High-spin rotational bands in rare-earth Er ($Z=68$), Tm ($Z=69$) and Yb ($Z=70$) isotopes are investigated by three different nuclear models. These are (i) the cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) approach with approximate particle number projection by means of the Lipkin-Nogami (LN) method, (ii) the cranking covariant density functional theory (CDFT) with pairing correlations treated by a shell-model-like approach (SLAP) or the so called particle-number conserving (PNC) method, and (iii) cranked shell model (CSM) based on the Nilsson potential with pairing correlations treated by the PNC method. A detailed comparison between these three models in the description of the ground state rotational bands of even-even Er and Yb isotopes is performed. The similarities and differences between these models in the description of the moments of inertia, the features of band crossings, equilibrium deformations and pairing energies of even-even nuclei under study are discussed. These quantities are considered as a function of rotational frequency and proton and neutron numbers. The changes in the properties of the first band crossings with increasing neutron number in this mass region are investigated. On average, a comparable accuracy of the description of available experimental data is achieved in these models. However, the differences between model predictions become larger above the first band crossings. Because of time-consuming nature of numerical calculations in the CDFT-based models, a systematic study of the rotational properties of both ground state and excited state bands in odd-mass Tm nuclei is carried out only by the PNC-SCM. With few exceptions, the rotational properties of experimental 1-quasiparticle and 3-quasiparticle bands in $^{165,167,169,171}$Tm are reproduced reasonably well.
The shell-model-like approach (SLAP) based on cranking covariant density functional theory (CDFT) with a separable pairing force is developed. The developed cranking CDFT-SLAP with separable pairing force is applied to investigate the rotational spectra in $^{60}$Fe, including the positive-parity yrast band and two negative-parity signature partner bands, in comparison with the cranking CDFT-SLAP with monopole pairing force calculations. Excellent agreement with the available data is achieved.
We investigate the RPA normal-mode coordinates in the pairing-plus-quadrupole model, with an eye on simplifying the application of large amplitude collective motion techniques. At the Hartree-Bogoliubov minimum, the RPA modes are exactly the cranking operators of the collective coordinate approach. We examine the possibility of representing the self-consistent cranking operator by linear combinations of a limited number of one-body operators. We study the Sm nuclei as an example, and find that such representations exist in terms of operators that are state-dependent in a characteristic manner.
A separable form of the Gogny pairing force is implemented in tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory for the description of rotational bands in open shell nuclei. The developed method is used to investigate the yrast sequence of 109Ag for an example. The experimental energy spectrum, angular momenta, and electromagnetic transition probabilities are well reproduced by taking into account pairing correlations with the separable pairing force. An abrupt transition of the rotational axis from the long-intermediate plane to the long-short one is obtained and discussed in detail.
The response of isovector and isoscalar pairing to generalized rotation in isospace is studied. Analytical expressions for non-selfconsistent solutions for different limiting cases of the model are derived. In particular, the connections between gauge relations among pairing gaps and the position of the isocranking axis are investigated in $N$=$Z$ nuclei. The two domains of collective and non-collective rotation in space are generalized to isospace. The amplitudes for pair-transfer of T=0 and T=1 pairs are also calculated. It is shown that the structure of the T=0 state in odd-odd nuclei preve…
A formalism for semi-adiabatic cranking mass parameters is presented. For the fission process of 234U, the time-dependent pairing equations of motion were used to calculate the excitation energy and to extract values of the cranking inertia. A fission barrier is determined by minimizing the action trajectory in a five dimensional configuration space spanned by elongation, necking, deformations of fragments and mass-asymmetry. The deformation energy is computed in the the frame of the microscopic-macroscopic model. The two center shell model with Woods-Saxon potentials is used in this context. …
Excitation spectra of T=0,1,2 states in even-even (e-e) and odd-odd (o-o) N=Z nuclei are analyzed within a mean-field based model involving isovector and isoscalar pairing interactions and the iso-cranking formalism applied to restore approximately isospin symmetry. It is shown that T=0 states in o-o and T=1 states in e-e nuclei correspond to two-quasiparticle, time-reversal symmetry breaking excitations since their angular momenta are different than zero. On the other hand the lowest T=2 states in e-e and T=1 states in o-o nuclei, which both are similar in structure to their even-even isobari…
We report on the first Skyrme-Hartree-Fock calculations with the tilted-axis cranking in the context of magnetic rotation. The mean field symmetries, differences between phenomenological and self-consistent methods and the generation of shears-like structures in the mean field are discussed. Significant role of the time-odd spin-spin effective interaction is pointed out. We reproduce the shears mechanism, but quantitative agreement with experiment is rather poor. It may have to do with too large core polarization, lack of pairing correlations or properties of the Skyrme force.
