The aim of this paper is to exploit the structure of strongly continuous operator semigroups in order to formulate a categorical framework in which a fresh perspective can be applied to past operator theoretic results. In particular, we investigate the inverse-producing Arens extension for Banach algebras (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 88:536-548, 1958) adapted for operators and operator semigroups by Batty and Geyer (J. Operator Theory 78(2):473-500, 2017) in this new framework, asking and answering questions using categorical language. We demonstrate that the Arens extension defines an extension functor in this setting and that it forms an adjunction with the suitably defined forgetful functor. As a by-product of this categorical framework, we also revisit the work on Banach direct sums by Lachowicz and Moszyński (Semigroup Forum 93(1):34-70, 2016). This paper can be considered as a brief exploration of the triple interface between operator semigroups, Banach algebras, and category theory.
This paper considers discrete and continuous semigroups of (weighted) composition operators on the Fock space. For discrete semigroups consisting of powers of a single operator, the asymptotic behaviour of the semigroups is analysed. For continuous semigroups and groups, a full classification of possible semigroups is given, and the generator is calculated.
We show well-posedness for an evolution problem associated with the Dirichlet-to-Robin operator for certain Robin boundary data. Moreover, it turns out that the semigroup generated by the Dirichlet-to-Robin operator is closely related to a weighted semigroup of composition operators on an appropriate Banach space of analytic functions.
Let $A$ be a bounded linear operator and $P$ a bounded linear projection on a Banach space $X$. We show that the operator semigroup $(e^{t(A-kP)})_{t \ge 0}$ converges to a semigroup on a subspace of $X$ as $k \to \infty$ and we compute the limit semigroup.
Avicou, Chalendar and Partington proved that an (unbounded) operator $(Af)=G\cdot f'$ on the classical Hardy space generates a $C_0$ semigroup of composition operators if and only if it generates a quasicontractive semigroup. Here we prove that if such an operator $A$ generates a $C_0$ semigroup, then it is automatically a semigroup of composition operators, so that the condition of quasicontractivity of the semigroup in the cited result is not necessary. Our result applies to a rather general class of Banach spaces of analytic functions in the unit disc.
The goal of this article is to develop a theory for direct integrals of $C_0$-semigroups on Hilbert spaces parallel to the recent approach by Lachowicz and Moszyński for direct sums of Banach spaces, diagonal operators, and semigroups. In it we deal with the existence and characterisation of semigroups, asymptotic rates, and questions of decomposability.
In this paper we study the stability properties of strongly continuous semigroups generated by block operator matrices. We consider triangular and full operator matrices whose diagonal operator blocks generate polynomially stable semigroups. As our main results, we present conditions under which also the semigroup generated by the operator matrix is polynomially stable. The theoretic results are applied to deriving conditions for the polynomial stability of a system consisting of a two-dimensional and a one-dimensional damped wave equations.
We give extensions of results on nonnegative matrix semigroups which deduce finiteness or boundedness of such semigroups from the corresponding local properties, e.g., from finiteness or boundedness of values of certain linear functionals applied to them. We also consider more general semigroups of functions.
Let $Ω$ be an operator semigroup with generator $A$ in a sequentially complete locally convex topological vector space $E$. For a semigroup with generator $A+D$, where $D$ is a bounded linear operator on $E$, two integral equations are derived. A theorem on continuous dependence of a semigroup on its generator is proved. An application to random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ is given.
We show that for every supercyclic strongly continuous operator semigroup ${T_t}_{t\geq 0}$ acting on a complex $\F$-space, every $T_t$ with $t>0$ is supercyclic. Moreover, the set of supercyclic vectors of each $T_t$ with $t>0$ is exactly the set of supercyclic vectors of the entire semigroup.
