This paper considers a massive random access problem in which a large number of sporadically active devices wish to communicate with a base station (BS) equipped with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas. Each device is preassigned a unique signature sequence, and the BS identifies the active devices by detecting which sequences are transmitted. This device activity detection problem can be formulated as a maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) problem for which the sample covariance matrix of the received signal is a sufficient statistic. The goal of this paper is to characterize the feasible set of problem parameters under which this covariance based approach is able to successfully recover the device activities in the massive MIMO regime. Through an analysis of the asymptotic behaviors of MLE via its associated Fisher information matrix, this paper derives a necessary and sufficient condition on the Fisher information matrix to ensure a vanishing probability of detection error as the number of antennas goes to infinity, based on which a numerical phase transition analysis is obtained. This condition is also examined from a perspective of covariance matching, which relates the phase transition analysis to a recently derived scaling law. Further, we provide a characterization of the distribution of the estimation error in MLE, based on which the error probabilities in device activity detection can be accurately predicted. Finally, this paper studies a random access scheme with joint device activity and data detection and analyzes its performance in a similar way.
We describe the structure of optimal Input covariance matrices for single user multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with covariance feedback and for general correlated fading. Our approach is based on the novel concept of right commutant and recovers previously derived results for the Kronecker product models. Conditions are derived which allow a significant simplification of the optimization problem.
This paper investigates an error covariance matrix splitting technique for multiuser multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) interference downlink channel. Most of the related work has thus far considered the traditional error covariance matrix which has not been well-shaped for maximizing the system capacity. Thus, we split and propose a new iterative error covariance matrix to mitigate the system error and maximize the system capacity in this paper. Numerical results illustrate that our proposed method is strictly better than the traditional method.
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) or multi-antenna communication is a key technique to achieve high spectral efficiency in wireless systems. For the point-to-point MIMO channel, it is a well-known result that the channel singular value decomposition (SVD) based linear precoding and decoding achieves the channel capacity, which also diagonalizes the MIMO channel into parallel single-input single-output (SISO) sub-channels for independent encoding and decoding. However, in multi-user MIMO systems, the optimal transmit covariance of each MIMO link is generally not its channel SVD based as a r…
Interference during the uplink training phase significantly deteriorates the performance of a massive MIMO system. The impact of the interference can be reduced by exploiting second order statistics of the channel vectors, e.g., to obtain minimum mean squared error estimates of the channel. In practice, the channel covariance matrices have to be estimated. The estimation of the covariance matrices is also impeded by the interference during the training phase. However, the coherence interval of the covariance matrices is larger than that of the channel vectors. This allows us to derive methods …
Spatial channel covariance information can replace full knowledge of the entire channel matrix for designing analog precoders in hybrid multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) architecture. Spatial channel covariance estimation, however, is challenging for the hybrid MIMO architecture because the estimator operating at baseband can only obtain a lower dimensional pre-combined signal through fewer radio frequency (RF) chains than antennas. In this paper, we propose two approaches for covariance estimation based on compressive sensing techniques. One is to apply a time-varying sensing matrix, and …
This work investigates the impact of imperfect statistical information in the uplink of massive MIMO systems. In particular, we first show why covariance information is needed and then propose two schemes for covariance matrix estimation. A lower bound on the spectral efficiency (SE) of any combining scheme is derived, under imperfect covariance knowledge, and a closed-form expression is computed for maximum-ratio combin- ing. We show that having covariance information is not critical, but that it is relatively easy to acquire it and to achieve SE close to the ideal case of having perfect stat…
In this paper, we investigate the quantization and the feedback of downlink spatial covariance matrix for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with cascaded precoding. Massive MIMO has gained a lot of attention recently because of its ability to significantly improve the network performance. To reduce the overhead of downlink channel estimation and uplink feedback in frequency-division duplex massive MIMO systems, cascaded precoding has been proposed, where the outer precoder is implemented using traditional limited feedback while the inner precoder is determined by the spatia…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems use antenna arrays with a large number of antenna elements to serve many different users simultaneously. The large number of antennas in the system makes, however, the channel state information (CSI) acquisition strategy design critical and particularly challenging. Interestingly, in the context of massive MIMO systems, channels exhibit a large degree of spatial correlation which results in strongly rank-deficient spatial covariance matrices at the base station (BS). With the final objective of analyzing the benefits of covariance-aided upl…
