Two non--interacting quantum systems which couple to a common environment with many degrees of freedom initially in thermal equilibrium can become entangled due to the indirect interaction mediated through this heat bath. I examine here the dynamics of reservoir induced entanglement for a heat bath consisting of a thermal electro--magnetic radiation field, such as black body radiation or the cosmic microwave background, and show how the effect can be understood as result of an effective induced interaction.
Analysis of the spontaneously induced correlation on atom-radiation entanglement in an ensemble of two-level atoms initially prepared in the upper level and placed in a cavity containing a squeezed radiation employing the method of evaluating the coherent-state propagator is presented. It is found that the cavity radiation exhibits squeezing which is directly attributed to the squeezed radiation in the cavity. The intensity of the cavity radiation increases with the squeeze parameter and interaction time. It is also shown that substantial degree of entanglement between the atomic states and ra…
Can entanglement and the quantum behavior in physical systems survive at arbitrary high temperatures? In this Letter we show that this is the case for a electromagnetic field mode in an optical cavity with a movable mirror in a thermal state. We also identify two different dynamical regimes of generation of entanglement separated by a critical coupling strength.
We show that the radiation pressure of an intense optical field impinging on a perfectly reflecting vibrating mirror is able to entangle in a robust way the first two optical sideband modes. Under appropriate conditions, the generated entangled state is of EPR type [A. Einstein, {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. {\bf 47}, 777 (1935)].
Applying a magnetic field gradient to a trapped ion allows long-wavelength microwave radiation to produce a mechanical force on the ion's motion when internal transitions are driven. We demonstrate such a coupling using a single trapped \Yb{171}~ion, and use it to produce entanglement between the spin and motional state, an essential step towards using such a field gradient to implement multi-qubit operations.
Non-equilibrium quantum dynamics represents an emerging paradigm for condensed matter physics, quantum information science, and statistical mechanics. Strongly interacting Rydberg atoms offer an attractive platform to study driven-dissipative dynamics of quantum spin models with long-range order. Here, we explore the conditions under which stationary many-body entanglement persists with near-unit fidelity and high scalability. In our approach, coherent many-body dynamics is driven by Rydberg-mediated laser transitions, while atoms at the lattice boundary reduce the entropy of the many-body sta…
We show how to detect entanglement with criteria built from simple two-body correlation terms. Since many natural Hamiltonians are sums of such correlation terms, our ideas can be used to detect entanglement by energy measurement. Our criteria can straightforwardly be applied for detecting different forms of multipartite entanglement in familiar spin models in thermal equilibrium.
With an easily applicable criterion based on permutation symmetries of (identically prepared) replicas of quantum states we identify distinct entanglement classes in high-dimensional multi- partite systems. The different symmetry properties of inequivalent states provide a rather intuitive picture of the otherwise very abstract classification of many-body entangled states.
We study an isolated, perfectly reflecting, mirror illuminated by an intense laser pulse. We show that the resulting radiation pressure efficiently entangles a mirror vibrational mode with the two reflected optical sideband modes of the incident carrier beam. The entanglement of the resulting three-mode state is studied in detail and it is shown to be robust against the mirror mode temperature. We then show how this continuous variable entanglement can be profitably used to teleport an unknown quantum state of an optical mode onto the vibrational mode of the mirror.
We show a general approach for detecting genuine multipartite entanglement (GME) and partial inseparability in many-body-systems by means of macroscopic observables (such as the energy) only. We show that the obtained criteria, the "GME gap" and "the k-entanglement gap", detect large areas of genuine multipartite entanglement and partial entanglement in typical many body states, which are not detected by other criteria. As genuine multipartite entanglement is a necessary property for several quantum information theoretic applications such as e.g. secret sharing or certain kinds of quantum comp…
We quantify multiparticle quantum entanglement in a system of N two-level atoms interacting with a squeezed vacuum state of the electromagnetic field. We calculate the amount of quantum entanglement present among one hundred such two-level atoms and also show the variation of that entanglement with the radiation field parameter. We show the continuous variation of the amount of quantum entanglement as we continuously increase the number of atoms from N=2 to N=100. We also discuss that the multiparticle correlations among the N two-level atoms are made up of all possible bipartite correlations …
We study the time evolution of the amount of entanglement generated by one dimensional spin-1/2 Ising-type Hamiltonians composed of many-body interactions. We investigate sets of states randomly selected during the time evolution generated by several types of time-independent Hamiltonians by analyzing the distributions of the amount of entanglement of the sets. We compare such entanglement distributions with that of typical entanglement, entanglement of a set of states randomly selected from a Hilbert space with respect to the unitarily invariant measure. We show that the entanglement distribu…
Using the quantum two-body system as a familiar model, this talk will describe how entanglement can be used to select preferred observables for interrogating a physical system. The symmetries and dynamics of the quantum two-body system provide a backdrop for testing the relativity of entanglement with respect to observable-induced tensor product structures. We believe this exploration leads us to a general statement: the physically-meaningful observable subalgebras are the ones that minimize entanglement in typical states.