We systematize and generalize recent results of Gerlach and Glück on the strong convergence and spectral theory of bounded (positive) operator semigroups $(T_s)_{s\in S}$ on Banach spaces (lattices). (Here, $S$ can be an arbitrary commutative semigroup, and no topological assumptions neither on $S$ nor on its representation are required.) To this aim, we introduce the "semigroup at infinity" and give useful criteria ensuring that the well-known Jacobs--de Leeuw--Glicksberg splitting theory can be applied to it. Next, we confine these abstract results to positive semigroups on Banach lattices w…
We consider positive operator semigroups on ordered Banach spac\-es and study the relation of their long time behaviour to two different domination properties. First, we analyse under which conditions almost periodicity and mean ergodicity of a semigroup $\mathcal{T}$ are inherited by other semigroups which are asymptotically dominated by $\mathcal{T}$. Then, we consider semigroups whose orbits asymptotically dominate a positive vector and show that this assumption is often sufficient to conclude strong convergence of the semigroup as time tends to infinity. Our theorems are applicable to time…
We investigate uniform, strong, weak and almost weak stability of multiplication semigroups on Banach space valued $L^p$-spaces. We show that, under certain conditions, these properties can be characterized by analogous ones of the pointwise semigroups. Using techniques from selector theory, we prove a spectral mapping theorem for the point spectra of the pointwise and global semigroups and apply this as a major tool for determining almost weak stability.
We study linear operators $T$ on Banach spaces for which there exists a $C_0$-semigroup $(T(t))_{t\geq 0}$ such that $T=T(1)$. We present a necessary condition in terms of the spectral value 0 and give classes of examples where this can or cannot be achieved.
We consider continuous semigroups of analytic functions $\{Φ_t\}_{t\geq0}$ in the so-called Gordon-Hedenmalm class $\mathcal{G}$, that is, the family of analytic functions $Φ:\mathbb C_+\to \mathbb C_+$ giving rise to bounded composition operators in the Hardy space of Dirichlet series $\mathcal{H}^2$. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between continuous semigroups $\{Φ_{t}\}_{t\geq0}$ in the class $\mathcal G$ and strongly continuous semigroups of composition operators $\{T_t\}_{t\geq0}$, where $T_t(f)=f\circΦ_t$, $f\in\mathcal{H}^2$. We extend these results for the range $p\i…
We describe a class of topological vector spaces admitting a mixing uniformly continuous operator group ${T_t}_{t\in\C^n}$ with holomorphic dependence on the parameter $t$. This result covers those existing in the literature. We also describe a class of topological vector spaces admitting no supercyclic strongly continuous operator semigroups ${T_t}_{t\geq 0}$.
We generalize results concerning $\mathrm{C}_0$-semigroups on Banach lattices to a setting of ordered Banach spaces. We prove that the generator of a disjointness preserving $\mathrm{C}_0$-semigroup is local. Some basic properties of local operators are also given. We investigate cases where local operators generate local $\mathrm{C}_0$-semigroups, by using Taylor series or Yosida approximations. As norms we consider regular norms and show that bands are closed with respect to such norms. Our proofs rely on the theory of embedding pre-Riesz spaces in vector lattices and on corresponding extens…
If $(T_t)$ is a semigroup of Markov operators on an $L^1$-space that admits a non-trivial lower bound, then a well-known theorem of Lasota and Yorke asserts that the semigroup is strongly convergent as $t \to \infty$. In this article we generalise and improve this result in several respects. First, we give a new and very simple proof for the fact that the same conclusion also holds if the semigroup is merely assumed to be bounded instead of Markov. As a main result we then prove a version of this theorem for semigroups which only admit certain individual lower bounds. Moreover, we generalise a…
We prove that in a large class of Banach spaces of analytic functions in the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ an (unbounded) operator $Af=G\cdot f'+g\cdot f$ with $G,\, g$ analytic in $\mathbb{D}$ generates a $C_0$-semigroup of weighted composition operators if and only if it generates a $C_0$-semigroup. Particular instances of such spaces are the classical Hardy spaces. Our result generalizes previous results in this context and it is related to cocycles of flows of analytic functions on Banach spaces. Likewise, for a large class of non-separable Banach spaces $X $ of analytic functions in $\mathbb{D}$…