The wave function of a spheroidal harmonic oscillator without spin-orbit interaction is expressed in terms of associated Laguerre and Hermite polynomials. The pairing gap and Fermi energy are found by solving the BCS system of two equations. Analytical relationships for the matrix elements of inertia are obtained function of the main quantum numbers and potential derivative. They may be used to test complex computer codes one should develop in a realistic approach of the fission dynamics. The results given for the $^{240}$Pu nucleus are compared with a hydrodynamical model. The importance of t…
The shell-model-like approach is implemented to treat the cranking many-body Hamiltonian based on the covariant density functional theory including pairing correlations with exact particle number conservation. The self-consistency is achieved by iterating the single-particle occupation probabilities back to the densities and currents. As an example, the rotational structures observed in the neutron-rich nucleus $^{60}$Fe are investigated and analyzed. Without introducing any \emph{ad hoc} parameters, the bandheads, the rotational spectra, and the relations between the angular momentum and rota…
\item[Background] For cranked mean-field calculations with arbitrarily oriented rotational frequency vector $\boldsymbolω$ in the intrinsic frame, one has to employ constraints on average values of the quadrupole-moment tensor, so as to keep the nucleus in the principal-axis reference frame. Kerman and Onishi [Nucl. Phys. A {\bf 361}, 179 (1981)] have shown that the Lagrangian multipliers that correspond to the required constraints are proportional to $\boldsymbolω \times \boldsymbol{J}$, where $\boldsymbol{J}$ is the average angular momentum vector. \item[Purpose] We study the validity and co…
The observed shears bands in 198Pb and 199Pb are investigated within the framework of tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory, and the separable pairing force is adopted to consider the pairing correlations. The energy spectra, total angular momenta, and transition probabilities agree well with the experimental data. The bandhead energy differences are reproduced satisfactorily without any ad hoc renormalizations when the pairing correlations are taken into account. The angular momentum vectors are discussed in detail to analyze the pairing effects on magnetic rotations.
Using the idea of the instanton approach to quantum tunneling we try to obtain a method of calculating spontaneous fission rates for nuclei with the odd number of neutrons or protons. This problem has its origin in the failure of the adiabatic cranking approximation which serves as the basis in calculations of fission probabilities. Selfconsistent instanton equations, with and without pairing, are reviewed and then simplified to non-selfconsistent versions with phenomenological single-particle potential and seniority pairing interaction. Solutions of instanton-like equations without pairing an…
Pair correlations are described in the framework of the HFB approximation applied to a uniformly rotating system (Cranking model). The reduction of the moments of inertia, the classification of rotational bands as multi quasiparticle configurations, and the signatures of the rotation induced transition to the unpaired state are discussed.
For the first time, the tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory with pairing correlations has been formulated and implemented in a fully self-consistent and microscopic way to investigate the evolution of the spin axis and the pairing effects in rotating triaxial nuclei. The measured energy spectrum and transition probabilities for the Nd-135 yrast band are reproduced well without any ad hoc renormalization factors when pairing effects are taken into account. A transition from collective to chiral rotation has been demonstrated. It is found that pairing correlations introduce …
The generalized Bohr Hamiltonian was used to describe the low-lying collective excitations in even-even isotopes of Ru, Pd, Te, Ba and Nd. The Strutinsky collective potential and cranking inertial functions were obtained using the Nilsson potential. The effect of coupling with the pairing vibrations is taken into account approximately when determining the inertial functions. The calculation does not contain any free parameter.
