We consider the generic problem of a two-level quantum emitter near a two-dimensional Chern insulator in the dipole approximation, and study how the frequency-dependent response and electronic density of states of the insulator modifies the transition rate of the emitter between the ground and excited levels. To this end, we obtain the full real-frequency behavior of the conductivity tensor by performing a tight-binding calculation based on the Qi-Wu-Zhang model and using a Kubo formula, and derive the full electromagnetic Green tensor of the system, which breaks Onsager reciprocity. This enables us to find that for frequencies smaller than the maximum band gap, the system is sensitive to time reversal symmetry-breaking, whereas for much larger frequencies the system becomes insensitive, with implications for the discrimination of the state of a circularly polarised dipole emitter. We also study the impact of a van Hove singularity on the surface-induced correction to the transition rate, finding that it can enhance its amplitude by a few orders of magnitude compared to the case where the conductivity is set to its static value. By considering configurations in which the dipole is circularly polarised or parallel with the surface of the Chern insulator, we find that the surface correction to the transition rate can exhibit a novel decay with sine integral-like oscillations.
The Hofstadter butterfly is a quantum fractal with a highly complex nested set of gaps, where each gap represents a quantum Hall state whose quantized conductivity is characterized by topological invariants known as the Chern numbers. Here we obtain simple rules to determine the Chern numbers at all scales in the butterfly fractal and lay out a very detailed topological map of the butterfly. Our study reveals the existence of a set of critical points, each corresponding to a macroscopic annihilation of orderly patterns of both the positive and the negative Cherns that appears as a fine structu…
In this work we discuss particular effects that take place in systems of quantum emitters coupled to two-dimensional bosonic topological insulators. For a single emitter coupled to the Haldane model, we find a "fragile" quasibound state that makes the emitter dynamics very sensitive to the model's parameters, and gives rise to effective long-range interactions that break time-reversal symmetry. We then discuss one-dimensional arrangements of emitters, emitter line defects, and how the topology of the bath affects the effective polariton models that appear in the weak-coupling regime when the e…
We consider the resonant Casimir-Polder interaction of an excited alkali-type atom which has a single (electric dipole) transition with a Chern insulator. The Chern insulator has a nonzero, time reversal symmetry breaking Hall conductance, leading to an additional contribution to the resonant Casimir-Polder interaction which depends on the coupling between the Hall conductance and the circular polarization state of the atomic transition. We find that the resonant Casimir-Polder shift can be significantly enhanced for de-excitation frequencies near values associated with the van Hove singularit…
Saddle-point van Hove singularities in the topological surface states are interesting because they can provide a new pathway for accessing exotic correlated phenomena in topological materials. Here, based on first-principles calculations combined with a $\mathbf {k \cdot p}$ model Hamiltonian analysis, we show that the layered platinum mineral jacutingaite (Pt$_2$HgSe$_3$) harbours saddle-like topological surface states with associated van Hove singularities. Pt$_2$HgSe$_3$ is shown to host two distinct types of nodal lines without spin-orbit coupling (SOC) which are protected by combined inve…
We investigate how the real and imaginary charge density waves interplay at the Van Hove singularity on the hexagonal lattices. A phenomenological analysis indicates the formation of $3Q$ complex orders at all three nesting momenta. Under a total phase condition, unequal phases at the three momenta break the rotation symmetry generally. The $3Q$ complex orders constitute a rich Haldane-model phase diagram. When effective time-reversal symmetries arise under 1-site translations, the Dirac semimetals are protected. The breakdown of these symmetries gaps the Dirac points and leads to the trivial …
The Chern numbers which correspond to quantized Hall conductance $σ_{xy}$ were calculated for single- and bi-layer honeycomb lattices. The quantization of $σ_{xy}$ occurs in entire energy range. Several large jumps of Chern numbers appear at van-Hove singularities of energy bands without magnetic fields. The plateauxof $σ_{xy}$ are discussed from semi-classical quantization.
Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MA-TBG) exhibits intriguing quantum phase transitions triggered by enhanced electron-electron interactions when its flat-bands are partially filled. However, the phases themselves and their connection to the putative non-trivial topology of the flat bands are largely unexplored. Here we report transport measurements revealing a succession of doping-induced Lifshitz transitions that are accompanied by van Hove singularities (VHS) which facilitate the emergence of correlation-induced gaps and topologically non-trivial sub-bands. In the presence of a magnetic…

A mechanism of stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation by an electron beam in carbon nanotubes is theoretically considered. Three basic properties of carbon nanotubes, a strong slowing down of surface electromagnetic waves, ballisticity of the electron motion over typical nanotube length, and extremely high electron current density reachable in nanotubes, allow proposing them as candidates for the development of nano-scale Chernekov-type emitters, analogous to traveling wave tube and free electron laser. Dispersion equations of the electron beam instability and the threshold condition…
Topological phases, van Hove singularities, and spin texture in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene in the presence of proximity-induced spin-orbit couplings
We study the dynamics of a quantum emitter coupled to a two-dimensional photonic crystal featuring a finite bandwidth with sharp edges and a Van-Hove singularity. We study the effect of strong system-bath coupling and non-Markovianity of the photonic environment using a nonperturbative approach based on the recently introduced NCA dynamical map for open quantum systems. We show that several characteristic features of the dynamics near a photonic band-edge such as the freezing of spontaneous emission and the maximum light-matter entanglement, get strongly modified in presence of counter-rotatin…
Inspired by a recent discovery of a peculiar integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) in graphene, we study QHE on a honeycomb lattice in terms of the topological quantum number, with two-fold interests: First, how the zero-mass Dirac QHE around the center of the tight-binding band crosses over to the ordinary finite-mass fermion QHE around the band edges. Second, how the bulk QHE is related with the edge QHE for the entire spectrum including Dirac and ordinary behaviors. We find the following: (i) The zero-mass Dirac QHE persists up to the van Hove singularities, at which the ordinary fermion behavi…
The dominance of Coulomb interactions over kinetic energy of electrons in narrow, non-trivial moiré bands of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) gives rise to a variety of correlated phases such as correlated insulators, superconductivity, orbital ferromagnetism, Chern insulators and nematicity. Most of these phases occur at or near an integer number of carriers per moiré unit cell. Experimental demonstration of ordered states at fractional moiré band-fillings at zero applied magnetic field $B$, is a challenging pursuit. In this letter, we report the observation of states near half-inte…
