rotating components are reviewed. Statistics of the counter-rotating galaxies and analysis of their stellar populations provide constraints on the formation scenarios which include both environmental and internal processes.
Modified Gravity (MOG) and Non-Local Gravity (NLG) are two alternative theories to General Relativity. They are able to explain the rotation curves of spiral galaxies and clusters of galaxies without including dark matter (Moffat & Rahvar 2013, 2014; Rahvar & Mashhoon 2014). In the weak-field approximation these two theories have similar forms, with an effective gravitational potential that has two components: (i) Newtonian gravity with the gravitational constant enhanced by a factor $(1+α)$ and (ii) a Yukawa type potential that produces a repulsive force with length scale $1/μ$. In this work …
Analysis of the correlation between the angular positions of distant radio galaxies on the sky and the orientations of their polarization vectors with respect to their major axes, indicates a dipolar anisotropy in the large scale. We consider a single mode of large-scale scalar perturbation to the FRW metric. Using Newman-Penrose formalism, we calculate the rotation of the galaxy major axis with respect to the polarization vector as the elliptic image and the polarization vector are carried through the perturbed space-time. The dependence of the rotation on the polar angular coordinate of the …
By means of high resolution 2D hydrodynamical simulations, we study the evolution of the hot ISM for a large set of early-type galaxy models, characterized by various degrees of flattening and internal rotation. The galaxies are described by state-of-the-art axisymmetric two-component models, tailored to reproduce real systems; the dark matter haloes follow the Navarro-Frenk-White or the Einasto profile. The gas is produced by the evolving stars, and heated by Type Ia SNe. We find that, in general, the rotation field of the ISM in rotating galaxies is very similar to that of the stars, with a …
We discuss a model for the Milky Way obtained by fitting the observed terminal velocities with the radial acceleration relation. The resulting stellar surface density profile departs from a smooth exponential disk, having bumps and wiggles that correspond to massive spiral arms. These features are used to estimate the term for the logarithmic density gradient in the Jeans equation, which turn out to have exactly the right location and amplitude to reconcile the apparent discrepancy between the stellar rotation curve and that of the interstellar gas. This model also predicts a gradually declini…
I consider the observed rotation curves of 12 gas-dominated low-surface-brightness galaxies -- objects in which the mass of gas ranges between 2.2 and 27 times the mass of the stellar disk (mean=9.4). This means that, in the usual decomposition of rotation curves into those resulting from various mass components, the mass-to-light ratio of the luminous stellar disk effectively vanishes as an additional adjustable parameter. It is seen that the observed rotation curves reflect the observed structure in gas surface density distribution often in detail. This fact is difficult to comprehend in the…
Although there has been much progress in understanding how galaxies evolve, we still do not understand how and when they stop forming stars and become quiescent. We address this by applying our galaxy spectral energy distribution models, which incorporate physically motivated star formation histories (SFHs) from cosmological simulations, to a sample of quiescent galaxies at $0.2<z<2.1$. A total of 845 quiescent galaxies with multi-band photometry spanning rest-frame ultraviolet through near-infrared wavelengths are selected from the CANDELS dataset. We compute median SFHs of these galaxies in …
We present the results of study of the ionized gas velocity fields in 28 nearby (systemic velocity below 1000 km/s) dwarf galaxies. The observations were made at the 6-m BTA telescope of the SAO RAS with the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer in the H-alpha emission line. We were able to measure regular circular rotation parameters in 25 galaxies. As a rule, rotation velocities measured in HII are in a good agreement with the data on the HI kinematics at the same radii. Three galaxies reveal position angles of the kinematic axis in the HII velocity fields that strongly (tens of degrees) diffe…
We present an analysis of the distribution of 77 supernovae (SNe) Ia relative to spiral arms of their Sab-Scd host galaxies, using our original measurements of the SN distances from the nearby arms, and study their light curve decline rates ($Δm_{15}$). For the galaxies with prominent spiral arms, we show that the $Δm_{15}$ values of SNe Ia, which are located on the arms, are typically smaller (slower declining) than those of interarm SNe Ia (faster declining). We demonstrate that the SN Ia distances from the spiral arms and their galactocentric radii are correlated: before and after the avera…
The data of velocity rotation curve in spiral galaxies, almost for galaxies which have close central surface brightness, collapse onto a universal scaling function. Since scaling functions are the signature of emergence in complex systems we are led to the idea that explanation of constant velocity in spiral galaxies needs considering cooperative behavior instead of interpretation based on reductionism approach.
