We present an analysis of the broad absorption line (BAL) velocity shift that appeared in one of the outflow systems in quasar SDSS J1042+1646. Observations were taken by the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origin Spectrograph in 2011 and 2017 in the 500 -- 1050 $Å$ rest frame. The outflow's velocity centroid shifted by $\sim$ --1550 km s$^{-1}$ from --19,500 km s$^{-1}$ to --21,050 km s$^{-1}$ over a rest-frame time of 3.2 yr. The velocity shift signatures are most apparent in the absorption features from the Ne VIII $λλ$ 770.41, 780.32 doublet and are supported by the absorption troughs from OV $λ$ 629.73 and the Mg X $λλ$ 609.79, 624.94 doublet. This is the first time where a quasar outflow velocity shift is observed in troughs from more than one ion and in distinct troughs from a doublet transition (Ne VIII). We attribute the velocity shift to an acceleration of an existing outflow as we are able to exclude photoionization changes and motion of material into and out of the line of sight as alternate explanations. This leads to an average acceleration of 480 km s$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ (1.52 cm s$^{-2}$) in the quasar rest frame. Both the acceleration and the absolute velocity shift are the largest reported for a quasar outflow to date. Based on the absorption troughs of the O V* multiplet, we derive a range for the distance of the outflow ($R$) from the central source, 0.05 pc $<$ $R$ $<$ 54.3 pc. This outflow shows similarities with the fast X-ray outflow detected in quasar PG 1211+143. We use the acceleration and velocity shift to constrain radiatively accelerated active galactic nucleus disk-wind models and use them to make predictions for future observations.
We present the analysis of two outflows (S1 at --5500 km s$^{-1}$ and S2 at --9700 km s$^{-1}$) seen in recent HST/COS observations of quasar SDSS J0755+2306 (z = 0.854). The outflows are detected as absorption troughs from both high-ionization species, including N III, O III, and S IV, and very high-ionization species, including Ar VIII, Ne VIII, and Na IX. The derived photoionization solutions show that each outflow requires a two ionization-phase solution. For S1, troughs from S IV* and S IV allow us to derive an electron number density, $n_{e}$ = 1.8$\times$10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$, and its distan…
From Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph spectra of five quasars, 16 outflows are detected. For 11 outflows, we are able to constrain their distances to the central source (R) and their energetics. In instances of multiple electron number density determinations (used in the calculation of R) for the same outflow, the values are consistent within errors. For the 11 outflows, eight have measurements for R (between 10 and 1000 pc), one has a lower limit, another has an upper limit, and the last has a range in R. There are two outflows that have enough kinetic luminosity to be major…
We present low-resolution near-infrared stacked spectra from the 3D-HST survey up to $z=2.0$ and fit them with commonly used stellar population synthesis models: BC03 (Bruzual & Charlot, 2003), FSPS10 (Flexible Stellar Population Synthesis, Conroy & Gunn 2010), and FSPS-C3K (Conroy, Kurucz, Cargile, Castelli, in prep). The accuracy of the grism redshifts allows the unambiguous detection of many emission and absorption features, and thus a first systematic exploration of the rest-frame optical spectra of galaxies up to $z=2$. We select massive galaxies ($\rm log(M_{*} / M_{\odot}) > 10.8$), we …
We analyze absorption troughs from two outflows within PKS J0352-0711 (S1 at $-$1950 km s$^{-1}$ and S2 at $-$3150 km s$^{-1}$) from spectra taken with Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origin Spectrograph, which cover the diagnostic-rich 585-900 Angstrom rest frame wavelength range. In S2, for the first time we clearly detect absorption troughs from Ca IV, Ca V, Ca V*, Ca VII*, and Ca VIII*. The column density measurement of Ca V suggests S2 has a super-solar metallicity. Both outflows require at least two ionization phases where the column density of the very high-ionization phase is roughly 15 …
