The Deep Learning Track is a new track for TREC 2019, with the goal of studying ad hoc ranking in a large data regime. It is the first track with large human-labeled training sets, introducing two sets corresponding to two tasks, each with rigorous TREC-style blind evaluation and reusable test sets. The document retrieval task has a corpus of 3.2 million documents with 367 thousand training queries, for which we generate a reusable test set of 43 queries. The passage retrieval task has a corpus of 8.8 million passages with 503 thousand training queries, for which we generate a reusable test set of 43 queries. This year 15 groups submitted a total of 75 runs, using various combinations of deep learning, transfer learning and traditional IR ranking methods. Deep learning runs significantly outperformed traditional IR runs. Possible explanations for this result are that we introduced large training data and we included deep models trained on such data in our judging pools, whereas some past studies did not have such training data or pooling.

This is the second year of the TREC Deep Learning Track, with the goal of studying ad hoc ranking in the large training data regime. We again have a document retrieval task and a passage retrieval task, each with hundreds of thousands of human-labeled training queries. We evaluate using single-shot TREC-style evaluation, to give us a picture of which ranking methods work best when large data is available, with much more comprehensive relevance labeling on the small number of test queries. This year we have further evidence that rankers with BERT-style pretraining outperform other rankers in th…

The Podcast Track is new at the Text Retrieval Conference (TREC) in 2020. The podcast track was designed to encourage research into podcasts in the information retrieval and NLP research communities. The track consisted of two shared tasks: segment retrieval and summarization, both based on a dataset of over 100,000 podcast episodes (metadata, audio, and automatic transcripts) which was released concurrently with the track. The track generated considerable interest, attracted hundreds of new registrations to TREC and fifteen teams, mostly disjoint between search and summarization, made final s…
This report discusses three submissions based on the Duet architecture to the Deep Learning track at TREC 2019. For the document retrieval task, we adapt the Duet model to ingest a "multiple field" view of documents---we refer to the new architecture as Duet with Multiple Fields (DuetMF). A second submission combines the DuetMF model with other neural and traditional relevance estimators in a learning-to-rank framework and achieves improved performance over the DuetMF baseline. For the passage retrieval task, we submit a single run based on an ensemble of eight Duet models.

This paper describes Brown University's submission to the TREC 2019 Deep Learning track. We followed a 2-phase method for producing a ranking of passages for a given input query: In the the first phase, the user's query is expanded by appending 3 queries generated by a transformer model which was trained to rephrase an input query into semantically similar queries. The expanded query can exhibit greater similarity in surface form and vocabulary overlap with the passages of interest and can therefore serve as enriched input to any downstream information retrieval method. In the second phase, we…

The state-of-the-art solutions to the vocabulary mismatch in information retrieval (IR) mainly aim at leveraging either the relational semantics provided by external resources or the distributional semantics, recently investigated by deep neural approaches. Guided by the intuition that the relational semantics might improve the effectiveness of deep neural approaches, we propose the Deep Semantic Resource Inference Model (DSRIM) that relies on: 1) a representation of raw-data that models the relational semantics of text by jointly considering objects and relations expressed in a knowledge reso…
We present an overview of the TREC-COVID Challenge, an information retrieval (IR) shared task to evaluate search on scientific literature related to COVID-19. The goals of TREC-COVID include the construction of a pandemic search test collection and the evaluation of IR methods for COVID-19. The challenge was conducted over five rounds from April to July, 2020, with participation from 92 unique teams and 556 individual submissions. A total of 50 topics (sets of related queries) were used in the evaluation, starting at 30 topics for Round 1 and adding 5 new topics per round to target emerging to…

The goal of the TREC Fair Ranking track was to develop a benchmark for evaluating retrieval systems in terms of fairness to different content providers in addition to classic notions of relevance. As part of the benchmark, we defined standardized fairness metrics with evaluation protocols and released a dataset for the fair ranking problem. The 2019 task focused on reranking academic paper abstracts given a query. The objective was to fairly represent relevant authors from several groups that were unknown at the system submission time. Thus, the track emphasized the development of systems whic…

This paper provides an overview of the NIST TREC 2020 Fair Ranking track. For 2020, we again adopted an academic search task, where we have a corpus of academic article abstracts and queries submitted to a production academic search engine. The central goal of the Fair Ranking track is to provide fair exposure to different groups of authors (a group fairness framing). We recognize that there may be multiple group definitions (e.g. based on demographics, stature, topic) and hoped for the systems to be robust to these. We expected participants to develop systems that optimize for fairness and re…

