This paper is concerned with the computing efficiency of model predictive control (MPC) problems for dynamical systems with both rate and amplitude constraints on the inputs. Instead of augmenting the decision variables of the underlying finite-horizon optimal control problem to accommodate the input rate constraints, we propose to solve this problem using the fast gradient method (FGM), where the projection step is solved using Dykstra's algorithm. We show that, relative to the Alternating Direction of Method Multipliers (ADMM), this approach greatly reduces the computation time while halving the memory usage. Our algorithm is implemented in C and its performance demonstrated using several examples.
This paper proposes a novel Coordinate-Descent Augmented-Lagrangian (CDAL) solver for linear, possibly parameter-varying, model predictive control (MPC) problems. At each iteration, an augmented Lagrangian (AL) subproblem is solved by coordinate descent (CD), exploiting the structure of the MPC problem. The CDAL solver enjoys three main properties: (i) it is construction-free, in that it avoids explicitly constructing the quadratic programming (QP) problem associated with MPC; (ii) is matrix-free, as it avoids multiplications and factorizations of matrices; and (iii) is library-free, as it can…
This paper proposes an algorithm that combines Fast Moving Horizon Parameter Estimation and Model Predictive Control subject to an observability constraint designed to ensure a lower bound on the performance of the parameter estimator. Output-feedback stability is proved through input-to-state stability of the state/error system under a small noise and initial error assumption. Numerical experiments have been carried out in the case of Active Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM).
First-order optimization solvers, such as the Fast Gradient Method, are increasingly being used to solve Model Predictive Control problems in resource-constrained environments. Unfortunately, the convergence rate of these solvers is significantly affected by the conditioning of the problem data, with ill-conditioned problems requiring a large number of iterations. To reduce the number of iterations required, we present a simple method for computing a horizon-independent preconditioning matrix for the Hessian of the condensed problem. The preconditioner is based on the block Toeplitz structure …
Blackwell approachability is a framework for reasoning about repeated games with vector-valued payoffs. We introduce predictive Blackwell approachability, where an estimate of the next payoff vector is given, and the decision maker tries to achieve better performance based on the accuracy of that estimator. In order to derive algorithms that achieve predictive Blackwell approachability, we start by showing a powerful connection between four well-known algorithms. Follow-the-regularized-leader (FTRL) and online mirror descent (OMD) are the most prevalent regret minimizers in online convex optim…
Many chemical processes exhibit diverse timescale dynamics with a strong coupling between timescale sensitive variables. Model predictive control with a non-uniformly spaced optimisation horizon is an effective approach to multi-timescale control and offers opportunities for reduced computational complexity. In such an approach the fast, moderate and slow dynamics can be included in the optimisation problem by implementing smaller time intervals earlier in the prediction horizon and increasingly larger intervals towards the end of the prediction. In this paper, a reference-flexible condition i…
Incorporating side observations in decision making can reduce uncertainty and boost performance, but it also requires we tackle a potentially complex predictive relationship. While one may use off-the-shelf machine learning methods to separately learn a predictive model and plug it in, a variety of recent methods instead integrate estimation and optimization by fitting the model to directly optimize downstream decision performance. Surprisingly, in the case of contextual linear optimization, we show that the naive plug-in approach actually achieves regret convergence rates that are significant…

We develop an online data-enabled predictive (ODeePC) control method for optimal control of unknown systems, building on the recently proposed DeePC [1]. Our proposed ODeePC method leverages a primal-dual algorithm with real-time measurement feedback to iteratively compute the corresponding real-time optimal control policy as system conditions change. The proposed ODeePC conceptual-wise resembles standard adaptive system identification and model predictive control (MPC), but it provides a new alternative for the standard methods. ODeePC is enabled by computationally efficient methods that expl…