We present ~0.15'' spatial resolution imaging of SHiZELS-14, a massive (M*~10^11 M_sol), dusty, star-forming galaxy at z=2.24. Our rest-frame ~1kpc-scale, matched-resolution data comprise four different widely used tracers of star formation: the H-alpha emission line (from SINFONI/VLT), rest-frame UV continuum (from HST F606W imaging), the rest-frame far-infrared (from ALMA), and the radio continuum (from JVLA). Although originally identified by its modest H-alpha emission line flux, SHiZELS-14 appears to be a vigorously star-forming (SFR~1000 M_sol/yr) example of a submillimeter galaxy, proba…
We present a study of the BAL outflows seen in quasar SDSS J1042+1646 (z = 0.978) in the rest-frame 500 -- 1050 $Å$ (EUV500) region. The results are based on the analysis of recent Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations. Five outflow systems are identified, where in total they include $\sim$70 outflow troughs from ionic transitions. These include the first non-solar detections from transitions of O V*, Ne V*, Ar VI, Ca VI, Ca VII, and Ca VIII. The appearance of very high-ionization species (e.g., Ne VIII, Na IX, and Mg X) in all outflows necessitates at least two-ioniz…
The rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are important diagnostics of both accretion disk physics and their contribution to the metagalactic ionizing UV background. Though the mean AGN spectrum is well characterized with composite spectra at wavelengths greater than 912 Angstroms, the shorter-wavelength extreme-UV (EUV) remains poorly studied. In this third paper in a series on the spectra of AGNs, we combine 11 new spectra taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope with archival spectra to characterize the typical EUV spectral slop…
The abundance of bright galaxies at z>8 can provide key constraints on models of galaxy formation and evolution, as the predicted abundance varies greatly when different physical prescriptions for gas cooling and star formation are implemented. We present the results of a search for bright z=9-10 galaxies selected from pure-parallel Hubble Space Telescope imaging programs. We include 132 fields observed as part of the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies survey, the Hubble Infrared Pure Parallel Imaging Extragalactic Survey, and the WFC3 Infrared Spectroscopic Parallel survey. These observations c…
We present both the observations and the data reduction procedures of the Subaru COSMOS 20 project that is an optical imaging survey of the HST COSMOS field, carried out by using Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope with the following 20 optical filters: 6 broad-band (B, g', V, r', i', and z'), 2 narrow-band (NB711 and NB816), and 12 intermediate-band filters (IA427, IA464, IA484, IA505, IA527, IA574, IA624, IA679, IA709, IA738, IA767, and IA827). A part of this project is described in Taniguchi et al. (2007) and Capak et al. (2007) for the six broad-band and one narrow-band (NB816) filter data…
We detect four very energetic outflows in the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origin Spectrograph spectra of quasar 2MASS J1051+1247 with a combined kinetic luminosity ($\dot{E_k}$) of 10$^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Remarkable similarities are seen in these outflows: velocity centroids between 4900 and 5700 km s$^{-1}$, distances from the central source ($R$) of a few hundred parsecs that are all consistent within the errors, and an $\dot{E_k}$ within a factor of two for all outflows. Hence, a common origin for the outflows is probable. Most of the outflowing mass resides in a very high-ionization phas…
We present HST/WFC3 multiband imagery of N103B, the remnant of a Type Ia supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud, as well as HST/COS ultraviolet spectroscopy of the brightest radiatively shocked region. The images show a wide range of morphology and relative emission-line intensities, from smooth Balmer-line dominated collisionless shocks due to the primary blast wave, to clumpy radiative shock filaments due to secondary shocks in density enhancements. The COS data show strong FUV line emission despite a moderately high extinction along this line of sight. We use the COS data with previous opt…