We propose a novel pilot structure for covariance matrix estimation in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems in which each user transmits two pilot sequences, with the second pilot sequence multiplied by a random phase-shift. The covariance matrix of a particular user is obtained by computing the sample cross-correlation of the channel estimates obtained from the two pilot sequences. This approach relaxes the requirement that all the users transmit their uplink pilots over the same set of symbols. We derive expressions for the achievable rate and the mean-squared error of the c…
We determine the capacity-achieving input covariance matrices for coherent block-fading correlated MIMO Rician channels. In contrast with the Rayleigh and uncorrelated Rician cases, no closed-form expressions for the eigenvectors of the optimum input covariance matrix are available. Both the eigenvectors and eigenvalues have to be evaluated by using numerical techniques. As the corresponding optimization algorithms are not very attractive, we evaluate the limit of the average mutual information when the number of transmit and receive antennas converge to infinity at the same rate. If the chann…
For multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication systems, many transceiver design problems involve the optimization of the covariance matrices of the transmitted signals. The derivation of the optimal solutions based on Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions is a most popular method, and many results have been reported for different scenarios of MIMO systems. In this overview paper, we propose a unified framework in formulating the KKT conditions for general MIMO systems. Based on this framework, the optimal water-filling structures of the transmission covariance matrices are derived rigorously,…
In this contribution, an algorithm for evaluating the capacity-achieving input covariance matrices for frequency selective Rayleigh MIMO channels is proposed. In contrast with the flat fading Rayleigh cases, no closed-form expressions for the eigenvectors of the optimum input covariance matrix are available. Classically, both the eigenvectors and eigenvalues are computed numerically and the corresponding optimization algorithms remain computationally very demanding. In this paper, it is proposed to optimize (w.r.t. the input covariance matrix) a large system approximation of the average mutual…
This paper considers a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian wiretap channel model, where there exists a transmitter, a legitimate receiver and an eavesdropper, each equipped with multiple antennas. In this paper, we first revisit the rank property of the optimal input covariance matrix that achieves the secrecy capacity of the multiple antenna MIMO Gaussian wiretap channel under the average power constraint. Next, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the MIMO wiretap channel parameters such that the optimal input covariance matrix is full-rank, and we fully characterize t…
This paper tackles the problem of downlink data transmission in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems where user equipments (UEs) exhibit high spatial correlation and channel estimation is limited by strong pilot contamination. Signal subspace separation among UEs is, in fact, rarely realized in practice and is generally beyond the control of the network designer (as it is dictated by the physical scattering environment). In this context, we propose a novel statistical beamforming technique, referred to as MIMO covariance shaping, that exploits multiple antennas at the UEs and …
In this paper, a novel covariance-based channel feedback mechanism is investigated for frequency division duplexing (FDD) massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. The concept capitalizes on the notion of user statistical separability which was hinted in several prior works in the massive antenna regime but not fully exploited so far. We here propose a hybrid statistical-instantaneous feedback mechanism where the users are separated into two classes of feedback design based on their channel covariance. Under the hybrid framework, each user either operates on a statistical feedback mode …
In this paper, we propose a new channel estimation scheme for TDD/FDD massive MIMO systems by reconstructing uplink/downlink channel covariance matrices (CCMs) with the aid of array signal processing techniques. Specifically, the angle information and power angular spectrum (PAS) of each multi-path channel is extracted from the instantaneous uplink channel state information (CSI). Then, the uplink CCM is reconstructed and can be used to improve the uplink channel estimation without any additional training cost. In virtue of angle reciprocity as well as PAS reciprocity between uplink and downli…
