Bessel Beams

Scalar Bessel beams are derived both via the wave equation and via diffraction theory. While such beams have a group velocity that exceeds the speed of light, this is a manifestation of the "scissors paradox" of special relativty. The signal velocity of a modulated Bessel beam is less than the speed of light. Forms of Bessel beams that satisfy Maxwell's equations are also given.

Self-healing of Gaussian and Bessel beams: a critical comparison

Contrarily to a common belief, any beam of light possesses to a some extent the ability to "reconstruct itself" after hitting an obstacle. The celebrated Arago spot phenomenon is nothing but a manifestation of this property. In this work we analyze the self-healing mechanism from both a mathematical and a physical point of view, eventually finding a new expression for the minimum reconstruction distance, which is valid for \emph{any} kind of beam, including Gaussian ones. Extremely high-aspect-ratio ultrafast Bessel beam generation and stealth dicing of multi-millimeter thick glass

We report on the development of an ultrafast beam shaper capable of generating Bessel beams of high cone angle that maintain a high-intensity hot spot with subwavelength diameter over a propagation distance in excess of 8~mm. This generates a high-intensity focal region with extremely high aspect ratio exceeding 10~000:1. The absence of intermediate focusing in the shaper allows for shaping very high energies, up to Joule levels. Stabilization of vortex beams in Kerr media by nonlinear absorption

We elaborate a new solution for the problem of stable propagation of transversely localized vortex beams in homogeneous optical media with self-focusing Kerr nonlinearity. Stationary nonlinear Bessel-vortex states are stabilized against azimuthal breakup and collapse by multiphoton absorption, while the respective power loss is offset by the radial influx of the power from an intrinsic reservoir. Motion Induced by Light: Photokinetic Effects in the Rayleigh Limit

Structured beams of light can move small objects in surprising ways. Particularly striking examples include observations of polarization-dependent forces acting on optically isotropic objects and tractor beams that can pull objects opposite to the direction of the light's propagation.