We employ a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum information processor to simulate the ground state of an XXZ spin chain and measure its NMR analog of entanglement, or pseudo-entanglement. The observed pseudo-entanglement for a small-size system already displays singularity, a signature which is qualitatively similar to that in the thermodynamical limit across quantum phase transitions, including an infinite-order critical point. The experimental results illustrate a successful approach to investigate quantum correlations in many-body systems using quantum simulators.
We address a fundamental issue in quantum mechanics and quantum information theory, the generation of an entangled pair of qubits that interact solely through a third, semiclassical degree of freedom, in the framework of cavity quantum electrodynamics. We show that finite, though not maximal, entanglement is obtainable in the classical limit, at the price of a diverging effective interaction time. The optimal atomic entanglement derives from a trade-off between the atomic entanglement in a sub-wave packet and the purity of the atomic state. Decoherence by photon loss sets an upper limit on the…
Nonlinear processes of light scattering on a two-level system near resonance are considered. The problem is reduced to the emission and absorption of an entangled system, formed by a strong resonant field and a two-level system, having a non-factorizing wave function.
A simple one dimensional model is introduced describing a two particle "atom" approaching a point at which the interaction between the particles is lost. The wave function is obtained analytically and analyzed to display the entangled nature of the subsequent state.
In this work, we study the coupling between a superconducting device as a dc SQUID, simulated from an artificial atom with two degrees of freedom, and a single-mode radiation field for the information transference process. We demonstrate that the population transfer among the energy levels of the artificial atom yields an entanglement dynamics, which leads to the generation of a pair of photons. Moreover, we show the quantum information transference between the internal modes of the superconducting device, initially in a maximally entangled state, and the radiation field. The artificial atom a…
This paper investigates the physical effects of Yang-Baxter equation (YBE) to quantum entanglements through the 3-body S-matrix in entangling parameter space. The explicit form of 3-body S-matrix $\breve{R}_{123}(θ,φ)$ based on the 2-body S-matrices is given due to the factorization condition of YBE. The corresponding chain Hamiltonian has been obtained and diagonalized, also the Berry phase for 3-body system is given. It turns out that by choosing different spectral parameters the $\breve{R}(θ,φ)$-matrix gives GHZ and W state respectively. The extended 1-D Kitaev toy model has been derived. E…
Multipartite entanglement plays an essential role in both quantum information science and many-body physics. Due to the exponentially large dimension and complex geometric structure of the state space, the detection of entanglement in many-body systems is extremely challenging in reality. Conventional means, like entanglement witness and entropy criterion, either highly depend on the prior knowledge of the studied systems or the detection capability is relatively weak. In this work, we propose a framework for designing multipartite entanglement criteria based on permutation moments, which have…
What correlations are present in the ground state of a many-body Hamiltonian? We study the relationship between ground-state correlations, especially entanglement, and the energy gap between the ground and first excited states. We prove several general inequalities which show quantitatively that ground-state correlations between systems not directly coupled by the Hamiltonian necessarily imply a small energy gap.
