Lepton Flavor Violating (LFV) processes are clear signals of physics beyond the Standard Model. We investigate the possibility of measuring this kind of processes at present and foreseeable future muon-electron colliders, taking into account present day bounds from existing experiments. As a model of new physics we consider a Z' boson with a $U'(1)$ gauge symmetry and generic couplings. Processes that violate lepton flavor by two units seem to be particularly promising.
Flavor violating processes in the lepton sector have highly suppressed branching ratios in the standard model. Thus, observation of lepton flavor violation (LFV) constitutes a clear indication of physics beyond the standard model (BSM). We review new physics searches in the processes that violate the conservation of lepton (muon) flavor by two units with muonia and muonium--antimuonium oscillations.
Electric dipole moments (EDMs) of elementary particles are powerful probes of new physics with flavor-diagonal CP violation. The reported discrepancy in the muon anomalous magnetic moment motivates us to explore to what extent new physics with flavor-diagonal CP violation to address the discrepancy is probed by searches for the muon EDM. As a benchmark, we focus on a CP-violating two-Higgs-doublet model to explain the muon $g-2$ anomaly where the muon exclusively couples to one Higgs doublet. Since contributions to flavor violating processes as well as the electron EDM are suppressed, the muon…
We investigate the impact of extra leptons on observed tensions in the muon $g-2$ and the first-row CKM unitarity. By introducing a new SU(2)$_L$ doublet lepton and a SU(2)$_L$ triplet lepton, we find that both of the tensions can be explained simultaneously under constraints from electroweak precision observables and Higgs-boson decays. Our model could be tested by measurements of $h\toμμ$ at future collider experiments.
We study the prospects and opportunities of a large muon electric dipole moment (EDM) of the order (10^{-24} - 10^{-22}) ecm. We investigate how natural such a value is within the general minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with CP violation from lepton flavor violation in view of the experimental constraints. In models with hybrid gauge-gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking a large muon EDM is indicative for the structure of flavor breaking at the Planck scale, and points towards a high messenger scale.
The $μ^-e^-\to e^-e^-$ process in a muonic atom is one of the promising probes to study the charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV). We have investigated the angular distribution of electrons from the polarized muon of the atomic bound state. The parity violating asymmetric distribution of electrons is analyzed by using lepton wave functions under the Coulomb interaction of a finite nuclear charge distribution. It is found that the asymmetry parameters of electrons are very sensitive to the chiral structure of the CLFV interaction and the contact/photonic interaction. Therefore, together with t…
We study a lepton portal dark matter model, motivated by the deviation of the $W$ boson mass reported by the CDF collaboration. We introduce vector-like leptons and a scalar dark matter (DM) which exclusively couples to the extra leptons and muon. The one-loop corrections induced by the new particles can shift the $W$ boson mass. Besides, the discrepancy in the muon anomalous magnetic moment and the DM density can simultaneously be explained by this setup, if the vector-like lepton is lighter than 200 GeV and nearly degenerate with the DM particle. We also see that the constraints on such a li…
We propose a new process of mu(-) e(-) -> e(-) e(-) in a muonic atom for a quest of charged lepton flavor violation. The Coulomb attraction from the nucleus in a heavy muonic atom leads to significant enhancement in its rate, compared to mu(+) e(-) -> e(+) e(-). The upper limit of the branching ratio is estimated to be of the orders of O[10^(-17)-10^(-18)] for the photonic and the four Fermi interactions from the present experimental constraints. The search for this process could serve complementarily with the other relevant processes to shed lights upon the nature of charged lepton flavor vio…
The observation of a charged-lepton flavor violating process would be a definite sign for physics beyond the Standard Model, but would actually only prove that one particular linear combination of lepton numbers is violated. We categorize lepton-flavor-violating processes by their quantum numbers and show how their discovery can be interpreted model independently, studying in particular which processes are required to establish that the entire flavor group is broken. We also comment on total lepton number, seeing as lepton number violation practically implies lepton flavor violation as well.
We report on the recent results of searches for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays as well as lepton-number-violating B decays with the world-highest data samples accumulated at the Belle.
We propose a novel possibility to detect a very distinctive signal with more than four muons originating from pair-produced vector-like leptons decaying to a muon-philic $Z^\prime$ boson. These new particles are good candidates to explain the anomalies in the muon anomalous magnetic moment and the $b\to s\ell\ell$ processes. The doublet (singlet) vector-like leptons lighter than 1.3 (1.0) TeV are excluded by the latest data at the LHC if $\mathrm{BR}(E\to Z^\prime μ) = 1$. We also show that the excess in the signal region with more than five leptons can be explained by this scenario if the vec…
Implications of a simple model for the mass generation of leptons are studied, in particular for the upcoming long-baseline neutrino experiments. The flavor mixing angles are large (nearly maximal). The probability for the long-baseline ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_e oscillation is predicted to be about 1%.
