Increasing the sensitivity of chiral spectroscopic techniques such as circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is a current aspiration in the research field of nanophotonics. Enhancing CD spectroscopy depends upon of two complementary requirements: the enhancement of the electromagnetic fields perceived by the molecules under study and the conservation of the helicity of those fields, guaranteed by duality symmetry. In this work, we introduce a systematic method to design nanostructured dual periodic photonic systems capable of enhancing molecular CD spectroscopy resonantly. As an illustration, we engineer a dual 1D silicon nanoparticle array and show that its collective optical modes can be efficiently employed to resonantly enhance by two orders of magnitude the local density of optical chirality and, thus, the CD signal obtained from a given molecular sample on its vicinity.
We present a rigorous finite element method to calculate circular dichroism (CD) in various systems consisting of nanostructures and oriented chiral molecules with electric quadrupole transitions. The interaction between oriented molecule materials, which are regarded as anisotropic chiral media, and metallic nanostructures has been investigated. Our results show that the plasmon-induced CD is sensitive to the orientations of the molecules. In many cases, the contribution of molecular electric quadrupole transitions to the total CD signal can play a key role. More interesting, we have demonstr…
Large optical chirality in the vicinity of achiral high index dielectric nanostructures has been recently demonstrated as useful means of enhancing molecular circular dichroism. We theoretically study the spatial dependence of optical chirality enhancement in the vicinity of high index dielectric nanodisks and highlight its importance for the design of nanophotonic platforms for circular dichroism enhancement. Using a T-matrix framework, we demonstrate that depending on disk aspect ratio chirality is enhanced preferentially along different directions. We employ various statistical procedures (…
The circular dichroism (ICD) induced from interaction of chiral molecules with achiral plasmonic metal nanostructures has improved sensitivity of molecular chirality detection. Although experimental results have presented several orders magnitude of ICD enhancement, but the cause of ICD induction has not arise from previous studies. In this paper, a theory presented for explain mechanism of ICD induction from near field interaction of chiral molecule with achiral nanostructure. By introducing dipole approaching of chiral molecule and a near field approximation of molecule-nanostructure interac…
Circular dichroism (CD), i.e. the differential response of a system to left and right circularly polarized light, is one of the only techniques capable of providing morphological information of certain samples. In biology, for instance, CD spectroscopy is widely used to study the structure of proteins. More recently, it has also been used to characterize metamaterials and plasmonic structures. Typically, CD can only be observed in chiral objects. Here, we present experimental results showing that a non-chiral sample such as a sub-wavelength circular nano-aperture can produce giant CD when a vo…
We present a general theory of circular dichroism in planar chiral nanostructures with rotational symmetry. It is demonstrated, analytically, that the handedness of the incident field's polarization can control whether a nanostructure induces either absorption or scattering losses, even when the total optical loss (extinction) is polarization-independent. We show that this effect is a consequence of modal interference so that strong circular dichroism in absorption and scattering can be engineered by combining Fano resonances with planar chiral nanoparticle clusters.
We explore experimentally if the light's orbital angular momentum (OAM) interacts with chiral nematic polymer films. Specifically, we measure the circular dichroism of such a material using light beams with different OAM. We investigate the case of strongly focussed, non-paraxial light beams, where the spatial and polarization degrees of freedom are coupled. Within the experimental accuracy, we cannot find any influence of the OAM on the circular dichroism of the cholesteric polymer.
Theory shows that a slab of a dielectric structurally chiral material (DSCM) exhibits both linear and circular dichroisms because of its anisotropy and structural chirality, for normal as well as oblique incidence. This conclusion was confirmed by fabricating a chiral sculptured thin film and measuring the spectra of its reflectances and transmittances, both linear and circular. Signatures of the circular Bragg phenomenon are evident in the spectra of all reflectances, transmittances, absorptances, and dichroisms. Reversal of the structural handedness of a DSCM and rotation of the projection o…
Sometimes it appears, sometimes it does not. We present a theoretical study of circular dichroism in the second-harmonic signal of single dielectric nanostructures with different symmetries and noncentrosymmetric materials. We show that this effect is not fully identified only by macroscopic and lattice symmetries, but their relative orientation as well. Based on the cumbersome symmetry and modal analysis, we provide a general and very simple formula to determine whether the dichroism exists, and a table with the most significant cases.