The TREC Deep Learning (DL) Track studies ad hoc search in the large data regime, meaning that a large set of human-labeled training data is available. Results so far indicate that the best models with large data may be deep neural networks. This paper supports the reuse of the TREC DL test collections in three ways. First we describe the data sets in detail, documenting clearly and in one place some details that are otherwise scattered in track guidelines, overview papers and in our associated MS MARCO leaderboard pages. We intend this description to make it easy for newcomers to use the TREC…
We describe our participation in all five rounds of the TREC 2020 COVID Track (TREC-COVID). The goal of TREC-COVID is to contribute to the response to the COVID-19 pandemic by identifying answers to many pressing questions and building infrastructure to improve search systems [8]. All five rounds of this Track challenged participants to perform a classic ad-hoc search task on the new data collection CORD-19. Our solution addressed this challenge by applying the Continuous Active Learning model (CAL) and its variations. Our results showed us to be amongst the top scoring manual runs and we rema…

This paper describes the submissions of the Natural Language Processing (NLP) team from the Australian Research Council Industrial Transformation Training Centre (ITTC) for Cognitive Computing in Medical Technologies to the TREC 2021 Clinical Trials Track. The task focuses on the problem of matching eligible clinical trials to topics constituting a summary of a patient's admission notes. We explore different ways of representing trials and topics using NLP techniques, and then use a common retrieval model to generate the ranked list of relevant trials for each topic. The results from all our s…
This contribution summarizes the participation of the UNIMIB team to the TREC 2021 Clinical Trials Track. We have investigated the effect of different query representations combined with several retrieval models on the retrieval performance. First, we have implemented a neural re-ranking approach to study the effectiveness of dense text representations. Additionally, we have investigated the effectiveness of a novel decision-theoretic model for relevance estimation. Finally, both of the above relevance models have been compared with standard retrieval approaches. In particular, we combined a k…

We benchmark Conformer-Kernel models under the strict blind evaluation setting of the TREC 2020 Deep Learning track. In particular, we study the impact of incorporating: (i) Explicit term matching to complement matching based on learned representations (i.e., the "Duet principle"), (ii) query term independence (i.e., the "QTI assumption") to scale the model to the full retrieval setting, and (iii) the ORCAS click data as an additional document description field. We find evidence which supports that all three aforementioned strategies can lead to improved retrieval quality.
The TREC 2017 Common Core Track aimed at gathering a diverse set of participating runs and building a new test collection using advanced pooling methods. In this paper, we describe the participation of the IlpsUvA team at the TREC 2017 Common Core Track. We submitted runs created using two methods to the track: (1) BOIR uses Bayesian optimization to automatically optimize retrieval model hyperparameters. (2) NVSM is a latent vector space model where representations of documents and query terms are learned from scratch in an unsupervised manner. We find that BOIR is able to optimize hyperparame…

Health misinformation on search engines is a significant problem that could negatively affect individuals or public health. To mitigate the problem, TREC organizes a health misinformation track. This paper presents our submissions to this track. We use a BM25 and a domain-specific semantic search engine for retrieving initial documents. Later, we examine a health news schema for quality assessment and apply it to re-rank documents. We merge the scores from the different components by using reciprocal rank fusion. Finally, we discuss the results and conclude with future works.

The TREC Fair Ranking Track aims to provide a platform for participants to develop and evaluate novel retrieval algorithms that can provide a fair exposure to a mixture of demographics or attributes, such as ethnicity, that are represented by relevant documents in response to a search query. For example, particular demographics or attributes can be represented by the documents topical content or authors. The 2022 Fair Ranking Track adopted a resource allocation task. The task focused on supporting Wikipedia editors who are looking to improve the encyclopedia's coverage of topics under the purv…
InfoSeeking Lab's FATE (Fairness Accountability Transparency Ethics) group at University of Washington participated in 2020 TREC Fairness Ranking Track. This report describes that track, assigned data and tasks, our group definitions, and our results. Our approach to bringing fairness in retrieval and re-ranking tasks with Semantic Scholar data was to extract various dimensions of author identity. These dimensions included gender and location. We developed modules for these extractions in a way that allowed us to plug them in for either of the tasks as needed. After trying different combinatio…