Entangled pairs of microwave photons are commonly produced in the narrow frequency band of a resonator, which represents a modified vacuum density of states. We use a broadband, semi-infinite transmission line terminated by a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). A weak pump signal modulates the SQUID inductance, resulting in a single time-varying boundary condition. We detect both quadratures of the microwave radiation emitted at two different frequencies separated by 0.7~GHz. We determine the type and purity of entanglement from the noise correlations and an in-situ noise and …
We introduce a general bipartite-like representation and Schmidt decomposition of an arbitrary pure state of $N$ indistinguishable fermions, based on states of $M<N$ and $(N-M)$ fermions. It is directly connected with the reduced $M$- and $(N-M)$-body density matrices (DMs), which have the same spectrum in such states. The concept of $M$-body entanglement emerges naturally in this scenario, generalizing that of one-body entanglement. Rigorous majorization relations satisfied by the normalized $M$-body DM are then derived, which imply that the associated entropy will not increase, on average, u…
In this work, we report that the Hawking radiation effect on fermions is fundamentally different from the case of scalar particles. Intrinsic properties of fermions (exclusion principle and spin) affect strongly the interaction of fermions with both Hawking radiation and metric of the spacetime. In particular we have found the following: first, while the fermion vacuum state seen by the Rindler observer is an entangled state in which the right and left Rindler wedge states appear in correlated pairs as in the case of the scalar particles, the entanglement disappears in the excited state due to…
We develop a novel approach aimed at solving the equations of motion of open quantum many-body systems. It is based on a combination of generalized wave function trajectories and matrix product states. We introduce an adaptive quantum stochastic propagator, which minimizes the expected entanglement in the many-body quantum state, thus minimizing the computational cost of the matrix product state representation of each trajectory. We illustrate this approach on the example of a one-dimensional open Brownian circuit. We show that this model displays an entanglement phase transition between area …
We establish a set of resource conversion relationships between quantum coherence and multipartite entanglement in many-body systems, where the operational measures of resource cost and distillation are focused. Under the multipartite incoherent operation, the initial coherence of single-party system bounds the maximal amounts of corresponding operational entanglement in an arbitrary bipartite partition as well as the genuine multipartite entanglement in many-body systems. Furthermore, the converted multipartite entanglement can be transferred to its subsystems and restored to coherence of a s…
We show that one-body entanglement, which is a measure of the deviation of a pure fermionic state from a Slater determinant (SD) and is determined by the mixedness of the single-particle density matrix (SPDM), can be considered as a quantum resource. The associated theory has SDs and their convex hull as free states, and number conserving fermion linear optics operations (FLO), which include one-body unitary transformations and measurements of the occupancy of single-particle modes, as the basic free operations. We first provide a bipartitelike formulation of one-body entanglement, based on a …
We show that the entropy of entanglement is sensitive to the coherent quantum phase transition between normal and super-radiant regions of a system of a finite number of three-level atoms interacting in a dipolar approximation with a one-mode electromagnetic field. The atoms are treated as semi-distinguishable using different cooperation numbers and representations of SU(3), variables which are relevant to the sensitivity of the entropy with the transition. The results are computed for all three possible configurations (Ξ, Λ and V ) of the three-level atoms.
We study the harmonic entanglement and squeezing in a two-mode radiation produced in a degenerate parametric down conversion process coupled to a two-mode vacuum reservoir employing the linearization procedure. It is found that there is a quadrature entanglement between the harmonically related fundamental and second-harmonic modes and the superimposed radiation exhibits a significant two-mode squeezing. The entanglement exits even when there is no two-mode squeezing, since the correlation leading to these phenomena are essentially different. In addition, the more the external coherent light i…
We construct optimal time-local control pulses based on a multipartite entanglement measure as target functional. The underlying control Hamiltonians are derived in a purely algebraic fashion, and the resulting pulses drive a composite quantum system rapidly into that highly entangled state which can be created most efficiently for a given interaction mechanism, and which bears entanglement that is robust against decoherence. Moreover, it is shown that the control scheme is insensitive to experimental imperfections in first order.

The evolution of a many-particle system on a one-dimensional lattice, subjected to a quantum walk can cause spatial entanglement in the lattice position, which can be exploited for quantum information/communication purposes. We demonstrate the evolution of spatial entanglement and its dependence on the quantum coin operation parameters, the number of particles present in the lattice and the number of steps of quantum walk on the system. Thus, spatial entanglement can be controlled and optimized using a many-particle discrete-time quantum walk.
