In this paper, we propose a novel channel feedback scheme for frequency division duplexing massive multi-input multi-output systems. The concept uses the notion of user statistical separability which was hinted in several prior works in the massive antenna regime but not fully exploited so far. We here propose a hybrid statistical-instantaneous feedback scheme based on a user classification mechanism where the classification metric derives from a rate bound analysis. According to classification results, a user either operates on a statistical feedback mode or instantaneous mode. Our results illustrate the sum rate advantages of our scheme under a global feedback overhead constraint.
We describe the structure of optimal Input covariance matrices for single user multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with covariance feedback and for general correlated fading. Our approach is based on the novel concept of right commutant and recovers previously derived results for the Kronecker product models. Conditions are derived which allow a significant simplification of the optimization problem.
This paper investigates an error covariance matrix splitting technique for multiuser multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) interference downlink channel. Most of the related work has thus far considered the traditional error covariance matrix which has not been well-shaped for maximizing the system capacity. Thus, we split and propose a new iterative error covariance matrix to mitigate the system error and maximize the system capacity in this paper. Numerical results illustrate that our proposed method is strictly better than the traditional method.
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) or multi-antenna communication is a key technique to achieve high spectral efficiency in wireless systems. For the point-to-point MIMO channel, it is a well-known result that the channel singular value decomposition (SVD) based linear precoding and decoding achieves the channel capacity, which also diagonalizes the MIMO channel into parallel single-input single-output (SISO) sub-channels for independent encoding and decoding. However, in multi-user MIMO systems, the optimal transmit covariance of each MIMO link is generally not its channel SVD based as a r…
Interference during the uplink training phase significantly deteriorates the performance of a massive MIMO system. The impact of the interference can be reduced by exploiting second order statistics of the channel vectors, e.g., to obtain minimum mean squared error estimates of the channel. In practice, the channel covariance matrices have to be estimated. The estimation of the covariance matrices is also impeded by the interference during the training phase. However, the coherence interval of the covariance matrices is larger than that of the channel vectors. This allows us to derive methods …
Spatial channel covariance information can replace full knowledge of the entire channel matrix for designing analog precoders in hybrid multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) architecture. Spatial channel covariance estimation, however, is challenging for the hybrid MIMO architecture because the estimator operating at baseband can only obtain a lower dimensional pre-combined signal through fewer radio frequency (RF) chains than antennas. In this paper, we propose two approaches for covariance estimation based on compressive sensing techniques. One is to apply a time-varying sensing matrix, and …
This work investigates the impact of imperfect statistical information in the uplink of massive MIMO systems. In particular, we first show why covariance information is needed and then propose two schemes for covariance matrix estimation. A lower bound on the spectral efficiency (SE) of any combining scheme is derived, under imperfect covariance knowledge, and a closed-form expression is computed for maximum-ratio combin- ing. We show that having covariance information is not critical, but that it is relatively easy to acquire it and to achieve SE close to the ideal case of having perfect stat…
In this paper, we investigate the quantization and the feedback of downlink spatial covariance matrix for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with cascaded precoding. Massive MIMO has gained a lot of attention recently because of its ability to significantly improve the network performance. To reduce the overhead of downlink channel estimation and uplink feedback in frequency-division duplex massive MIMO systems, cascaded precoding has been proposed, where the outer precoder is implemented using traditional limited feedback while the inner precoder is determined by the spatia…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems use antenna arrays with a large number of antenna elements to serve many different users simultaneously. The large number of antennas in the system makes, however, the channel state information (CSI) acquisition strategy design critical and particularly challenging. Interestingly, in the context of massive MIMO systems, channels exhibit a large degree of spatial correlation which results in strongly rank-deficient spatial covariance matrices at the base station (BS). With the final objective of analyzing the benefits of covariance-aided upl…
We propose a novel pilot structure for covariance matrix estimation in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems in which each user transmits two pilot sequences, with the second pilot sequence multiplied by a random phase-shift. The covariance matrix of a particular user is obtained by computing the sample cross-correlation of the channel estimates obtained from the two pilot sequences. This approach relaxes the requirement that all the users transmit their uplink pilots over the same set of symbols. We derive expressions for the achievable rate and the mean-squared error of the c…
