Recently Gouveia, Thomas and the authors introduced the slack realization space, a new model for the realization space of a polytope. It represents each polytope by its slack matrix, the matrix obtained by evaluating each facet inequality at each vertex. Unlike the classical model, the slack model naturally mods out projective transformations. It is inherently algebraic, arising as the positive part of a variety of a saturated determinantal ideal, and provides a new computational tool to study classical realizability problems for polytopes. We introduce the package SlackIdeals for Macaulay2, that provides methods for creating and manipulating slack matrices and slack ideals of convex polytopes and matroids. Slack ideals are often difficult to compute. To improve the power of the slack model, we develop two strategies to simplify computations: we scale as many entries of the slack matrix as possible to one; we then obtain a reduced slack model combining the slack variety with the more compact Grassmannian realization space model. This allows us to study slack ideals that were previously out of computational reach. As applications, we show that the well-known Perles polytope does not admit rational realizations and prove the non-realizability of a large quasi-simplicial sphere.
The slack ideal of a polytope is a saturated determinantal ideal that gives rise to a new model for the realization space of the polytope. The simplest slack ideals are toric and have connections to projectively unique polytopes. We prove that if a projectively unique polytope has a toric slack ideal, then it is the toric ideal of the bipartite graph of vertex-facet non-incidences of the polytope. The slack ideal of a polytope is contained in this toric ideal if and only if the polytope is morally 2-level, a generalization of the 2-level property in polytopes. We show that polytopes that do no…
In this paper we introduce a natural model for the realization space of a polytope up to projective equivalence which we call the slack realization space of the polytope. The model arises from the positive part of an algebraic variety determined by the slack ideal of the polytope. This is a saturated determinantal ideal that encodes the combinatorics of the polytope. We also derive a new model of the realization space of a polytope from the positive part of the variety of a related ideal. The slack ideal offers an effective computational framework for several classical questions about polytope…
In this paper we examine four different models for the realization space of a polytope: the classical model, the Grassmannian model, the Gale transform model, and the slack variety. Respectively, they identify realizations of the polytopes with the matrix whose columns are the coordinates of their vertices, the column space of said matrix, their Gale transforms, and their slack matrices. Each model has been used to study realizations of polytopes. In this paper we establish very explicitly the maps that allow us to move between models, study their precise relationships, and combine the strengt…
In this paper, we study algorithmic questions concerning products of matrices and their consequences for recognition algorithms for polyhedra. The 1-product of matrices $S_1$, $S_2$ is a matrix whose columns are the concatenation of each column of $S_1$ with each column of $S_2$. The $k$-product generalizes the $1$-product, by taking as input two matrices $S_1, S_2$ together with $k-1$ special rows of each of those matrices, and outputting a certain composition of $S_1,S_2$. Our study is motivated by a close link between the 1-product of matrices and the Cartesian product of polytopes, and mor…
We introduce a new model for the realization space of a matroid, which is obtained from a variety defined by a saturated determinantal ideal, called the slack ideal, coming from the vertex-hyperplane incidence matrix of the matroid. This is inspired by a similar model for the slack realization space of a polytope. We show how to use these ideas to certify non-realizability of matroids, and describe an explicit relationship to the standard Grassmann-Plücker realization space model. We also exhibit a way of detecting projectively unique matroids via their slack ideals by introducing a toric idea…
We illustrate the limitations of the hyperplane separation bound, a non-combinatorial lower bound on the extension complexity of a polytope. Most notably, this bounding technique is used by Rothvoß (J ACM 64.6:41, 2017) to establish an exponential lower bound for the perfect matching polytope. We point out that the technique is sensitive to the particular choice of slack matrix. For the canonical slack matrices of the spanning tree polytope and the completion time polytope, we show that the lower bounds produced by the hyperplane separation method are trivial. These bounds may, however, be str…
Characterization of $\mathfrak{k}$-highest weight and $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$-dominant tableaux via $1$-$0$-slack recording tableaux in the quantum Littlewood-Richardson rule and lattice points in flagged hive polytopes
The 1-product of matrices $S_1 \in \mathbb{R}^{m_1 \times n_1}$ and $S_2 \in \mathbb{R}^{m_2 \times n_2}$ is the matrix in $\mathbb{R}^{(m_1+m_2) \times (n_1n_2)}$ whose columns are the concatenation of each column of $S_1$ with each column of $S_2$. Our main result is a polynomial time algorithm for the following problem: given a matrix $S$, is $S$ a 1-product, up to permutation of rows and columns? Our main motivation is a close link between the 1-product of matrices and the Cartesian product of polytopes, which goes through the concept of slack matrix. Determining whether a given matrix is …
The toric ideals of $3\times 3$ transportation polytopes $T$ are quadratically generated. The only exception is the Birkhoff polytope $B_3$. If $T$ is not a multiple of $B_3$, these ideals even have squarefree quadratic initial ideals. This class contains all smooth $3 \times 3$ transportation polytopes.
