In this work we study and compare the features of gravitational entropy near the throat of transversable wormholes formed by exotic matter and wormholes in galactic halos. We have verified that gravitational entropy and entropy density of these wormholes in regions near their throats are indistinguishable for objects of same throat, despite the fact they are described by different metrics and by distinct energy-momentum tensors. We have found that the gravitational entropy density diverges near the throat for both cases, probably due to a non-trivial topology at this point, however allowing the interesting interpretation that a maximum flux of information can be carried through the throat of these wormholes. In addition, we have found that both are endowed with an entropic behaviour similar to Hawking-Bekenstein's entropy of non-rotating and null charge black holes.
In this work we construct traversable wormholes geometries in the framework of the complexity factor. We provide the redshift function of a Casimir traversable wormhole which, in combination with a non--vanishing complexity factor, leads to a traversable wormhole with a minimum amount of exotic matter. The shape function and the embedding diagram are shown and discussed. The tidal accelerations and the time required to get through the wormholes are estimated.
Wormholes are tunnels connecting two different points in space-time. In Einstein's General Relativity theory, wormholes are expected to be filled by exotic matter, i.e., matter that does not satisfy the energy conditions and may have negative density. We propose, in this paper, the achievement of wormhole solutions with no need for exotic matter. In order to achieve so, we consider quadratic terms in the trace of the energy-momentum tensor as corrections to the effective energy-momentum tensor of the underlined theory of gravity. We show that by following this formalism, it is possible, indeed…
Recent papers by Fewster and Roman have emphasized that wormholes supported by arbitrarily small amounts of exotic matter will have to be incredibly fine-tuned if they are to be traversable. This paper discusses a wormhole model that strikes a balance between two conflicting requirements, reducing the amount of exotic matter and fine-tuning the metric coefficients, ultimately resulting in an engineering challenge: one requirement can only be met at the expense of the other. The wormhole model is macroscopic and satisfies various traversability criteria.
It was pointed out by Fewster and Roman that some of the wormhole models discussed by Kuhfittig suffer from the failure to distinguish proper from coordinate distances. One of the advantages of "designer wormholes" is that models can be altered. The purpose of this note is to show that by adjusting the metric coefficients, some of these problems can be corrected. By doing so, the basic idea can be retained: wormholes containing only small amounts of exotic matter can still be traversable.
Recent studies have shown that (a) quantum effects may be sufficient to support a wormhole throat and (b) the total amount of "exotic matter" can be made arbitrarily small. Unfortunately, using only small amounts of exotic matter may result in a wormhole that flares out too slowly to be traversable in a reasonable length of time. Combined with the Ford-Roman constraints, the wormhole may also come close to having an event horizon at the throat. This paper examines a model that overcomes these difficulties, while satisfying the usual traversability conditions. This model also confirms that the …
Wormholes are hypothetical tunnels that connect remote parts of spacetime. In General Relativity, wormholes are threaded by exotic matter that violates the energy conditions. In this work, we consider wormholes threaded by nonexotic matter in nonminimal torsion-matter coupling $f(T)$ gravity. We find that the nonminimal torsion-matter coupling can indeed hold the wormhole open. However, from geometric point of view, for the wormhole to have asymptotic flatness, the coupling matter density must falloff rapidly at large radius, otherwise the physical wormhole must be finite due to either change …
Recently, spherically symmetric, static wormholes supported by exotic dust and a radial magnetic field have been derived and argued to be stable with respect to linear radial fluctuations. In this report we point out that these wormholes are unstable due to the formation of shell-crossing singularities when the nonlinearities of the theory are taken into account.
We present a static, spherically symmetric, traversable wormhole solution to multimetric gravity which is sustained by only non-exotic matter, i.e., matter which satisfies all energy conditions. The possibility of this solution arises from the fact that under certain conditions the multimetric gravitational field equations reduce to the Einstein equations, but with a negative effective gravitational constant. We show that the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner mass of this wormhole vanishes, so that it appears massless to observers in the asymptotically flat spacetime. We finally speculate on the feasibili…
Wormholes allowed by the general theory of relativity that are simultaneously traversable by humanoid travelers are subject to severe constraints from quantum field theory, particularly the so-called quantum inequalities, here slightly extended. Moreover, self-collapse of such wormholes can only be prevented by the use of "exotic matter," which, being rather problematical, should be used in only minimal quantities. However, making the layer of exotic matter arbitrarily thin leads to other problems, such as the need for extreme fine-tuning. This paper discusses a class of wormhole geometries th…
We study the possible existence of static traversable wormholes without invoking exotic matter in the framework of the Einstein--Cartan theory. A family of exact static, spherically symmetric wormhole solutions with an arbitrary throat radius, with flat or AdS asymptotic behavior, has been obtained with sources in the form of two noninteracting scalar fields with nonzero potentials. Both scalar fields are canonical (that is, satisfy the weak energy condition), one is minimally and the other nonminimally coupled to gravity, and the latter is a source of torsion.