To elucidate the location, physical conditions, mass outflow rate, and kinetic luminosity of the outflow from the active nucleus of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 we used coordinated ultraviolet and X-ray spectral observations in 2012 to follow up our lengthier campaign conducted in 2009. We observed Mrk 509 with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) on 2012-09-03 and 2012-10-11 coordinated with X-ray observations using the High Energy Transmission Grating on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Our far-ultraviolet spectra used grating G140L on COS to cover waveleng…
The Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) has opened a new discovery space for studying quasar absorption outflows and their contribution to AGN feedback. Specifically, COS provides high-quality far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectra covering the diagnostic-rich 500-1050 Angstrom rest frame (hereafter, EUV500) of medium redshift objects. The quality and quantity of EUV500 diagnostic troughs allow us to probe the very high-ionization phase, which carries 90% or more of the outflowing material, as well as to determine the distance of most outflows from the central source ($R$). The fir…
Ultraviolet (UV) observations of local star-forming galaxies have begun to establish an empirical baseline for interpreting the rest-UV spectra of reionization-era galaxies. However, existing high-ionization emission line measurements at $z>6$ ($\mathrm{W_{C IV, 0}} \gtrsim 20$ Å) are uniformly stronger than observed locally ($\mathrm{W_{C IV, 0}} \lesssim 2$ Å), likely due to the relatively high metallicities ($Z/Z_\odot > 0.1$) typically probed by UV surveys of nearby galaxies. We present new HST/COS spectra of six nearby ($z<0.01$) extremely metal-poor galaxies (XMPs, $Z/Z_\odot \lesssim 0.…
We present the largest systematic, HST-based search to date for luminous $z\gtrsim8$ galaxy candidates using $\sim$1267 arcmin$^{2}$ of (pure-)parallel observations from a compilation of 288 random sightlines with ACS and WFC3 observations, derived from the SuperBoRG data set and together representing a factor $\sim1.12\times$ larger than existing space-based data sets. Using NIR color cuts and careful photo-$z$ analyses, we find 31 $z\gtrsim8$ galaxy candidates over 29 unique sightlines, and derive global galaxy properties such as UV magnitudes and continuum slopes, sizes, and rest-frame opti…
We have performed a detailed analysis of the electron temperature and density in the the Ring Nebula using the calibrated HST WFC3 images described in the preceding paper. The electron temperature (Te) determined from [N II] and [O III] rises slightly and monotonically towards the central star. The observed equivalent width (EW) in the central region indicates that Te rises as high as 13000 K. In contrast, the low EW's in the outer regions are largely due to scattered diffuse Galactic radiation by dust. The images allowed determination of unprecedented small scale variations in Te. These varia…
Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) Galaxies are an important type of active galactic nucleus (AGN), generally expected to be accreting at high Eddington rate. The properties of their outflows and importance of AGN feedback remain intriguing. We report on the discovery of fast outflowing warm absorbers (WAs) in the NLS1 PG 1001+054, with velocities in the range of 7000 to 9000 kilometers per second. They are identified with blueshifted Lyman alpha, N v and Si iv lines in the high resolution ultraviolet (UV) spectra taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (H…
We present basic data and modeling for a survey of the cool, photo-ionized Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM) of low-redshift galaxies using far-UV QSO absorption line probes. This survey consists of "targeted" and "serendipitous" CGM subsamples, originally described in Stocke et al. (2013, Paper 1). The targeted subsample probes low-luminosity, late-type galaxies at $z<0.02$ with small impact parameters ($\langleρ\rangle = 71$ kpc), and the serendipitous subsample probes higher luminosity galaxies at $z\lesssim0.2$ with larger impact parameters ($\langleρ\rangle = 222$ kpc). HST and FUSE UV spectro…