This paper studies the impact of imperfect channel covariance information on the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) spectral efficiencies (SEs) of a time-division duplexed (TDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. We derive closed-form expressions for the UL and DL average SEs by considering linear minimum mean squared (LMMSE)-type and element-wise LMMSE-type channel estimation that represent LMMSE and element-wise LMMSE with estimated covariance matrices, respectively. The closed-form expressions of these average SEs are functions of the number of observations used for estimating…
Optimal signalling over the Gaussian MIMO wire-tap channel is studied under the total transmit power constraint. A closed-form solution for an optimal transmit covariance matrix is obtained when the channel is strictly degraded. In combination with the rank-1 solution, this provides the complete characterization of the optimal covariance for the case of two transmit antennas. The cases of weak eavesdropper and high SNR are considered. It is shown that the optimal covariance does not converge to a scaled identity in the high-SNR regime. Necessary optimality conditions and a tight upper bound on…
This study investigates the mean capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems for spatially semi-correlated flat fading channels. In reality, the capacity degrades dramatic due to the channel covariance (CC) when correlations exist at the transmitter or receiver or on both sides. Most existing works have so far considered the traditional channel covariance matrices that have not been entirely constructed. Thus, we propose an iterative channel covariance (ICC) matrix using a matrix splitting (MS) technique with a guaranteed zero correlations coefficient in the case of the downlink …
Obtaining channel covariance knowledge is of great importance in various Multiple-Input Multiple-Output MIMO communication applications, including channel estimation and covariance-based user grouping. In a massive MIMO system, covariance estimation proves to be challenging due to the large number of antennas ($M\gg 1$) employed in the base station and hence, a high signal dimension. In this case, the number of pilot transmissions $N$ becomes comparable to the number of antennas and standard estimators, such as the sample covariance, yield a poor estimate of the true covariance and are undesir…
Channel covariance is emerging as a critical ingredient of the acquisition of instantaneous channel state information (CSI) in multi-user Massive MIMO systems operating in frequency division duplex (FDD) mode. In this context, channel reciprocity does not hold, and it is generally expected that covariance information about the downlink channel must be estimated and fed back by the user equipment (UE). As an alternative CSI acquisition technique, we propose to infer the downlink covariance based on the observed uplink covariance. This inference process relies on a dictionary of uplink/downlink …
We consider the problem of downlink training and channel estimation in frequency division duplex (FDD) massive MIMO systems, where the base station (BS) equipped with a large number of antennas serves a number of single-antenna users simultaneously. To obtain the channel state information (CSI) at the BS in FDD systems, the downlink channel has to be estimated by users via downlink training and then fed back to the BS. For FDD large-scale MIMO systems, the overhead for downlink training and CSI uplink feedback could be prohibitively high, which presents a significant challenge. In this paper, …
We propose a comprehensive scheme for realizing a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with dual-polarized antennas in frequency division duplexing (FDD) mode. Employing dual-polarized elements in a massive MIMO array has been common practice recently and can, in principle, double the number of spatial degrees of freedom with a less-than-proportional increase in array size. However, processing a dual-polarized channel is demanding due to the high channel dimension and the lack of Uplink-Downlink (UL-DL) channel reciprocity in FDD mode. In particular, the difficulty arises in ch…
In this paper, we propose a novel channel feedback scheme for frequency division duplexing massive multi-input multi-output systems. The concept uses the notion of user statistical separability which was hinted in several prior works in the massive antenna regime but not fully exploited so far. We here propose a hybrid statistical-instantaneous feedback scheme based on a user classification mechanism where the classification metric derives from a rate bound analysis. According to classification results, a user either operates on a statistical feedback mode or instantaneous mode. Our results il…

This paper considers a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay system with an energy harvesting relay node. All nodes are equipped with multiple antennas, and the relay node depends on the harvested energy from the received signal to support information forwarding. In particular, the relay node deploys power splitting based energy harvesting scheme. The capacity maximization problem subject to power constraints at both the source and relay nodes is considered for both fixed source covariance matrix and optimal source covariance matrix cases. Instead of using existing software solvers, iter…
In this paper we consider the computation of channel capacity for ergodic multiple-input multiple-output channels with additive white Gaussian noise. Two scenarios are considered. Firstly, a time-varying channel is considered in which both the transmitter and the receiver have knowledge of the channel realization. The optimal transmission strategy is water-filling over space and time. It is shown that this may be achieved in a causal, indeed instantaneous fashion. In the second scenario, only the receiver has perfect knowledge of the channel realization, while the transmitter has knowledge of …