M. Embry and A. Lambert initiated the study of a semigroup of operators $\{S_t\}$ indexed by a non-negative real number $t$ and termed it as weighted translation semigroup. The operators $S_t$ are defined on $L^2(\mathbb R_+)$ by using a weight function. The operator $S_t$ can be thought of as a continuous analogue of a weighted shift operator. In this paper, we show that every left invertible operator $S_t$ can be modeled as a multiplication by $z$ on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\cal H$ of vector-valued analytic functions on a certain disc centered at the origin and the reproducing ke…
Let (H_t) be the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup on R^d with covariance matrix I and drift matrix λ(R-I), where λ>0 and R is a skew-adjoint matrix and denote by γ_\infty the invariant measure for (H_t). Semigroups of this form are the basic building blocks of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroups which are normal on L^2(γ_\infty). We prove that if the matrix R generates a one-parameter group of periodic rotations then the maximal operator associated to the semigroup is of weak type 1 with respect to the invariant measure. We also prove that the maximal operator associated to an arbitrary normal Ornstein-…
Given a positive, irreducible and bounded C_0-semigroup on a Banach lattice with order continuous norm, we prove that the peripheral point spectrum of its generator is trivial whenever one of its operators dominates a non-trivial compact or kernel operator. For a discrete semigroup, i.e. for powers of a single operator T, we show that the point spectrum of some power T^k intersects the unit circle at most in 1. As a consequence, we obtain a sufficient condition for strong convergence of the C_0-semigroup and for a subsequence of the powers of T, respectively.
We study a semigroup $ϕ$ of linear operators acting on a Banach space $X$ which satisfies the condition $\codim X_0<\infty$, where $X_0=\{x\in X \mid ϕ_t(x)\underset{t\to\infty}\longrightarrow 0\}.$ We show that $X_0$ is closed under these conditions. We establish some properties concerning the asymptotic behavior of subspaces which complement $X_0$ in $X$.
We consider global pseudodifferential operators on symmetric spaces of noncompact type, defined using spherical functions. The associated symbols have a natural probabilistic form that extend the notion of the characteristic exponent appearing in Gangolli's Lévy-Khinchine formula to a function of two variables. The Hille-Yosida-Ray theorem is used to obtain conditions on such a symbol so that the corresponding pseudodifferential operator has an extension that generates a sub-Feller semigroup, generalising existing results for Euclidean space.
We introduce a bivariant version of the Cuntz semigroup as equivalence classes of order zero maps generalizing the ordinary Cuntz semigroup. The theory has many properties formally analogous to KK-theory including a composition product. We establish basic properties, like additivity, stability and continuity, and study categorical aspects in the setting of local C*-algebras. We determine the bivariant Cuntz semigroup for numerous examples such as when the second algebra is a Kirchberg algebra, and Cuntz homology for compact Hausdorff spaces which provides a complete invariant. Moreover, we est…
We study continuity and Hölder continuity of $t\mapsto P_tf$, where $P_t$ is a generalized Mehler semigroup in $C_b(X)$, the space of the continuous and bounded functions from a Banach space $X$ to $R$, and $f\in C_b(X)$. The generators $L$ of such semigroups are realizations of a class of differential and pseudo-differential operators, both in finite and in infinite dimension. Examples of operators $L$ to which this theory is applicable include Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators with fractional diffusion in finite dimension, and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators with associated strong-Feller semigroups,…
We give a new and very short proof of a theorem of Greiner asserting that a positive and contractive $C_0$-semigroup on an $L^p$-space is strongly convergent in case that it has a strictly positive fixed point and contains an integral operator. Our proof is a streamlined version of a much more general approach to the asymptotic theory of positive semigroups developed recently by the authors. Under the assumptions of Greiner's theorem, this approach becomes particularly elegant and simple. We also give an outlook on several generalisations of this result.
