This paper discusses wormholes supported by general equation-of-state , resulting in a significant combination of the linear equation-of-state and some other models. Wormhole with a quadratic equation-of-state is studied as a particular example. It is shown that the violation of null energy condition is restricted to some regions in the vicinity of the throat. The combination of barotropic and polytropic equation-of-state has been studied. We consider fluid near the wormhole throat in an exotic regime which at some $r=r_{1}$, the exotic regime is connected to a distribution of asymptotically dark energy regime with $-1<ω<-1/3$. We have presented wormhole solutions with small amount of exotic matter. We have shown that using different forms of equation-of-state has a considerable effect on the minimizing violation of the null energy condition. The effect of many parameters such as redshift as detected by a distant observer and energy density at the throat on the $r_1$ is investigated. The solutions are asymptotically flat and compatible with presently available observational data at the large cosmic scale.
We extend previous proofs that violations of the null energy condition (NEC) are a generic and universal feature of traversable wormholes to completely non-symmetric time-dependent wormholes. We show that the analysis can be phrased purely in terms of local geometry at and near the wormhole throat, and do not have to make any technical assumptions about asymptotic flatness or other global properties. A key aspect of the analysis is the demonstration that time-dependent wormholes have two throats, one for each direction through the wormhole, and that the two throats coalesce only for the case o…
The multidimensional gravity on principal bundle with structural SU(2) gauge group is considered. The Lorentzian wormhole solution disposed between two null surfaces is founded in this case. As the nondiagonal components are similar to a gauge fields (in Kaluza - Klein's sense) then in some sense this solution is dual to the black hole in 4D Einstein - Yang - MIlls gravity: 4D black hole has the stationary area outside of event horizon but multidimensional wormhole inside null surface (on which $ds^2=0$).
Although wormholes can be treated as topological objects in spacetime and from a global point-of-view, a precise definition of what a wormhole throat is and where it can be located can be developed and treated entirely in terms of local geometry. This has the advantage of being free from unnecesary technical assumptions about asymptotic flatness, and other global properties of the spacetime containing the wormhole. We discuss our recent work proving that the violation of the null energy condition (NEC) is a generic feature of all wormholes, whether they be time-dependent or static, and demonst…
The static spherically symmetric traversable wormholes are analysed in the Einstein- Cartan theory of gravitation. In particular, we computed the torsion tensor for matter fields with different spin S = 0; 1/2; 1; 3/2. Interestingly, only for certain values of the spin the torsion contribution to Einstein-Cartan field equation allows one to satisfy both faring-out condition and Null Energy Condition. In this scenario traversable wormholes can be produced by using usual (non-exotic) spinning matter.
The paper deals with an extensive study of null and timelike geodesics in the background of wormhole geometries. Starting with a spherically symmetric spacetime, null geodesics are analyzed for the Morris-Thorne wormhole(WH) and photon spheres are examined in WH geometries. Both bounded and unbounded orbits are discussed for timelike geodesics. A similar analysis has been done for trajectories in a dynamic spherically symmetric WH and for a rotating WH. Finally, the invariant angle method of Rindler and Ishak has been used to calculate the angle between radial and tangential vectors at any poi…
We explore wormhole solutions in a non-minimal torsion-matter coupled gravity by taking an explicit non-minimal coupling between the matter Lagrangian density and an arbitrary function of torsion scalar. This coupling depicts the transfer of energy and momentum between matter and torsion scalar terms. The violation of null energy condition occurred through effective energy-momentum tensor incorporating the torsion-matter non-minimal coupling while normal matter is responsible for supporting the respective wormhole geometries. We consider energy density in the form of non-monotonically decreasi…
The present work investigates the interrelation between the validity (or violation) of the cosmic no-hair conjecture and the existence (or non-existence) of wormholes, both in Einstein's Gravity and in modified gravity theories. It is found that the existence of wormholes implies a violation of the cosmic no-hair conjecture, and the validity of the cosmic no-hair conjecture implies the non-existence of wormholes but not the reverse way both in Einstein's Gravity and in modified gravity theories. We will also re-visit the gravitational entropy predictions of the wormhole and show how they are c…
We consider $f(R, T)$ theory of gravity, in which the gravitational Lagrangian is given by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar and the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, to study static spherically symmetric wormhole geometries sustained by matter sources with isotropic pressure. According to restrictions on the wormhole geometries, we carefully adopt different strategies to construct solutions with the properties and characteristics of wormholes. Using a completely general procedure, we provide several examples of wormholes in which the matter threading the wormhole throat satisfies a…
The `theoretical' existence of traversable Lorentzian wormholes in the classical, macroscopic world is plagued by the violation of the well--known energy conditions of General Relativity. In this brief article we show : (i) how the extent of violation can be quantified using certain volume integrals (ii) whether this `amount of violation' can be minimised for some specific cut--and--paste geometric constructions. Examples and possibilities are also outlined.

