We present a revision of predictions for nuclear shadowing in deep-inelastic scattering at small Bjorken $x_{Bj}$ corresponding to kinematic regions accessible by the future experiments at electron-ion colliders. The nuclear shadowing is treated within the color dipole formalism based on the rigorous Green function technique. This allows incorporating naturally color transparency and coherence length effects, which are not consistently and properly included in present calculations. For the lowest $|q\bar q\rangle$ Fock component of the photon, our calculations are based on an exact numerical solution of the evolution equation for the Green function. Here the magnitude of shadowing is tested using a realistic form for the nuclear density function, as well as various phenomenological models for the dipole cross section. The corresponding variation of the transverse size of the $q\bar q$ photon fluctuations is important for $x_{Bj}\gtrsim 10^{-4}$, on the contrary with the most of other models, which use frequently only the eikonal approximation with the "frozen" transverse size. At $x_{Bj}\lesssim 0.01$ we calculate within the same formalism also a shadowing correction for the higher Fock component of the photon containing gluons. The corresponding magnitudes of gluon shadowing correction are compared adopting different phenomenological dipole models. Our results are tested by available data from the E665 and NMC collaborations. Finally, the magnitude of nuclear shadowing is predicted for various kinematic regions that should be scanned by the future experiments at electron-ion colliders.
We demonstrate that leading twist nuclear shadowing leads to large corrections for the extraction of the neutron structure function F_2n from the future deuteron collider data both in the inclusive and in the tagged structure function modes. We suggest several strategies to address the extraction of F_2n and to measure at the same time the effect of nuclear shadowing via the measurement of the distortion of the proton spectator spectrum in the semi-inclusive e D \to e^{\prime}pX process.
While the phenomenon of gluon nuclear shadowing at small $x$ has been getting confirmation in QCD analyses of various LHC measurements involving heavy nuclei, it has not been possible so far to establish experimentally the number of target nucleons responsible for nuclear shadowing in a given process. To address this issue, we study coherent $J / ψ$ electroproduction on $^4$He and $^3$He in the kinematics of a future electron-ion collider and show that this process has the power to disentangle the contributions of the interaction with a specific number of nucleons $k$, in particular, with two …
Collinear factorized perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) model predictions are compared for $p+{\rm Pb}$ at 5.02$A$ TeV to test nuclear shadowing of parton distribution at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The pseudorapidity distribution the nuclear modification factor (NMF), $R_{p{\rm Pb}}(y=0,p_T<20\;{\rm GeV}/{\it c}) = dn_{p{\rm Pb}} /(N_{\rm coll}(b)dn_{pp})$ and the pseudorapidity asymmetry $Y_{asym}^{h}(p_T)=R^h_{pPb}(p_T, η<0)/R^h_{pPb}(p_T,η>0)$ are computed using {\small HIJING/BB v2.0 model} and a pQCD improved parton model kTpQCD\_v2.0 which embedded generalized parton distri…
Photoproduction of heavy quarks and exclusive production of vector mesons in ultraperipheral proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions depend significantly on nuclear gluon distributions. In the present study we investigate quantitatively the extent of the applicability of these processes at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in constraining the shadowing component of nuclear gluon modifications.
We review predictions of the theory of leading twist nuclear shadowing for inclusive unpolarized and polarized deuteron structure functions F_2^D, g_1^D and b_1^D and for the tagged deuteron structure function F_2^D(x,Q^2,\vec{p}). We analyze the possibility to extract the neutron structure function F_2^n from electron-deuteron data and demonstrate that an account of leading twist nuclear shadowing leads to large corrections for the extraction of F_2^n from the future deuteron collider data both in the inclusive and in the tagged structure function modes. We suggest several strategies to addre…
We study nuclear shadowing in $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ production in hadron-nucleus interactions and in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. %We define the regions in $x_f$ where nuclear shadowing begins %to set in for \jp\ and \up. As a consequence of the perturbative $Q^2$-dependence of gluon shadowing, we predict that $Υ$ production is less suppressed than the $J/ψ$. We show that antishadowing leads to enhanced \jp\ production at $x_f \lesssim 0$, an effect reduced for $Υ$ production.