The aim of this paper is twofold. On one hand, generalizing some recent results obtained in the quaternionic setting, but using simpler techniques, we prove the generation theorems for semigroups in Banach spaces whose set of scalars belongs to the class of real alternative *-algebras, which includes, besides real and complex numbers, quaternions, octonions and Clifford algebras. On the other hand, in this new general framework, we introduce the notion of spherical sectorial operator and we prove that a spherical sectorial operator generates a semigroup that can be represented by a Cauchy inte…
We present new conditions for semigroups of positive operators to converge strongly as time tends to infinity. Our proofs are based on a novel approach combining the well-known splitting theorem by Jacobs, de Leeuw and Glicksberg with a purely algebraic result about positive group representations. Thus we obtain convergence theorems not only for one-parameter semigroups but for a much larger class of semigroup representations. Our results allow for a unified treatment of various theorems from the literature that, under technical assumptions, a bounded positive $C_0$-semigroup containing or dom…
In this paper we study the main properties of the Cesàro means of bi-continuous semigroups, introduced and studied by Kühnemund in [24]. We also give some applications to Feller semigroups generated by second-order elliptic differential operators with unbounded coefficients in $C_b(\R^N)$ and to evolution operators associated with nonautonomous second-order differential operators in $C_b(\R^N)$ with time-periodic coefficients.
We consider positive semidefinite kernels valued in the $*$-algebra of adjointable operators on a VE-space (Vector Euclidean space) and that are invariant under actions of $*$-semigroups. A rather general dilation theorem is stated and proved: for these kind of kernels, representations of the $*$-semigroup on either the VE-spaces of linearisation of the kernels or on their reproducing kernel VE-spaces are obtainable. We point out the reproducing kernel fabric of dilation theory and we show that the general theorem unifies many dilation results at the non topological level.
The paper is devoted to a linear dynamics for non-autonomous perturbation of the Gibbs semigroup on a separable Hilbert space. It is shown that evolution family {U(t, s)} 0$\le$s$\le$t solving the non-autonomous Cauchy problem can be approximated in the trace-norm topology by product formulae. The rate of convergence of product formulae approximants {U n (t, s)} {0$\le$s$\le$t,n$\ge$1} to the solution operator {U(t, s)} {0$\le$s$\le$t} is also established.
The weighted shift operators turn out to be extremely useful in supplying interesting examples of operators on Hilbert spaces. With a view to study a continuous analogue of weighted shifts, M. In this paper, we continue the work carried out there and obtain characterizations of hyperexpansive weighted translation semigroups in terms of their symb…
We introduce the numerical spectrum $σ_n(A)\subset \mathbb{C}$ of an (unbounded) linear operator $A$ on a Banach space $X$ and study its properties. Our definition is closely related to the numerical range $W(A)$ of $A$ and always yields a superset of $W(A)$. In the case of bounded operators on Hilbert spaces, the two notions coincide. However, unlike the numerical range, $σ_n(A)$ is always closed, convex and contains the spectrum of $A$. In the paper we strongly emphasise the connection of our approach to the theory of $C_0$-semigroups.
In this paper we prove weighted $\ell^p$-inequalities for variation and oscillation operators defined by semigroups of operators associated with discrete Jacobi operators. Also, we establish that certain maximal operators involving sums of differences of discrete Jacobi semigroups are bounded on weighted $\ell^p$-spaces. $\ell^p$-boundedness properties for the considered operators provide information about the convergence of the semigroup of operators defining them.
This paper considers universal Hilbert space operators in the sense of Rota, and gives criteria for universality of semigroups in the context of uniformly continuous semigroups and contraction semigroups. Specific examples are given. Universal semigroups provide models for these classes of semigroups: following a line of research initiated by Shimorin, models for concave semigroups are developed, in terms of shifts on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.
In this paper, we derive the $L^p$-boundedness of the variation operators associated with the heat semigroup which is generated by the high order Schrödinger type operator $(-Δ)^2+V^2$. Further more, we prove the boundedness of the variation operators on Morrey spaces. In the proof of the main results, we always make use of the variation inequalities associated with the heat semigroup generated by the biharmonic operator $(-Δ)^2.$
We identify the semigroups consisting of bounded composition operators on the Hardy spaces $H^p(\U)$ of the upper half-plane. We show that any such semigroup is strongly continuous on $H^p(\U)$ but not uniformly continuous and we identify the infinitesimal generator.
