We evaluate the gluon and quark contributions to the spin of the proton using an ensemble of gauge configuration generated at physical pion mass. We compute all valence and sea quark contributions to high accuracy. We perform a non-perturbative renormalization for both quark and gluon matrix elements. We find that the contribution of the up, down, strange and charm quarks to the proton intrinsic spin is $\frac{1}{2}\sum_{q=u,d,s,c}ΔΣ^{q^+}=0.191(15)$ and to the total spin $\sum_{q=u,d,s,c}J^{q^+}=0.285(45)$. The gluon contribution to the spin is $J^g=0.187(46)$ yielding $J=J^q+J^g=0.473(71)$ confirming the spin sum. The momentum fraction carried by quarks in the proton is found to be $0.618(60)$ and by gluons $0.427(92)$, the sum of which gives $1.045(118)$ confirming the momentum sum rule. All scale and scheme dependent quantities are given in the $\mathrm{ \overline{MS}}$ scheme at 2 GeV.
Working with proton and pion valence distribution functions (DFs) determined consistently at the same, unique hadron scale and exploiting the possibility that there is an effective charge which defines an evolution scheme for DFs that is all-orders exact, we obtain a unified body of predictions for all proton and pion DFs - valence, glue, and four-flavour-separated sea. Whilst the hadron light-front momentum fractions carried by identifiable parton classes are the same for the proton and pion at any scale, the pointwise behaviour of the DFs is strongly hadron-dependent. All calculated distribu…
We investigate the utility of partially twisted boundary conditions in lattice calculations of meson observables. For dynamical simulations, we show that the pion dispersion relation is modified by volume effects. In the isospin limit, we demonstrate that the pion electromagnetic form factor can be computed on the lattice at continuous values of the momentum transfer. Furthermore, the finite volume effects are under theoretical control for extraction of the pion charge radius.
We present an overview of searches fo violation of lepton flavor universality with focus on low energy precision probes using pions, kaons, tau leptons, and nuclear beta decays. The current experimental results are reviewed, the theoretical status within the context of the Standard Model is summarized, and future prospects (both experimental and theoretical) are discussed. We review the implications of these measurements for physics beyond the Standard Model by performing a global model-independent fit to modified $W$ couplings to leptons and four-fermion operators. We also discuss new physics…
We re-analyze the flavor decomposition of the pion-nucleon $σ$-term in the framework of baryon chiral perturbation to fourth order. We employ a covariant and the heavy baryon framework including also the low-lying decuplet. Using only continuum data, we find a small strangeness content of the proton. The uncertainties are, however, large and might be overcome by dedicated lattice QCD calculations.
We present a calculation of the scattering phase shift for the I=2 S-wave pion-pion system in the continuum limit with two-flavor full QCD. Calculations are made at three lattice spacings, using the finite volume method of Lüscher in the center of mass frame, and its extension to the laboratory frame.
Based on our analysis of the contributions from the connected and disconnected contraction diagrams to the pion-kaon scattering amplitude, we provide the first determination of the only free low-energy constant at $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$, known as $L_0^r$, in SU$(4|1)$ Partially-Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory using the data from the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration, $L_0^r(μ=M_ρ) = 0.77(20)(25)(7)(7)(2)\cdot 10^{-3}$. The theory uncertainties originate from the unphysical scattering length, the physical low-energy constants, the higher-oder chiral corrections, the (lattice) meson masses and…
The pion-mass dependence of the nucleon mass within the covariant SU(2) baryon chiral perturbation theory both without and with explicit Delta(1232) degrees of freedom up to order p^4 is investigated. By fitting to lattice QCD data in 2 and 2+1 flavors from several collaborations, for pion masses M_pi < 420 MeV, we obtain low energy constants of natural size and compatible with pion nucleon scattering data. Our results are consistent with the rather linear pion-mass dependence showed by lattice QCD. In the 2 flavor case we have also performed simultaneous fits to the nucleon mass and pion-nucl…
We present new lattice results of the K -> pion semileptonic form factors obtained from simulations with two flavors of dynamical twisted-mass fermions, using pion masses as light as 260 MeV. Our main result is f+(0) = 0.9560 (84), which, combined with the latest experimental data for Kl3 decays, leads to |V_{us}| = 0.2267 (5)_exp (20)_f+(0). Using the PDG(2008) determinations of |Vud| and |Vub| our result implies for the unitarity relation |Vud|**2 + |Vus|**2 + |Vub|**2 = 1.0004 (15). For the O(p**6) term of the chiral expansion of f+(0) we get Df = f+(0) - 1 - f2 = -0.0214 (84).