A quantum inequality bound on the expectation value of the null-contracted stress tensor in an arbitrary Hadamard state is used to obtain constraints on the geometries of traversable wormholes. Particular attention is given to the wormhole models of Visser, Kar, and Dadhich (VKD) and to those of Kuhfittig. These are models which use arbitrarily small amounts of exotic matter for wormhole maintenance. It is shown that macroscopic VKD models are either ruled out or severely constrained, while a recent model of Kuhfittig is shown to be, in fact, non-traversable.
A fundamental property of Morris-Thorne wormholes is the so-called flare-out condition that automatically results in a violation of the null energy condition (NEC) in classical general relativity. By contrast, in $f(R)$ modified gravity, the material threading the wormhole may actually satisfy the NEC, while, at the same time, the effective stress-energy tensor arising from the modified theory violates the NEC, thereby sustaining the wormhole. It is shown in this paper that noncommutative geometry, an offshoot of string theory, can be viewed as a special case of $f(R)$ gravity and can therefor…
In the present paper, the modelling of traversale wormholes, proposed by Morris \& Thorne \cite{morris1}, is performed within the $f(R)$ gravity with particular viable case $f(R)=R-μR_c\Big(\frac{R}{R_c}\Big)^p$, where $μ, R_c>0$ and $0<p<1$. The energy conditions are analyzed using the shape function $b(r)=\frac{r\log(r+1)}{\log(r_0+1)}$ defined by Godani and Samanta \cite{godani} and geometric nature of wormholes is analyzed.
It is well known that phantom energy, which is characterized by the equation of state $p=ωρ$, $ω<-1$, can support Morris-Thorne wormholes since it leads to a violation of the null energy condition. The purpose of this note is to show that the converse is also true in the following sense: for a typical shape function, the equation of state of exotic matter in the vicinity of the throat is given by $p_r=ωρ$, $ω<-1$, where $p_r$ is the radial pressure. Some implications thereof are also considered.
In the present paper, we investigate wormholes in 4D-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity without the requirement of exotic matters. We have taken the radial dependent red-shift function $ϕ=\ln \left( {\frac {r_{0}}{r}}+1 \right)$ and shape function $b(r)={\frac{r_{0}\ln(r+1)}{\ln({r_0}+1)}}$ as well as anisotropic matter sources through equation of state (EoS) $p_r(r) = ωρ(r)$. We examine the energy conditions, flaring out condition, throat condition and anisotropic parameter. The volume integral quantifier is also analyzed to validate the existence and stability of the WH solution. We find, for -ve…
All known solutions to the Einstein equations describing rotating cylindrical wormholes lack asymptotic flatness and therefore cannot describe wormhole entrances as local objects in our Universe. To overcome this difficulty, wormhole solutions are joined to flat asymptotic regions at some surfaces $Σ_-$ and $Σ_+$. The whole configuration thus consists of three regions, the internal one containing a wormhole throat, and two flat external ones, considered in rotating reference frames. Using a special kind of anisotropic fluid respecting the Weak Energy Condition (WEC) as a source of gravity in t…
Dark matter halos are common in galaxies and globular clusters, making it possible to use dark matter density profiles to construct transverse wormholes. In reference [1], an approximate solution of the traversable wormhole satisfying the isotropic pressure condition is constructed by using the dark matter density profile. However, approximate solutions limit the discussion of traversable wormholes to a large extent. In this work, we construct the exact solution of the traversable wormhole in the case of rotation in the dark matter halo. We have written analytical expressions for the Kerr-like…
The embedding of a curved spacetime in a higher-dimensional flat spacetime has continued to be a topic of interest in the general theory of relativity, as exemplified by the induced-matter theory. This paper deals with spacetimes of embedding class one, i.e., spacetimes that can be embedded in a five-dimensional flat spacetime. Einstein's theory allows the fifth dimension to be either spacelike or timelike. By assuming the latter, this paper addresses two fundamental issues concerning Morris-Thorne wormholes, the origin of exotic matter and the frequently inexplicable enormous radial tension a…
In this article, we study the possibility of sustaining a static and spherically symmetric traversable wormhole geometries admitting conformal motion in Einstein gravity, which presents a more systematic approach to search a relation between matter and geometry. In wormhole physics, the presence of exotic matter is a fundamental ingredient and we show that this exotic source can be dark energy type which support the existence of wormhole spacetimes. In this work we model a wormhole supported by dark energy which admits conformal motion. We also discuss the possibility of detection of wormholes…
We show explicitly that traversable wormholes requiring exotic matter in 4-dimensions nevertheless have acceptable stress-tensors obeying reasonable energy conditions in higher dimensions if the wormholes are regarded as being embedded in higher dimensional space-times satisfying Einstein's field equations. From the 4-dimensional perspective, the existence of higher dimensions may thus facilitate wormhole and time-machine constructions through access to "exotic matter".