This paper considers dynamic transmit covariance design in point-to-point MIMO fading systems with unknown channel state distributions and inaccurate channel state information subject to both long term and short term power constraints. First, the case of instantaneous but possibly inaccurate channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is treated. By extending the drift-plus-penalty technique, a dynamic transmit covariance policy is developed and is shown to approach optimality with an $O(δ)$ gap, where $δ$ is the inaccuracy measure of CSIT, regardless of the channel state distribution …
In this paper, we consider the design of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter which simultaneously functions as a MIMO radar and a base station for downlink multiuser communications. In addition to a power constraint, we require the covariance of the transmit waveform be equal to a given optimal covariance for MIMO radar, to guarantee the radar performance. With this constraint, we formulate and solve the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) balancing problem for multiuser transmit beamforming via convex optimization. Considering that the interference cannot be complet…
We study the optimality of linear precoding for the two-receiver multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian broadcast channel (BC) with confidential messages. Secret dirty-paper coding (SDPC) is optimal under an input covariance constraint, but there is no computable secrecy capacity expression for the general MIMO case under an average power constraint. In principle, for this case, the secrecy capacity region could be found through an exhaustive search over the set of all possible matrix power constraints. Clearly, this search, coupled with the complexity of dirty-paper encoding and decod…
The acquisition of the channel covariance matrix is of paramount importance to many strategies in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communications, such as the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) channel estimation. Therefore, plenty of efficient channel covariance matrix estimation schemes have been proposed in the literature. However, an abrupt change in the channel covariance matrix may happen occasionally in practice due to the change in the scattering environment and the user location. Our paper aims to adopt the classic change detection theory to detect the change in the channel covaria…
In this paper, the impacts of imperfect channel covariance matrix on the spectral efficiency (SE) of cell-free distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are analyzed. We propose to estimate the channel covariance matrix by alternately using the assigned pilots and their phase-shifted pilots in different coherent blocks, which improves the accuracy of channel estimation with imperfect covariance matrix and reduces pilot overhead. Under this scheme, the closed-form expressions of SE with maximum ratio combination (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF) receivers are derived, which en…
This paper investigates user cooperation in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with cascaded precoding. The high-dimensional physical channel in massive MIMO systems can be converted into a low-dimensional effective channel through the inner precoder to reduce the overhead of channel estimation and feedback. The inner precoder depends on the spatial covariance matrix of the channels, and thus the same precoder can be used for different users as long as they have the same spatial covariance matrix. Spatial covariance matrix is determined by the surrounding environment of user…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) channels, which occupy frequency ranges much higher than those being used in previous wireless communications systems, are utilized to meet the increased throughput requirements that come with 5G communications. The high levels of attenuation experienced by electromagnetic waves in these frequencies causes MIMO channels to have high spatial correlation. To attain desirable error performances, systems require knowledge about the channel correlations. In this thesis, a deep neural network aided method is proposed for the parametric estimation of the channel covariance ma…
In this paper, we study the problem of multi-band (frequency-variant) covariance interpolation with a particular emphasis towards massive MIMO applications. In a massive MIMO system, the communication between each BS with $M \gg 1$ antennas and each single-antenna user occurs through a collection of scatterers in the environment, where the channel vector of each user at BS antennas consists in a weighted linear combination of the array responses of the scatterers, where each scatterer has its own angle of arrival (AoA) and complex channel gain. The array response at a given AoA depends on the …
The capacity-achieving input covariance matrices for coherent block-fading correlated MIMO Rician channels are determined. In this case, no closed-form expressions for the eigenvectors of the optimum input covariance matrix are available. An approximation of the average mutual information is evaluated in this paper in the asymptotic regime where the number of transmit and receive antennas converge to $+\infty$. New results related to the accuracy of the corresponding large system approximation are provided. An attractive optimization algorithm of this approximation is proposed and we establish…