The production of prompt photons at high energies provides a direct probe of the dynamics of the strong interactions. In particular, one expect that it could be used to constrain the behavior of the nuclear gluon distribution in $pA$ and $AA$ collisions. In this letter we investigate the influence of nuclear effects in the production of prompt photons and estimate the transverse momentum dependence of the nuclear ratios $R_{pA} = {\frac{dσ(pA)}{dy d^2 p_T}} / A {\frac{dσ(pp)}{dy d^2 p_T}}$ and $R_{AA} = {\frac{dσ(AA)}{dy d^2 p_T}} / A^2 {\frac{dσ(pp)}{dy d^2 p_T}}$ at RHIC and LHC energies. We…
Collinear factorized perturbative QCD model predictions are compared for p+Pb at 4.4A TeV to test nuclear shadowing of parton distribution at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The nuclear modification factor (NMF), R_{pPb}(y=0,p_T<20 GeV/c) = dn_{p Pb} /(N_{coll}(b)dn_{pp}), is computed with electron-nucleus (e+A) global fit with different nuclear shadow distributions and compared to fixed Q^2 shadow ansatz used in Monte Carlo Heavy Ion Jet Interacting Generator (HIJING) type models. Due to rapid DGLAP reduction of shadowing with increasing Q^2 used in e+A global fit, our results confirm that n…
We present and discuss the theory and phenomenology of the leading twist theory of nuclear shadowing which is based on the combination of the generalization of the Gribov-Glauber theory, QCD factorization theorems, and the HERA QCD analysis of diffraction in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering (DIS). We apply this technique for the analysis of a wide range of hard processes with nuclei---inclusive DIS on deuterons, medium-range and heavy nuclei, coherent and incoherent diffractive DIS with nuclei, and hard diffraction in proton-nucleus scattering---and make predictions for the effect of nu…
We present a detailed study of prompt photon production cross section in heavy-ion collisions in the central rapidity region at energy of $\sqrt{s}=5.5$ TeV, appropriate to LHC experiment. We include the next-to-leading order radiative corrections, $O(α_{em}α_s^2)$, nuclear shadowing and the parton energy loss effects. We find that the nuclear effects can reduce the invariant cross section for prompt photon production by an order of magnitude at $p_t=3$ GeV. We discuss theoretical uncertainties due to parton energy loss and nuclear shadowing parameters. We show that the K-factor, which signifi…
Nuclear structure functions at small x and small or moderate $Q^2$ are studied using the relation with diffraction on nucleons which arises from Gribov's Reggeon Calculus. A reasonable description of experimental data is obtained with no fitted parameters. A comparison with other models and predictions for future lepton-ion colliders are provided. Consequences for the reduction of multiplicities in nucleus-nucleus collisions at energies of RHIC and LHC are examined.
The measurement of the nuclear structure function $F_2^A (x,Q^2)$ at the future electron-ion collider (EIC) will be of great relevance to understand the origin of the nuclear shadowing and to probe gluon saturation effects. Currently there are several phenomenological models, based on very distinct approaches, which describe the scarce experimental data quite successfully. One of main uncertainties comes from the schemes used to include the effects associated to the multiple scatterings and to unitarize the cross section. In this paper we compare the predictions of three different unitarizatio…
We explore the potential of an Electron Ion Collider to determine nuclear modifications of PDFs. We find that gluon shadowing can be accurately measured down to x=0.001, and discuss the possibility of detecting non--linear QCD effects with inclusive measurements.
The interaction of spatially small dipoles with nucleons, nuclei is calculated in the DGLAP approximation at the top of HERA energies and found to be close to the $S$-channel unitarity limit in the case of the color octet dipoles. The DGLAP analyses of the current diffractive data appear to support this conclusion as they indicate a $\sim 30-40%$ probability of the gluon induced diffraction for $Q^2\sim 4 $GeV$^2$. The need for the high-precision measurements of the $t$-dependence of inclusive and exclusive diffraction for pinpointing higher twist effects in the gluon sector is emphasized. The …
We make predictions for the cross sections of coherent photoproduction of $ρ$, $ϕ$, $J/ψ$, $ψ(2S)$, and $Υ(1S)$ mesons in Pb-Pb ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV in the kinematics of run 2 at the Large Hadron Collider extending the approaches successfully describing the available Pb-Pb UPC data at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV. Our results illustrate the important roles of hadronic fluctuations of the photon and inelastic nuclear shadowing in photoproduction of light vector mesons on nuclei and the large leading twist nuclear gluon shadowing in photoproduction of quarkon…
Future electron-ion colliders (eIC) will focus on the unitarity properties of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) in the limit of strong nuclear absorption. Strong nuclear shadowing and a large abundance of coherent diffraction are the most striking consequences of unitarity, and here we report quantitative predictions for these effects in the kinematical range of the planned eIC.