The small difference between the survival probabilities of muon neutrino and antineutrino beams, traveling through earth matter in a long baseline experiment such as MINOS, is shown to be an important measure of any possible deviation from maximality in the flavor mixing of those states.
A light leptophilic boson (scalar or pseudoscalar) has been postulated to explain the muon g-2 anomaly and could be a portal to dark matter. Realizing the leptophilic nature of a singlet boson in the framework of the two-Higgs-doublet-Model of type-X, we identify the parameter space viable for the explanation of the updated muon g-2 discrepancy. It is then shown that such a hypothetical particle will be unambiguously ruled out or discovered via the Yukawa process at a lepton collider designed as a Higgs factory.
We consider supersymmetric (SUSY) models for the muon $g-2$ anomaly without flavor violating masses at the tree-level. The models can avoid LHC constraints and the vacuum stability constraint in the stau-Higgs potential. Although large flavor violating processes are not induced within the framework of minimal SUSY standard model, once we adopt a seesaw model, sizable lepton flavor violating (LFV) processes such as $μ\to e γ$ and $μ\to e$ conversion are induced. These LFV processes will be observed at future experiments such as MEG-II, COMET and Mu2e if right-handed neutrinos are heavier than $…
We present a model for calculating charged-lepton mixing matrices. These matrices are an essential ingredient for predicting lepton flavor-violating rates in the lepton number nonuniversal models recently proposed to explain anomalies in B-meson decays. The model is based on work on "constrained flavor breaking" by Appelquist, Bai and Piai relating the charged-lepton mass matrix, M_l, to those for the up and down-type quarks, M_{u,d}. We use our recent model of lepton nonuniversality to illustrate the magnitudes of flavor-violating B-decay rates that might be expected. Decays with mu tau final…
We study the lepton flavor violating process, $e+ T \to τ+T'$, at a few GeV. This process can be studied by experiments directing GeV scale electron or positron beams on internal or fixed targets. We study the effects of some low energy lepton flavor violating interactions on this process. We study the sensitivities of this process on these low energy lepton flavor violating interactions and compare them to the sensitivities of lepton flavor violating $τ$ decay processes. Comparing with $τ$ decay processes, this process provides another way to study the lepton flavor violating effects with $e-…
Neutrino masses and mixings have important implications for models of fermion masses, and, most directly, for the charged lepton sector. We consider supersymmetric Abelian flavor models, where neutrino mass parameters are related to those of charged leptons and sleptons. We show that processes such as τto μγ, μto eγand μ-e conversion provide interesting probes. In particular, some existing models are excluded by current bounds, while many others predict rates within reach of proposed near future experiments. We also construct models in which the predicted rates for charged lepton flavor violat…
The simplest realization of the inverse seesaw mechanism in a $SU(3)_C \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X$ gauge theory offers striking flavor correlations between rare charged lepton flavor violating decays and the measured neutrino oscillations parameters. The predictions follow from the gauge structure itself without the need for any flavor symmetry. Such tight complementarity between charged lepton flavor violation and oscillations renders the scenario strictly testable.
Recently, it was pointed out that the electron and muon g-2 discrepancies can be explained simultaneously by a flavor-violating axion-like particle (ALP). We show that the parameter regions favored by the muon g-2 are already excluded by the muonium-antimuonium oscillation bound. In contrast, those for the electron g-2 can be consistent with this bound when the ALP is heavier than 1.5 GeV. We propose to search for a signature of the same-sign and same-flavor lepton pairs and the forward-backward muon asymmetry to test the model at the Belle II experiment.