Multiple signal classification (MUSIC) has been widely applied in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receivers for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. To reduce the cost of radio frequency (RF) chains operating at millimeter-wave bands, hybrid analog-digital structure has been adopted in massive MIMO transceivers. In this situation, the received signals at the antennas are unavailable to the digital receiver, and as a consequence, the spatial covariance matrix (SCM), which is essential in MUSIC algorithm, cannot be obtained using traditional sample average approach. Based on our previous…
Spatial covariance matrix (SCM) is essential in many applications of multi-antenna systems such as massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). For massive MIMO operating at millimeter-wave bands, hybrid analog-digital structure has been adopted to reduce the cost of radio frequency (RF) chains. In this situation, signals received at the antennas are unavailable to the digital receiver, and as a consequence, traditional sample average approach cannot be used for SCM reconstruction in hybrid massive MIMO. To address this issue, beam sweeping algorithm (BSA), which can reconstruct SCM effectiv…
This paper considers the problem of interference control through the use of second-order statistics in massive MIMO multi-cell networks. We consider both the cases of co-located massive arrays and large-scale distributed antenna settings. We are interested in characterizing the low-rankness of users' channel covariance matrices, as such a property can be exploited towards improved channel estimation (so-called pilot decontamination) as well as interference rejection via spatial filtering. In previous work, it was shown that massive MIMO channel covariance matrices exhibit a useful finite rank …
We derive novel bounds for the performance of algorithms that estimate the downlink covariance matrix from the uplink covariance matrix in frequency division duplex (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The focus is on algorithms that use estimates of the angular power spectrum as an intermediate step. Unlike previous results, the proposed bounds follow from simple arguments in possibly infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces, and they do not require strong assumptions on the array geometry or on the propagation model. Furthermore, they are suitable for the analysis of set-t…
Gaussian MIMO channel under total transmit and interference power constraints (TPC and IPC) is considered. A closed-form solution for the optimal transmit covariance matrix in the general case is obtained using the KKT-based approach (up to dual variables). While closed-from solutions for optimal dual variables are possible in special cases, an iterative bisection algorithm (IBA) is proposed to find the optimal dual variables in the general case and its convergence is proved for some special cases. Numerical experiments illustrate its efficient performance. Bounds for the optimal dual variable…
The capacity of cellular networks can be improved by the unprecedented array gain and spatial multiplexing offered by Massive MIMO. Since its inception, the coherent interference caused by pilot contamination has been believed to create a finite capacity limit, as the number of antennas goes to infinity. In this paper, we prove that this is incorrect and an artifact from using simplistic channel models and suboptimal precoding/combining schemes. We show that with multicell MMSE precoding/combining and a tiny amount of spatial channel correlation or large-scale fading variations over the array,…
We propose a novel method for massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (massive MIMO) in Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) systems. Due to the large frequency separation between Uplink (UL) and Downlink (DL), in FDD systems channel reciprocity does not hold. Hence, in order to provide DL channel state information to the Base Station (BS), closed-loop DL channel probing and Channel State Information (CSI) feedback is needed. In massive MIMO this incurs typically a large training overhead. For example, in a typical configuration with M = 200 BS antennas and fading coherence block of T = 200 symbo…
We study the problem of maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation of an approximate common eigenstructure, i.e. an approximate common eigenvectors set (CES), for an ensemble of covariance matrices given a collection of their associated i.i.d vector realizations. This problem has a direct application in multi-user MIMO communications, where the base station (BS) has access to instantaneous user channel vectors through pilot transmission and attempts to perform joint multi-user Downlink (DL) precoding. It is widely accepted that an efficient implementation of this task hinges upon an appropriate design…
This paper studies the design of a decentralized multiuser multi-antenna (MIMO) system for spectrum sharing over a fixed narrow band, where the coexisting users independently update their transmit covariance matrices for individual transmit-rate maximization via an iterative manner. This design problem was usually investigated in the literature by assuming that each user treats the co-channel interference from all the other users as additional (colored) noise at the receiver, i.e., the conventional single-user decoder (SUD) is applied. This paper proposes a new decoding method for the decentra…
Channel-state-information (CSI) feedback methods are considered, especially for massive or very large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To extract essential information from the CSI without redundancy that arises from the highly correlated antennas, a receiver transforms (sparsifies) a correlated CSI vector to an uncorrelated sparse CSI vector by using a Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT) matrix that consists of the eigen vectors of covariance matrix of CSI vector and feeds back the essential components of the sparse CSI, i.e., a principal component analysis method. A transmitte…