We explore the stellar mass density and colour profiles of 118 low redshift, massive, central galaxies, selected to have assembled 90 percent of their stellar mass 6 Gyr ago, finding evidence of the minor merger activity expected to be the driver behind the size growth of quiescent galaxies. We use imaging data in the $g, r, i, z, y$ bands from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey and perform SED fitting to construct spatially well-resolved radial profiles in colour and stellar mass surface density. Our visual morphological classification reveals that $\sim 42$ percent of our sample displays ti…
We present the stellar velocity maps of 25 massive early type galaxies located in dense environments observed with MUSE. Galaxies are selected to be brighter than M_K=-25.7 magnitude, reside in the core of the Shapley Super Cluster or be the brightest galaxy in clusters richer than the Virgo Cluster. We thus targeted galaxies more massive than 10^12 Msun and larger than 10 kpc (half-light radius). The velocity maps show a large variety of kinematic features: oblate-like regular rotation, kinematically distinct cores and various types of non-regular rotation. The kinematic misalignment angles s…
The thermal history of the Universe is included in the Debye Gravitational Theory (DGT) to describe the speed of rotation of the galaxies. The DGT incorporate the temperature of Debye in the entropic gravitational theory. According to the DGT, the expression of the rotation of the galaxies is not a continuous function of the redshift, there is a discontinuity at $\sim 0.77$. According to their redshift, the galaxies form two groups. (a) Those with redshift above 0.77 with declining rotation curves like $R^β$ with $β\leq -0.5$ (Newtonian regime). (b) Those with redshift below 0.77 with rising r…
In this paper we propose a new method for reconstructing the surface density of matter in flat disks of spiral galaxies. The surface density is expressed through observational rotation velocity curves of visible matter in the disks of spiral galaxies. The new method is not based on quadrature of special functions. The found solution is used for processing and analysis of observational data from several spiral galaxies. The new method can be used to more accurately estimate the amount of dark matter in spiral galaxies.
We present stellar rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles for 104 quiescent galaxies at $z=0.6-1$ from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) spectroscopic survey. Rotation is typically probed across 10-20kpc, or to an average of 2.7${\rm R_e}$. Combined with central stellar velocity dispersions ($σ_0$) this provides the first determination of the dynamical state of a sample selected by a lack of star formation activity at large lookback time. The most massive galaxies ($M_{\star}>2\times10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$) generally show no or little rotation measured at 5kpc ($|V_5|/σ…
[PASJ Review Paper] Rotation curves are the basic tool for deriving the distribution of mass in spiral galaxies. In this review, we describe various methods to measure rotation curves in the Milky Way and spiral galaxies. We then describe two major methods to calculate the mass distribution using the rotation curve. By the direct method, the mass is calculated from rotation velocities without employing mass models. By the decomposition method, the rotation curve is deconvolved into multiple mass components by model fitting assuming a black hole, bulge, exponential disk and dark halo. The decom…
The space density distribution of galaxies in the absolute magnitude - rotation velocity plane: a volume-complete Tully-Fisher relation from CALIFA stellar kinematics
We present a systematic analysis of the rotation curves of 187 galaxies with masses greater than 10^10 M_sol, with atomic gas masses from the GALEX Arecibo Sloan Survey (GASS), and with follow-up long-slit spectroscopy from the MMT. Our analysis focuses on stellar rotation curves derived by fitting stellar template spectra to the galaxy spectra binned along the slit. In this way, we are able to obtain accurate rotation velocity measurements for a factor of 2 more galaxies than possible with the Halpha line. Galaxies with high atomic gas mass fractions are the most dark-matter dominated galaxie…
Tens of early type galaxies have been recently reported to possess prolate rotation, i.e. significant amount of rotation around the major axis, including two cases in the Local Group. Although expected theoretically, this phenomenon is rarely observed and remains elusive. In order to explore its origin we study the population of well-resolved galaxies in the Illustris cosmological simulation. We identify 59 convincing examples of prolate rotators at the present time, more frequently among more massive galaxies, with the number varying very little with redshift. We follow their evolution back i…
