We show that the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) can construct with polynomially scaling resources the ground state of the fully-connected p-spin Ising ferromagnet, a problem that notoriously poses severe difficulties to a Quantum Annealing (QA) approach, due to the exponentially small gaps encountered at first-order phase transition for ${\rm p} \ge 3$. For a target ground state at arbitrary transverse field, we find that an appropriate QAOA parameter initialization is necessary to achieve a good performance of the algorithm when the number of variational parameters $2{\rm P}$ is much smaller than the system size ${\rm N}$, because of the large number of sub-optimal local minima. Instead, when ${\rm P}$ exceeds a critical value ${\rm P}^*_{\rm N} \propto {\rm N}$, the structure of the parameter space simplifies, as all minima become degenerate. This allows to achieve the ground state with perfect fidelity with a number of parameters scaling extensively with ${\rm N}$, and with resources scaling polynomially with ${\rm N}$.
We propose GM-QAOA, a variation of the Quantum Alternating Operator Ansatz (QAOA) that uses Grover-like selective phase shift mixing operators. GM-QAOA works on any NP optimization problem for which it is possible to efficiently prepare an equal superposition of all feasible solutions; it is designed to perform particularly well for constraint optimization problems, where not all possible variable assignments are feasible solutions. GM-QAOA has the following features: (i) It is not susceptible to Hamiltonian Simulation error (such as Trotterization errors) as its operators can be implemented e…
Recently, there has been much interest in the efficient preparation of complex quantum states using low-depth quantum circuits, such as Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA). While it has been numerically shown that such algorithms prepare certain correlated states of quantum spins with surprising accuracy, a systematic way of quantifying the efficiency of QAOA in general classes of models has been lacking. Here, we propose that the success of QAOA in preparing ordered states is related to the interaction distance of the target state, which measures how close that state is to the m…
Local Hamiltonians with topological quantum order exhibit highly entangled ground states that cannot be prepared by shallow quantum circuits. Here, we show that this property may extend to all low-energy states in the presence of an on-site $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. This proves a version of the No Low-Energy Trivial States (NLTS) conjecture for a family of local Hamiltonians with symmetry protected topological order. A surprising consequence of this result is that the Goemans-Williamson algorithm outperforms the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) for certain instances of MaxCut, …
Quantum variational algorithms have garnered significant interest recently, due to their feasibility of being implemented and tested on noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) devices. We examine the robustness of the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA), which can be used to solve certain quantum control problems, state preparation problems, and combinatorial optimization problems. We demonstrate that the error of QAOA simulation can be significantly reduced by robust control optimization techniques, specifically, by sequential convex programming (SCP), to ensure error suppressio…

Determining Hamiltonian ground states and energies is a challenging task with many possible approaches on quantum computers. While variational quantum eigensolvers are popular approaches for near term hardware, adiabatic state preparation is an alternative that does not require noisy optimization of parameters. Beyond adiabatic schedules, QAOA is an important method for optimization problems. In this work we modify QAOA to apply to finding ground states of molecules and empirically evaluate the modified algorithm on several molecules. This modification applies physical insights used in classic…

The quantum alternating operator ansatz (QAOA) is a prominent example of variational quantum algorithms. We propose a generalized QAOA called CD-QAOA, which is inspired by the counterdiabatic driving procedure, designed for quantum many-body systems and optimized using a reinforcement learning (RL) approach. The resulting hybrid control algorithm proves versatile in preparing the ground state of quantum-chaotic many-body spin chains by minimizing the energy. We show that using terms occurring in the adiabatic gauge potential as generators of additional control unitaries, it is possible to achi…
The variational preparation of complex quantum states using the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) is of fundamental interest, and becomes a promising application of quantum computers. Here, we systematically study the performance of QAOA for preparing ground states of target Hamiltonians near the critical points of their quantum phase transitions, and generating Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states. We reveal that the performance of QAOA is related to the translational invariance of the target Hamiltonian: Without the translational symmetry, for instance due to the open bou…

