We present a cost-effective, eco-friendly and accessible method for fabricating three-dimensional, ultralight and flexible millimeter-scale metasurfaces using a household 3D printer. In particular, we fabricate conductive Spilt Ring Resonators (SRRs) in a free-standing form, employing the so-called Fused Deposition Modeling 3D printing technique. We experimentally characterize the samples through transmission measurements in standard rectangular waveguide configurations. The structures exhibit well defined resonant features dependent on the geometrical parameters and the infiltrating dielectric materials. The demonstrated 3D printed components are suitable for practical real-life applications while the method holds the additional advantage of the ecological approach, the low cost, the flexibility and the small weight of the components. Thus, the flexible and light 3D printed metasurfaces may serve as electromagnetic components and fabrics for coating a plethora of devices and infrastructure units of different shapes and size. \end{abstract}
We demonstrate a 3D printed holographic metasurface antenna for beam-focusing applications at 10 GHz within the X-band frequency regime. The metasurface antenna is printed using a dual-material 3D printer leveraging a biodegradable conductive polymer material (Electrifi) to print the conductive parts and polylactic acid (PLA) to print the dielectric substrate. The entire metasurface antenna is 3D printed at once; no additional techniques, such as metal-plating and laser etching, are required. It is demonstrated that using the 3D printed conductive polymer metasurface antenna, high-fidelity bea…
The transmission of linearly and circularly polarized waves are studied both theoretically and experimentally for chiral metasurfaces formed by arrays of metallic square helices. The helical particles of the metasurfaces are constructed of rectangular bars manufactured by direct three-dimensional printing in solid metal. The transmittance of the metasurface is found to depend critically on the number of bars forming the square helical particles. In the case of an even number of bars, the chiral metasurface exhibits identical co-polarized transmittance of orthogonal linearly polarized waves, wh…
We present an analytical scheme for the design of realistic metagratings for wide-angle engineered reflection. These recently proposed planar structures can reflect an incident plane wave into a prescribed (generally non-specular) angle with very high efficiencies, using only a single meta-atom per period. Such devices offer a means to overcome the implementation difficulties associated with standard metasurfaces (consisting of closely-packed subwavelength meta-atoms) and the relatively low efficiencies of gradient metasurfaces. In contrast to previous work, in which accurate systematic design…
We present the design, fabrication, and experimental characterization of a two-dimensional, dynamically tuned, metasurface aperture, emphasizing its potential performance in computational imaging applications. The dynamic metasurface aperture (DMA) consists of an irregular, planar cavity that feeds a multitude of tunable metamaterial elements, all fabricated in a compact, multilayer printed circuit board process. The design considerations for the metamaterial element as a tunable radiator, the associated biasing circuitry, as well as cavity parameters are examined and discussed. A sensing matr…
A new method is presented to manufacture piezoresistive tactile sensors using fused deposition modelling (FDM)printing technology with two different filaments made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polylactic acid-graphene (PLA-G) composite. The sensor shows very high sensitivity (gauge factor~550) and excellent recovery to bending-induced strain and can detect a wide range of pressures. This new technology opens the door for 3D printing soft robotic parts capable of tactile communications.
We present the design and fabrication of 3D printed holographic beamforming antennas. The antennas utilize additively manufactured hollow rectangular waveguides that feed radiating rectilinear slots inserted into the upper conducting wall. The lengths of the individual slots are altered to implement a holographic beamforming solution designed using a coupled dipole formalism. For rapid verification, the designed antennas are fabricated using a desktop dual-extrusion fused filament 3D printer. The body of each antenna and its inner conducting surface are respectively printed using polylactic ac…
Previously reported acoustic metasurfaces that consist of fixed channels, are untunable to meet the broadband requirement and alterable functionalities. To overcome this limitation, we propose screw-and-nut mechanism of tunability and design a type of continuously tunable acoustic metasurface with unit components of helical cylinders which are screwed into a plate. The spiral channel length can be tuned continuously by the screwed depth; and then a metasurface with continuously tunable acoustic phase at independent pixels is attained. Different distributions of the unit components can shape an…
Magnetic isotropic NdFeB powder is processed by the following additive manufacturing methods: (i) stereolithography (SLA), (ii) fused filament fabrication (FFF), and (iii) selective laser sintering (SLS). For the first time, a stereolithography based method is used to 3D print hard magnetic materials. FFF and SLA use a polymer matrix material as binder, SLS sinters the powder directly. All methods use the same hard magnetic NdFeB powder material. Complex magnets with small feature sizes in a superior surface quality can be printed with SLA. The magnetic properties for the processed samples are…
Within this work, we demonstrate in-situ easy-axis alignment of single-crystal magnetic particles inside a polymer matrix using fused filament fabrication. Two different magnetic materials are investigated: (i) Strontium hexaferrite inside a PA6 matrix, fill grade: 49 vol% and (ii) Samarium iron nitride inside a PA12 matrix, fill grade: 44 vol%. In the presence of the external alignment field, the strontium hexaferrite particles inside the PA6 matrix can be well aligned with a ratio of remanent magnetization to saturation magnetization of 0.7. No significant alignment for samarium iron nitride…

Large-scale microfluidic microsystems with complex three-dimensional (3D) configurations are highly in demand by both fundamental research and industrial application, holding the potentials for fostering a wide range of innovative applications such as lab-on-a-chip and organ-on-a-chip as well as continuous-flow manufacturing of fine chemicals. However, freeform fabrication of such systems remains challenging for most of the current fabrication techniques in terms of fabrication resolution, flexibility, and achievable footprint size. Here, we report ultrashort pulse laser microfabrication of fr…
Metalenses, which exhibit superior light-modulating performance with sub-micrometer-scale thicknesses, are suitable alternatives to conventional bulky refractive lenses. However, fabrication limitations, such as a high cost, low throughput, and small patterning area, hinder their mass production. Here, we demonstrate the mass production of low-cost, high-throughput, and large-aperture visible metalenses using an argon fluoride immersion scanner and wafer-scale nanoimprint lithography. Once a 12-inch master stamp is imprinted, hundreds of centimeter-scale metalenses can be fabricated. To enhanc…
In this publication we describe the extrusion process and the properties of polymer-bonded anisotropic SrFe$_\text{12}$O$_\text{19}$ filaments for fused filament fabrication (FFF). Highly filled polyamide 12 filaments with a filling fraction from 40 vol.% to 55 vol.% are mixed and extruded into filaments with a diameter of 1.75 mm. Such filaments are processable with a conventional FFF 3D printer. No modifications of the 3D printer are necessary. Detailed mechanical and magnetic investigations of printed samples are performed and discussed. In the presence of an external alignment field, the S…

A promising method for obtaining ceramic components with additive manufacturing (AM) is to use a two-step process of first printing the artifact in polymer and then converting it to ceramic using pyrolysis to form polymer derived ceramics (PDCs). AM of ceramic components using PDCs has been demonstrated with a number of high-cost techniques, but data is lacking for fused filament fabrication (FFF)-based 3-D printing. This study investigates the potential to use the lower-cost, more widespread and accessible FFF-based 3-D printing of PDCs. Low-cost FFF machines have a resolution limit set by th…