The relation is studied between the entanglement production and collective radiation by an ensemble of atoms. Entanglement production is quantified by means of a general measure introduced earlier by the author. Primary emphasis is placed on the entanglement generated by pseudospin density matrices. The problem of collective atomic radiation can be described by the pseudospin evolution equations. These equations define the evolutional entanglement generated by the related density matrices. Under conditions of superradiant emission, the entanglement production exhibits sharp peaks at the delay …
The preparation of highly entangled many-body systems is one of the central challenges of both basic and applied science. The complexity of interparticle interaction and environment coupling increases rapidly with the number of to-be-entangled subsystems, rendering the requirements on the control of many-body quantum systems ever more restrictive. We propose an approach that allows to derive optimal control Hamiltonians in a purely algebraic fashion. These drive a composite quantum system rapidly into that highly entangled state which can be created most efficiently for a given interaction mec…
We investigate the correlations between different bipartitions of an exactly solvable one-dimensional many-body Moshinsky model consisting of Nn "nuclei" and Ne "electrons". We study the dependence of entanglement on the inter-particle interaction strength, on the number of particles, and on the particle masses. Consistent with kinematic intuition, the entanglement between two subsystems vanishes when the subsystems have very different masses, while it attains its maximal value for subsystems of comparable mass. We show how this entanglement feature can be inferred by means of the Born-Oppenhe…
We show that simulated relativistic motion can generate entanglement between artificial atoms and protect them from spontaneous emission. We consider a pair of superconducting qubits coupled to a resonator mode, where the modulation of the coupling strength can mimic the harmonic motion of the qubits at relativistic speeds, generating acceleration radiation. We find the optimal feasible conditions for generating a stationary entangled state between the qubits when they are initially prepared in their ground state. Furthermore, we analyze the effects of motion on the probability of spontaneous …
We construct an entanglement witness for many-qubit systems, based on symmetric two-body correlations with two measurement settings. This witness is able to detect the entanglement of some Dicke states for any number of particles, and such detection exhibits some robustness against white noise and thermal noise under the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick Hamiltonian. In addition, it detects the entanglement of spin-squeezed states, with a detection strength that approaches the maximal value for sufficiently large numbers of particles. As spin-squeezed states can be experimentally generated, the properties …
We propose a method to entangle two distant vibrating microsize mirrors (i.e., mechanical oscillators) in a cavity optomechanical system. In this scheme, we discuss both the resonant and large-detuning conditions, and show that the entanglement of two mechanical oscillators can be achieved with the assistance of a two-level atom and cavity-radiation pressure. In the resonant case, the operation time is relatively short, which is desirable to minimize the effects of decoherence. While in the large-detuning case, the cavity is only virtually excited during the interaction. Therefore, the decay o…
We propose a scheme of optical pumping by which a system of atoms coupled to harmonic oscillators is driven to an entangled steady state through the atomic spontaneous emission. It is shown that the optical pumping can be tailored so that the many-body atomic state asymptotically reaches an arbitrary stabilizer state regardless of the initial state. The proposed scheme can be suited to various physical systems. In particular, the ion-trap realization is well within current technology.
A pure state decoheres into a mixed state as it entangles with an environment. When an entangled two-mode system is embedded in a thermal environment, however, each mode may not be entangled with its environment by their simple linear interaction. We consider an exactly solvable model to study the dynamics of a total system, which is composed of an entangled two-mode system and a thermal environment, and also an array of infinite beam splitters. It is shown that many-body entanglement of the system and the environment plays a crucial role in the process of disentangling the system.
We investigate the effects of parity-deformed radiation fields on the dynamics of entanglement transfer to distant noninteracting atom qubits. These qubits are embedded in two separated lossy cavities connected by a leaky fiber, which acts as a cavity buffer with delocalized modes. The process is studied within a single-excitation subspace, the parity-deformed cavity photons allowing the introduction of static local classical fields which function as a control. The mechanism of state transfer is analyzed in comparison to the uncontrolled case. We find that the transfer evolution exhibits an as…
The black-body radiation is reinterpreted in terms of the photon's many-body wave functions in analogy with the condensed matter physics. This interpretation has implications on the wave-particle duality, and on the difference between the photon and the matter wave.
We consider the coherent state radiation field inside a micromaser cavity and study the entanglement mediated by it on a pair of two level atoms passing though the cavity one after the other. We then investigate the effects of squeezing of the cavity field on the atomic entanglement. We compute the entanglement of formation for the emerging mixed two-atom state and show that squeezing of the cavity radiation field can increase the atomic entanglement.
The resonance fluorescence from regular atomic systems is shown to represent a continuous source of non-Gaussian entangled radiation propagating in two different directions. For a single atom entanglement occurs under the same conditions as squeezing. For more atoms, the entanglement can be more robust against dephasing than squeezing, hence providing a useful continuous source for various applications of entangled radiation.