We determine the capacity-achieving input covariance matrices for coherent block-fading correlated MIMO Rician channels. In contrast with the Rayleigh and uncorrelated Rician cases, no closed-form expressions for the eigenvectors of the optimum input covariance matrix are available. Both the eigenvectors and eigenvalues have to be evaluated by using numerical techniques. As the corresponding optimization algorithms are not very attractive, we evaluate the limit of the average mutual information when the number of transmit and receive antennas converge to infinity at the same rate. If the chann…
For multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication systems, many transceiver design problems involve the optimization of the covariance matrices of the transmitted signals. The derivation of the optimal solutions based on Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions is a most popular method, and many results have been reported for different scenarios of MIMO systems. In this overview paper, we propose a unified framework in formulating the KKT conditions for general MIMO systems. Based on this framework, the optimal water-filling structures of the transmission covariance matrices are derived rigorously,…
In this contribution, an algorithm for evaluating the capacity-achieving input covariance matrices for frequency selective Rayleigh MIMO channels is proposed. In contrast with the flat fading Rayleigh cases, no closed-form expressions for the eigenvectors of the optimum input covariance matrix are available. Classically, both the eigenvectors and eigenvalues are computed numerically and the corresponding optimization algorithms remain computationally very demanding. In this paper, it is proposed to optimize (w.r.t. the input covariance matrix) a large system approximation of the average mutual…
This paper considers a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian wiretap channel model, where there exists a transmitter, a legitimate receiver and an eavesdropper, each equipped with multiple antennas. In this paper, we first revisit the rank property of the optimal input covariance matrix that achieves the secrecy capacity of the multiple antenna MIMO Gaussian wiretap channel under the average power constraint. Next, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the MIMO wiretap channel parameters such that the optimal input covariance matrix is full-rank, and we fully characterize t…
This paper tackles the problem of downlink data transmission in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems where user equipments (UEs) exhibit high spatial correlation and channel estimation is limited by strong pilot contamination. Signal subspace separation among UEs is, in fact, rarely realized in practice and is generally beyond the control of the network designer (as it is dictated by the physical scattering environment). In this context, we propose a novel statistical beamforming technique, referred to as MIMO covariance shaping, that exploits multiple antennas at the UEs and …
In this paper, a novel covariance-based channel feedback mechanism is investigated for frequency division duplexing (FDD) massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. The concept capitalizes on the notion of user statistical separability which was hinted in several prior works in the massive antenna regime but not fully exploited so far. We here propose a hybrid statistical-instantaneous feedback mechanism where the users are separated into two classes of feedback design based on their channel covariance. Under the hybrid framework, each user either operates on a statistical feedback mode …
In this paper, we propose a new channel estimation scheme for TDD/FDD massive MIMO systems by reconstructing uplink/downlink channel covariance matrices (CCMs) with the aid of array signal processing techniques. Specifically, the angle information and power angular spectrum (PAS) of each multi-path channel is extracted from the instantaneous uplink channel state information (CSI). Then, the uplink CCM is reconstructed and can be used to improve the uplink channel estimation without any additional training cost. In virtue of angle reciprocity as well as PAS reciprocity between uplink and downli…
This paper studies the impact of imperfect channel covariance information on the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) spectral efficiencies (SEs) of a time-division duplexed (TDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. We derive closed-form expressions for the UL and DL average SEs by considering linear minimum mean squared (LMMSE)-type and element-wise LMMSE-type channel estimation that represent LMMSE and element-wise LMMSE with estimated covariance matrices, respectively. The closed-form expressions of these average SEs are functions of the number of observations used for estimating…
Optimal signalling over the Gaussian MIMO wire-tap channel is studied under the total transmit power constraint. A closed-form solution for an optimal transmit covariance matrix is obtained when the channel is strictly degraded. In combination with the rank-1 solution, this provides the complete characterization of the optimal covariance for the case of two transmit antennas. The cases of weak eavesdropper and high SNR are considered. It is shown that the optimal covariance does not converge to a scaled identity in the high-SNR regime. Necessary optimality conditions and a tight upper bound on…
