This paper presents an indoor pose estimation system for micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) with a single WiFi access point. Conventional approaches based on computer vision are limited by illumination conditions and environmental texture. Our system is free of visual limitations and instantly deployable, working upon existing WiFi infrastructure without any deployment cost. Our system consists of two coupled modules. First, we propose an angle-of-arrival (AoA) estimation algorithm to estimate MAV attitudes and disentangle the AoA for positioning. Second, we formulate a WiFi-inertial sensor fusion model that fuses the AoA and the odometry measured by inertial sensors to optimize MAV poses. Considering the practicality of MAVs, our system is designed to be real-time and initialization-free for the need of agile flight in unknown environments. The indoor experiments show that our system achieves the accuracy of pose estimation with the position error of $61.7$ cm and the attitude error of $0.92^\circ$.
Personal indoor localization is usually accomplished by fusing information from various sensors. A common choice is to use the WiFi adapter that provides information about Access Points that can be found in the vicinity. Unfortunately, state-of-the-art approaches to WiFi-based localization often employ very dense maps of the WiFi signal distribution, and require a time-consuming process of parameter selection. On the other hand, camera images are commonly used for visual place recognition, detecting whenever the user observes a scene similar to the one already recorded in a database. Visual pl…

We address the indoor localization problem, where the goal is to predict user's trajectory from the data collected by their smartphone, using inertial sensors such as accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer, as well as other environment and network sensors such as barometer and WiFi. Our system implements a deep learning based pedestrian dead reckoning (deep PDR) model that provides a high-rate estimation of the relative position of the user. Using Kalman Filter, we correct the PDR's drift using WiFi that provides a prediction of the user's absolute position each time a WiFi scan is received…

The paper proposes a multi-modal sensor fusion algorithm that fuses WiFi, IMU, and floorplan information to infer an accurate and dense location history in indoor environments. The algorithm uses 1) an inertial navigation algorithm to estimate a relative motion trajectory from IMU sensor data; 2) a WiFi-based localization API in industry to obtain positional constraints and geo-localize the trajectory; and 3) a convolutional neural network to refine the location history to be consistent with the floorplan. We have developed a data acquisition app to build a new dataset with WiFi, IMU, and floo…

Fingerprinting is a popular indoor localization technique since it can utilize existing infrastructures (e.g., access points). However, its site survey process is a labor-intensive and time-consuming task, which limits the application of such systems in practice. In this paper, motivated by the availability of advanced sensing capabilities in smartphones, we propose a fast and reliable fingerprint collection method to reduce the time and labor required for site survey. The proposed method uses a landmark graph-based method to automatically associate the collected fingerprints, which does not r…

Using WiFi signals for indoor localization is the main localization modality of the existing personal indoor localization systems operating on mobile devices. WiFi fingerprinting is also used for mobile robots, as WiFi signals are usually available indoors and can provide rough initial position estimate or can be used together with other positioning systems. Currently, the best solutions rely on filtering, manual data analysis, and time-consuming parameter tuning to achieve reliable and accurate localization. In this work, we propose to use deep neural networks to significantly lower the work-…

The Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) like GPS suffer from accuracy degradation and are almost unavailable in indoor environments. Indoor positioning systems (IPS) based on WiFi signals have been gaining popularity. However, owing to the strong spatial and temporal variations of wireless communication channels in the indoor environment, the achieved accuracy of existing IPS is around several tens of centimeters. We present the detailed design and implementation of a self-adaptive WiFi-based indoor distance estimation system using LSTMs. The system is novel in its method of estimating …

Recent interest towards autonomous navigation and exploration robots for indoor applications has spurred research into indoor Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) robot systems. While most of these SLAM systems use Visual and LiDAR sensors in tandem with an odometry sensor, these odometry sensors drift over time. To combat this drift, Visual SLAM systems deploy compute and memory intensive search algorithms to detect `Loop Closures', which make the trajectory estimate globally consistent. To circumvent these resource (compute and memory) intensive algorithms, we present ViWiD, which in…
This report proposes a combined optimal control and perception framework for Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) autonomous navigation in novel indoor enclosed environments, relying exclusively on on-board sensor data. We use privileged information from a simulator to generate optimal waypoints in 3D space that our perception system learns to imitate. The trained learning based perception module in turn is able to generate similar obstacle avoiding waypoints from sensor data (RGB + IMU) alone. We demonstrate the efficacy of the framework across novel scenes in the iGibson simulation environment.