We present a new method to model a HST/COS spectrum, aimed to analyze intrinsic UV absorption from the outflow of Mrk 290, a Seyfert I galaxy. We use newly updated XSTAR to generate photoionization models for the intrinsic absorption from the AGN outflow, the line emission from the AGN broad and narrow line regions, and the local absorption from high velocity clouds and Galactic interstellar medium. The combination of these physical models accurately fit the COS spectrum. Three intrinsic absorbers outflowing with velocities ~500 km/s are identified, two of which are found directly from two vel…
To characterize the absorption properties of this circumgalactic medium (CGM) and its relation to the LG we present the so-far largest survey of metal absorption in Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs) using archival ultraviolet (UV) spectra of extragalactic background sources. The UV data are obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and are supplemented by 21 cm radio observations of neutral hydrogen. Along 270 sightlines we measure metal absorption in the lines of SiII, SiIII, CII, and CIV and associated HI 21 cm emission in HVCs in the vel…
We report the detection of accreting ionized gas at the disk-halo interface of the nearby galaxy M33. We analyze HST/COS absorption-line spectra of seven ultraviolet-bright stars evenly distributed across the disk of M33. We find Si IV absorption components consistently redshifted relative to the bulk M33's ISM absorption along all the sightlines. The Si IV detection indicates an enriched, disk-wide, ionized gas inflow toward the disk. This inflow is most likely multi-phase as the redshifted components can also be observed in ions with lower ionization states (e.g., S II, P II, Fe II, Si II). …
We analyze new HST/COS spectra for two quasar absorption outflows seen in the quasi-stellar object LBQS 1206+1052. These data cover, for the first time, absorption troughs from $S_{IV}$, $Si_{II}$, and $P_V$. From the ratio of the $S_{IV}$* to $S_{IV}$ column densities, we measure the electron number density of the higher-velocity ($-1400$ km s$^{-1}$, v1400) outflow to be log($n_e$) = $4.23^{+0.09}_{-0.09}$ cm$^{-3}$ and constrain the lower-velocity ($-730$ km s$^{-1}$, v700) outflow to log($n_e$) $>$ $5.3$ cm$^{-3}$. The $n_e$ associated with the higher-velocity outflow is an order of magnit…
We present kpc-scale ALMA and HST imaging of the quasar PJ308-21 at $z$=$6.2342$, tracing dust, gas (via the [CII] 158 $μ$m line) and young stars. At a resolution of $\sim0.3''$ ($\approx1.7$ kpc), the system is resolved over $>4''$ ($>$20 kpc). In particular, it features a main component, identified to be the quasar host galaxy, centered on the accreting supermassive black hole; and two other extended components on the West and East side, one redshifted and the other blueshifted relative to the quasar. The [CII] emission of the entire system stretches over $>$1500 km/s along the line of sight…
We present a detailed analysis of the absorption properties of one of the tidal gas streams around the Whale galaxy NGC4631 in the direction of the quasar 2MASSJ12421031+3214268. Our study is based on ultraviolet spectral data obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and 21cm-data from the HALOGAS project and the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). We detect strong HI Ly alpha absorption in the velocity range +550 to +800 km s^-1 related to gas from a NGC4631 tidal stream known as Spur 2. We measure a column density of log N(HI)=18.68pm0.15, indicati…
The metallicity of galactic gaseous halos provides insights into accretion and feedback of galaxies. The nearby edge-on galaxy NGC 891 has a multi-component gaseous halo and a background AGN (LQAC 035+042 003) projected 5 kpc above the disk near the minor axis. Against the UV continuum of this AGN, we detect lines from 13 ions associated with NGC 891 in new {\it HST}/COS spectra. Most of the absorption is from the warm ionized gas with $\log T=4.22\pm0.04$, $\log n_{\rm H}=-1.26\pm0.51$, and $\log N_{\rm H}=20.81\pm 0.20$. The metallicity of volatile elements (i.e., C, N, and S) is about half …
Understanding the escape of ionizing (Lyman continuum) photons from galaxies is vital for determining how galaxies contributed to reionization in the early universe. While directly detecting Lyman continuum from high redshift galaxies is impossible due to the intergalactic medium, low redshift galaxies in principle offer this possibility, but requirie observations from space. The first local galaxy for which Lyman continuum escape was found is Haro11 , a luminous blue compact galaxy at z=0.02, where observations with the FUSE satellite revealed an escape fraction of 3.3 %. However the FUSE ape…