This study investigates the mean capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems for spatially semi-correlated flat fading channels. In reality, the capacity degrades dramatic due to the channel covariance (CC) when correlations exist at the transmitter or receiver or on both sides. Most existing works have so far considered the traditional channel covariance matrices that have not been entirely constructed. Thus, we propose an iterative channel covariance (ICC) matrix using a matrix splitting (MS) technique with a guaranteed zero correlations coefficient in the case of the downlink …
Obtaining channel covariance knowledge is of great importance in various Multiple-Input Multiple-Output MIMO communication applications, including channel estimation and covariance-based user grouping. In a massive MIMO system, covariance estimation proves to be challenging due to the large number of antennas ($M\gg 1$) employed in the base station and hence, a high signal dimension. In this case, the number of pilot transmissions $N$ becomes comparable to the number of antennas and standard estimators, such as the sample covariance, yield a poor estimate of the true covariance and are undesir…
Channel covariance is emerging as a critical ingredient of the acquisition of instantaneous channel state information (CSI) in multi-user Massive MIMO systems operating in frequency division duplex (FDD) mode. In this context, channel reciprocity does not hold, and it is generally expected that covariance information about the downlink channel must be estimated and fed back by the user equipment (UE). As an alternative CSI acquisition technique, we propose to infer the downlink covariance based on the observed uplink covariance. This inference process relies on a dictionary of uplink/downlink …
In this letter, a low-feedback non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme using massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission is proposed. In particular, the proposed scheme can decompose a massive-MIMO-NOMA system into multiple separated single-input single-output NOMA channels, and analytical results are developed to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme for two scenarios, with perfect user ordering and with one-bit feedback, respectively.
We consider the problem of downlink training and channel estimation in frequency division duplex (FDD) massive MIMO systems, where the base station (BS) equipped with a large number of antennas serves a number of single-antenna users simultaneously. To obtain the channel state information (CSI) at the BS in FDD systems, the downlink channel has to be estimated by users via downlink training and then fed back to the BS. For FDD large-scale MIMO systems, the overhead for downlink training and CSI uplink feedback could be prohibitively high, which presents a significant challenge. In this paper, …
We propose a comprehensive scheme for realizing a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with dual-polarized antennas in frequency division duplexing (FDD) mode. Employing dual-polarized elements in a massive MIMO array has been common practice recently and can, in principle, double the number of spatial degrees of freedom with a less-than-proportional increase in array size. However, processing a dual-polarized channel is demanding due to the high channel dimension and the lack of Uplink-Downlink (UL-DL) channel reciprocity in FDD mode. In particular, the difficulty arises in ch…
In this paper, we study the effect of feedback on two-user MIMO interference channels. The capacity region of MIMO interference channels with feedback is characterized within a constant number of bits, where this constant is independent of the channel matrices. Further, it is shown that the capacity region of a MIMO interference channel with feedback and its reciprocal interference channel are within a constant number of bits. Finally, the generalized degrees of freedom region for the MIMO interference channel with feedback is characterized.
In this contribution, an algorithm for evaluating the capacity-achieving input covariance matrices for frequency selective Rayleigh MIMO channels is proposed. In contrast with the flat fading Rayleigh case, no closed-form expressions for the eigenvectors of the optimum input covariance matrix are available. Classically, both the eigenvectors and eigenvalues are computed numerically and the corresponding optimization algorithms remain computationally very demanding. In this paper, it is proposed to optimize (w.r.t. the input covariance matrix) a large system approximation of the average mutual …
This paper considers a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay system with an energy harvesting relay node. All nodes are equipped with multiple antennas, and the relay node depends on the harvested energy from the received signal to support information forwarding. In particular, the relay node deploys power splitting based energy harvesting scheme. The capacity maximization problem subject to power constraints at both the source and relay nodes is considered for both fixed source covariance matrix and optimal source covariance matrix cases. Instead of using existing software solvers, iter…
In this paper we consider the computation of channel capacity for ergodic multiple-input multiple-output channels with additive white Gaussian noise. Two scenarios are considered. Firstly, a time-varying channel is considered in which both the transmitter and the receiver have knowledge of the channel realization. The optimal transmission strategy is water-filling over space and time. It is shown that this may be achieved in a causal, indeed instantaneous fashion. In the second scenario, only the receiver has perfect knowledge of the channel realization, while the transmitter has knowledge of …
