Few-shot object detection is a challenging but realistic scenario, where only a few annotated training images are available for training detectors. A popular approach to handle this problem is transfer learning, i.e., fine-tuning a detector pretrained on a source-domain benchmark. However, such transferred detector often fails to recognize new objects in the target domain, due to low data diversity of training samples. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel Context-Transformer within a concise deep transfer framework. Specifically, Context-Transformer can effectively leverage source-domain object knowledge as guidance, and automatically exploit contexts from only a few training images in the target domain. Subsequently, it can adaptively integrate these relational clues to enhance the discriminative power of detector, in order to reduce object confusion in few-shot scenarios. Moreover, Context-Transformer is flexibly embedded in the popular SSD-style detectors, which makes it a plug-and-play module for end-to-end few-shot learning. Finally, we evaluate Context-Transformer on the challenging settings of few-shot detection and incremental few-shot detection. The experimental results show that, our framework outperforms the recent state-of-the-art approaches.

Localization and recognition of less-occurring road objects have been a challenge in autonomous driving applications due to the scarcity of data samples. Few-Shot Object Detection techniques extend the knowledge from existing base object classes to learn novel road objects given few training examples. Popular techniques in FSOD adopt either meta or metric learning techniques which are prone to class confusion and base class forgetting. In this work, we introduce a novel Meta Guided Metric Learner (MGML) to overcome class confusion in FSOD. We re-weight the features of the novel classes higher …

Zero-shot detection (ZSD) is a challenging task where we aim to recognize and localize objects simultaneously, even when our model has not been trained with visual samples of a few target ("unseen") classes. Recently, methods employing generative models like GANs have shown some of the best results, where unseen-class samples are generated based on their semantics by a GAN trained on seen-class data, enabling vanilla object detectors to recognize unseen objects. However, the problem of semantic confusion still remains, where the model is sometimes unable to distinguish between semantically-sim…
Few-shot object detection (FSOD) localizes and classifies objects in an image given only a few data samples. Recent trends in FSOD research show the adoption of metric and meta-learning techniques, which are prone to catastrophic forgetting and class confusion. To overcome these pitfalls in metric learning based FSOD techniques, we introduce Attention Guided Cosine Margin (AGCM) that facilitates the creation of tighter and well separated class-specific feature clusters in the classification head of the object detector. Our novel Attentive Proposal Fusion (APF) module minimizes catastrophic for…

While many deep learning methods have seen significant success in tackling the problem of domain adaptation and few-shot learning separately, far fewer methods are able to jointly tackle both problems in Cross-Domain Few-Shot Learning (CD-FSL). This problem is exacerbated under sharp domain shifts that typify common computer vision applications. In this paper, we present a novel, flexible and effective method to address the CD-FSL problem. Our method, called Score-based Meta Transfer-Learning (SB-MTL), combines transfer-learning and meta-learning by using a MAML-optimized feature encoder and a…

Fully supervised semantic segmentation technologies bring a paradigm shift in scene understanding. However, the burden of expensive labeling cost remains as a challenge. To solve the cost problem, recent studies proposed language model based zero-shot semantic segmentation (L-ZSSS) approaches. In this paper, we address L-ZSSS has a limitation in generalization which is a virtue of zero-shot learning. Tackling the limitation, we propose a language-model-free zero-shot semantic segmentation framework, Spatial and Multi-scale aware Visual Class Embedding Network (SM-VCENet). Furthermore, leveragi…

Few-shot instance segmentation (FSIS) conjoins the few-shot learning paradigm with general instance segmentation, which provides a possible way of tackling instance segmentation in the lack of abundant labeled data for training. This paper presents a Fully Guided Network (FGN) for few-shot instance segmentation. FGN perceives FSIS as a guided model where a so-called support set is encoded and utilized to guide the predictions of a base instance segmentation network (i.e., Mask R-CNN), critical to which is the guidance mechanism. In this view, FGN introduces different guidance mechanisms into t…