In this paper, we discuss the normality of the toric rings of stable set polytopes, and the set of generators and Gröbner bases of toric ideals of stable set polytopes by using the results on that of edge polytopes of finite nonsimple graphs. In particular, for a graph of stability number two, we give a graph theoretical characterization of the set of generators of the toric ideal of the stable set polytope, and a criterion to check whether the toric ring of the stable set polytope is normal or not. One of the application of the results is an infinite family of stable set polytopes whose toric…
The main goal of this paper is to give explicit descriptions of two maximal cones in the Gröbner fan of the Plücker ideal. These cones correspond to the monomial ideals given by semistandard and PBW-semistandard Young tableaux. For the first cone, as an intermediate result we obtain the description of a maximal cone in the Gröbner fan of any Hibi ideal. For the second, we generalize the notion of Hibi ideals by associating an ideal with every interpolating polytope. This is a family of polytopes that generalizes the order and chain polytopes of a poset (à la Fang--Fourier--Litza--Pegel). We th…
A referee found an error in the proof of the Main Theorem ("toric ideals of flow polytopes are generated in degree 3") that we could not fix. More precisely, the proof of Lemma 4.2.(ii) is incorrect. The results on Gröbner bases are untouched by this. ----- We show that toric ideals of flow polytopes are generated in degree 3. This was conjectured by Diaconis and Eriksson for the special case of the Birkhoff polytope. Our proof uses a hyperplane subdivision method developed by Haase and Paffenholz. It is known that reduced revlex Gröbner bases of the toric ideal of the Birkhoff polytope $B_n$ …
Let P be a poset, O(P) the order polytope of P and C(P) the chain polytope of P. In this paper, we study the canonical ideal of the Ehrhart ring K[C(P)] of C(P) over a field K and characterize the level (resp. anticanonical level) property of K[C(P)] by a combinatorial structure of P. In particular, we show that if K[C(P)] is level (resp. anticanonical level), then so is K[O(P)]. We exhibit examples which show the converse does not hold. Moreover, we show that the symbolic powers of the canonical ideal of K[C(P)] are identical with ordinary ones and degrees of the generators of the canonical a…
The square root rank of a nonnegative matrix $A$ is the minimum rank of a matrix $B$ such that $A=B \circ B$, where $\circ$ denotes entrywise product. We show that the square root rank of the slack matrix of the correlation polytope is exponential. Our main technique is a way to lower bound the rank of certain matrices under arbitrary sign changes of the entries using properties of the roots of polynomials in number fields. The square root rank is an upper bound on the positive semidefinite rank of a matrix, and corresponds the special case where all matrices in the factorization are rank-one.