This paper considers a massive random access problem in which a large number of sporadically active devices wish to communicate with a base station (BS) equipped with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas. Each device is preassigned a unique signature sequence, and the BS identifies the active devices by detecting which sequences are transmitted. This device activity detection problem can be formulated as a maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) problem for which the sample covariance matrix of the received signal is a sufficient statistic. The goal of this paper is to characteri…
This paper considers dynamic transmit covariance design in point-to-point MIMO fading systems with unknown channel state distributions and inaccurate channel state information subject to both long term and short term power constraints. First, the case of instantaneous but possibly inaccurate channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is treated. By extending the drift-plus-penalty technique, a dynamic transmit covariance policy is developed and is shown to approach optimality with an $O(δ)$ gap, where $δ$ is the inaccuracy measure of CSIT, regardless of the channel state distribution …
In this paper, we consider limited feedback systems for FDD large-scale (massive) MIMO. A new codebook-based framework for multiuser (MU) MIMO downlink systems is introduced and then compared with an ideal non-codebook based system. We are particularly interested in the less-known finite-rate feedback regime where the number $M$ of transmit antennas and the number of users are of the same order of magnitude and $M$ is large but finite, which is a typical scenario of large-scale MIMO. We provide new findings in this regime and identify some benefits of the new framework in terms of scheduling g…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is widely recognized as a promising technology for future 5G wireless communication systems. To achieve the theoretical performance gains in massive MIMO systems, accurate channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is crucial. Due to the overwhelming pilot signaling and channel feedback overhead, however, conventional downlink channel estimation and uplink channel feedback schemes might not be suitable for frequency-division duplexing (FDD) massive MIMO systems. In addition, these two topics are usually separately considered in the literat…
In this paper, we consider the design of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter which simultaneously functions as a MIMO radar and a base station for downlink multiuser communications. In addition to a power constraint, we require the covariance of the transmit waveform be equal to a given optimal covariance for MIMO radar, to guarantee the radar performance. With this constraint, we formulate and solve the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) balancing problem for multiuser transmit beamforming via convex optimization. Considering that the interference cannot be complet…
We study the optimality of linear precoding for the two-receiver multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian broadcast channel (BC) with confidential messages. Secret dirty-paper coding (SDPC) is optimal under an input covariance constraint, but there is no computable secrecy capacity expression for the general MIMO case under an average power constraint. In principle, for this case, the secrecy capacity region could be found through an exhaustive search over the set of all possible matrix power constraints. Clearly, this search, coupled with the complexity of dirty-paper encoding and decod…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is becoming a key technology for future 5G wireless communications. Channel feedback for massive MIMO is challenging due to the substantially increased dimension of MIMO channel matrix. In this letter, we propose a compressive sensing (CS) based differential channel feedback scheme to reduce the feedback overhead. Specifically, the temporal correlation of time-varying channels is exploited to generate the differential channel impulse response (CIR) between two CIRs in neighboring time slots, which enjoys a much stronger sparsity than the original s…
The acquisition of the channel covariance matrix is of paramount importance to many strategies in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communications, such as the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) channel estimation. Therefore, plenty of efficient channel covariance matrix estimation schemes have been proposed in the literature. However, an abrupt change in the channel covariance matrix may happen occasionally in practice due to the change in the scattering environment and the user location. Our paper aims to adopt the classic change detection theory to detect the change in the channel covaria…
In this paper, the impacts of imperfect channel covariance matrix on the spectral efficiency (SE) of cell-free distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are analyzed. We propose to estimate the channel covariance matrix by alternately using the assigned pilots and their phase-shifted pilots in different coherent blocks, which improves the accuracy of channel estimation with imperfect covariance matrix and reduces pilot overhead. Under this scheme, the closed-form expressions of SE with maximum ratio combination (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF) receivers are derived, which en…