Transductive inference is an effective means of tackling the data deficiency problem in few-shot learning settings. A popular transductive inference technique for few-shot metric-based approaches, is to update the prototype of each class with the mean of the most confident query examples, or confidence-weighted average of all the query samples. However, a caveat here is that the model confidence may be unreliable, which may lead to incorrect predictions. To tackle this issue, we propose to meta-learn the confidence for each query sample, to assign optimal weights to unlabeled queries such that…
Currently available benchmarks for few-shot learning (machine learning with few training examples) are limited in the domains they cover, primarily focusing on image classification. This work aims to alleviate this reliance on image-based benchmarks by offering the first comprehensive, public and fully reproducible audio based alternative, covering a variety of sound domains and experimental settings. We compare the few-shot classification performance of a variety of techniques on seven audio datasets (spanning environmental sounds to human-speech). Extending this, we carry out in-depth analys…

As few-shot object detectors are often trained with abundant base samples and fine-tuned on few-shot novel examples, the learned models are usually biased to base classes and sensitive to the variance of novel examples. To address this issue, we propose a meta-learning framework with two novel feature aggregation schemes. More precisely, we first present a Class-Agnostic Aggregation (CAA) method, where the query and support features can be aggregated regardless of their categories. The interactions between different classes encourage class-agnostic representations and reduce confusion between b…

Zero-shot detection (ZSD) is crucial to large-scale object detection with the aim of simultaneously localizing and recognizing unseen objects. There remain several challenges for ZSD, including reducing the ambiguity between background and unseen objects as well as improving the alignment between visual and semantic concept. In this work, we propose a novel framework named Background Learnable Cascade (BLC) to improve ZSD performance. The major contributions for BLC are as follows: (i) we propose a multi-stage cascade structure named Cascade Semantic R-CNN to progressively refine the alignment…
Object detection is a major challenge in computer vision, involving both object classification and object localization within a scene. While deep neural networks have been shown in recent years to yield very powerful techniques for tackling the challenge of object detection, one of the biggest challenges with enabling such object detection networks for widespread deployment on embedded devices is high computational and memory requirements. Recently, there has been an increasing focus in exploring small deep neural network architectures for object detection that are more suitable for embedded d…

Lately, generative adversarial networks (GANs) have been successfully applied to zero-shot learning (ZSL) and achieved state-of-the-art performance. By synthesizing virtual unseen visual features, GAN-based methods convert the challenging ZSL task into a supervised learning problem. However, GAN-based ZSL methods have to train the generator on the seen categories and further apply it to unseen instances. An inevitable issue of such a paradigm is that the synthesized unseen features are prone to seen references and incapable to reflect the novelty and diversity of real unseen instances. In a nu…

Zero-shot and few-shot learning aim to improve generalization to unseen concepts, which are promising in many realistic scenarios. Due to the lack of data in unseen domain, relation modeling between seen and unseen domains is vital for knowledge transfer in these tasks. Most existing methods capture seen-unseen relation implicitly via semantic embedding or feature generation, resulting in inadequate use of relation and some issues remain (e.g. domain shift). To tackle these challenges, we propose a Transferable Graph Generation (TGG) approach, in which the relation is modeled and utilized expl…

This work focuses on tackling the challenging but realistic visual task of Incremental Few-Shot Learning (IFSL), which requires a model to continually learn novel classes from only a few examples while not forgetting the base classes on which it was pre-trained. Our study reveals that the challenges of IFSL lie in both inter-class separation and novel-class representation. Dur to intra-class variation, a novel class may implicitly leverage the knowledge from multiple base classes to construct its feature representation. Hence, simply reusing the pre-trained embedding space could lead to a scat…

Few-shot learning with large-scale, pre-trained language models is a powerful way to answer questions about code, e.g., how to complete a given code example, or even generate code snippets from scratch. The success of these models raises the question whether they could serve as a basis for building a wide range code generation tools. Traditionally, such tools are built manually and separately for each task. Instead, few-shot learning may allow to obtain different tools from a single pre-trained language model by simply providing a few examples or a natural language description of the expected …