We investigate the real and imaginary chemical-potential dependence of pion and $ρ$-meson screening masses in both the confinement and the deconfinement region by using two-flavor lattice QCD. The spatial meson correlators are calculated in the imaginary chemical potential region with lattice QCD simulations. We extract pion and $ρ$-meson screening masses from the correlators. The obtained meson screening masses are extrapolated to the real chemical potential region by assuming some analytic function. In the real chemical potential region, the resulting pion and $ρ$-meson screening masses mono…
Domain-wall fermions (DWF) is a lattice discretization for Dirac fields that preserves continuum-like chiral and flavor symmetries that are essential in hadron physics. RIKEN-BNL-Columbia (RBC) and UKQCD Collaborations have been generating sets of realistic 2+1-flavor dynamical lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) numerical ensembles with DWF quarks with strange mass set almost exactly at its physical value via reweighing and degenerate up and down mass set as light as practical. In this report the current status of the nucleon-structure calculations using these ensembles are summarized.
We present a calculation of pion electromagnetic and scalar form factors in two-flavor QCD with the non-perturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson fermion. Chiral extrapolation of the corresponding charge radius is discussed based on the chiral perturbation theory.
We investigate the possible formation of a Bose-Einstein condensed phase of pions in the early Universe at nonvanishing values of lepton flavor asymmetries. A hadron resonance gas model with pion interactions, based on first-principle lattice QCD simulations at nonzero isospin density, is used to evaluate cosmic trajectories at various values of electron, muon, and tau lepton asymmetries that satisfy the available constraints on the total lepton asymmetry. The cosmic trajectory can pass through the pion condensed phase if the combined electron and muon asymmetry is sufficiently large: $|l_e + …
We calculate the scalar form factor of the pion using two dynamical flavors of non-perturbatively $\mathcal{O}(a)$-improved Wilson fermions, including both the connected and the disconnected contribution to the relevant correlation functions. We employ the calculation of all-to-all propagators using stochastic sources and a generalized hopping parameter expansion. From the form factor data at vanishing momentum transfer, $Q^2=0$, and two non-vanishing $Q^2$ we obtain an estimate for the scalar radius $\left<r^2\right>^π_{_{\rm S}}$ of the pion at one value of the lattice spacing and for five d…
We investigate some aspects of 2-flavor QCD with $m_u\not= m_d$ at low-energy, using the leading order chiral perturbation theory including anomaly effects. While nothing special happens at $m_u=0$ for the fixed $m_d\not=0$, the neutral pion mass becomes zero at two critical values of $m_u$, between which the neutral pion field condenses, leading to a spontaneously CP broken phase, the so-called Dashen phase. We also show that the "topological susceptibility" in the ChPT diverges at these two critical points. We briefly discuss a possibility that $m_u=0$ can be defined by the vanishing the "to…
The current status of the LHP and RBC joint calculations of the nucleon isovector form factors and low moments of structure functions with a 2+1-flavor dynamical domain-wall fermion (DWF) lattice-QCD ensemble at the physical pion mass generated by RBC and UKQCD Collaborations with a momentum cutoff of 1.730(4) GeV and lattice spatial extent of 5.476(12) fm is reported. About ten percent of the statistics reported in Lattice 2014 were found with an incorrect boundary condition in time but correcting for it resulted in less than one-percent difference.