We report extremely strong optical activity and circular dichroism exhibited by subwavelength arrays of four-start-screw holes fabricated with one-pass focused ion beam milling of freely suspended silver films. Having the fourth order rotational symmetry, the structures exhibit the polarization rotation up to 90 degrees and peaks of full circular dichroism and operate as circular polarizers within certain ranges of wavelengths in the visible. We discuss the observations on the basis of general principles (symmetry, reciprocity and reversibility) and conclude that the extreme optical chirality …
We present the new planar extrinsic chirality metamaterial (ECM) design that manifests giant circular dichroism (CD) in the visible spectrum range rather than usual near-infrared and terahertz range. Effects of incident beam angles and meta-molecules unit sizes on the CD spectrums were theoretically analyzed; Physical mechanism was illustrated in new figures of asymmetrical current excitation in neighboring unit cells.
Circular dichroism covering the telecommunication band is experimentally demonstrated in a semiconductor-based three-dimensional chiral photonic crystal (PhC). We design a rotationally-stacked woodpile PhC structure where neighboring layers are rotated by 60 degrees and three layers construct a single helical unit. The mirror-asymmetric PhC made from GaAs with sub-micron periodicity is fabricated by a micro-manipulation technique. Due to the large contrast of refractive indices between GaAs and air, the experimentally obtained circular dichroism extends over a wide wavelength range, with the t…
We study nonlinear response of a dimer composed of two identical Mie-resonant dielectric nanoparticles illuminated normally by a circularly polarized light. We develop a general theory describing hybridization of multipolar modes of the coupled nanoparticles, and reveal nonvanishing nonlinear circular dichroism (CD) in the second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal enhanced by the multipolar resonances in the dimer provided its axis is oriented under an angle to the crystalline lattice of the dielectric material. We present experimental results for this SHG-CD effect obtained for the AlGaAs dimer…
Three ultra-short-period W/B4C multilayers (1.244nm, 1.235nm and 1.034nm) have been fabricated and used for polarization measurement at the 4B7B Beamline of Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF). By rotating analyzer ellipsometry method, the linear polarization degree of light emerging from this beamline has been measured and the circular polarization evaluated for 700eV-860eV. The first soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements are carried out at BSRF by positioning the beamline aperture out of the plane of the electron storage ring.
We report the first experiential observation and theoretical analysis of the new phenomenon of planar chiral circular conversion dichroism, which in some aspects resembles the Faraday effect in magnetized media, but does not require the presence of a magnetic field for its observation. It results from the interaction of an electromagnetic wave with a planar chiral structure patterned on the sub-wavelength scale, and manifests itself in asymmetric transmission of circularly polarized waves in the opposite directions through the structure and elliptically polarized eigenstates. The new effect is…
We present a novel chiral sensing platform that combines a one-dimensional photonic crystal design with a birefringent surface defect. The platform sustains simultaneous transverse electric and transverse magnetic surface modes, which are exploited to generate chiral surface waves. The present design provides homogeneous and superchiral fields of both handednesses over arbitrarily large areas in a wide spectral range, resulting in the enhancement of the circular dichroism signal by two orders of magnitude, thus paving the road toward the successful combination of surface-enhanced spectroscopie…
Circular dichroism (CD) is absorption difference of right-hand and left-hand circularly polarized light by components. CD spectroscopy technique is an important tool for detecting molecular chirality, but the molecular circular dichroism (MCD) is weak and always appears in the ultraviolet (UV) region that is more noisy than visual range (VR). Induced circular dichroism (ICD) arisen from near-field interaction of plasmonic nanostructures and chiral molecules enhances the detection limit of molecular chirality and usually appears in VR. In this study, quadrilateral arranged nanoholes (QAN) are p…