We show that the violation of the null energy condition by matter, required by traversable wormholes, can be removed in spacetimes with torsion. In addition, we show that this violation can also be removed in the conformal frame obtained by a Weyl transformation. This comes about because both conformally transformed wormholes and wormholes in spacetimes with torsion become sustained thanks to a combination of 'normal' matter, that satisfies the null energy condition, and an induced 'geometric' energy-momentum tensor that is able to greatly violate the null energy condition.
Traversable wormholes necessarily require violations of the averaged null energy condition; this being the definition of ``exotic matter''. However, the theorems which guarantee the energy condition violation are remarkably silent when it comes to making quantitative statements regarding the ``total amount'' of energy condition violating matter in the spacetime. We develop a suitable measure for quantifying this notion, and demonstrate the existence of spacetime geometries containing traversable wormholes that are supported by arbitrarily small quantities of ``exotic matter''.
We construct a static axisymmetric wormhole from the gravitational field of two Schwarzschild particles which are kept in equilibrium by strings (ropes) extending to infinity. The wormhole is obtained by matching two three-dimensional timelike surfaces surrounding each of the particles and thus spacetime becomes non-simply connected. Although the matching will not be exact in general it is possible to make the error arbitrarily small by assuming that the distance between the particles is much larger than the radius of the wormhole mouths. Whenever the masses of the two wormhole mouths are diff…
It is well-known that traversable wormhole solutions to the Einstein equations require the existence of an exotic matter source violating the null energy condition. An apparent exception is the overcharged Kerr-Newman-NUT solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, which has all the properties of a geodesically complete, traversable wormhole spacetime. We show that the exotic matter sourcing this consists in two counter-rotating tensionless straight cosmic strings -- the Misner-Dirac strings -- which, as expected, violate the null energy condition. The wormhole possesses an ergoregion, but no …
Adapting and extending a suggestion due to Page, we define a wormhole throat to be a marginally anti-trapped surface, that is, a closed two-dimensional spatial hypersurface such that one of the two future-directed null geodesic congruences orthogonal to it is just beginning to diverge. Typically a dynamic wormhole will possess two such throats, corresponding to the two orthogonal null geodesic congruences, and these two throats will not coincide, (though they do coalesce into a single throat in the static limit). The divergence property of the null geodesics at the marginally anti-trapped surf…
Morris \& Thorne \cite{morris1} proposed geometrical objects called traversable wormholes that act as bridges in connecting two spacetimes or two different points of the same spacetime. The geometrical properties of these wormholes depend upon the choice of the shape function. In literature, these are studied in modified gravities for different types of shape functions. In this paper, the traversable wormholes having shape function $b(r)=\frac{r_0\tanh(r)}{\tanh(r_0)}$ are explored in $f(R)$ gravity with $f(R)=R+αR^m-βR^{-n}$, where $α$, $β$, $m$ and $n$ are real constants. For different value…
A regular vacuum solution in 5D gravity on the principal bundle with the U(1) structural group is proposed as a 4D wormhole. This solution has two null hypersurfaces where an interchange of the sign of some 5D metric components happens. For a 4D observer living on the base of this principal bundle this is a wormhole with two asymptotically flat Lorentzian (Euclidean) spacetimes connected by a Euclidean (Lorentzian) throat. The 4D Lorentzian observer sees these two null hypersurfaces as electric charges.