We study the predictive power of Skyrme forces with respect to low lying quadrupole spectra along the chains of Sn, Cd, and Te isotopes. Excitation energies and B(E2) values for the lowest quadrupole states are computed from a collective Schroedinger equation which as deduced through collective path generated by constraint Skyrme-Hartree-Fock (SHF) plus self-consistent cranking for the dynamical response. We compare the results from four different Skyrme forces, all treated with two different pairing forces (volume versus density-dependent pairing). The region around the neutron shell closure …
To describe quantal collective phenomena, it is useful to requantize the time-dependent mean-field dynamics. We study the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (TDHFB) theory for the two-level pairing Hamiltonian, and compare results of different quantization methods. The one constructing microscopic wave functions, using the TDHFB trajectories fulfilling the Einstein-Brillouin-Keller quantization condition, turns out to be the most accurate. The method is based on the stationary-phase approximation to the path integral. We also examine the performance of the collective model which assumes th…
The generalized Bohr Hamiltonian is applied to a description of low-lying collective excitations in even-even isotopes of Te, Xe, Ba, Ce, Nd and Sm. The collective potential and inertial functions are determined by means of the Strutinsky method and the cranking model, respectively. A shell-dependent parametrization of the Nilsson potential is used. An approximate particle-number projection is performed in treatment of pairing correlations. The effect of coupling with the pairing vibrations is taken into account approximately when determining the inertial functions. The calculation does not co…
Studies of fission dynamics, based on nuclear energy density functionals, have shown that the coupling between shape and pairing degrees of freedom has a pronounced effect on the nonperturbative collective inertia and, therefore, on dynamic (least-action) spontaneous fission paths and half-lives. Collective potentials and nonperturbative cranking collective inertia tensors are calculated using the multidimensionally-constrained relativistic mean-field (MDC-RMF) model. Pairing correlations are treated in the BCS approximation using a separable pairing force of finite range. Pairing fluctuations…
Well-known examples of shears bands in the nuclei 198Pb and 199Pb are investigated within tilted axis cranking relativistic mean-field theory. Energy spectra, the relation between spin and rotational frequency, deformation parameters and reduced $M1$ and $E2$ transition probabilities are calculated. The results are in good agreement with available data and with calculations based on the phenomenological pairing plus-quadrupole-quadrupole tilted-axis cranking model. It is shown that covariant density functional theory provides a successful microscopic and fully self-consistent description of ma…
Collective inertia is strongly influenced at the level crossing at which quantum system changes diabatically its microscopic configuration. Pairing correlations tend to make the large-amplitude nuclear collective motion more adiabatic by reducing the effect of those configuration changes. Competition between pairing and level crossing is thus expected to have a profound impact on spontaneous fission lifetimes. To elucidate the role of nucleonic pairing on spontaneous fission, we study the dynamic fission trajectories of $^{264}$Fm and $^{240}$Pu using the state-of-the-art self-consistent frame…

Superdeformed states in light $N=Z$ nuclei are studied by means of the self-consistent cranking calculation (i.e., the P + QQ model based on the cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method). Analyses are given for two typical cases of superdeformed bands in the $A \simeq 40$ mass region, that is, bands where backbending is absent ($^{40}$Ca) and present ($^{36}$Ar). Investigations are carried out, particularly for the following points: cross-shell excitations in the sd and pf shells; the role of the g$_{9/2}$ and d$_{5/2}$ orbitals; the effect of the nuclear pairing; and the interplay between triax…
Excitation energies of the $T$=1 states in even-even as well as $T$=0 and $T$=1 states in odd-odd $N$=$Z$ nuclei are calculated within the mean-field approach. It is shown that the underlying structure of these states can be determined in a consistent manner only when both isoscalar and isovector pairing collectivity as well as isospin projection, treated within the iso-cranking approximation, are taken into account. In particular, in odd-odd $N$=$Z$ nuclei, the interplay between quasiparticle excitations (relevant for the case of $T$=0 states) and iso-rotations (relevant for the case of $T$=1…