This publication presents a novel interferometric method for the simultaneous spatially resolved analysis of an object under test regarding the phase transmission function and the magnitude and orientation of dichroism. Analogous to the classical phase shifting interferometry the measurement strategy is based on the variation of phase and polarization in an interferometer. This procedure allows to analyse simultaneously and spatially resolved the dichroic properties of the object and its impact on the phase of the incoming light in one measurement cycle. The theoretical description of the inve…
Circularly-polarized extreme UV and X-ray radiation provides valuable access to the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of materials. To date, this capability was available only at large-scale X-ray facilities such as synchrotrons. Here we demonstrate the first bright, phase-matched, extreme UV circularly-polarized high harmonics and use this new light source for magnetic circular dichroism measurements at the M-shell absorption edges of Co. We show that phase matching of circularly-polarized harmonics is unique and robust, producing a photon flux comparable to the linearly polarize…
We use numerical simulations to demonstrate third-harmonic generation with near-unity nonlinear circular dichroism (CD) and high conversion efficiency ($ 10^{-2}\ \text{W}^{-2}$) in asymmetric Si-on-SiO$_2$ metasurfaces. The working principle relies on the selective excitation of a quasi-bound state in the continuum, characterized by a very high ($>10^5$) quality-factor. By tuning multi-mode interference with the variation of the metasurface geometrical parameters, we show the possibility of independent control of linear CD and nonlinear CD. Our results pave the way for the development of all-…
Optical activity is a fundamental phenomenon originating from the chiral nature of crystals and molecules. While intrinsic chiroptical responses of ordinary chiral materials to circularly polarized light are relatively weak, they can be enhanced by specially tailored nanostructures. Here, nanorod metamaterials, comprising a dense array of vertically aligned gold nanorods, is shown to provide significant enhancement of the circular dichroism response of an embedded material. A nanorod composite, acting as an artificial uniaxial crystal, is filled with chiral mercury sulfide nanocrystals embedde…
The near-field interaction of plasmonic nanostructures and chiral molecules induces circular dichroism in achiral nanostructure. The induced circular dichroism (ICD) strength is several orders greater than the molecular inherent CD (MCD), and it generally appears at visual range (VR) where the CD signal is easily detectable. Therefore, the ICD is considered as a potential method to detect single molecular chirality. In this study, cross shaped nanohole (CSN) is proposed for enhancing the MCD signal. The maximum enhancement of the structure reached 450 folds of molecular inherent MCD. Through a…
We report a series of experimental, analytical and numerical studies demonstrating strong circular dichroism in helically twisted hollow-core single-ring photonic crystal fiber (SR-PCF), formed by spinning the preform during fiber drawing. In the SR-PCFs studied, the hollow core is surrounded by a single ring of non-touching capillaries. Coupling between these capillaries results in the formation of helical Bloch modes carrying orbital angular momentum. In the twisted fiber, strong circular birefringence appears in the ring, so that when a core mode with a certain circular polarization state (…
Circular dichroism (CD), induced by chirality, is an important tool for manipulating light or for characterizing morphology of molecules, proteins, crystals and nano-structures. CD is manifested over a wide size-range, from molecules to crystals or large nanostructures. Being a weak phenomenon (small fraction of absorption), CD is routinely measured on macroscopic amount of matter in solution, crystals, or arrays of fabricated meta-particles. These measurements mask the sensitivity of CD to small structural variation in nano-objects. Recently, several groups reported on chiroptical effects in …
Circular dichroism is a technologically important phenomenon contrasting the absorption and resultant emission properties between left- and right-handed circularly polarized light. While the chiral handedness of systems mainly determines the mechanism of the circular dichroism in linear optics, the counterpart in the nonlinear optical regime is nontrivial. Here, in contrast to traditional nonlinear circular dichroism responses from structured surfaces, we report on an unprecedented bulk-material-induced circular dichroism of second harmonic generation with a massive g-factor up to 1.8.