It was argued in literature that traversable wormholes can exist with arbitrarily small violation of null energy conditions. We show that if the amount of exotic material near the wormhole throat tends to zero, either this leads to a horn instead of a wormhole or the throat approaches the horizon in such a way that infnitely large stresses develop on the throat.
We consider a topologically nontrivial thin-shell wormhole with a throat in the form of a $T^2$ torus. It is shown that: (i)~such a wormhole is stable with respect to excitations of the throat; (ii)~not all energy conditions are violated for such wormholes; (iii)~if any of the energy conditions is violated, this violation occurs only partially in some region near the throat, and in other regions the violation is absent. Also, we discuss the differences between spherical $S^2$ wormholes and toroidal $T^2$ wormholes under investigation.
This paper investigates the geometry of static traversable wormhole through Noether symmetry approach in $f(R)$ gravity. We take perfect fluid distribution and formulate symmetry generators with associated conserved quantities corresponding to general form, power-law and exponential $f(R)$ models. In each case, we evaluate wormhole solutions using constant and variable red-shift functions. We analyze the behavior of shape function, viability of constructed $f(R)$ model and stability of wormhole solutions graphically. The physical existence of wormhole solutions can be examined through null/wea…
We examine the quantum null energy condition (QNEC) for a $2+1$-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) at strong coupling in the background of a wormhole spacetime by employing the AdS/CFT correspondence. First, we numerically construct a novel $3+1$-dimensional vacuum AdS black hole solution with non-trivial topology, which is dual to a wormhole geometry connecting two flat universes. Although the bulk null energy condition (NEC) is not violated, the NEC for the holographic stress-energy tensor is violated near the wormhole throat. Next, we investigate the entanglement entropy for a half-sp…
Within 2+1-dimensional cosmological new massive gravity, we consider thin-shell and thin-shell wormhole construction. For this, we introduce first, the junction conditions apt for the fourth order terms in the action of the theory. Then, by employing some specific static solutions in new massive gravity, we study the characteristics of associated thin-shells and thin-shell wormholes. Our finding suggests that, firstly, there cannot exist any thin-shells regarding our chosen solutions of cosmological new massive gravity, and secondly, the constructed thin-shell wormhole does not need to be symm…
This study aims to investigate the viability of a viable logarithmic f(R) gravity for inflation in giving wormhole solutions. We consider a static and spherically symmetric spacetime and two different shape functions. We found that the model provides traversable wormhole solutions shown by its violation to energy conditions. Violation to null energy condition indicates the existence of traversable wormhole and the existence of exotic matter. The equation of state parameter is less than -1 which shows the presence of phantom fluid. Furthermore, the stability of wormhole is analyzed using Tolman…
We present a new definition of the wormhole throat including the flare-out condition and the traversability for general dynamical spacetimes in terms of null geodesic congruences. We will examine our definition for some examples and see advantages compared to the others.
I prove that general relativity admits no asymptotically well-behaved static spherically symmetric traversable wormholes supported by classical scalar fields and nonexotic matter. The theorem holds for all values of the scalar field curvature coupling parameter $ξ$, even though fields with $ξ>0$ are capable of violating the average null energy condition. Good asymptotic behaviour (the effective Newton's constant being positive and finite at both ends of the wormhole) can only be achieved by introducing additional exotic matter, which must itself violate the null energy condition over some regi…
The paper deals with static traversable wormhole having shape function a polynomial of the radial coordinate of degree 2. Embedding of the wormholes in space-time is examined both analytically and graphically. Also both timelike and null geodesics are studied in this wormhole geometry.