An autonomous indoor aerial vehicle requires reliable simul- taneous localization and mapping (SLAM), accurate flight control, and robust path planning for navigation. This paper presents a system level combination of these existing technologies for 2D navigation. An Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) called URSA (Unmanned Recon and Safety Aircraft) that can autonomously flight and mapping indoors environments with an accuracy of 2 cm was developed. Performance in indoor environments was assessed in terms of mapping and navigation precision.

Autonomous robots operating in indoor and GPS denied environments can use LiDAR for SLAM instead. However, LiDARs do not perform well in geometrically-degraded environments, due to the challenge of loop closure detection and computational load to perform scan matching. Existing WiFi infrastructure can be exploited for localization and mapping with low hardware and computational cost. Yet, accurate pose estimation using WiFi is challenging as different signal values can be measured at the same location due to the unpredictability of signal propagation. Therefore, we introduce the use of WiFi fi…
Aerial navigation in GPS-denied, indoor environments, is still an open challenge. Drones can perceive the environment from a richer set of viewpoints, while having more stringent compute and energy constraints than other autonomous platforms. To tackle that problem, this research displays a biologically inspired deep-learning algorithm for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) and its application in a drone navigation system. We propose an unsupervised representation learning method that yields low-dimensional latent state descriptors, that mitigates the sensitivity to perceptual aliasi…

The task assigned to the UAV was to reach the goal position in the shortest amount of time without colliding with any obstacles. Reinforcement learning was performed in a virtual environment created using Gazebo, a virtual environment simulator, to reduce the learning time and cost. Curriculum learning, which consists of two stages was performed for more efficient learning. As a result of learning with two reward mod…
This paper addresses the issues of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) indoor navigation, specifically in areas where GPS and magnetometer sensor measurements are unavailable or unreliable. The proposed solution is to use an error state extended Kalman filter (ES -EKF) in the context of multi-sensor fusion. Its implementation is adapted to fuse measurements from multiple sensor sources and the state model is extended to account for sensor drift and possible calibration inaccuracies. Experimental validation is performed by fusing IMU data obtained from the PixHawk 2.1 flight controller with pose meas…

Multi-agent reinforcement learning was performed in this study for indoor path planning of two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Each UAV performed the task of moving as fast as possible from a randomly paired initial position to a goal position in an environment with obstacles. To minimize training time and prevent the damage of UAVs, learning was performed by simulation. Considering the non-stationary characteristics of the multi-agent environment wherein the optimal behavior varies based on the actions of other agents, the action of the other UAV was also included in the state space of each …

WiFi technology has been used pervasively in fine-grained indoor localization, gesture recognition, and adaptive communication. Achieving better performance in these tasks generally boils down to differentiating Line-Of-Sight (LOS) from Non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) signal propagation reliably which generally requires expensive/specialized hardware due to the complex nature of indoor environments. Hence, the development of low-cost accurate positioning systems that exploit available infrastructure is not entirely solved. In this paper, we develop a framework for indoor localization and tracking of …
Indoor localization for autonomous micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) requires specific localization techniques, since the Global Positioning System (GPS) is usually not available. We present an efficient onboard computer vision approach that estimates 2D positions of an MAV in real-time. This global localization system does not suffer from error accumulation over time and uses a $k$-Nearest Neighbors ($k$-NN) algorithm to predict positions based on textons---small characteristic image patches that capture the texture of an environment. A particle filter aggregates the estimates and resolves positio…

In particular, we target a fleet of robots for collaborative tasks with humans, such as telepresence and cooperative mobile manipulation. We explore a propeller based propulsion system, arranged in such a way that the translational and the rotational components can be decoupled, resulting in an holonomic hexarotor. We present a range-based solution for indoor relative localization by Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs), achieving sufficient accuracy for leader-follower flight. Moving forward from previous work, we removed the dependency on a common heading measurement by the MAVs, making the relative localization accuracy independent of magnetometer readings. We found that this restricts the relative maneuvers that guarantee observability, and also that higher accuracy range measurements are required to rectify the missing heading information, yet both disadvantages can be tackled. Our implementation uses Ultra Wi…