The plasmonic chirality has drawn a lot of attention because of the tunable circular dichroism (CD) and the enhancement for the signal of chiral molecules. Different mechanisms have been proposed for explaining the plasmonic CD, however, a quantitative one like ab initio mechanism in chiral molecules is still unavailable. In this work, a mechanism similar to the chiral molecules is analyzed. The giant extrinsic circular dichroism of plasmonic splitting rectangle ring is quantitatively investigated theoretically. The interplay of electric and magnetic modes of the meta-structure is proposed to …
It is shown theoretically that a nonchiral, two-dimensional array of metallic spheres exhibits optical activity as manifested in calculations of circular dichroism. The metallic spheres occupy the sites of a rectangular lattice and for off-normal incidence they show a strong circular-dichroism effect around the surface plasmon frequencies. The optical activity is a result of the rectangular symmetry of the lattice which gives rise to different polarizations modes of the crystal along the two orthogonal primitive lattice vectors. These two polarization modes result in a net polar vector, which …
Over the past two decades, metamaterials have led to an increasing number of biosensing and nanophotonic applications due to the possibility of a careful control of light propagating through subwavelength features. Chiral nanostructures (characterized by the absence of any mirror symmetry), in particular, give rise to unique chiro-optical properties such as circular dichroism and optical activity. Here, we present a gyroid optical metamaterial with a periodicity of 65 nm exhibiting a strong circular dichroism at visible wavelengths. Our bottom-up approach, based on metallic replication of the …
In the close vicinity of a chiral nanostructure, the circular dichroism of a biomolecule could be greatly enhanced, due to the interaction with the local superchiral fields. Modest enhancement of optical activity using a planar metamaterial, with some chiral properties, and achiral nanoparticles has been previously reported. A more substantial chirality enhancement can be achieved in the local filed of a chiral nanostructure with a three-dimensional arrangement. Using an embossed chiral nanostructure designed for chiroptical sensing, we measure the circular dichroism spectra of two biomolecule…
We theoretically investigate light matter interactions for chiral molecules in the presence of non-chiral nanoantennas. Isotropic nanostructures supporting optical-frequency electric or magnetic dipoles are sufficient to locally enhance the excitation of a molecule's chiral polarizability and thus its circular dichroism spectrum. However, simultaneous electric and magnetic dipoles are necessary to achieve a net, spatially-averaged enhancement. Our contribution provides a theoretical framework to understand chiral light-matter interactions at the nanoscale and sets the necessary and sufficient …
Circular dichroism is widely used for characterizing organic and biological materials, but measurements at a single molecule level are challenging because differences in absorption for opposite helicities are small. Here we show that extrinsic chirality can induce giant circular dichroism in individual carbon nanotubes, with degree of polarization reaching 65%. The signal has a large dependence on the incidence angle, consistent with the interpretation that mirror symmetry breaking by the optical wave vector is responsible for the effect. We propose that field-induced charge distribution resul…
Negative real parts of the permittivity and permeability lead an isotropic chiral medium to exhibit circular dichroism that is reversed with respect to that exhibited by an identical medium but the real parts of whose permittivity and permeability are positive.
Circular dichroism (CD) is in widespread use as a means of determining enantiomeric excess. We show how slow-light phenomena in dispersive structured media allow for a reduction in the required optical path length of an order of magnitude. The same ideas may be used to enhance the sensitivity of CD measurements while maintaining the same optical path length through the sample. Finally, the sensitivity may be enhanced in frequency regimes where CD data is typically not accessible due to a modest chiral response of the enantiomers.
Conventional linear optical activity effects are widely used for studying chiral materials. However, poor contrast and artifacts due to sample anisotropy limit the applicability of these methods. Here we demonstrate that nonlinear second-harmonic-generation circular dichroism spectral microscopy can overcome these limits. In intact collagenous tissues, clear spectral resonance is observed with sub-micrometer spatial resolution. By performing gradual protein denaturation studies, we show that the resonant responses are dominantly due to the molecular chirality.