Toric topology assigns to each $n$-dimensional combinatorial simple convex polytope $P$ with $m$ facets an $(m+n)$-dimensional moment-angle manifold $\mathcal{Z}_P$ with an action of a compact torus $T^m$ such that $\mathcal{Z}_P/T^m$ is a convex polytope of combinatorial type $P$. A simple $n$-polytope is called $B$-rigid, if any isomorphism of graded rings $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_P,\mathbb Z)= H^*(\mathcal{Z}_Q,\mathbb Z)$ for a simple $n$-polytope $Q$ implies that $P$ and $Q$ are combinatorially equivalent. An ideal almost Pogorelov polytope is a combinatorial $3$-polytope obtained by cutting off …
Let $G$ be a finite connected simple graph with $d$ vertices and let $\Pc_G \subset \RR^d$ be the edge polytope of $G$. We call $\Pc_G$ \emph{decomposable} if $\Pc_G$ decomposes into integral polytopes $\Pc_{G^+}$ and $\Pc_{G^-}$ via a hyperplane. In this paper, we explore various aspects of decomposition of $\Pc_G$: we give an algorithm deciding the decomposability of $\Pc_G$, we prove that $\Pc_G$ is normal if and only if both $\Pc_{G^+}$ and $\Pc_{G^-}$ are normal, and we also study how a condition on the toric ideal of $\Pc_G$ (namely, the ideal being generated by quadratic binomials) beha…
We study the root polytope $\mathcal P_Φ$ of a finite irreducible crystallographic root system $Φ$ using its relation with the abelian ideals of a Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra with root system $Φ$. We determine the hyperplane arrangement corresponding to the faces of codimension 2 of $\mathcal P_Φ$ and analyze its relation with the facets of $\mathcal P_Φ$. For $Φ$ of type $A_n$ or $C_n$, we show that the orbits of some special subsets of abelian ideals under the action of the Weyl group parametrize a triangulation of $\mathcal P_Φ$. We show that this triangulation restricts to a t…
Given a linear space L in affine space A^n, we study its closure L' in the product of projective lines (P^1)^n. We show that the degree, multigraded Betti numbers, defining equations, and universal Grobner basis of its defining ideal I(L') are all combinatorially determined by the matroid M of L. We also prove I(L') and all of its initial ideals are Cohen-Macaulay with the same Betti numbers. In so doing, we prove that the initial ideals of I(L') are the Stanley-Reisner ideals of an interesting family of simplicial complexes related to the basis activities of M. We also describe the state poly…
We give a combinatorial description of the toric ideal of invariants of the Cavender-Farris-Neyman model with a molecular clock (CFN-MC) on a rooted binary phylogenetic tree and prove results about the polytope associated to this toric ideal. Key results about the polyhedral structure include that the number of vertices of this polytope is a Fibonacci number, the facets of the polytope can be described using the combinatorial "cluster" structure of the underlying rooted tree, and the volume is equal to an Euler zig-zag number. The toric ideal of invariants of the CFN-MC model has a quadratic G…
The uniform probability measure on a convex polytope induces piecewise polynomial densities on its projections. For a fixed combinatorial type of simplicial polytopes, the moments of these measures are rational functions in the vertex coordinates. We study projective varieties that are parametrized by finite collections of such rational functions. Our focus lies on determining the prime ideals of these moment varieties. Special cases include Hankel determinantal ideals for polytopal splines on line segments, and the relations among multisymmetric functions given by the cumulants of a simplex. …
In combinatorial commutative algebra and algebraic statistics many toric ideals are constructed from graphs. Keeping the categorical structure of graphs in mind we give previous results a more functorial context and generalize them by introducing the ideals of graph homomorphisms. For this new class of ideals we investigate how the topology of the graphs influence the algebraic properties. We describe explicit Grobner bases for several classes, generalizing results by Hibi, Sturmfels and Sullivant. One of our main tools is the toric fiber product, and we employ results by Engstrom, Kahle and S…
Combinatorial neural codes are $0/1$ vectors that are used to model the co-firing patterns of a set of place cells in the brain. One wide-open problem in this area is to determine when a given code can be algorithmically drawn in the plane as a Venn diagram-like figure. A sufficient condition to do so is for the code to have a property called $k$-inductively pierced. Gross, Obatake, and Youngs recently used toric algebra to show that a code on three neurons is $1$-inductively pierced if and only if the toric ideal is trivial or generated by quadratics. No result is known for additional neurons…
The order polytope $\mathcal{O}(P)$ and the chain polytope $\mathcal{C}(P)$ associated to a partially ordered set $P$ are studied. In this paper, we introduce the convex polytope $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$ which is the convex hull of $\mathcal{O}(P) \cup (-\mathcal{C}(Q))$, where both $P$ and $Q$ are partially ordered sets with $|P|=|Q|=d$. It will be shown that $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$ is a normal and Gorenstein Fano polytope by using the theory of reverse lexicographic squarefree initial ideals of toric ideals.