The rotation of the galactic halos is a fascinating topic which is still waiting to be addressed. Planck data has shown the existence of a temperature asymmetry towards the halo of several nearby galaxies, such as M31, NGC 5128, M33, M81, and M82. However, the cause of this asymmetry is an open problem. A possibility to explain the observed effect relies on the presence of "cold gas clouds" populating the galactic halos, which may be the answer to the so-called missing baryon problem. Here, we present a technique to estimate an upper limit to the rotational velocity of the halo of some nearby …
We compare the CO(1-0) and H$α$ kinematics in 34 nearby galaxies, selected from the ALMaQUEST and EDGE-CALIFA surveys. We use 3-D Barolo, a 3D tilted ring model, to derive the CO and H$α$ rotation curves. Before comparing rotation curves in the 34 nearby galaxies, we found systematics between the MaNGA and the CALIFA data using eight MaNGA-CALIFA overlapping galaxies. We assume the rotation curves based on the MaNGA data are accurate and made the corresponding correction to the CALIFA data. Our result shows that $\sim$56% (19/34) of our galaxies present slower H$α$ rotation curves compared to …
We derive rotation curves, surface brightness profiles, and oxygen abundance distributions for 147 late-type galaxies using the publicly available spectroscopy obtained by the MaNGA survey. Changes of the central oxygen abundance (O/H)_0, the abundance at the optical radius (O/H)_R25, and the abundance gradient with rotation velocity V_rot are examined for galaxies with rotation velocities from 90 km/s to 350 km/s. We found that each relation shows a break at V_rot^* ~200 km/s. The central (O/H)_0 abundance increases with rising V_rot and the slope of the (O/H)_0 - V_rot relation is steeper fo…
We consider the largest sample of 561 edge-on galaxies observed with integral field units by the MaNGA survey and find 300 galaxies where the ionised gas shows a negative vertical gradient (lag) in its rotational speed. We introduce the stop altitude as the distance to the galactic midplane at which the gas rotation should stop in the linear approximation. We find correlations between the lags, stop altitude and galactic mass, stellar velocity dispersion and overall Sersic index. We do not find any correlation of the lags or stop altitude with the star formation activity in the galaxies. We co…
It has been shown that the weak-interacting limit of the metric-skew-tensor-gravity (MSTG) can explain the anomalous rotation of galaxies without non-baryonic dark matter. We show that MSTG is related to the equilibrium-state of ordinary Brownian motion. We also explore if other stochastic processes can model anomalous rotation. Furthermore, we analyze phase-diagrams that elucidate the condensation of a gravitating cloud towards a Kepler-Newton system and illustrate regions of existence of rotating objects.
Rotation curves have traditionally been difficult to trace for early-type galaxies (ETGs) because they often lack a high-density disk of cold gas as in late-type galaxies (LTGs). We derive rotation curves for three lenticular galaxies from the ATLAS3D survey, combining CO data in the inner parts with deep HI data in the outer regions, extending out to 10-20 effective radii. We also use Spitzer photometry at 3.6 um to decompose the rotation curves into the contributions of baryons and dark matter (DM). We find that (1) the rotation-curve shapes of these ETGs are similar to those of LTGs of simi…
The thermal history of the Universe is introduced within the Debye Gravitational Theory (DGT), a thermodynamic theory of induced gravity, and allows to obtain the evolution of systems with the redshift. DGT reproduce the ESO VLT observations, showing falling outer rotation curves for galaxies at redshift above 0.77. A scaling law is observed in the radial acceleration relation (RAR) of galaxies. For accelerations smaller than $\sim 10^{-10}ms^{-1}$ the observed acceleration $g_{obs}$ decreases more slowly than acceleration generated by the baryonic mass $g_{bar}$, following always the relation…
We present a comparative study of molecular and ionized gas kinematics in nearby galaxies. These results are based on observations from the EDGE survey, which measured spatially resolved $^{12}$CO(J=1-0) in 126 nearby galaxies. Every galaxy in EDGE has corresponding resolved ionized gas measurements from CALIFA. Using a sub-sample of 17 rotation dominated, star-forming galaxies where precise molecular gas rotation curves could be extracted, we derive CO and H$α$ rotation curves using the same geometric parameters out to $\gtrsim$1 $R_e$. We find that $\sim$75% of our sample galaxies have small…