We define strongly continuous max-additive and max-plus linear operator semigroups and study their main properties. We present some important examples of such semigroups coming from non-linear evolution equations.
Analytic Morrey spaces belong to the class of function spaces which, like BMOA, are defined in terms of the degree of oscillation on the boundary of functions analytic in the unit disc. We consider semigroups of composition operators on these spaces and focus on the question of strong continuity. It is shown that these semigroups behave like on BMOA.
We establish spectral inclusion and mapping theorems for scalar type spectral operators, generalizing their counterparts for normal operators. Thereby, we extend a precise weak spectral mapping theorem, known to hold for $C_0$-semigroups of normal operators on complex Hilbert spaces, to the more general case of $C_0$-semigroups of scalar type spectral operators on complex Banach spaces. The finer spectrum structure is given itemized consideration.
Inspired by topological Wiener-Wintner theorems we study the mean ergodicity of amenable semigroups of Markov operators on $C(K)$ and show the connection to the convergence of strong and weak ergodic nets. The results are then used to characterize mean ergodicity of Koopman semigroups corresponding to skew product actions on compact group extensions.
We give an overview of the F-product construction and the corresponding nonstandard constructions for strongly continuous one-parameter semigroups of linear operators, and show that (in the case of bounded ultrapowers) both constructs are isomorphic. From this we also deduce a "classical" corollary about the nonexistace of certain semigroups.
We prove a Weiss conjecture on $β$-admissibility of control and observation operators for discrete and continuous $γ$-hypercontractive semigroups of operators, by representing them in terms of shifts on weighted Bergman spaces and using a reproducing kernel thesis for Hankel operators. Particular attention is paid to the case $γ=2$, which corresponds to the unweighted Bergman shift.
We study the strong continuity of weighted composition semigroups of the form $T_tf=φ_t'\left(f\circφ_t\right)$ in several spaces of analytic functions. First we give a general result on separable spaces and use it to prove that these semigroups are always strongly continuous in the Hardy and Bergman spaces. Then we focus on two non-separable family of spaces, the mixed norm and the weighted Banach spaces. We characterize the maximal subspace in which a semigroup of analytic functions induces a strongly continuous semigroup of weighted composition operators depending on its Denjoy-Wolff point,…
We develop a systematic theory of eventually positive semigroups of linear operators mainly on spaces of continuous functions. By eventually positive we mean that for every positive initial condition the solution to the corresponding Cauchy problem is positive for large enough time. Characterisations of such semigroups are given by means of resolvent properties of the generator and Perron--Frobenius type spectral conditions. We apply these characterisations to prove eventual positivity of several examples of semigroups including some generated by fourth order elliptic operators and a delay dif…
A higher rank numerical semigroup is a positive cone whose seminormalization is isomorphic to the free abelian semigroup. The corresponding nonselfadjoint semigroup algebras are known to provide examples that answer Arveson's Dilation Problem to the negative. Here we show that these algebras share the polydisc as the character space in a canonical way. We subsequently use this feature in order to identify higher rank numerical semigroups from the corresponding nonselfadjoint algebras.
We give a self-contained and streamlined exposition of a generation theorem for C0-semigroups based on the method of boundary triplets. We apply this theorem to port-Hamiltonian systems where we discuss recent results appearing in stability and control theory. We give detailed proofs and require only a basic knowledge of operator and semigroup theory.
The perturbation semigroup was first defined in the case of $*$-algebras by Chamseddine, Connes and van Suijlekom. In this paper, we take $\mathcal{E}$ as a concrete operator system with unit. We first give a definition of gauge group $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{E})$ of $\mathcal{E}$, after that we give the definition of perturbation semigroup of $\mathcal{E}$, and the closed perturbation semigroup of $\mathcal{E}$ with respect to the Haagerup tensor norm. We also show that there is a continuous semigroup homomorphism from the closed perturbation semigroup to the collection of unital completely boun…