A comparative study is performed of a deformed mean field theory, represented by the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) model, and the spherical shell model. Energy spectra, occupation numbers, B(E2)-values, and spectroscopic quadrupole moments in the light pf shell nuclei are calculated in the two models and compared. The result is also compared to available experimental data which are generally well described by the shell model. Although the Nilsson-Strutinsky calculation does not include pairing, both the subshell occupation numbers and quadrupole properties are found to be rather similar in …
We apply the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate (ASCC) method to the multi-O(4) model and study collective mass (inertia function) of the many-body tunneling motion. Comparing results with those of the exact diagonalization, we show that the ASCC method succeeds in describing gradual change of excitation spectra from an anharmonic vibration about the spherical shape to a doublet pattern associated with a deformed double-well potential possessing the oblate-prolate symmetry. The collective mass is significantly increased by the quadrupole-pairing contribution to time-odd components…
Structure of eight superdeformed bands in the nucleus 151Tb is analyzed using the results of the Hartree-Fock and Woods-Saxon cranking approaches. It is demonstrated that far going similarities between the two approaches exist and predictions related to the structure of rotational bands calculated within the two models are nearly parallel. An interpretation scenario for the structure of the superdeformed bands is presented and predictions related to the exit spins are made. Small but systematic discrepancies between experiment and theory, analyzed in terms of the dynamical moments, J(2), are s…
Band structure properties of $^{182}$Os are investigated through a particle number and angular momentum constrained generator coordinate(GCM) calculation based on self-consistent three-dimensional cranking solutions. From the analysis of the wave function of the lowest GCM solution, we confirm that this nucleus shows a tilted rotational motion in its yrast states, at least with the present set of force parameters of the pairing-plus-quadrupole interaction Hamiltonian. A close examination of behavior of other GCM solutions reveals a sign of a possible occurrence of multi-band crossing in the nu…
By applying particle-number projection to the static-path approximation (SPA), the heat capacity and the breakdown of pairing correlations are investigated in the thermally excited, superfluid systems 172Yb, 94Mo, and 56Fe. For the heavy nucleus 172Yb, the heat capacities in both the SPA and the number-projected SPA (NPSPA) exhibit an S shape; the difference between the SPA and NPSPA heat-capacity curves is not very large and the particle-number projection thereby enhances the S shape already seen in the SPA. The temperature at which the S-shape of heat capacity curve occurs parallels the temp…
We present an overview of beyond mean field theories (BMFT) based on the generator coordinate method (GCM) and the recovery of symmetries used in nuclear physics with effective forces. After a reminder of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory a discussion of the shortcomings of any mean field approximation (MFA) is presented. The recovery of the symmetries spontaneously broken in the HFB approach, in particular the angular momentum, is necessary, among others, to describe excited states and transitions. Particle number projection is needed to guarantee the right number of protons and neutro…
Currently, one application of the mean-field methods in nuclear physics is the investigation of exotic nuclear symmetries. This is related, in particular, to the study of nuclear rotation about an axis tilted with respect to the principal axes of the mass distribution in the Tilted-Axis Cranking (TAC) model. The present work presents one of the first TAC calculations performed within fully self-consistent methods. The Hartree-Fock method with the Skyrme effective two-body interaction has been used. A computer code has been developed that allows for the breaking of all spatial symmetries of the…
The properties of inhomogeneous neutron matter are crucial to the physics of neutron-rich nuclei and the crust of neutron stars. Advances in computational techniques now allow us to accurately determine the binding energies and densities of many neutrons interacting via realistic microscopic interactions and confined in external fields. We perform calculations for different external fields and across several shells to place important constraints on inhomogeneous neutron matter, and hence the large isospin limit of the nuclear energy density functionals that are used to predict properties of he…