Strong enhancement of molecular circular dichroism has the potential to enable efficient asymmetric photolysis, a method of chiral separation that has conventionally been impeded by insufficient yield and low enantiomeric excess. Here, we study experimentally how predicted enhancements in optical chirality density near resonant silicon nanodisks boost circular dichroism. We use fluorescence-detected circular dichroism spectroscopy to measure indirectly the differential absorption of circularly polarized light by a monolayer of optically active molecules functionalized to silicon nanodisk array…
X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) is generally not observed for antiferromagnetic (AFM) states because XMCD signals from the antiparallelly coupled spins cancel each other. In this letter, we theoretically show the presence of an XMCD signal from compensated two-dimensional triangle AFM structures on a Kagome lattice. The calculation reveals the complete correspondence between the XMCD spectra and the sign of the spin chirality: the XMCD signal only appears when the spin chirality is negative. This XMCD signal originates from the different absorption coefficients of the three sublattice…
Polarization-dependent photon spectroscopy (dichroism) using signal-enhancing superchiral beams is shown to be sensitive to magnetic properties of the sample, whereas previous investigations explored charge-like electronic properties of chiral samples. In the process of unveiling the potential to observe magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), we underline an affinity between spectroscopies using the Borrmann effect, twisted beams and superchiral beams. Use of an effective wavevector in a quantum-mechanical theory unites the aforementioned spectroscopies and vastly improves our understanding of the…
We propose a Babinet-invertible chiral metasurface for achieving dynamically reversible and strong circular dichroism (CD). The proposed metasurface is composed of VO$_2$-metal hybrid structure, and when VO$_2$ transits between the dielectric state and the metallic state, the metasurface unit cell switches between complementary structures that are designed according to the Babinet principle. This leads to a large and reversible CD tuning range between $\pm 0.5$ at 0.97~THz, which is larger than the literature. We attribute the CD effect to extrinsic chirality of the proposed metasurface. We en…
Polariton states with high levels of chiral dissymmetry offer exciting prospects for quantum information, sensing, and lasing applications. Such dissymmetry must emanate from either the involved optical resonators or the quantum emitters. Here, we theoretically demonstrate how chiral polaritons can be realized by combining (high quality factor) achiral Fabry-Perot cavities with samples exhibiting a phenomenon known as "apparent circular dichroism" (ACD), which results from an interference between linear birefringence and dichroic interactions. By introducing a quantum electrodynamical theory o…
We study the magneto-optical response of noble metal nanoparticle clusters. We consider the interaction between the light-induced dipoles of particles. In the presence of a magnetic field, the simplest achiral cluster, a dimer, exhibits circular dichroism (CD). The CD of a dimer depends on the directions of the magnetic field and the light wave vector. The CD of a populous cluster weakly depends on the magnetic field. Upon scattering from the cluster, an incident linearly polarized light with polarization azimuth $φ$, becomes elliptically polarized. The polarization azimuth rotation and ellipt…
Experimental investigations of ultrafast magnetization dynamics increasingly employ resonant magnetic spectroscopy in the ultraviolet spectral range. Besides allowing to disentangle the element-specific transient response of functional magnetic systems, these techniques also promise to access attosecond to few-femtosecond dynamics of spin excitations. Here, we report on a systematic study of transient magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) on the transition metals Fe, Co and Ni as well as on a FeNi and GdFe alloy and reveal a delayed onset between the electronic and magnetic response. Supported by …
We describe the development of a broadband magneto-optical spectrometer with femtosecond temporal resolution. The absorption spectrometer is based on a white-light supercontinuum (ca. 320 - 750 nm) using shot-to-shot temporal and spectral referencing at 1 kHz. Static and transient absorption spectra using circularly polarised light are collected in a magnetic field. The difference spectra with respect to the external field direction give the static and transient magneto-optical Faraday rotation (magnetic optical rotary dispersion) and ellipticity (magnetic circular dichroism) spectra. An achro…
The topological protected electronic states on the surface of a topological insulator can progressively change their Fermi cross-section from circular to a snowflake shape as the chemical potential is increased above the Dirac point because of an hexagonal warping term in the Hamiltonian. Another effect of warping is to change the spin texture which exists when a finite gap is included by magnetic doping, although the in-plane spin component remains locked perpendicular to momentum. It also changes the orbital magnetic moment, the matrix element for optical absorption and the circular dichrois…
In this work, the circular dichroisms (CD) of nanorice heterodimers consisting of two parallel arranged nanorices with the same size but different materials are investigated theoretically. Symmetry-breaking is introduced by using different materials and oblique incidence to achieve strong CD at the vicinity of Fano resonance peaks. We demonstrate that all Au-Ag heterodimers exhibit multipolar Fano resonances and strong CD effect. A simple quantitative analysis shows that the structure with larger Fano asymmetry factor has stronger CD. The intensity and peak positions of the CD effect can be fl…

Photoelectron circular dichroism results from one-photon ionization of chiral molecules by circularly polarized light and manifests itself in forward-backward asymmetry of electron emission in the direction orthogonal to the light polarization plane. To expose the physical mechanism responsible for asymmetric electron ejection, we first establish a rigorous relation between the responses of unaligned and partially or perfectly aligned molecules. Next, we identify a propensity field, which is responsible for the chiral response in the electric-dipole approximation, i.e. a chiral response withou…