Describing the combinatorial structure of the tropical complex $C$ of a tropical matroid polytope, we obtain a formula for the coarse types of the maximal cells of $C$. Due to the connection between tropical complexes and resolutions of monomial ideals, this yields the generators for the corresponding coarse type ideal introduced in a recent paper of Dochtermann, Joswig and Sanyal (2010, preprint arXiv.org:1001.0237). Furthermore, a complete description of the minimal tropical halfspaces of the uniform tropical matroid polytopes, i.e. the tropical hypersimplices, is given.
The cut polytope of a graph is an important object in several fields, such as functional analysis, combinatorial optimization, and probability. For example, Sturmfels and Sullivant showed that the toric ideals of cut polytopes are useful in algebraic statistics. In the theory of lattice polytopes, the $h^{*}$-polynomial is one of the most important invariants. The necessary and sufficient condition in terms of graphs that the $h^{*}$-polynomial of a cut polytope is palindromic is known. However, except for trees, there are no classes of graphs for which the $h^{*}$-polynomial of their cut poly…
We prove that among four-dimensional ideal right-angled hyperbolic polytopes the 24-cell is of minimal volume and of minimal facet number. As a corollary, a dimension bound for ideal right-angled hyperbolic polytopes is obtained.
We present a unifying framework in which both the $ν$-Tamari lattice, introduced by Préville-Ratelle and Viennot, and principal order ideals in Young's lattice indexed by lattice paths $ν$, are realized as the dual graphs of two combinatorially striking triangulations of a family of flow polytopes which we call the $ν$-caracol flow polytopes. The first triangulation gives a new geometric realization of the $ν$-Tamari complex introduced by Ceballos, Padrol and Sarmiento. We use the second triangulation to show that the $h^*$-vector of the $ν$-caracol flow polytope is given by the $ν$-Narayana n…
The Groebner fan of an ideal $I\subset k[x_1,...,x_n]$, defined by Mora and Robbiano, is a complex of polyhedral cones in $R^n$. The maximal cones of the fan are in bijection with the distinct monomial initial ideals of $I$ as the term order varies. If $I$ is homogeneous the Groebner fan is complete and is the normal fan of the state polytope of $I$. In general the Groebner fan is not complete and therefore not the normal fan of a polytope. We may ask if the restricted Groebner fan, a subdivision of $R_{>=0}^n$, is regular i.e. the normal fan of a polyhedron. The main result of this paper is a…
Let $X_{P}$ be the projective toric surface associated to a lattice polytope $P$. If the number of lattice points lying on the boundary of $P$ is at least $4$, it is known that $X_{P}$ is embeddable into a suitable projective space as zero set of finitely many quadrics. In this case, the determination of a minimal generating system of the toric ideal defining $X_{P}$ is reduced to a simple Gaussian elimination.
We study the degree of non-homogeneous lattice ideals over arbitrary fields, and give formulae to compute the degree in terms of the torsion of certain factor groups of Z^s and in terms of relative volumes of lattice polytopes. We also study primary decompositions of lattice ideals over an arbitrary field using the Eisenbud-Sturmfels theory of binomial ideals over algebraically closed fields. We then use these results to study certain families of integer matrices (PCB, GPCB, CB, GCB matrices) and the algebra of their corresponding matrix ideals. In particular, the family of generalized positiv…
Let F/Q be number field. The space of positive definite binary Hermitian forms over F form an open cone in a real vector space. There is a natural decomposition of this cone into subcones, which descend give rise to hyperbolic tessellations of 3-dimensional hyperbolic space by ideal polytopes. We compute the structure of these polytopes for a range of imaginary quadratic fields.
We consider the three-state toric homogeneous Markov chain model (THMC) without loops and initial parameters. At time $T$, the size of the design matrix is $6 \times 3\cdot 2^{T-1}$ and the convex hull of its columns is the model polytope. We study the behavior of this polytope for $T\geq 3$ and we show that it is defined by 24 facets for all $T\ge 5$. Moreover, we give a complete description of these facets. From this, we deduce that the toric ideal associated with the design matrix is generated by binomials of degree at most 6. Our proof is based on a result due to Sturmfels, who gave a boun…