Wormhole solutions to the equations of general relativity have some spectacular local and global properties. As these unusual features are not explicitly forbidden by known physics, wormholes are considered in various astrophysical and cosmological scenarios. The paradigmatic traversable wormhole models are described by static spherically-symmetric Ellis--Morris--Thorne and Simpson--Visser metrics. We show that no dynamical solution of the semiclassical Einstein equations can have these metrics as their static limit. On the other hand, possible static limits of the dynamical solutions are not …
The aim of this paper is to construct regular Hayward thin-shell wormholes and analyze their stability. We adopt Israel formalism to calculate surface stresses of the shell and check the null and weak energy conditions for the constructed wormholes. It is found that the stress-energy tensor components violate the null and weak energy conditions leading to the presence of exotic matter at the throat. We analyze the attractive and repulsive characteristics of wormholes corresponding to $a^r>0$ and $a^r<0$, respectively. We also explore stability conditions for the existence of traversable thin-s…
We propose wormholes solutions by assuming space dependent equation of state parameter. Our models show that the existence of wormholes is supported by arbitrary small quantities of averaged null energy condition (ANEC) violating phantom energy characterized by variable equation state parameter.
It was shown by Ford and Roman in 1996 that quantum field theory severely constrains wormhole geometries on a macroscopic scale. The first part of this paper discusses a wide class of wormhole solutions that meet these constraints. The type of shape function used is essentially generic. The constraints are then discussed in conjunction with various redshift functions. Violations of the weak energy condition and traversability criteria are also considered. The second part of the paper analyzes analogous time-dependent (dynamic) wormholes with the aid of differential forms. It is shown that a vi…
This paper generalizes the static and spherically symmetric traversable wormhole geometry to a rotating axially symmetric one with a time-dependent angular velocity by means of an exact solution. It was found that the violation of the weak energy condition, although unavoidable, is considerably less severe than in the static spherically symmetric case. The radial tidal constraint is more easily met due to the rotation. Similar improvements are seen in one of the lateral tidal constraints. The magnitude of the angular velocity may have little effect on the weak energy condition violation for an…
Recently, exact solutions of wormhole geometries supported by a nonminimal curvature-matter coupling were found, where the nonminimal coupling minimizes the violation of the null energy condition of normal matter at the throat. In this brief report, we present a solution where normal matter satisfies the energy conditions at the throat and it is the higher order curvature derivatives of the nonminimal coupling that is responsible for the null energy condition violation, and consequently for supporting the respective wormhole geometries. For simplicity, we consider a linear R nonmiminal curvatu…
A new framework is proposed for general dynamic wormholes, unifying them with black holes. Both are generically defined locally by outer trapping horizons, temporal for wormholes and spatial or null for black and white holes. Thus wormhole horizons are two-way traversible, while black-hole and white-hole horizons are only one-way traversible. It follows from the Einstein equation that the null energy condition is violated everywhere on a generic wormhole horizon. It is suggested that quantum inequalities constraining negative energy break down at such horizons. Wormhole dynamics can be develop…
Following the recent theory of $f(Q)$ gravity, we continue to investigate the possible existence of wormhole geometries, where $Q$ is the non-metricity scalar. Recently, the non-metricity scalar and the corresponding field equations have been studied for some spherically symmetric configurations in [ Phys. Lett. B 821, 136612 (2021) and Phys. Rev. D 103, 124001 (2021) ]. One can note that field equations are different in these two studies. Following [Phys. Rev. D 103, 124001 (2021)], we systematically study the field equations for wormhole solutions and found the violation of null energy condi…
Firstly, we review the pointwise and averaged energy conditions, the quantum inequality and the notion of the ``volume integral quantifier'', which provides a measure of the ``total amount'' of energy condition violating matter. Secondly, we present a specific metric of a spherically symmetric traversable wormhole in the presence of a generic cosmological constant, verifying that the null and the averaged null energy conditions are violated, as was to be expected. Thirdly, a pressureless dust shell is constructed around the interior wormhole spacetime by matching the latter geometry to a uniqu…
We have examined the possible construction of a stationary, spherically symmetric and spatially inhomogeneous wormhole spacetime supported by the phantom energy. The later is supposed to be represented by the modified Chaplygin gas equation of state. The solutions so obtained satisfy the flare out and the asymptotic flatness conditions. It is also shown that the averaged null energy condition has to be violated for the existence of the wormhole.