The quarkonium hadroproduction in association with a photon at high energies provides a probe of the dynamics of the strong interactions as it is dependent on the nuclear gluon distribution. Therefore, it could be used to constrain the behavior of the nuclear gluon distribution in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. Such processes are useful to single out the magnitude of the shadowing/antishadowing effects in the nuclear parton densities. In this work we investigate the influence of nuclear effects in the production of JPsi + photon and Upsilon + photon and estimate the transverse …
In this paper, we discuss the feasibility of measuring deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) on nuclei in a collider setting, as for example, the planned high-luminosity Electron-Ion-Collider (EIC). We demonstrate that employing our recent model for nuclear generalized parton distributions (nGPDs), the one-photon unpolarized DVCS cross section as well as the azimuthal- and spin asymmetry are of the same size as in the proton case. This will allow for an experimental extraction of nuclear GPDs with high precision shedding new light on nuclear shadowing at small $x_{bj}$ and the interplay of …
We had been gradually working towards building a comprehensive quarkonia suppression formalism to explain all 3 dependencies of quarkonium suppression obtained from heavy-ion collision experiments. We present here the improved version of quarkonia suppression framework. It assumes bottomonia produced in the early stage which dissociates due to color screening, gluonic dissociation, and collisional damping in addition to the shadowing as an initial state effect. The QGP medium formed in the collisions is assumed to evolve under ($3+1$)-dimensional relativistic viscous hydrodynamics which is mod…
Gribov approach to high-energy interactions of hadrons and nuclei is reviewed and applied to calculation of particle production in heavy-ions collisions. It is pointed out that the AGK (Abramovsky, Gribov, Kancheli) cutting rules is a powerful tool to investigate particle spectra in these processes. It leads, in the Glauber approximation, to a simple formula for the density of hadrons produced in the central rapidity region in nucleus-nucleus interactions. An estimate of this density for RHIC and LHC is presented and compared with results of Monte-Carlo calculations. It is shown that the Glaub…
With the imminent construction of an electron-ion collider in the USA, both saturation physics and nuclear shadowing physics will be important for the same processes for the first time. In particular for exclusive production of vector mesons, such as the J/$ψ$. In this paper we investigate the underlying assumptions commonly made when phenomenologically investigating this process from a shadowing and saturation perspective respectively. We use the bSat model which is commonly used to describe saturation physics, and a calculation by M.G. Ryskin which is commonly used when describing nuclear sh…
Using the general notion of cross section fluctuations in hadron--nucleus scattering at high energies, we derive an expression for the cross section of incoherent $J/ψ$ photoproduction on heavy nuclei $dσ_{γA \to J/ψY}/dt$, which includes both elastic $dσ_{γp \to J/ψp}/dt$ and proton-dissociation $dσ_{γp \to J/ψY}/dt$ photoproduction on target nucleons. We find that with good accuracy, $dσ_{γA \to J/ψY}/dt$ can be expressed as a product of the sum of the $dσ_{γp \to J/ψp}/dt$ and $dσ_{γp \to J/ψY}/dt$ cross sections, which have been measured at HERA, and the common nuclear shadowing factor, wh…
The comparison of photoproduction cross sections for $c\bar{c}$ and b-b(bar) in PbPb and pPb collisions can give sensitivity to nuclear shadowing effects. The photoproduction of vector mesons is even more sensitive to the underlying gluon distributions. In this study we present the cross sections and rapidity dependence of the photoproduction of heavy quarks and exclusive production of vector mesons in ultraperipheral pPb and PbPb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at sqrt(s_NN)=5 TeV and sqrt(s_NN)=2.76$ TeV, respectively. The potentials of using these processes for constraining nuclear …
A polarized ep/eA collider (Electron-Ion Collider, or EIC) with variable center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) ~ 20-70 GeV and a luminosity ~ 10^{34} cm^{-2} s^{-1} would be uniquely suited to address several outstanding questions of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and the microscopic structure of hadrons and nuclei: (i) the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon in QCD (sea quark and gluon spatial distributions, orbital motion, polarization, correlations); (ii) the fundamental color fields in nuclei (nuclear parton densities, shadowing, coherence effects, color transparency); (iii) the conversion of…