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has been providing tremendous survey efficiency via its pure-parallel mode, by observing another field in parallel with the primary instrument in operation for the primary observation. In this study, we present a new archival project, SuperBoRG, which aims at compiling data taken in extragalactic parallel programs of HST with WFC3 in the past decade; including pure-parallel (BoRG, HIPPIES, and COS-GTO) and coordinated-parallel (CLASH and RELICS) programs. The total effective area reaches $\sim0.41$deg$^2$ from 4.1Msec, or 47days, of observing time, which is the…
We use Hubble Space Telescope near-IR grism spectroscopy to examine the H-beta line strengths of 260 star-forming galaxies in the redshift range 1.90 < z < 2.35. We show that at these epochs, the H-beta star formation rate (SFR) is a factor of ~1.8 higher than what would be expected from the systems' rest-frame UV flux density, suggesting a shift in the standard conversion between these quantities and star formation rate. We demonstrate that at least part of this shift can be attributed to metallicity, as H-beta is more greatly enhanced in systems with lower oxygen abundance. This offset must …
We present the results of a systematic search for molecular hydrogen (H2) in low redshift ($ 0.05 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$) DLAs and sub-DLAs with $N(HI) \gtrsim 10^{19.0}$ cm$^{-2}$, in the archival HST/COS spectra. Our core sample is comprised of 27 systems with a median $\log N(HI) = 19.6$. On the average, our survey is sensitive down to $\log N(H2) = 14.4$ corresponding to a molecular fraction of $\log f_{H2} = -4.9$ at the median $N(HI)$. H2 is detected in 10 cases (3/5 DLAs and 7/22 sub-DLAs) down to this $f_{H2}$ limit. The H2 detection rate of $50^{+25}_{-12}$ percent seen in our sampl…
We investigate the spatial distribution of Lyman-$α$ (Ly $α$) absorbers within cosmic voids. We create a catalogue of cosmic voids in Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) with the VoidFinder algorithm of the Void Analysis Software Toolkit (VAST). Using the largest catalogue of low-redshift (z $\leq$ 0.75) IGM absorbers to date, we identify 392 Ly $α$ absorbers inside voids. The fraction of Ly $α$ absorbers inside voids (65 per cent) is comparable to the volume filling fraction of voids (68 per cent), and significantly greater than the fraction of galaxies inside voids (21 per cen…
We show a comparison of the rest-frame UV morphologies of a sample of 162 intermediate redshift (median redshift 1.02) galaxies with their rest-frame optical morphologies. We select our sample from the deepest near-UV image obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) using the WFPC2 (F300W) as part of the parallel observations of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field campaign overlapping with the HST/ACS GOODS dataset. We perform single component Sersic fits in both WFPC2/F300W (rest-frame UV) and ACS/F850LP (rest-frame optical) bands and deduce that the Sersic index $n$ is estimated to be smaller in…

This is the first in a series of three papers describing a project with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope to measure abundances of the neutral interstellar medium (ISM) in a sample of 9 nearby star-forming galaxies. The goal is to assess the (in)homogeneities of the multiphase ISM in galaxies where the bulk of metals can be hidden in the neutral phase, yet the metallicity is inferred from the ionized gas in the HII regions. The sample, spanning a wide range in physical properties, is to date the best suited to investigate the metallicity behavior of the neutral gas …
We examine the rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) properties of 10 [CII]$\lambda158\,{\rm μm}$$-$detected galaxies at $z\sim5.5$ in COSMOS using new HST/WFC3 near-infrared imaging. Together with pre-existing $158\,{\rm μm}-$continuum and [CII] line measurements by ALMA, we study their dust attenuation properties on the IRX-$β$ diagram, which connects the total dust emission ($\propto$ IRX=log($L_{FIR}/L_{1600}$)) to the line-of-sight dust column ($\proptoβ$). We find systematically bluer UV continuum spectral slopes ($β$) compared to previous low-resolution ground-based measurements, which relieves …