The recently proposed MUonE experiment at CERN aims at providing a novel determination of the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment through the study of elastic muon-electron scattering at relatively small momentum transfer. The anticipated accuracy of the order of 10ppm demands for high-precision predictions, including all the relevant radiative corrections. The fixed-order NNLO radiative corrections due to the emission of virtual and real leptonic pairs are described and their numerical impact is discussed for typical event selections of the MUonE experime…
We propose a leptoquark model with two scalar leptoquarks $S^{}_1 \left( \bar{3},1,\frac{1}{3} \right)$ and $\widetilde{R}^{}_2 \left(3,2,\frac{1}{6} \right)$ to give a combined explanation of neutrino masses, lepton flavor mixing and the anomaly of muon $g-2$, satisfying the constraints from the radiative decays of charged leptons. The neutrino masses are generated via one-loop corrections resulting from a mixing between $S^{}_1$ and $\widetilde{R}^{}_2$. With a set of specific textures for the leptoquark Yukawa coupling matrices, the neutrino mass matrix possesses an approximate $μ$-$τ$ refl…
In the minimal Standard Model (SM) with four generations (the so called SM4) and in "standard" two Higgs doublets model (2HDM) setups, e.g., the type II 2HDM with four fermion generations, the contribution of the 4th family heavy leptons to the muon magnetic moment is suppressed and cannot accommodate the measured $ \sim 3 σ$ access with respect to the SM prediction. We show that in a 2HDM for the 4th generation (the 4G2HDM), which we view as a low energy effective theory for dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, with one of the Higgs doublets coupling only to the 4th family leptons and qua…
We examine single chargino production in conjunction with R-parity lepton number violation in future lepton-lepton collisions. Present bounds on R-parity violating couplings allow for a production cross section of the order of ${\cal{O}} (10 {fb})$ for a wide range of sneutrino and chargino masses. Scenarios of chargino decay which lead to purely leptonic signals in the final state and without missing energy are also discussed.
We propose a model for the vector-like lepton to explain the small muon mass by a seesaw mechanism, based on lepton-specific two Higgs doublet models with a local $U(1)'$ symmetry. There is no bare muon mass for a nonzero $U(1)'$ charge of the leptophilic Higgs doublet, so the physical muon mass is generated due to the mixing between the vector-like lepton and the muon after the leptophilic Higgs doublet and the dark Higgs get VEVs. In this scenario, the non-decoupling effects of the vector-like lepton give rise to leading contributions to the muon $g-2$, thanks to the light $Z'$ and the light…
We explore the possibility of the existence of excited leptons in the light of recent data on muon $g - 2$ from BNL. We have been able to put stringent bounds on the relevant parameter space.
Significant deviations from Standard Model (SM) predictions have been observed in $ b \to s μ^+ μ^-$ decays and in the muon $g-2$. Scalar leptoquark extensions of the SM are known to be able to address these anomalies, but generically give rise to lepton flavor violation (LFV) or even proton decay. We propose new muon flavored gauge symmetries as a guiding principle for leptoquark models that preserve the global symmetries of the SM and explain the non-observation of LFV. A minimal model is shown to easily accommodate the anomalies without encountering other experimental constraints. This talk…
Contributions of hadronic effects to the muonium physics and anomalous magnetic moment of muon are considered. Special attention is paid to higher-order effects and the uncertainty related to the hadronic contribution to the hyperfine structure interval in the ground state of muonium.
In the light of the recent measurement of the muon anmalous magnetic moment $a_μ$ by the Muon $(g-2)$ Collaboration, we examine the contribution to $a_μ$ from the exchange of flavor changing scalars. Assuming that the heavier generations have larger flavor changing couplings, we obtain a bound on $μ- τ$ Yukawa coupling for a given scalar mass. Constraints on other flavor changing/conserving couplings are also obtained from the lepton flavor violating decays of muon and tau lepton, and bounds on the branching ratio of $τ\to 3 e$, $μ\to 3 e$ and $τ\to e μe$ processes are predicted.
In this paper, we consider the Standard Model (SM) with one family of vector-like (VL) leptons, which couple to all three families of the SM leptons. We study the constraints on this model coming from the heavy charged lepton mass bound, electroweak precision data, the muon anomalous magnetic moment, lepton flavor violation, Higgs decay constraints and a recently measured lepton non-universality observable, $R_{K^{*0}}$. We find that the strongest constraints are coming from the muon $g-2, \ R_{μμ}=Γ(h\toμμ)/Γ(h\toμμ)_\text{SM}, \ R_{γγ}$ and $\text{BR}(μ\to eγ)$. Although VL leptons couple to…
Supersymmetric theories generally have new flavor and CP violation sources in the squark and slepton mass matrices. They will contribute to the lepton flavor violation processes, such as $μ\to e γ$, which can be probed far below the current bound with an intense muon source at the front end of the muon collider. In addition, if sleptons can be produced at the muon collider, the flavor violation can occur at their production and decay, allowing us to probe the flavor mixing structure directly. Asymmetry between numbers of $μ^+ e^-$ and $e^+ μ^-$ events will be a sign for CP violation in supersy…
In the standard model (SM), lepton flavor violating (LFV) Higgs decay is absent at renormalizable level and thus it is a good probe to new physics. In this article we study a type of new physics that could lead to large LFV Higgs decay, i.e., a lepton-flavored dark matter (DM) model which is specified by a Majorana DM and scalar lepton mediators. Different from other similar models with similar setup, we introduce both left-handed and right-handed scalar leptons. They allow large LFV Higgs decay and thus may explain the tentative Br$(h\raτμ)\sim1\%$ experimental results from the LHC. In partic…
We propose a SUSY scenario to explain the current electron and muon $g-2$ discrepancies without introducing lepton flavor mixings. Threshold corrections to the Yukawa couplings can enhance the electron $g-2$ and flip the sign of the SUSY contributions. The mechanism predicts a flavor-dependent slepton mass spectrum. We show that it is compatible with the Higgs mediation scenario.