Photoproduction of heavy quarks in ultraperipheral collisions can help elucidate important features of the physics of heavy quarks in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Due to the dependence on parton distributions it can also potentially offer some constraining ability in the determination of nuclear parton distributions. In the present study we consider next-to-leading order (NLO) photoproduction of heavy quarks in ultraperipheral proton-proton (pp), proton-nucleus (pA), and nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Total cross sections and rapidity distributions ar…
The effect of shadowing on the early state of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is investigated along with transverse energy and hard process production, specifically Drell-Yan, $J/ψ$, and $Υ$ production. We choose several parton distributions and parameterizations of nuclear shadowing, as well as the spatial dependence of shadowing, to study the influence of shadowing on relevant observables. Results are presented for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.5$ TeV.
Motivated by the recent results for DIS off nuclei from the HERMES experiment we have performed a systematic study of shadowing for transverse and longitudinal photons. We found that the coherence length which controls the onset of nuclear shadowing at small x_{Bj} is much longer for longitudinal than transverse photons, and is much shorter for shadowing of gluons. The light-cone Green function approach we apply properly treats shadowing in the transition region x_{Bj}>0.01. It also incorporates the nonperturbative effects and is legitimate at small Q^2. We calculate nuclear shadowing and comp…
The exclusive photoproduction of upsilon states $Υ(1S)$ and its radially excited states $Υ(2S,3S)$ is investigated in the context of ultra-peripheral collisions at the LHC energies. Predictions are presented for their production in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collision at the energies available at the LHC run 2. The rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are shown, and the robustness of the model is tested against the experimental results considering $ψ(1S,2S)$ and $Υ(1S)$ states. The theoretical framework considered in the analysis is the light-cone color dipole …
We study photon-induced coherent production of Upsilon in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions at LHC and demonstrate that the counting rates will be sufficient to measure nuclear shadowing of generalized gluon distributions. This will establish the transition from the regime of color transparency to the regime of perturbative color opacity in an unambiguous way. We argue that such measurements will provide the possibility to investigate the interaction of ultra-small color dipoles with nuclei in QCD at large energies, which are beyond the reach of the electron-nucleon (nucleus) colliders, and…
We explain the early onset of shadowing in nuclear photoabsorption within a multiple scattering approach and discuss its relation to in-medium modifications of the rho^0.
We explore how nuclear modifications to the nucleon parton distributions affect production of high-$p_T$ hadrons in heavy ion collisions. We perform a leading order calculation of the high-$p_T$ charged pion, kaon and proton spectra using standard fragmentation functions and shadowing parameterizations. We also consider alternate models of shadowing. Near midrapidity, shadowing is a small effect and cannot explain the large observed suppression of high-$p_T$ hadrons. We also consider the isospin difference between protons and nuclei and find that it is also a small effect on high-$p_T$ hadron …
Coherent exclusive vector meson electroproduction is a key physics channel at an electron-ion collider. It probes the gluon structure of nuclei over a wide range of $Q^2$, and can be used to measure nuclear shadowing and to search for gluon saturation and/or the colored glass condensate. In this paper, we present calculations of the kinematic distributions for a variety of exclusive vector meson final states: the $ρ$, $ϕ$, J/$ψ$, $ψ'$ and the $Υ$ states. The cross-sections for light and $c\overline c$ mesons are large, while $Υ$ states should be produced in moderate numbers at a medium energy …
Heavy quarkonium production in ultra-peripheral nuclear collisions (UPC) is described within the QCD dipole formalism. Realistic quarkonium wave functions in the $Q\bar Q$ rest frame are calculated by solving the Schrödinger equation with a subsequent Lorentz boost to high energy. We rely on several realistic $Q\bar Q$ potentials, which allow to describe well the quarkonium masses and decay widths, as well as data on diffractive electroproduction of quarkonia on protons. Nuclear effects are calculated with the phenomenological dipole cross sections fitted to DIS data. The higher twist quark sh…
We consider deep inelastic scattering off nuclei in the Regge limit within the Glauber-Gribov model. Using unitarized parton distribution functions for the proton, we find sizeable shadowing effects on the nuclear total and longitudinal structure functions, $F_2^A$ and $F_L^A$, in the low-x limit. Extending a fan-diagram analysis for the large-mass region of coherent diffraction off nuclei to high Q2, we also find significant shadowing effects in this kinematical regime. Finally, we discuss shortcomings of our approach and possible extensions of the model to other kinematical regimes.