We report on the detection of deuterated molecular hydrogen, HD, at $z = 0.18$. HD and H$_{\rm 2}$ are detected in HST/COS data of a low metallicity ($Z \sim 0.07Z_\odot$) damped Ly$α$ system at $z = 0.18562$ toward QSO B0120$-$28, with log $N$(H I) = 20.50 $\pm$ 0.10. Four absorption components are clearly resolved in H$_{\rm 2}$ while two components are resolved in HD; the bulk of the molecular hydrogen is associated with the components traced by HD. We find total column densities log $N$(HD) = 14.82 $\pm$ 0.15 and log $N$(H$_{\rm 2}$) = 20.00 $\pm$ 0.10. This system has a high molecular fra…
We present far-UV spectroscopy from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope of a cool, star-forming filament in the core of Abell 1795. These data, which span 1025A - 1700A, allow for the simultaneous modeling of the young stellar populations and the intermediate-temperature (10^5.5 K) gas in this filament, which is far removed (~30 kpc) from the direct influence of the central AGN. Using a combination of UV absorption line indices and stellar population synthesis modeling, we find evidence for ongoing star formation, with the youngest stars having ages of 7.5 +/- 2.0 Myr…
We present the first quantitative UV spectroscopic analysis of resolved OB stars in IC1613. Because of its alleged very low metallicity (<~1/10 Zo, from HII regions), studies in this Local Group dwarf galaxy could become a significant step forward from the SMC towards the extremely metal-poor massive stars of the early Universe. We present HST-COS data covering the ~1150-1800Å wavelength range with resolution R~2500. We find that the targets do exhibit wind features, and these are similar in strength to SMC stars. Wind terminal velocities were derived from the observed PCygni profiles with the…
[abbreviated] We present a census of Lyα emission at $z\gtrsim7$ utilizing deep near infrared HST grism spectroscopy from the first six completed clusters of the Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS). In 24/159 photometrically selected galaxies we detect emission lines consistent with Lyα in the GLASS spectra. Based on the distribution of signal-to-noise ratios and on simulations we expect the completeness and the purity of the sample to be 40-100% and 60-90%, respectively. For the objects without detected emission lines we show that the observed (not corrected for lensing magnificati…
The ionizing fluxes from quasars and other active galactic nuclei (AGN) are critical for interpreting their emission-line spectra and for photoionizing and heating the intergalactic medium (IGM). Using far-ultraviolet spectra from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we directly measure the rest-frame ionizing continua and emission lines for 159 AGN at redshifts 0.001 < z_AGN < 1.476 and construct a composite spectrum from 475-1875A. We identify the underlying AGN continuum and strong EUV emission lines from ions of oxygen, neon, and nitrogen after masking…
We have measured absolute proper motions for the three populations intercepted in the direction of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6681: the cluster itself, the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy and the field. For this we used Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC and WFC3/UVIS optical imaging data separated by a temporal baseline of 5.464 years. Five background galaxies were used to determine the zero point of the absolute-motion reference frame. The resulting absolute proper motion of NGC 6681 is ($μ_α\cosδ, μ_δ$)=($1.58\pm0.18, -4.57\pm0.16$) \masyr. This is the first estimate ever made for th…
To establish the connection between galaxies and UV-detected absorption systems in the local universe, a deep ($g\leq20$) and wide ($\sim20^{\prime}$ radius) galaxy redshift survey is presented around 47 sight lines to UV-bright AGN observed by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). Specific COS science team papers have used this survey to connect absorbers to galaxies, groups of galaxies, and large-scale structures, including voids. Here we present the technical details of the survey and the basic measurements required for its use, including redshifts for individual galaxies and uncertainties…