Image classification, which classifies images by pre-defined categories, has been the dominant approach to visual representation learning over the last decade. Visual learning through image-text alignment, however, has emerged to show promising performance, especially for zero-shot recognition. We believe that these two learning tasks are complementary, and suggest combining them for better visual learning. We propose a deep fusion method with three adaptations that effectively bridge two learning tasks, rather than shallow fusion through naive multi-task learning. First, we modify the previou…

Using generative models to synthesize visual features from semantic distribution is one of the most popular solutions to ZSL image classification in recent years. The triplet loss (TL) is popularly used to generate realistic visual distributions from semantics by automatically searching discriminative representations. However, the traditional TL cannot search reliable unseen disentangled representations due to the unavailability of unseen classes in ZSL. To alleviate this drawback, we propose in this work a multi-modal triplet loss (MMTL) which utilizes multimodal information to search a disen…

Few-shot image classification is challenging due to the lack of ample samples in each class. Such a challenge becomes even tougher when the number of classes is very large, i.e., the large-class few-shot scenario. In this novel scenario, existing approaches do not perform well because they ignore confusable classes, namely similar classes that are difficult to distinguish from each other. These classes carry more information. In this paper, we propose a biased learning paradigm called Confusable Learning, which focuses more on confusable classes. Our method can be applied to mainstream meta-le…
Softmax activation is commonly used to output the probability distribution over categories based on certain distance metric. In scenarios like one-shot learning, the distance metric is often chosen to be squared Euclidean distance between the query sample and the category prototype. This practice works well in most time. However, we find that choosing squared Euclidean distance may cause distance explosion leading gradients to be extremely sparse in the early stage of back propagation. We term this phenomena as the early sparse gradients problem. Though it doesn't deteriorate the convergence o…

Unsupervised image-to-image translation methods have received a lot of attention in the last few years. Multiple techniques emerged tackling the initial challenge from different perspectives. Some focus on learning as much as possible from several target style images for translations while other make use of object detection in order to produce more realistic results on content-rich scenes. In this work, we assess how a method that has initially been developed for single object translation performs on more diverse and content-rich images. Our work is based on the FUNIT[1] framework and we train…

This paper proposes a new unsupervised zero-shot-learning method named Mutual Information guided Diffusion cross-modality data translation Model (MIDiffusion), which learns to translate the unseen source data to the target domain. Object localisation, in the context of regular images, often depicts objects like people or cars. In these images, there is typically a relatively small number of objects per class, which usually is manageable to annotate. However, outside the setting of regular images, we are often confronted with a different situation. In computational pathology, digitised tissue sections are extremely large images, whose dimensions quickly exceed 250'000x250'000 pixels, where relevant objects, such as tumour cells or lymphocytes can quickly number in the millions. Annotating them all is practically impossib…
This work provides a framework for addressing the problem of supervised domain adaptation with deep models. The main idea is to exploit adversarial learning to learn an embedded subspace that simultaneously maximizes the confusion between two domains while semantically aligning their embedding. The supervised setting becomes attractive especially when there are only a few target data samples that need to be labeled. In this few-shot learning scenario, alignment and separation of semantic probability distributions is difficult because of the lack of data. We found that by carefully designing a …
Few-shot segmentation (FSS) aims to segment objects of unseen classes given only a few annotated support images. Most existing methods simply stitch query features with independent support prototypes and segment the query image by feeding the mixed features to a decoder. Although significant improvements have been achieved, existing methods are still face class biases due to class variants and background confusion. In this paper, we propose a joint framework that combines more valuable class-aware and class-agnostic alignment guidance to facilitate the segmentation. Specifically, we design a h…

Our approach, named Dual Progressive Prototype Network (DPPN), constructs two types of prototypes that record prototypical visual patterns for attributes and categories, respectively. With attribute prototypes, DPPN alternately sear…