In this paper, we describe our participation in the TREC Health Misinformation Track 2020. We submitted $11$ runs to the Total Recall Task and 13 runs to the Ad Hoc task. Our approach consists of 3 steps: (1) we create an initial run with BM25 and RM3; (2) we estimate credibility and misinformation scores for the documents in the initial run; (3) we merge the relevance, credibility and misinformation scores to re-rank documents in the initial run. To estimate credibility scores, we implement a classifier which exploits features based on the content and the popularity of a document. To compute …
This paper reports on an effort of reproducing the organizers' baseline as well as the top performing participant submission at the 2021 edition of the TREC Conversational Assistance track. TREC systems are commonly regarded as reference points for effectiveness comparison. Yet, the papers accompanying them have less strict requirements than peer-reviewed publications, which can make reproducibility challenging. Our results indicate that key practical information is indeed missing. While the results can be reproduced within a 19% relative margin with respect to the main evaluation measure, the…
The TREC Real-Time Summarization (RTS) track provides a framework for evaluating systems monitoring the Twitter stream and pushing tweets to users according to given profiles. It includes metrics, files, settings and hypothesis provided by the organizers. In this work, we perform a thorough analysis of each component of the framework used in 2016 and 2017 and found some limitations for the Scenario A of this track. Our main findings point out the weakness of the metrics and give clear recommendations to fairly reuse the collection.
We explore how to generate effective queries based on search tasks. Our approach has three main steps: 1) identify search tasks based on research goals, 2) manually classify search queries according to those tasks, and 3) compare three methods to improve search rankings based on the task context. The most promising approach is based on expanding the user's query terms using task terms, which slightly improved the NDCG@20 scores over a BM25 baseline. Further improvements might be gained if we can identify more specific search tasks.

We examine the effects of different latency penalties in the evaluation of push notification systems, as operationalized in the TREC 2015 Microblog track evaluation. The purpose of this study is to inform the design of metrics for the TREC 2016 Real-Time Summarization track, which is largely modeled after the TREC 2015 evaluation design.
A vital step towards the widespread adoption of neural retrieval models is their resource efficiency throughout the training, indexing and query workflows. The neural IR community made great advancements in training effective dual-encoder dense retrieval (DR) models recently. A dense text retrieval model uses a single vector representation per query and passage to score a match, which enables low-latency first stage retrieval with a nearest neighbor search. Increasingly common, training approaches require enormous compute power, as they either conduct negative passage sampling out of a continu…

Daily progress notes are common types in the electronic health record (EHR) where healthcare providers document the patient's daily progress and treatment plans. The EHR is designed to document all the care provided to patients, but it also enables note bloat with extraneous information that distracts from the diagnoses and treatment plans. Applications of natural language processing (NLP) in the EHR is a growing field with the majority of methods in information extraction. Few tasks use NLP methods for downstream diagnostic decision support. We introduced the 2022 National NLP Clinical Challe…
The usage of neural network models puts multiple objectives in conflict with each other: Ideally we would like to create a neural model that is effective, efficient, and interpretable at the same time. However, in most instances we have to choose which property is most important to us. We used the opportunity of the TREC 2019 Deep Learning track to evaluate the effectiveness of a balanced neural re-ranking approach. We submitted results of the TK (Transformer-Kernel) model: a neural re-ranking model for ad-hoc search using an efficient contextualization mechanism. TK employs a very small numbe…
Retrieving paragraphs to populate a Wikipedia article is a challenging task. The new TREC Complex Answer Retrieval (TREC CAR) track introduces a comprehensive dataset that targets this retrieval scenario. We present early results from a variety of approaches -- from standard information retrieval methods (e.g., tf-idf) to complex systems that using query expansion using knowledge bases and deep neural networks. The goal is to offer future participants of this track an overview of some promising approaches to tackle this problem.

Users of Web search engines reveal their information needs through queries and clicks, making click logs a useful asset for information retrieval. However, click logs have not been publicly released for academic use, because they can be too revealing of personally or commercially sensitive information. This paper describes a click data release related to the TREC Deep Learning Track document corpus. After aggregation and filtering, including a k-anonymity requirement, we find 1.4 million of the TREC DL URLs have 18 million connections to 10 million distinct queries. Our dataset of these querie…