The differential energy distribution for electrons and taus produced from lepton pair production from muons in transit through materials is numerically evaluated. We use the differential cross section to calculate underground lepton fluxes from an incident atmospheric muon flux, considering contributions from both conventional and prompt fluxes. An approximate form for the charged current differential neutrino cross section is provided and used to calculate single lepton production from atmospheric neutrinos. We compare the fluxes of underground leptons produced from incident muons with those …
The Lepton Portal Dark Matter model, in which dark matter states only coupling to the charged leptons, can explain the excess of the muon anomalous magnetic moment measured by the Muon $g - 2$ experiment. In this paper, we demonstrate that real, charge-neutral scalar dark matter with a large number of internal degrees of freedom and a mass approximately degenerate with the charged fermionic mediator state can accommodate the $(g - 2)_μ$ excess. The model remains consistent with the dark matter relic abundance, direct detection, and indirect detection constraints. The dark matter and its charge…
Coherent production of lepton pair in muon scattering by nucleus is considered. With the help of different approaches (equivalent photon approximation, direct numerical and analytical calculations) we obtain total cross section of this reaction and distributions over invariant masses of final leptons. Special attention is paid to influence of final lepton identity on total and differential cross sections. We also study the role of coherence condition. Total cross sections of charmonia production in muon interaction with electromagnetic field of nucleus are also presented.
Models of minimal lepton flavor violation where the seesaw scale is higher than the relevant flavor scale predict that all lepton flavor violation is proportional to the charged lepton Yukawa matrix. If extra vector-like leptons are within the reach of the LHC, it will be possible to test the resulting predictions in ATLAS/CMS.
An accurate simulation of the propagation of muons through matter is needed for the analysis of data produced by muon/neutrino underground experiments. A muon may sustain hundreds of interactions before it is detected by the experiment. Since a small systematic uncertainty repeated hundreds of times may lead to sizable errors, requirements on the precision of the muon propagation code are very stringent. A new tool for propagating muon and tau charged leptons through matter that is believed to meet these requirements is presented here. An overview of the program is given and some results of it…
We discuss the impact of fermion mass matrices on some lepton number violating processes, namely baryogenesis via leptogenesis and neutrinoless double beta decay, and on some lepton flavor violating processes, namely radiative lepton decays in supersymmetric seesaw models.

The leptons are viewed as composite objects, exhibiting anomalous magnetic moments and anomalous flavor-changing transition moments. The decay $μ\to e γ$ is expected to occur with a branching ratio of the same order as the present experimental limit.
A muon collider would be a powerful probe of flavor violation in new physics. There is a strong complementary case for collider measurements and precision low-energy probes of lepton flavor violation (as well as CP violation). We illustrate this by studying the collider reach in a supersymmetric scenario with flavor-violating slepton mixing. We find that the collider could discover sleptons and measure the slepton and neutralino masses with high precision, enabling event reconstruction that could cleanly separate flavor-violating new physics signals from Standard Model backgrounds. The discove…
Lepton number is promoted to an $U(1)_L$ gauge symmetry in a simple extension of the standard model. The spontaneous breaking of $U(1)_L$ by three units allows a conserved $Z_3^L$ lepton symmetry to remain, guaranteeing that neutrinos are Dirac fermions, which acquire naturally small masses from a previously proposed mechanism. Dark matter appears as a singlet scalar, with dark symmetry $Z_3^D$ derivable from $Z_3^L$. Muon $g-2$ may be explained.
We show that the observed anomalies in the lepton sector can be explained in extensions of the Standard Model that are natural and, therefore, resolve the Higgs sector hierarchy problem. The scale of new physics is around the TeV and Technicolor-like theories are ideal candidate models.