Nuclear shadowing in DIS at moderately small $x$ is suppressed by the nuclear formfactor and depends on the effective mass of a hadronic fluctuation of the virtual photon. We propose a solution to the problems (i) of how to combine a definite transverse size of the fluctuation with a definite effective mass, and (ii) of how to include the nuclear formfactor in the higher multiple scattering terms. Comparison of the numerical results with known approximations shows a substantial difference.
Gluon shadowing which is the main source of nuclear effects for production of heavy flavored hadrons, remains unknown. We develop a light-cone dipole approach aiming at simplifying the calculations of nuclear shadowing for heavy flavor production, as well as the cross section which does not need next-to-leading and higher order corrections. A substantial process dependence of gluon shadowing is found at the scale of charm mass manifesting a deviation from QCD factorization. The magnitude of the shadowing effect correlates with the symmetry properties and color state of the produced c-cbar pair…
Various shadowing aspects of nuclear parton distributions are discussed in a parton-model framework. We explain existing $x$ dependent data of $F_2^A/F_2^D$, then the model is applied to a flavor asymmetry $\bar u-\bar d$ in a nucleus, to shadowing in valence-quark distributions, and to nuclear dependence of $Q^2$ evolution. First, we find that a finite nuclear $\bar u-\bar d$ distribution could be possible due to nuclear interactions even in the flavor symmetric case in the nucleon ($\bar u -\bar d$=0). Second, it is indicated that valence-quark shadowing could be used for discriminating amon…
The phenomenon of shadowing of nuclear structure functions at small values of Bjorken-$x$ is analyzed. First, multiple scattering is discussed as the underlying physical mechanism. In this context three different but related approaches are presented: Glauber-like rescatterings, Gribov inelastic shadowing and ideas based on high-density Quantum Chromodynamics. Next, different parametrizations of nuclear partonic distributions based on fit analysis to existing data combined with Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution, are reviewed. Finally, a comparison of the different approaches …
We estimate the perturbative nuclear shadowing in the nuclear structure function $F_2^A(x,Q^2)$, mainly at the kinematic region of HERA using the Glauber-Mueller approach. The contributions of the quark and gluon sectors to the nuclear shadowing are estimated. We predict that the nuclear shadowing corrections are important and that saturation of the ratio $R_1 = F_2^{A}(x,Q^2)/A F^p_2(x,Q^2)$ occurs once the shadowing in the gluon sector is considered.
Nuclear shadowing arises from multiple scattering of the hadronic fluctuations of the virtual photon in a nucleus. We predict different longitudinal and transverse shadowing and an A-dependence of R which can be up to a 50% effect. The possibility of detecting nuclear effects on R at HERA is discussed.
We use several diverse parameterizations of diffractive parton distributions, extracted in leading twist QCD analyses of the HERA diffractive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) data, to make predictions for leading twist nuclear shadowing of nuclear quark and gluon distributions in DIS on nuclei. We find that the HERA diffractive data are sufficiently precise to allow us to predict large nuclear shadowing for gluons and quarks, unambiguously. We performed detailed studies of nuclear shadowing for up and charm sea quarks and gluons within several scenarios of shadowing and diffractive slopes, as w…
Recent HERA low $Q^2$ data show that the logarithmic slope of the protonstructure function ($\frac{\partial F_2}{\partial \ln Q^2}$) is significantly different from perturbative QCD expectations for smallvalues of $Q^2$ at exeedingly small values of $x$. We show that shadowing (screening) corrections provide a natural explanation for this experimental observation.