We present a status report of our calculation of the electromagnetic form factor of the pion on the PACS-CS gauge field configurations generated using Iwasaki gauge action and Wilson-clover quark action for 2 + 1 flavors of light dynamical quarks. The technique of twiseted boundary conditon is employed to explore the form factor for small momentum transfer. The $q^2$ behavior of the form factor and its light quark mass dependence is examined.
In order to model pions of two-flavor QCD we consider a lattice field theory involving two flavors of staggered quarks interacting strongly with U(1) gauge fields. For massless quarks, this theory has an $SU_L(2)\times SU_R(2) \times U_A(1)$ symmetry. By adding a four-fermion term we can break the U_A(1) symmetry and thus incorporate the physics of the QCD anomaly. We can also tune the pion decay constant F, to be small compared to the lattice cutoff by starting with an extra fictitious dimension, thus allowing us to model low energy pion physics in a setting similar to lattice QCD from first …
Proton decay is one of possible signatures of baryon number violation, which has to exist to explain the baryon asymmetry and the existence of nuclear matter. Proton decays must be mediated through effective low-energy baryon number violating operators made of three quarks and a lepton. We calculate matrix elements of these operators between the proton and various meson final states using the direct method. We report on preliminary results of matrix element calculation done with the 2+1 dynamical flavor domain wall fermions at the physical point for the first time.
We report the status of nucleon structure calculations on the (2+1)-flavor dynamical domain-wall fermions ensembles with pion masses as low as 180 and 250 MeV on a lattice with about 4.6 fm spatial extent. A combination of the Iwasaki+dislocation- suppressing-determinant-ratio (I+DSDR) gauge action and DWF fermion action allows us to generate these ensembles at cutoff of about 1.4 GeV while keeping the residual mass small. Nucleon source Gaussian smearing has been optimized. Preliminary nucleon mass estimates are 0.98 and 1.05 GeV.
The RBC and UKQCD collaborations have been investigating hadron physics in numerical lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) with (2+1) flavors of dynamical domain wall fermions (DWF) quarks that preserves continuum-like chiral and flavor symmetries. The strange quark mass is adjusted to physical value via reweighting and degenerate up and down quark masses are set as light as possible. In a recent study of nucleon structure we found a strong dependence on pion mass and lattice spatial extent in isovector axialvector-current form factors. This is likely the first credible evidence for the pion cl…
We consider the lattice field theory involving two flavors of staggered quarks which interact with $U_A(1)$ gauge fields in the strong coupling limit. For massless quarks, this theory has an $SU_L(2)\times SU_R(2) \times U_A(1)$ symmetry. We show explicitly how pions emerge through the phenomena of confinement in this theory. We also show how one can incorporate the physics of the anomaly in this theory. Thus, our approach is a good pedagogical tool to explain how pions arise in real QCD. Another advantage of our approach is that we can easily design efficient cluster algorithms to compute a v…
We investigate the 2-flavor QCD with non-degenerate quark masses at low-energy, using the chiral perturbation theory including the $η$ meson and anomaly effects. For the fixed $m_d\not=0$, the neutral pion becomes massless at two values of $m_u$, between which a spontaneously CP broken phase appears with the neutral pion condensation. We then show that the topological susceptibility diverges at these two critical points. We also consider the case of $m_u=m_d$ but $θ=π$, equivalently $m_u= - m_d$ with $θ= 0$ by the chiral rotation and show that the CP symmetry is spontaneously broken by the $η$…
We present a combined analysis of SESAM and TxL data for the flavor singlet axial coupling G_A^1 of the proton, which is very helpful to stabilize the disconnected signals at small quark masses. From connected and disconnected contributions we use the tadpole improved renormalization constant Z_A and obtain G_A^1=0.21(12).
At non-zero lattice spacing the flavor symmetry of staggered fermions is broken to a discrete subgroup. We show that in the chiral limit the flavor symmetry of the pion effective Lagrangian enlarges to an SO(4) subgroup of the continuum SU(4) symmetry. This provides an explanation for observed degeneracies in the pion spectrum.