We present analysis of the UV-spectrum of the low-z AGN IRAS-F22456-5125 obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The spectrum reveals six main kinematic components, spanning a range of velocities of up to 800 km s-1, which for the first time are observed in troughs associated with CII, CIV, NV, SiII, SiIII, SiIV and SIV. We also obtain data on the OVI troughs, which we compare to those available from an earlier FUSE epoch. Column densities measured from these ions allow us to derive a well-constrained photoionization solution for each outflow componen…
We investigate the build-up of galaxies at z~1 using maps of Halpha and stellar continuum emission for a sample of 57 galaxies with rest-frame Halpha equivalent widths >100 Angstroms in the 3D-HST grism survey. We find that the Halpha emission broadly follows the rest-frame R-band light but that it is typically somewhat more extended and clumpy. We quantify the spatial distribution with the half-light radius. The median Halpha effective radius r_e(Halpha) is 4.2+-0.1 kpc but the sizes span a large range, from compact objects with r_e(Halpha) ~ 1.0 kpc to extended disks with r_e(Halpha) ~ 15 kp…
Doubly ionized silicon (SiIII) is a powerful tracer of diffuse ionized gas inside and outside of galaxies. It can be observed in the local Universe in ultraviolet (UV) absorption against bright extragalactic background sources. We here present an extensive study of intervening SiIII-selected absorbers and their relation to the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies at low redshift (z<=0.1), based on the analysis of UV absorption spectra along 303 extragalactic lines of sight obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Along a total redshift p…
We present a new iron abundance analysis of the hyper metal-poor star HE$~$1327-2326, based on Fe II lines detected in its UV spectral range for the first time. In a Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) spectrum, five new Fe II lines could be measured. A Si I line was also detected for the first time. We determine a 1D Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) Fe II abundance of [Fe II/H] = -5.99$\pm$0.25. We also investigate departures from LTE for both Fe I and Fe II lines. Guided by 3D Non-LTE (NLTE) analyses of other well-studied metal-poor stars, we identify potential "residual" 3D effects in HE…
We present measurements of the large-scale (~40 comoving Mpc) effective optical depth of HeII Ly$α$ absorption, $τ_{\rm eff}$, at 2.54<z<3.86 toward 16 HeII-transparent quasars observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), to characterize the ionization state of helium in the intergalactic medium (IGM). We provide the first statistical sample of $τ_{\rm eff}$ measurements in six signal-to-noise ratio >3 HeII sightlines at z>3.5, and study the redshift evolution and sightline-to-sightline variance of $τ_{\rm eff}$ in 24 HeII sightlines. We confirm an i…
We present HST/COS observations of highly ionized absorption lines associated with a radio-loud QSO at $z=1.1319$. The absorption system has multiple velocity components, tracing gas that is largely outflowing from the QSO at velocities of a few 100 km s$^{-1}$. There is an unprecedented range in ionization, with detections of HI, NIII, NIV, NV, OIV, OIV*, OV, OVI, NeVIII, MgX, SV and ArVIII. We estimate the total hydrogen number density from the column density ratio N(OIV*)/N(OIV) to be $\log(n_{\textrm{H}}/\textrm{cm}^3)\sim 3$. Assuming photoionization equilibrium, we derive a distance to t…

Weak spectral features in BL Lacertae objects (BL Lac) often provide a unique opportunity to probe the inner region of this rare type of active galactic nucleus. We present a Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observation of the BL Lac H 2356-309. A weak Ly$α$ emission line was detected. This is the fourth detection of a weak Ly$α$ emission feature in the ultraviolet (UV) band in the so-called "high energy peaked BL Lacs", after Stocke et al. Assuming the line-emitting gas is located in the broad line region (BLR) and the ionizing source is the off-axis jet emission, we constra…