Abstract This short paper investigates the harmonic behavior of a general-relativistic thin-shell wormhole supported by a particular type of exotic fluid. The exotic fluid obeys a never-studied-before metric-dependent equation of state. This equation of state is tailored such that the wormhole's throat undergoes a harmonic-like behavior before damping to an equilibrium radius. Eventually, the mirror-symmetric Schwarzschild thin-shell wormhole is studied in this framework as an example.
A unified framework for black holes and traversible wormholes is described, where both are locally defined by outer trapping horizons, two-way traversible for wormholes and one-way traversible for black or white holes. In a two-dimensional dilaton gravity model, examples are given of: construction of wormholes from black holes; operation of wormholes for transport, including back-reaction; maintenance of an operating wormhole; and collapse of wormholes to black holes. In spherically symmetric Einstein gravity, several exotic matter models supporting wormhole solutions are proposed: ghost scala…
A recent study by Rahaman et al. has shown that the galactic halo possesses the necessary properties for supporting traversable wormholes, based on two observational results, the density profile due to Navarro et al. and the observed flat rotation curves of galaxies. Using a method for calculating the deflection angle pioneered by V. Bozza, it is shown that the deflection angle diverges at the throat of the wormhole. The resulting photon sphere has a radius of 0.40 ly. Given the dark-matter background, detection may be possible from past data using ordinary light.
Wormholes have been always an interesting object in gravity theories. In this paper we make a little review of the principal properties of these objects and the exotic matter they need to exist. Then, we obtain two specific solutions in the formalism of (2+1)-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant. The obtained geometries correspond to traversable wormholes with an exterior geometry correspondient to the well known BTZ black hole solution. We also discuss the distribution of exotic matter that these wormholes need.
In this work we analyze traversable wormhole solutions in the linear form of $f\left(R,T\right)=R+λT$ gravity satisfying the Null, Weak, Strong, and Dominant Energy Conditions (NEC, WEC, SEC, and DEC respectively) for the entire spacetime. These solutions are obtained via a fully analytical parameter space analysis of the free parameters of the wormhole model, namely the exponents controlling the degree of the redshift and shape functions, the radius of the wormhole throat $r_0$, the value of the redshift function at the throat $ζ_0$, and the coupling parameter $λ$. Bounds on these free parame…
The model of a spiral galaxy with radially directed flows of dark matter is extended by exotic matter, in a form of a perfect fluid with a linear anisotropic equation of state. The exotic matter is collected in the minimum of gravitational potential and opens a wormhole in the center of the galaxy. The flows of dark matter pass through the wormhole and form a mirror galaxy on the other side. The influence of model parameters to the shape of solution is studied, a solution matching parameters of Milky Way galaxy is computed.
We estimate expression for velocity as a function of the radial coordinate $r$ by using polynomial interpolation based on the experimental data of rotational velocities at distant outer regions of galaxies. The interpolation technique has been used to estimate fifth degree polynomial followed by cubic spline interpolation. This rotational velocity is used to find the geometry of galactic halo regions within the framework of Einstein's general relativity. In this letter we have analyzed features of galactic halo regions based on two possible choices for the dark matter density profile, viz. Nav…
In this work, we construct a traversable wormhole by providing a suitable embedding function ensuring the fulfilling of the flaring--out condition. The solution contains free parameters that are reduced through the study of the acceptable conditions of a traversable wormhole. We compute both the quantifier of exotic matter and the quasi--normal modes through the $13^{th}$ order WKB as a function of the remaining free parameters. We obtain that the wormhole geometry can be sustained by a finite amount of exotic matter and seems to be stable under scalar perturbations.
Building on the work of Morris, Thorne, and Yurtsever, some particularly simple examples of traversable wormholes are exhibited. These examples are notable both because the analysis is not limited to spherically symmetric cases, and because it is possible to in some sense minimize the use of exotic matter. In particular, it is possible for a traveller to traverse such a wormhole without passing through a region of exotic matter. As in previous analyses, the weak energy condition is violated in these traversable wormholes.