This paper investigates user cooperation in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with cascaded precoding. The high-dimensional physical channel in massive MIMO systems can be converted into a low-dimensional effective channel through the inner precoder to reduce the overhead of channel estimation and feedback. The inner precoder depends on the spatial covariance matrix of the channels, and thus the same precoder can be used for different users as long as they have the same spatial covariance matrix. Spatial covariance matrix is determined by the surrounding environment of user…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) channels, which occupy frequency ranges much higher than those being used in previous wireless communications systems, are utilized to meet the increased throughput requirements that come with 5G communications. The high levels of attenuation experienced by electromagnetic waves in these frequencies causes MIMO channels to have high spatial correlation. To attain desirable error performances, systems require knowledge about the channel correlations. In this thesis, a deep neural network aided method is proposed for the parametric estimation of the channel covariance ma…
We consider a MIMO fading broadcast channel and compute achievable ergodic rates when channel state information is acquired at the receivers via downlink training and it is provided to the transmitter by channel state feedback. Unquantized (analog) and quantized (digital) channel state feedback schemes are analyzed and compared under various assumptions. Digital feedback is shown to be potentially superior when the feedback channel uses per channel state coefficient is larger than 1. Also, we show that by proper design of the digital feedback link, errors in the feedback have a minor effect ev…
In this paper, we study the problem of multi-band (frequency-variant) covariance interpolation with a particular emphasis towards massive MIMO applications. In a massive MIMO system, the communication between each BS with $M \gg 1$ antennas and each single-antenna user occurs through a collection of scatterers in the environment, where the channel vector of each user at BS antennas consists in a weighted linear combination of the array responses of the scatterers, where each scatterer has its own angle of arrival (AoA) and complex channel gain. The array response at a given AoA depends on the …
Conventional MU-MIMO techniques, e.g. Linear Zero-Forced Beamforming (LZFB), require sufficiently accurate channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) in order to realize spectral efficient transmission (degree of freedom gains). In practical settings, however, CSIT accuracy can be limited by a number of issues including CSI estimation, CSI feedback delay between user terminals to base stations, and the time/frequency coherence of the channel. The latter aspects of CSIT-feedback delay and channel-dynamics can lead to significant challenges in the deployment of efficient MU-MIMO systems…
Channel feedback is essential in frequency division duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Unfortunately, previous work on multiuser MIMO has shown that the codebook size for channel feedback should scale exponentially with the number of base station (BS) antennas, which is greatly increased in massive MIMO systems. To reduce the codebook size and feedback overhead, we propose an angle-of-departure (AoD)-adaptive subspace codebook for channel feedback in FDD massive MIMO systems. Our key insight is to leverage the observation that path AoDs vary more slowly than…
Full-rate (FR) and full-diversity (FD) are attractive features in MIMO systems. We refer to systems which achieve both FR and FD simultaneously as FRFD systems. Non-orthogonal STBCs can achieve FRFD without feedback, but their ML decoding complexities are high. V-BLAST without precoding achieves FR but not FD. FRFD can be achieved in V-BLAST through precoding given full channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). However, with limited feedback precoding, V-BLAST achieves FD, but with some rate loss. Our contribution in this paper is two-fold: $i)$ we propose a limited feedback (LFB) p…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems rely on channel state information (CSI) feedback to perform precoding and achieve performance gain in frequency division duplex (FDD) networks. However, the huge number of antennas poses a challenge to conventional CSI feedback reduction methods and leads to excessive feedback overhead. In this article, we develop a real-time CSI feedback architecture, called CsiNet-long short-term memory (LSTM), by extending a novel deep learning (DL)-based CSI sensing and recovery network. CsiNet-LSTM considerably enhances recovery quality and improves tr…
In this paper, we consider a general multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system with channel state information (CSI) feedback over time-correlated Rayleigh block-fading channels. Specifically, we first derive the closed-form expression of the minimum differential feedback rate to achieve the maximum erdodic capacity in the presence of channel estimation errors and quantization distortion at the receiver. With the feedback-channel transmission rate constraint, in the periodic feedback system, we further investigate the relationship of the ergodic capacity and the differential feedback interva…
We consider a MIMO fading broadcast channel and compare the achievable ergodic rates when the channel state information at the transmitter is provided by analog noisy feedback or by quantized (digital) feedback. The superiority of digital feedback is shown, with perfect or imperfect CSIR, whenever the number of feedback channel uses per channel coefficient is larger than 1. Also, we show that by proper design of the digital feedback link, errors in the feedback have a minor effect even by using very simple uncoded modulation. Finally, we show that analog feedback achieves a fraction 1 - 2F of …