Owing to the structure of the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC), associated optimization problems such as capacity region computation and beamforming optimization are typically non-convex, and cannot be solved directly. One feasible approach to these problems is to transform them into their dual multiple access channel (MAC) problems, which are easier to deal with due to their convexity properties. The conventional BC-MAC duality is established via BC-MAC signal transformation, and has been successfully applied to solve beamforming optimization, signal-to-in…
This paper considers the application of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques to non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. A new design of precoding and detection matrices for MIMO-NOMA is proposed and its performance is analyzed for the case with a fixed set of power allocation coefficients. To further improve the performance gap between MIMO-NOMA and conventional orthogonal multiple access schemes, user pairing is applied to NOMA and its impact on the system performance is characterized. More sophisticated choices of power allocation coefficients are also proposed to meet var…
In this paper, we consider the problem of power allocation in MIMO wiretap channel for secrecy in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. Perfect knowledge of the destination channel state information (CSI) and only the statistical knowledge of the eavesdroppers CSI are assumed. We first consider the MIMO wiretap channel with Gaussian input. Using Jensen's inequality, we transform the secrecy rate max-min optimization problem to a single maximization problem. We use generalized singular value decomposition and transform the problem to a concave maximization problem which maximizes the sum secr…
This paper studies a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, in which a multi-antenna base station (BS) sends unified wireless signals to estimate an extended target and communicate with a multi-antenna communication user (CU) at the same time. We investigate the fundamental tradeoff between the estimation Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) for sensing and the data rate for communication, by characterizing the Pareto boundary of the achievable CRB-rate (C-R) region. Towards this end, we formulate a new MIMO rate maximization problem by optimizing the trans…
In this paper, a deterministic equivalent of ergodic sum rate and an algorithm for evaluating the capacity-achieving input covariance matrices for the uplink large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna channels are proposed. We consider a large-scale MIMO system consisting of multiple users and one base station with several distributed antenna sets. Each link between a user and an antenna set forms a two-sided spatially correlated MIMO channel with line-of-sight (LOS) components. Our derivations are based on novel techniques from large dimensional random matrix theory (RMT) under…
We consider a Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel model, where there exists a transmitter, a legitimate receiver and an eavesdropper, each node equipped with multiple antennas. We study the problem of finding the optimal input covariance matrix that achieves secrecy capacity subject to a power constraint, which leads to a non-convex optimization problem that is in general difficult to solve. Existing results for this problem address the case in which the transmitter and the legitimate receiver have two antennas each and the eavesdropper has one antenna. For the gener…
We present a novel access protocol for crowd scenarios in massive MIMO (Multiple-input multiple-output) systems. Crowd scenarios are characterized by a large number of users with intermittent access behavior, whereby orthogonal scheduling is infeasible. In such scenarios, random access is a natural choice. The proposed access protocol relies on two essential properties of a massive MIMO system, namely asymptotic orthogonality between user channels and asymptotic invariance of channel powers. Signal processing techniques that take advantage of these properties allow us to view a set of contamin…
We consider an extension of the massive unsourced random access originally proposed by Polyanskiy to the case where the receiver has a very large number of antennas (a massive MIMO base station) and no channel state information is given to the receiver (fully non-coherent detection). Our coding approach borrows the concatenated coding idea from Amalladinne et. al., combined with a novel non-Bayesian `activity detection' algorithm for massive MIMO random access channels, that outperforms currently proposed Bayesian vector AMP (VAMP) schemes currently proposed for activity detection, and does no…
This paper develops a novel approach to obtaining the optimal scheduling strategy in a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) multi-access channel (MAC), where each transmitter is powered by an individual energy harvesting process. Relying on the state-of-the-art convex optimization tools, the proposed approach provides a low-complexity block coordinate ascent algorithm to obtain the optimal transmission policy that maximizes the weighted sum-throughput for MIMO MAC. The proposed approach can provide the optimal benchmarks for all practical schemes in energy-harvesting powered MIMO MAC transmissions.…