We classify wormholes endowed with redshift effects and finite mass into three types. Type I wormholes have their radial pressure dying out faster, as one moves away from the throat, than any other component of the stress-energy and thus violate the least the local energy conditions. In type II (resp. III) wormholes the radial and transverse pressures are asymptotically proportional and die out faster (resp. slower) than the energy density. We introduce a novel and generalizable method for deriving, with no cutoff in the stress-energy or gluing, a class of each of the three wormhole types. We …
Recently, Ali and Khalil \cite{Farag Ali}, based on the Bohmian quantum mechanics derived a quantum corrected version of the Schwarzschild metric. In this paper, we construct a quantum corrected Schwarzschild thin shell wormhole (QSTSW) and investigate the stability of this wormhole. First we compute the surface stress at the wormhole throat by applying the Darmois-Israel formalism to the modified Schwarzschild metric and show that exotic matter is required at the throat to keep the wormhole stable. We then study the stability analysis of the wormhole by considering phantom-energy for the exot…
Novel wormholes are obtained in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory for several coupling functions. The wormholes may feature a single-throat or a double-throat geometry and do not demand any exotic matter. The scalar field may asymptotically vanish or be finite, and it may possess radial excitations. The domain of existence is fully mapped out for several forms of the coupling function.
There are two effects of extra matter fields on the Lorentzian traversable wormhole. The ``primary effect'' says that the extra matter can afford to be a part of source or whole source of the wormhole when the wormhole is being formed. Thus the matter does not affect the stability of wormhole and the wormhole is still safe. If the extra matter is extotic, it can be the whole part of the source of the wormhole. The ``auxiliary effect'' is that the extra matter plays the role of the additional matter to the stably-existed wormhole by the other exotic matter. This additional matter will change th…
It is well-known that traversable wormhole solutions to the Einstein equations require the existence of an exotic matter source violating the null energy condition. An apparent exception is the overcharged Kerr-Newman-NUT solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, which has all the properties of a geodesically complete, traversable wormhole spacetime. We show that the exotic matter sourcing this consists in two counter-rotating tensionless straight cosmic strings -- the Misner-Dirac strings -- which, as expected, violate the null energy condition. The wormhole possesses an ergoregion, but no …
Traversable wormholes necessarily require violations of the averaged null energy condition; this being the definition of ``exotic matter''. However, the theorems which guarantee the energy condition violation are remarkably silent when it comes to making quantitative statements regarding the ``total amount'' of energy condition violating matter in the spacetime. We develop a suitable measure for quantifying this notion, and demonstrate the existence of spacetime geometries containing traversable wormholes that are supported by arbitrarily small quantities of ``exotic matter''.
It is well known that it takes matter that violates the averaged weak energy condition to hold the throat of a wormhole open. The production of such ``exotic'' matter is usually discussed within the context of quantum field theory. In this paper I show that it is possible to produce the exotic matter required to hold a wormhole open classically. This is accomplished by coupling a scalar field to matter that satisfies the weak energy condition. The energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field and the matter separately satisfy the weak energy condition, but there exists an interaction energy-momen…
This paper discusses wormholes supported by general equation-of-state , resulting in a significant combination of the linear equation-of-state and some other models. Wormhole with a quadratic equation-of-state is studied as a particular example. It is shown that the violation of null energy condition is restricted to some regions in the vicinity of the throat. The combination of barotropic and polytropic equation-of-state has been studied. We consider fluid near the wormhole throat in an exotic regime which at some $r=r_{1}$, the exotic regime is connected to a distribution of asymptotically d…
We answer an important question in general relativity about the volume integral theorem for exotic matter by suggesting an exact integral quantifier for matter violating Averaged Null Energy Condition (ANEC). It is checked against some well known static, spherically symmetric traversable wormhole solutions of general relativity with a sign reversed kinetic term minimally coupled scalar field. The improved quantifier is consistent with the principle that traversable wormholes can be supported by arbitrarily small quantities of exotic matter.
We show that the RST model describing the exactly soluble black hole model can have a dynamical wormhole solution along with an appropriate boundary condition. The necessary exotic matter which is usually negative energy density is remarkably produced by the quantization of the infalling matter fields. Then the asymptotic geometry in the past is two-dimensional anti-de Sitter(AdS$_2$), which implies the exotic matter is negative. As time goes on, the wormhole eventually evolves into the black hole and its Hawking radiation appears. The throat of the static RST wormhole is lower-bounded but in …
Analytical wormhole solutions in Brans-Dicke theory in the presence of matter are presented. It is shown that the wormhole throat must not be necessarily threaded with exotic matter.
An analytical solution representing traversable asymptotically flat and symmetric wormholes was obtained without adding exotic matter in two different theories independently: in the Einstein-Maxwell-Dirac theory and in the second Randall-Sundrum brane-world model. Further, a smooth normalizable asymmetric wormhole solution has been recently obtained numerically in the Einstein-Maxwell-Dirac theory. Using the time-domain integration method we study quasinormal ringing of all these wormholes with emphasis to the regime of mimicking the near extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes, which is chara…