We extend the notion of Minimal Flavor Violation to the lepton sector. We introduce a symmetry principle which allows us to express lepton flavor violation in the charged lepton sector in terms of neutrino masses and mixing angles. We explore the dependence of the rates for flavor changing radiative charged lepton decays (ell(i) -> ell(j) + gamma) and mu-to-e conversion in nuclei on the scales for total lepton number violation, lepton flavor violation and the neutrino masses and mixing angles. Measurable rates are obtained when the scale for total lepton number violation is much larger than th…
In this work we compute all relevant contributions stemming from the economical 3-3-1 model to the muon magnetic moment and the lepton flavor violation decay $μ\rightarrow eγ$. Using the current bounds on these phenomena, we derive lower limits on the scale of symmetry breaking of the model. Moreover, taking into account existing limits from meson and collider studies we show that there is still room for a possible signal in $μ\rightarrow eγ$ in the near future.
The recent experimental status, including the confirmation of the muon $g-2$ anomaly at Fermilab, indicates a Beyond Standard Model (BSM) satisfying the following properties: 1) it enhances the $g-2$ 2) suppresses flavor violations, such as $μ\to e γ$, 3) suppresses CP violations, such as the electron electric dipole moment (EDM). In this letter, I show that if the masses of heavy leptons are generated radiatively, the eigenbasis of the mass matrix and higher dimensional photon operators can be automatically aligned. As a result, the muon $g-2$ is enhanced but the EDM of the electron and $μ\to…
In this talk, I will present the status of lepton flavor physics in composite Higgs models with partial compositeness in the light of recent data in the lepton sector. I will consider anarchic flavor setups, scenarios with flavor symmetries, and minimal incarnations of the see-saw mechanism that naturally predict non-negligible lepton compositeness. The focus will be on lepton flavor violating processes, dipole moments, and on probes of lepton flavor universality, all providing stringent tests of partial compositeness. The expected size of effects in the different approaches to lepton flavor a…
A deep inerastic scattering process \mutau is discussed to study lepton flavor violation between muons and tau leptons. In supersymmetric models, the Higgs boson mediated diagrams could be important for this reaction. We find that at a muon energy ($E_μ$) higher than 50 GeV, the predicted cross section significantly increases due to the contribution from sea $b$-quarks. The number of produced tau leptons can be $\mathcal{O}(10^4)$ at $E_μ$= 300 GeV from $10^{20}$ muons, whereas $\mathcal{O}(10^2)$ events are given at $E_μ= 50$ GeV.
In this paper, we summarize phenomenology in lepton portal dark matter (DM) models, where DM couples to leptons and extra leptons/sleptons. There are several possible setups: complex/real scalar DM and Dirac/Majorana fermion DM. In addition, there are choices for the lepton chirality that couples to DM. We discuss the prediction of each model and compare it with the latest experimental constraints from the DM, the LHC, and the flavor experiments. We also propose a simple setup to achieve the discrepancy in the anomalous magnetic moment of muon.
The accurate prediction of the neutrino beam produced in muon decays and the absence of opposite helicity contamination for a particular neutrino flavor make a future neutrino factory the ideal place to look for the lepton flavor violating (LFV) decays of the kind $μ^+\ra e^+\nuebar\numu$ and lepton number violating (LNV) processes like $μ^-\ra e^-\nue\numu$. Excellent sensitivities can be achieved using a detector capable of muon and/or electron identification with charge discrimination. This would allow to set experimental limits that improve current ones by more than two orders of magnitude…
In light of the ongoing effort on reducing the theoretical uncertainties and an upcoming experiment concerning muon magnetic moment, we perform a detailed study of an 3-4-1 electroweak gauge extension of the standard model that contains exotic charged leptons in its spectrum. We discuss flavor changing neutral current, collider and electroweak bounds on the model and derive $1σ$ limits using current and projected limits on the muon magnetic moment. In summary, we exclude the masses of new gauge bosons that couple to muons and heavy charged leptons up to $700$~GeV. Moreover, we find a projected…
Combining the multi-lepton searches at the LHC, we study the possibilities of accommodating the new data of muon and electron $g-2$ anomalies in the lepton-specific inert two-Higgs-doublet model. We take the heavy CP-even Higgs as the 125 GeV Higgs, and find the muon and electron $g-2$ anomalies can be explained simultaneously in the region of 5 GeV $< m_h<60$ GeV, 200 GeV $<m_A< 620$ GeV, 190 GeV $<m_{H^\pm}< 620$ GeV for appropriate Yukawa couplings between leptons and inert Higgs. Meanwhile, the model can give a better fit to the data of lepton universality in $τ$ decays than the SM. Furthe…