The spiral arms spanning disk galaxies are believed to be created by density waves that propagate through galactic disks. We present a novel method of finding the co-rotation radius where the spiral arm pattern speed matches the velocities of the stars within the disk. Our method uses an image-overlay technique, which involves tracing the arms of spiral galaxies on images observed in different wavelengths. Density wave theory predicts that spiral arms observed from different wavelengths show a phase crossing at the co-rotation radius. For the purpose of this study, 20 nearby galaxies were anal…
The study of the evolution of star-forming galaxies requires the determination of accurate kinematics and scaling relations out to high redshift. In this paper we select a sample of 18 galaxies at z~1, observed in the H-alpha emission-line with KMOS, to derive accurate kinematics using a novel 3D analysis technique. We use the new code 3D-Barolo, that models the galaxy emission directly in the 3D observational space, without the need to extract kinematic maps. This technique's major advantage is that it is not affected by beam smearing and thus it enables the determination of rotation velocity…
We analyse maps of the spatially-resolved nebular emission of $\approx$1500 star-forming galaxies at $z\approx0.6$-$2.2$ from deep KMOS and MUSE observations to measure the average shape of their rotation curves. We use these to test claims for declining rotation curves at large radii in galaxies at $z\approx1$-$2$ that have been interpreted as evidence for an absence of dark matter. We show that the shape of the average rotation curves, and the extent to which they decline beyond their peak velocities, depends upon the normalisation prescription used to construct the average curve. Normalisin…
Observations of Faraday rotation through high-redshift galaxies have revealed that they host coherent magnetic fields that are of comparable strengths to those observed in nearby galaxies. These fields could be generated by fluctuation dynamos. We use idealized numerical simulations of such dynamos in forced compressible turbulence up to rms Mach number of 2.4 to probe the resulting rotation measure (RM) and the degree of coherence of the magnetic field. We obtain rms values of RM at dynamo saturation of the order of 45 - 55 per cent of the value expected in a model where fields are assumed to…
Faraday rotation is one of the most widely used observables to infer the strength and configuration of the magnetic field in the ionised gas of the Milky Way and nearby spiral galaxies. Here we compute synthetic Faraday rotation maps at $z=0$ for a set of disk galaxies from the Auriga high-resolution cosmological simulations, for different observer positions within and outside the galaxy. We find that the strength of the Faraday rotation of our simulated galaxies for a hypothetic observer at the solar circle is broadly consistent with the Faraday rotation seen for the Milky Way. The same holds…
\textbf{GalRotpy} is an educational \verb+Python3+-based visual tool, which is useful to undestand how is the contribution of each mass component to the gravitational potential of disc-like galaxies by means of their rotation curve. Besides, \textbf{GalRotpy} allows the user to perform a parametric fit of a given rotation curve, which relies on a MCMC procedure implemented by using \verb+emcee+ package. Here the gravitational potential of disc-like galaxies is built from the contribution of a Miyamoto-Nagai potential model for the bulge/core and the thin/thick disc, an exponential disc, togeth…
We present new evidence for eight early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the CALIFA Survey that show clear rotation around their major photometric axis ("prolate rotation"). These are LSBCF560-04, NGC 0647, NGC 0810, NGC 2484, NGC 4874, NGC 5216, NGC 6173 and NGC 6338. Including NGC 5485, a known case of an ETG with stellar prolate rotation, as well as UGC 10695, a further possible candidate for prolate rotation, we report ten CALIFA galaxies in total that show evidence for such a feature in their stellar kinematics. Prolate rotators correspond to ~9% of the volume-corrected sample of CALIFA ETGs, a …
We present results of a study comparing the relative velocity of $\rm Lyα$ absorbers to the rotation velocity of nearby galaxy disks in the local universe ($z \leq 0.03$). We have obtained rotation curves via long-slit spectroscopy of eight galaxies with the Southern African Large Telescope, and combine this dataset with an additional 16 galaxies with data from the literature. Each galaxy appears within $3R_{\rm vir}$ of a QSO sightline with archival Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (COS) spectra. We study the velocity orientation of absorbers with respect to nearby galaxy's rotation, and compare wi…
