The concept of Fermi liquid lays a solid cornerstone to the understanding of electronic correlations in quantum matter. This ordered many-body state rigorously organizes electrons at zero temperature in progressively higher momentum states, up to the Fermi surface. As such, it displays rigidity against perturbations. Such rigidity generates Fermi-surface resonances which manifest as longitudinal and transverse collective modes. Although these Fermi-liquid collective modes have been analyzed and observed in electrically neutral liquid helium, they remain unexplored in charged solid-state systems up to date. In this paper I analyze the transverse shear response of charged three-dimensional Fermi liquids as a function of temperature, excitation frequency and momentum, for interactions expressed in terms of the first symmetric Landau parameter. I consider the effect of momentum-conserving quasiparticle collisions and momentum-relaxing scattering in relaxation-time approximation on the coupling between photons and Fermi-surface collective modes, thus deriving the Fermi-liquid optical conductivity and dielectric function. In the high-frequency, long-wavelength excitation regime the electrodynamic response entails two coherent and frequency-degenerate polaritons, and its spatial nonlocality is encoded by a frequency- and interaction-dependent generalized shear modulus; in the opposite high-momentum low-frequency regime anomalous skin effect takes place. I identify observable signatures of propagating shear collective modes in optical spectroscopy experiments, with applications to the surface impedance and the optical transmission of thin films.
We study the appearance of a sharp collective mode which features transverse current fluctuations within the bosonization approach to interacting two-dimensional Fermi liquids. This mode is analogous to the shear sound modes in elastic media, and, unlike the conventional zero sound mode, it is damped in weakly interacting Fermi liquids and only separates away from the particle-hole continuum when the quasiparticle mass becomes twice the transport mass $m^* \gtrsim 2 m$. The shear sound should be present in a large class of interacting charged and neutral Fermi liquids especially those proximat…
Spin liquids may host emergent quasiparticles, collective excitations of the spin degrees of freedom with characteristic features of Majorana fermions, which experimentally are detectable by broad excitation continua due to spin fractionalization. The latter is predicted for the Kitaev spin liquid, an exactly solvable model with bond-dependent interactions on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. Here we report on detailed THz experiments in α-RuCl3, identifying these characteristic fingerprints of Majorana fermions. The continuum intensity decreases and finally vanishes on increasing temperatu…
Introducing both the Berry curvature and chiral anomaly into the Landau's Fermi-liquid theory, we investigate collective dynamics of Fermi-surface fluctuations and reveal their instabilities in an interacting Weyl metal phase with broken time reversal symmetry. Based on the Boltzmann-equation framework, we find criteria for the stability of the topological Fermi-liquid state as a function of forward scattering Landau's interaction parameters and the distance of a pair of Weyl points given by an external magnetic field. In addition to these instability criteria for general angular momentum chan…
A highlight of Fermi-liquid phenomenology, as explored in neutral $^3$He, is the observation that in the collisionless regime shear stress propagates as if one is dealing with the transverse phonon of a solid. The existence of this $"$transverse zero sound$"$ requires that the quasiparticle mass enhancement exceeds a critical value. Could such a propagating shear stress also exist in strongly correlated electron systems? Despite some noticeable differences with the neutral case in the Galilean continuum, we arrive at the verdict that transverse zero sound should be generic. We present an exper…
Shear viscosity and spin diffusion in a two-dimensional Fermi gas
Rev. Lett. 108,070404(2012)]。
Semi-holographic models of non-Fermi liquids have been shown to have generically stable generalised quasi-particles on the Fermi surface. Although these excitations are broad and exhibit particle-hole asymmetry, they were argued to be stable from interactions at the Fermi surface. In this work, we use this observation to compute the density response and collective behaviour in these systems. Compared to the Fermi liquid case, we find that the boundaries of the particle-hole continuum are blurred by incoherent contributions. However, there is a region inside this continuum, that we call inner c…
The hydrodynamic description of the Fermi arc surface states is proposed. In view of the strong suppression of scattering on impurities, the hydrodynamic regime for Fermi arc states should be, in principle, plausible. By using the kinetic theory, the Fermi arc hydrodynamics is derived and the corresponding effects on the bulk flow and surface collective modes are studied. For the bulk flow, the key effect of the proposed Fermi arc hydrodynamics is the modification of the corresponding boundary conditions. In a slab geometry, it is shown that, depending on the transfer rates between the surface…
We measure collective excitations of a harmonically trapped two-dimensional (2D) SU($N$) Fermi gas of $^{173}$Yb confined to a stack of layers formed by a one-dimensional optical lattice. Quadrupole and breathing modes are excited and monitored in the collisionless regime $\lvert\ln(k_F a_{2D})\rvert\gg 1$ with tunable spin. We observe that the quadrupole mode frequency decreases with increasing number of spin components due to the amplification of the interaction effect by $N$ in agreement with a theoretical prediction based on 2D kinetic equations. The breathing mode frequency, however, is m…