The general form of a stationary, axially symmetric traversable wormhole is discussed. This provides an explicit class of rotating wormholes that generalize the static, spherically symmetric ones first considered by Morris and Thorne. In agreement with general analyses, it is verified that such a wormhole generically violates the null energy condition at the throat. However, for suitable model wormholes, there can be classes of geodesics falling through it which do not encounter any energy-condition-violating matter. The possible presence of an ergoregion surrounding the throat is also noted.
The conditions of the traversable wormhole joining with the exterior space-time are considered in details and the mixed boundary problem for the Einstein equations is formulated. It is shown that, in opposite to some declarations, the conditions of the wormhole joining with the exterior space-time have non-dynamical nature and can not be defined by the physical processes. The role of these conditions in the formation of the causal structure of space-time is analyzed. It is shown that the causal structure of the wormhole-type space-time models is independent from both the interior and exterior …
In this work, we consider the possibility of expanding wormholes in higher-dimensions, which is an important ingredient of modern theories of fundamental physics. An important motivation is that non-trivial topological objects such as microscopic wormholes may have been enlarged to macroscopic sizes in an expanding inflationary cosmological background. Since the Ricci scalar is only a function of time in standard cosmological models, we use this property as a simplifying assumption. More specifically, we consider a particular class of wormhole solutions corresponding to the choice of a spatial…
We show that the presence of a nonminimal interaction between dark matter and dark energy may lead to a violation of the null energy condition and to the formation of a configuration with nontrivial topology (a wormhole). In this it is assumed that both dark matter and dark energy satisfy the null energy condition, a violation of which takes place only in the inner high-density regions of the configuration. This is achieved by assuming that, in a high-density environment, a nonminimal coupling function changes its sign in comparison with the case where dark matter and dark energy have relative…
We calculate renormalised vacuum expectation values of electromagnetic stress-energy tensor in the static spherically-symmetrical wormhole topology. We find that for metric tensor sufficiently slow varied with distance violation of the averaged weak energy condition takes place irrespectively of the detailed form of metric. This is a necessary condition for the electromagnetic vacuum to be able to support the wormhole geometry.

In this paper, we derive some new exact solutions of static wormholes in f(T) gravity. We discuss independent cases of the pressure components including isotropic and anisotropic pressure. Lastly we consider radial pressure satisfying a barotropic equation of state. We also check the behavior of null energy condition (NEC) for each case and observe that it is violated for the anisotropic case, while it is satisfied for isotropic and barotropic cases.
The existing solutions to the Einstein equations describing rotating cylindrical wormholes are not asymptotically flat and therefore cannot describe wormhole entrances as local objects in our Universe. To overcome this difficulty, flat asymptotic regions are added to wormhole solutions by matching them at some surfaces $Σ_-$ and $Σ_+$. It is shown, however, that if the wormhole solution is obtained for scalar fields with arbitrary potentials, possibly interacting with an azimuthal electric or magnetic field, then the matter content of one or both thin shells appearing on $Σ_-$ and $Σ_+$ violat…
In this paper we study traversable wormholes in the context of $f(R)$ gravity. Exact solutions of traversable wormholes are found by imposing the nonconstant Ricci scalar. These solutions asymptotically match spherical, flat and hyperbolic FRW metric. By choosing some static $f(R)$ gravity models, we verify the standard energy conditions for the asymptotically spherical, flat and hyperbolic wormhole solutions. Unlike the Einstein gravity, we find that in the context of $f(R)$ modified gravity, the asymptotically spherical, flat and hyperbolic wormhole solutions can respect the null energy cond…
Renormalized vacuum expectation values of electromagnetic stress-energy tensor are calculated in the background spherically-symmetrical metric of the wormhole's topology. Covariant geodesic point separation method of regularization is used. Violation of the weak energy condition at the throat of wormhole takes place for geometry sufficiently close to that of infinitely long wormhole of constant radius irrespectively of the detailed form of metric. This is an argument in favour of possibility of existence of selfconsistent wormhole in empty space maintained by vacuum field fluctuations in the w…