We apply digitized Quantum Annealing (QA) and Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) to a paradigmatic task of supervised learning in artificial neural networks: the optimization of synaptic weights for the binary perceptron. At variance with the usual QAOA applications to MaxCut, or to quantum spin-chains ground state preparation, the classical Hamiltonian is characterized by highly non-local multi-spin interactions. Yet, we provide evidence for the existence of optimal smooth solutions for the QAOA parameters, which are transferable among typical instances of the same problem, and…
The quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) has become a cornerstone of contemporary quantum applications development. In QAOA, a quantum circuit is trained -- by repeatedly adjusting circuit parameters -- to solve a problem. Several recent findings have reported parameter concentration effects in QAOA and their presence has become one of folklore: while empirically observed, the concentrations have not been defined and analytical approaches remain scarce, focusing on limiting system and not considering parameter scaling as system size increases. We found that optimal QAOA circuit pa…
In this paper I propose a new method of encoding discrete variables into Ising model qubits for quantum optimization. The new method is based on the physics of domain walls in one dimensional Ising spin chains. I find that these encodings and the encoding of arbitrary two variable interactions is possible with only two body Ising terms. Following on from similar results for the `one hot' method of encoding discrete variables [Hadfield et. al. Algorithms 12.2 (2019): 34] I also demonstrate that it is possible to construct two body mixer terms which do not leave the logical subspace, an importan…
Combinatorial optimization is among the main applications envisioned for near-term and fault-tolerant quantum computers. In this work, we consider a well-studied quantum algorithm for combinatorial optimization: the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) applied to the MaxCut problem on 3-regular graphs. We explore the idea of improving the solutions returned by the simplest version of the algorithm (depth-1 QAOA) using a form of postselection that can be efficiently simulated by state preparation. We derive theoretical upper and lower bounds showing that a constant (though small) i…
Hybrid quantum-classical variational algorithms such as the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) are promising applications for noisy, intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers. Both VQE and QAOA variationally extremize the expectation value of a Hamiltonian. All work to date on VQE and QAOA has been limited to Pauli representations of Hamiltonians. However, many cases exist in which a sparse representation of the Hamiltonian is known but there is no efficient Pauli representation. We extend VQE to general sparse Hamiltonians. We pro…
We establish and discuss a number of connections between a digitized version of Quantum Annealing (QA) with the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) introduced by Farhi et al. (arXiv:1411.4028) as an alternative hybrid quantum-classical variational scheme for quantum-state preparation and optimization. We introduce a technique that allows to prove, for instance, a rigorous bound concerning the performance of QAOA for MaxCut on a $2$-regular graph, equivalent to an unfrustrated antiferromagnetic Ising chain. The bound shows that the optimal variational error of a depth-$\mathrm{P}$…
In this brief report, we propose a possible way, theoretically and experimentally, to generate a NOON state of the two degenerate ferromagnetic ground states of the Transverse Ising Model. In our scheme we employ the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) effect between the two degenerate ferromagnetic ground states to realize the NOON state. Our calculation about the MQT process is based on a higher-order degenerate perturbation method. After doing a transformation, the MQT process could also be treated as the hopping of individual virtual fermions in the spin chain, which will leads to an analy…
Ground-state preparation for a given Hamiltonian is a common quantum-computing task of great importance and has relevant applications in quantum chemistry, computational material modeling, and combinatorial optimization. We consider an approach to simulate dissipative non-Hermitian Hamiltonian quantum dynamics using Hamiltonian simulation techniques to efficiently recover the ground state of a target Hamiltonian. The proposed method facilitates the energy transfer by repeatedly projecting ancilla qubits to the desired state, rendering the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian evolution on the sy…
A number of commercially available quantum computers, such as those based on trapped-ion or superconducting qubits, can now perform mid-circuit measurements and resets. In addition to being crucial for quantum error correction, this capability can help reduce the number of qubits needed to execute many types of quantum algorithms by measuring qubits as early as possible, resetting them, and reusing them elsewhere in the circuit. In this work, we introduce the idea of qubit-reuse compilation, which takes as input a quantum circuit and produces as output a compiled circuit that requires fewer qu…
We demonstrate the feasibility of ground state preparation for the transverse Ising model using projective cooling, and show that the algorithm can effectively construct the ground state in the disordered (paramagnetic) phase. On the other hand, significant temperature effects are encountered in the ordered (ferromagnetic) phase requiring larger lattices to accurately simulate.
In spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, spin-changing collisions are a remarkable proxy to coherently realize macroscopic many-body quantum states. These processes have been, e.g., exploited to generate entanglement, to study dynamical quantum phase transitions, and proposed for realizing nematic phases in atomic condensates. In the same systems dressed by Raman beams, the coupling between spin and momentum induces a spin dependence in the scattering processes taking place in the gas. Here we show that, at weak couplings, such modulation of the collisions leads to an effective Hamiltonian which i…
There has been an extensive development in the use of multi-partite entanglement as a resource for various quantum information processing tasks. In this paper we focus on preparing arbitrary spin eigenstates whose subset contain important entangled resources like Dicke states as well as some other sub-radiant states that are difficult to prepare. Leveraging on the symmetry of these states we consider uniform pairwise exchange coupling between every pair of qubits. Starting from a product state of a given spin eigenstate with a single qubit state, another spin eigenstate can be prepared using s…
Spin preparation and spin detection are fundamental problems in spintronics and in several solid state proposals for quantum information processing. Here we propose the mesoscopic equivalent of an optical polarizing beam splitter (PBS). This interferometric device uses non-dispersive phases (Aharonov-Bohm and Rashba) in order to separate spin up and spin down carriers into distinct outputs and thus it is analogous to a Stern-Gerlach apparatus. It can be used both as a spin preparation device and as a spin measuring device by converting spin into charge (orbital) degrees of freedom. An importan…
Gate model quantum computers promise to solve currently intractable computational problems if they can be operated at scale with long coherence times and high fidelity logic. Neutral atom hyperfine qubits provide inherent scalability due to their identical characteristics, long coherence times, and ability to be trapped in dense multi-dimensional arrays\cite{Saffman2010}. Combined with the strong entangling interactions provided by Rydberg states\cite{Jaksch2000,Gaetan2009,Urban2009}, all the necessary characteristics for quantum computation are available. Here we demonstrate several quantum a…

The extensive control of spin makes spintronics a promising candidate for future scalable quantum devices. For the generation of spin-superfluid systems, a detailed understanding of the build-up of coherence and relaxation is necessary. However, to determine the relevant parameters for robust coherence properties and faithfully witnessing thermalization, the direct access to space- and time-resolved spin observables is needed. Here, we study the thermalization of an easy-plane ferromagnet employing a homogeneous one-dimensional spinor Bose gas. Building on the pristine control of preparation a…
We describe the dynamical preparation of magnetic states in a strongly interacting two-component Bose gas in a harmonic trap. By mapping this system to an effective spin chain model, we obtain the dynamical spin densities and the fidelities for a few-body system. We show that the spatial profiles transit between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states as the intraspecies interaction parameter is slowly increased.
This paper presents the Maximum Amplification Optimisation Algorithm (MAOA), a novel quantum algorithm designed for combinatorial optimisation in the restricted circuit depth context of near-term quantum computing. The MAOA first produces a quantum state in which the optimal solutions to a problem are amplified to the maximum extent possible subject to a given restricted circuit depth. Subsequent repeated preparation and measurement of this maximally amplified state produces solutions of the highest quality as efficiently as possible. The MAOA performs considerably better than other near-term …
We investigate the quality of quantum state transfer through a uniformly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chain in a multi-excitation subspace. The fidelity of state transfer using multi-excitation channels is found to compare well with communication protocols based on the ground state of a spin chain with ferromagnetic interactions. Our numerical results support the conjecture that the fidelity of state transfer through a multi-excitation subspace only depends on the number of initial excitations present in the chain and is independent of the excitation ordering. Based on these results, we desc…
One of the challenges currently facing the quantum computing community is the design of quantum circuits which can efficiently run on near-term quantum computers, known as the quantum compiling problem. Algorithms such as the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE), Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), and Quantum Architecture Search (QAS) have been shown to generate or find optimal near-term quantum circuits. However, these methods are computationally expensive and yield little insight into the circuit design process. In this paper, we propose Quantum Deep Dreaming (QDD), an algor…
We present a protocol for quantum state transfer and remote state preparation across spin chains which operate in their anti-ferromagnetic mode. The proposed mechanism harnesses the inherent entanglement of the ground state of the strongly correlated many-body systems which naturally exists for free. The uniform Hamiltonian of the system does not need any engineering and, during the whole process, remains intact while a single qubit measurement followed by a single-qubit rotation are employed for both encoding and inducing dynamics in the system. This, in fact, has been inspired by recent prog…
We address the question whether the super-Heisenberg scaling for quantum estimation is realizable. We unify the results of two approaches. In the first one, the original system is compared with its copy rotated by the parameter dependent dynamics. If the parameter is coupled to the one-body part of the Hamiltonian the precision of its estimation is known to scale at most as $N^{-1}$ (Heisenberg scaling) in terms of the number of elementary subsystems used, $N$. The second approach considers fidelity at criticality often leading to an apparent super-Heisenberg scaling. However, scaling of time …