We report a semi-analytical approach for the solution of the nonlinear Gribov-Levin-Ryskin-Mueller-Qiu (GLR-MQ) evolution equation for sea quark distribution and investigate the effect of gluon shadowing on the small-x and moderate-Q^2 behaviour of singlet structure function, F_2^S(x,Q^2). The predicted values of singlet structure functions with shadowing corrections are comparable with different experimental data as well as parametrizations. It is very fascinating to observe signatures of gluon recombination in our predictions. We note that, with decreasing x the the rapid growth of singlet s…
We calculate, in the Glauber-Mueller approach, the ratio of the diffractive dissociation cross section to the total cross section on nuclei. We observe that shadowing corrections (SC) are significant, in the calculated $\ddt$ ratio but they do not lead to a smooth energy dependence of the ratio for a proton target as was observed at HERA.
We study the shadowing effect in highly asymmetric diffractive interactions of left-handed and right-handed W-bosons with atomic nuclei. The target nucleus is found to be quite transparent for the charmed-strange Fock component of the light-cone W^+ in the helicity state λ=+1 and rather opaque for the c\bar s dipole with λ=-1. The shadowing correction to the structure function ΔxF_3 = xF_3^{νN}-xF_3^{\barνN} extracted from νFe and \barνFe data is shown to make up about 20% in the kinematical range of CCFR/NuTeV.
We discuss shadowing corrections to the structure function $F_2$ in neutrino deep-inelastic scattering on heavy nuclear targets. In particular, we examine the role played by shadowing in the comparison of the structure functions $F_2$ measured in neutrino and muon deep inelastic scattering. The importance of shadowing corrections in the determination of the strange quark distributions is explained.
The effect of shadowing on the early state of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions and transverse energy production is discussed. Results are presented for RHIC Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV and LHC Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.5$ TeV.
Within a light-cone QCD formalism based on the Green function technique incorporating color transparency and coherence length effects we study nuclear shadowing in deep-inelastic scattering at moderately small Bjorken x_{Bj}. Calculations performed so far were based only on approximations leading to an analytical harmonic oscillatory form of the Green function. We present for the first time an exact numerical solution of the evolution equation for the Green function using realistic form of the dipole cross section and nuclear density function. We compare numerical results for nuclear shadowing…
Nuclear parton distributions are studied in a parton model with rescaling and recombination mechanisms. Parton x distributions are first calculated at Q^2=1 GeV^2 by the model, and they are evolved to larger Q^2 in order to be compared with various F_2 data. The experimental shadowing is explained by the parton-recombination effects. Then, the modification of sea-quark and gluon distributions is investigated. We show x and Q^2 dependent results of the ratios S_A/S_D and G_A/G_D. They indicate significant shadowing at small x and large ratios in the medium-x region. Our theoretical results shou…
We generalize the leading twist theory of nuclear shadowing and calculate quark and gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of spinless nuclei. We predict very large nuclear shadowing for nuclear GPDs. In the limit of the purely transverse momentum transfer, our nuclear GPDs become impact-parameter-dependent nuclear parton distributions (PDFs). Nuclear shadowing induces nontrivial correlations between the impact parameter b and the light-cone fraction x. We make predictions for the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) amplitude and the DVCS cross section on Pb-208 at high energies. W…
We investigate shadowing effects in deep-inelastic scattering from nuclei at small values $x<0.1$ of the Bjorken variable. Unifying aspects of generalized vector meson dominance and color transparency we first develop a model for deep-inelastic scattering from free nucleons at small $x$. In application to nuclear targets we find that the coherent interaction of quark-antiquark fluctuations with nucleons in a nucleus leads to the observed shadowing at $x<0.1$. We compare our results with most of the recent data for a large variety of nuclei and examine in particular the $Q^2$ dependence of the …