The capacity-achieving input covariance matrices for coherent block-fading correlated MIMO Rician channels are determined. In this case, no closed-form expressions for the eigenvectors of the optimum input covariance matrix are available. An approximation of the average mutual information is evaluated in this paper in the asymptotic regime where the number of transmit and receive antennas converge to $+\infty$. New results related to the accuracy of the corresponding large system approximation are provided. An attractive optimization algorithm of this approximation is proposed and we establish…
We consider a MIMO fading broadcast channel where channel state information is acquired at user terminals via downlink training and channel feedback is used to provide transmitter channel state information (CSIT) to the base station. The feedback channel (the corresponding uplink) is modeled as an AWGN channel, orthogonal across users. The total bandwidth consumed is the sum of the bandwidth/resources used for downlink training, channel feedback, and data transmission. Assuming that the channel follows a block fading model and that zeroforcing beamforming is used, we optimize the net achievabl…
Next generation wireless communications rely on multiple input multiple output (MIMO) techniques to achieve high data rates. Feedback of channel information can be used in MIMO precoding to fully activate the strongest channel modes and improve MIMO performance. Unfortunately, the bandwidth of the control channel via which the feedback is conveyed is severely limited. An important issue is how to improve the MIMO precoding performance with minimal feedback. In this letter, we present a method that uses a rotating codebook technique to effectively improve the precoding performance without the n…
Channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS) is crucial to achieve beamforming and multiplexing gains in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. State-of-the-art limited feedback schemes require feedback overhead that scales linearly with the number of BS antennas, which is prohibitive for $5$G massive MIMO. This work proposes novel limited feedback algorithms that lift this burden by exploiting the inherent sparsity in double directional (DD) MIMO channel representation using overcomplete dictionaries. These dictionaries are associated with angle of arrival (AoA) and angle …
We study the asymptotic outage performance of incremental redundancy automatic repeat request (INR-ARQ) transmission over the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) block-fading channels with discrete input constellations. We first show that transmission with random codes using a discrete signal constellation across all transmit antennas achieves the optimal outage diversity given by the Singleton bound. We then analyze the optimal SNR-exponent and outage diversity of INR-ARQ transmission over the MIMO block-fading channel. We show that a significant gain in outage diversity is obtained by prov…
Multiple signal classification (MUSIC) has been widely applied in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receivers for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. To reduce the cost of radio frequency (RF) chains operating at millimeter-wave bands, hybrid analog-digital structure has been adopted in massive MIMO transceivers. In this situation, the received signals at the antennas are unavailable to the digital receiver, and as a consequence, the spatial covariance matrix (SCM), which is essential in MUSIC algorithm, cannot be obtained using traditional sample average approach. Based on our previous…
Channel state feedback schemes for the MIMO broadcast downlink have been widely studied in the frequency-flat case. This work focuses on the more relevant frequency selective case, where some important new aspects emerge. We consider a MIMO-OFDM broadcast channel and compare achievable ergodic rates under three channel state feedback schemes: analog feedback, direction quantized feedback and "time-domain" channel quantized feedback. The first two schemes are direct extensions of previously proposed schemes. The third scheme is novel, and it is directly inspired by rate-distortion theory of Gau…
In a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, the availability of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter is essential for performance improvement. Recent convolutional neural network (NN) based techniques show competitive ability in realizing CSI compression and feedback. By introducing a new NN architecture, we enhance the accuracy of quantized CSI feedback in MIMO communications. The proposed NN architecture invokes a module named long short-term memory (LSTM) which admits the NN to benefit from exploiting temporal and frequency correlations of wireless channels. Compromisin…
Interference alignment (IA) is a linear precoding strategy that can achieve optimal capacity scaling at high SNR in interference networks. However, most existing IA designs require full channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters, which would lead to significant CSI signaling overhead. There are two techniques, namely CSI quantization and CSI feedback filtering, to reduce the CSI feedback overhead. In this paper, we consider IA processing with CSI feedback filtering in MIMO cellular networks. We introduce a novel metric, namely the feedback dimension, to quantify the first order CSI fe…
Channel state information (CSI) feedback is a challenging issue in frequency division multiplexing (FDD) massive MIMO systems. This paper studies a cooperative feedback scheme, where the users first exchange their CSI with each other by exploiting device-to-device (D2D) communications, then compute the precoder by themselves, and feed back the precoder to the base station (BS). Analytical results are derived to show that the cooperative precoder feedback is more efficient than the CSI feedback in terms of interference mitigation. Under the constraint of limited D2D communication capacity, we d…
