The exchange of off-resonant propagating photons between distant quantum emitters induces coherent interactions among them. The range of such interactions, and whether they are accompanied by dissipation, depends on the photonic energy dispersion, its dimensionality, and/or the light-matter couplings. In this manuscript, we characterize the limits of photon-mediated interactions for the case of generic one-dimensional photonic baths under the typical assumptions, that are, having finite range hoppings for the photonic bath plus local and rotating-wave light-matter couplings. In that case, we show how, irrespective of the system's parameter, the coherent photon-mediated interactions can always be written as a finite sum of exponentials, and thus can not display a power-law asymptotic scaling. As an outlook, we show how by relaxing some of these conditions, e.g., going beyond local light-matter couplings (e.g., giant atoms) or with longer-range photon hopping models, power-law interactions can be obtained within certain distance windows, or even in the asymptotic regime for the latter case.
Maxwell's Demon is at the heart of the interrelation between quantum information processing and thermodynamics. In this thought experiment, a demon generates a temperature gradient between two thermal baths initially at equilibrium by gaining information at the single-particle level and applying classical feed-forward operations, allowing for the extraction of work. Here we implement a photonic version of Maxwell's Demon with active feed-forward in a fibre-based system using ultrafast optical switches. We experimentally show that, if correlations exist between the two thermal baths, the Demon …
Quantum simulation involves engineering devices to implement different Hamiltonians and measuring their quantized spectra to study quantum many-body systems. Recent developments in topological photonics have shown the possibility of studying novel quantum phenomena by controlling the topological properties of such devices. Here, using coupled arrays of upto 16 high Q nano-cavities we experimentally realize quantum photonic baths which are analogs of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We investigate the effect of fabrication induced disorder on these baths by probing individual super-modes and dem…
Photon-mediated interactions between quantum emitters in engineered photonic baths is an emerging area of quantum optics. At the same time, non-Hermitian (NH) physics is currently thriving, spurred by the exciting possibility to access new physics in systems ruled by non-trivial NH Hamiltonians - in particular photonic lattices - which can challenge longstanding tenets such as the Bloch theory of bands. Here, we combine these two fields and study the exotic interaction between emitters mediated by the photonic modes of a lossy photonic lattice described by a NH Hamiltonian. We show in a paradi…
Multitime system correlations functions are relevant in various areas of physics and science, dealing with system-bath interaction including spectroscopy and quantum optics, where many of these schemes include an off-diagonal system bath interaction. Here we extend the enhanced TEMPO algorithm for quantum path integrals using tensor networks [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 240602 (2019)] to open quantum systems with off-diagonal coupling beyond a single two level system. We exemplify the approach on a coupled cavity waveguide system with spatially separated quantum two-state emitters, though many other…
We show unusual cooperative two-photon resonance between two-modes of field inside a photonic crystal cavity. The two-photon resonance occurs when two off resonant quantum dots emit one photon in each cavity mode and de-excite simultaneously. In the presence of phonon coupling the conditions for two-photon resonance change significantly. Using such two-photon two-mode interaction we propose to generate entangled state of two qutrits. The basis of a qutrit are formed by the state of the cavity mode containing $0$, $1$ and $2$ photons. We also discuss effect of phonon coupling on negativity of t…

Topological phases of light exhibit unique properties beyond the realm of conventional photonics. In particular the valley-Hall topological insulator has been realized in a variety of photonic structures because it can be easily induced by breaking certain lattice symmetries. However, the valley-Chern numbers are usually fixed by design and the corresponding topological edge states are forced to propagate in a fixed direction. Here, we propose a mechanism to induce topological transitions via accidental Dirac points in metasurfaces composed of interacting dipole emitters/antennas. For a fixed …

We study the dynamics of a quantum emitter coupled to a two-dimensional photonic crystal featuring a finite bandwidth with sharp edges and a Van-Hove singularity. We study the effect of strong system-bath coupling and non-Markovianity of the photonic environment using a nonperturbative approach based on the recently introduced NCA dynamical map for open quantum systems. We show that several characteristic features of the dynamics near a photonic band-edge such as the freezing of spontaneous emission and the maximum light-matter entanglement, get strongly modified in presence of counter-rotatin…
The generalized amplitude damping (GAD) quantum channel implements the interaction between a qubit and an environment with arbitrary temperature and arbitrary interaction time. Here, we implement a photonic version of the GAD for the case of infinite interaction time (full thermalization). We also show that this quantum channel works as a thermal bath with controlled temperature.
We identify a class of dressed atom-photon states formingat the same energy of the atom at any coupling strength. As a hallmark, their photonic component is an eigenstate of the bare photonic bath with a vacancy in place of the atom. The picture accommodates waveguide-QED phenomena where atoms behave as perfect mirrors, connecting in particular dressed bound states (BS) in the continuum or BIC with geometrically-confined photonic modes. When applied to photonic lattices, the framework provides a general criterion to predict dressed BS in lattices with topological properties by putting them in …
Superradiance, characterized by the collective, coherent emission of light from an excited ensemble of emitters, generates photonic signals on timescales faster than the natural lifetime of an individual atom. The rapid exchange of coherence between atomic emitters and photonic fields in the superradiant regime enables a fast, broadband quantum memory. We demonstrate this superradiance memory mechanism in an ensemble of cold rubidium atoms and verify that this protocol is suitable for pulses on timescales shorter than the atoms' natural lifetime. Our simulations show that the superradiance mem…