The existence of correlations between the parts of a quantum system on the one hand, and entanglement between them on the other, are different properties. Yet, one intuitively would identify strong $N$-party correlations with $N$-party entanglement in an $N$-partite quantum state. If the local systems are qubits, this intuition is confirmed: The state with the strongest $N$-party correlations is the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state, which does have genuine multipartite entanglement. However, for high-dimensional local systems the state with strongest $N$-party correlations may be a tens…
Entanglement is the resource to overcome the natural limitations of spatially separated parties restricted to Local Operations assisted by Classical Communications (LOCC). Recently two new classes of operational entanglement measures, the source and the accessible entanglement, for arbitrary multipartite states have been introduced. Whereas the source entanglement measures from how many states the state of interest can be obtained via LOCC, the accessible entanglement measures how many states can be reached via LOCC from the state at hand. We consider here pure bipartite as well as multipartit…
We investigate the possibility to obtain higly multipartite-entangled states as nondegenerate eigenstates of Hamiltonians that involve only short-range and few-body interactions. We study small-size systems (with a number of qubits ranging from three to five) and search for Hamiltonians with a Maximally Multipartite Entangled State (MMES) as a nondegenerate eigenstate. We then find conditions, including bounds on the number of coupled qubits, to build a Hamiltonian with a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state as a nondegenerate eigenstate. We finally comment on possible applications.
We show that two, non interacting, infinitely long spin chains can become globally entangled at the mesoscopic level of their fluctuation operators through a purely noisy microscopic mechanism induced by the presence of a common heat bath. By focusing on a suitable class of mesoscopic observables, the behaviour of the dissipatively generated quantum correlations between the two chains is studied as a function of the dissipation strength and bath temperature.
We consider the dynamics of a vibrating and rotating end-mirror of an optical Fabry-P{érot} cavity that can sustain Laguerre-Gaussian modes. We demonstrate theoretically that since the intra-cavity field carries linear as well as angular momentum, radiation pressure can create bipartite entanglement between a vibrational and a rotational mode of the mirror. Further we show that the ratio of vibrational and rotational couplings with the radiation field can easily be adjusted experimentally, which makes the generation and detection of entanglement robust to uncertainties in the cavity manufactur…
Studying the physics of quantum correlations has gained new interest after it has become possible to measure entanglement entropies of few body systems in experiments with ultracold atomic gases. Apart from investigating trapped atom systems, research on correlation effects in other artificially fabricated few-body systems, such as quantum dots or electromagnetically trapped ions, is currently underway or in planning. Generally, the systems studied in these experiments may be considered as composed of a small number of interacting elements with controllable and highly tunable parameters, effec…
Current understanding of correlations and quantum phase transitions in many-body systems has significantly improved thanks to the recent intensive studies of their entanglement properties. In contrast, much less is known about the role of quantum non-locality in these systems. On the one hand, standard, "theorist- and experimentalist-friendly" many-body observables involve correlations among only few (one, two, rarely three...) particles. On the other hand, most of the available multipartite Bell inequalities involve correlations among many particles. Such correlations are notoriously hard to …
We investigate entanglement of the Hawking radiation in a dispersive model with subluminal dispersion. In this model, feature of the Hawking radiation is represented by three mode Bogoliubov transformation connecting the in-vacuum state and the out-state. We obtain the exact form of the tripartite in-vacuum state which encodes structure of multipartite entanglement. Bogoliubov coefficients are computed by numerical calculation of the wave equation with subluminal dispersion and it is found that genuine tripartite entanglement persists in whole frequency range up to the cutoff arisen from the s…
The Minkowski vacuum state is expressed as an entangled state between the left and right Rindler wedges when it is constructed on the Rindler vacuum. In this paper, we further examine the entanglement structure and extend the expression to the future (expanding) and past (shrinking) Kasner spacetimes. This clarifies the origin of the quantum radiation produced by an Unruh--DeWitt detector in uniformly accelerated motion in the four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. We also investigate the two-dimensional massless case where the quantum radiation vanishes but the same entanglement structure exis…
The simple entanglement of N-body N-particle pure states is extended to the more general M-body or M-body N-particle states where $N\neq M$. Some new features of the M-body N-particle pure states are discussed. An application of the measure to quantify quantum correlations in a Bose-Einstien condensate model is demonstrated.
Short review on entanglement, as seen from a quantum information perspective, and some simple applications to many-body quantum systems. Special emphasis in area laws, cold atoms, and efficient descriptions using tensor network states.
We show how coherences between identical constituents of a many-body quantum state can be interrogated by suitable correlation functions, and identify sufficient conditions under which low-order correlators fully characterize many-body coherences, as controlled by the constituents' mutual distinguishability. Comparison of correlators of different order detects many-body entanglement.
