In this paper, we summarize phenomenology in lepton portal dark matter (DM) models, where DM couples to leptons and extra leptons/sleptons. There are several possible setups: complex/real scalar DM and Dirac/Majorana fermion DM. In addition, there are choices for the lepton chirality that couples to DM. We discuss the prediction of each model and compare it with the latest experimental constraints from the DM, the LHC, and the flavor experiments. We also propose a simple setup to achieve the discrepancy in the anomalous magnetic moment of muon.
We propose a new scenario of using the dark axion portal at one-loop level to explain the recently observed muon anomalous magnetic moment by the Fermilab Muon g-2 experiment. Both axion/axion-like particle (ALP) and dark photon are involved in the same vertex with photon. Although ALP or dark photon alone cannot explain muon $g-2$, since the former provides only negative contribution while the latter has very much constrained parameter space, dark axion portal can save the situation and significantly extend the allowed parameter space. The observed muon anomalous magnetic moment provides a ro…
The Lepton Portal Dark Matter model, in which dark matter states only coupling to the charged leptons, can explain the excess of the muon anomalous magnetic moment measured by the Muon $g - 2$ experiment. In this paper, we demonstrate that real, charge-neutral scalar dark matter with a large number of internal degrees of freedom and a mass approximately degenerate with the charged fermionic mediator state can accommodate the $(g - 2)_μ$ excess. The model remains consistent with the dark matter relic abundance, direct detection, and indirect detection constraints. The dark matter and its charge…
We study a lepton portal dark matter model, motivated by the deviation of the $W$ boson mass reported by the CDF collaboration. We introduce vector-like leptons and a scalar dark matter (DM) which exclusively couples to the extra leptons and muon. The one-loop corrections induced by the new particles can shift the $W$ boson mass. Besides, the discrepancy in the muon anomalous magnetic moment and the DM density can simultaneously be explained by this setup, if the vector-like lepton is lighter than 200 GeV and nearly degenerate with the DM particle. We also see that the constraints on such a li…
The dark axion portal is a recently introduced portal between the standard model and the dark sector. It connects both the dark photon and the axion (or axion-like particle) to the photon simultaneously through an anomaly triangle. While the vector portal and the axion portal have been popular venues to search for the dark photon and axion, respectively, the new portal provides new detection channels if they coexist. The dark axion portal is not a result of the simple combination of the two portals, and its value is not determined by the other portal values; it should be tested independently. …
We have built a lepton-specific next-to-minimal two-Higgs-doublet-portal vector dark matter model. The vector dark matter in the hidden sector does not directly couple to the visible sector, but instead annihilates into the hidden Higgs bosons which decay through a small coupling into the CP-odd Higgs bosons. In this model, the Galactic center gamma-ray excess is mainly due to the 2-step cascade annihilation with $τ$'s in the final state. The obtained mass of the CP-odd Higgs $A$ in the Galactic center excess fit can explain the muon $g-2$ anomaly at the 2$σ$ level without violating the string…
We present a model explaining both the 4.2 $σ$ muon $g-2$ anomaly and the relic density of dark matter (DM) in which DM interacts with the Standard Model (SM) via a scalar portal boson $φ$ carrying both dark and SM leptonic numbers, and mediating a nondiagonal interaction between the electron and muon that allows $e \leftrightarrow μ$ transitions. The $φ$ could be produced in high-energy electron scattering off a target nuclei in the reaction $e Z \to μZφ$ followed by the prompt invisible decay $φ~\to$~DM particles and searched for in events with large missing energy accompanied by a single ou…
We propose a novel model which extends the Standard Model (SM) by introducing a $SU(2)_D$ gauge symmetry. In this model, a dark $SU(2)_D$ Higgs doublet and a Higgs bi-doublet can contribute to the muon $g-2$ anomaly and the $W$ boson mass, remaining in tune with the recent experimental results. At the same time, the isospin charged gauge boson of $SU(2)_D$ becomes a plausible candidate for Dark Matter(DM). We find that the resulting parameter space can fit the muon $g-2$, the $W$ boson mass and the DM constraints simultaneously.

We study the recent $e^\pm$ cosmic ray excess reported by DAMPE in a Hidden Valley Model with lepton-portal dark matter. We find the electron-portal can account for the excess well and satisfy the DM relic density and direct detection bounds, while electron+muon/electron+muon+tau-portal suffers from strong constraints from lepton flavor violating observables, such as $μ\to 3 e$. We also discuss possible collider signatures of our model, both at the LHC and a future 100 TeV hadron collider.
A broad program of searches at high intensity experiments during the coming decade and beyond will sensitively probe new light mediator particles interacting through the minimal renormalizable vector, Higgs, and neutrino portals as well as higher-dimension axion-like particle portals. These portals may link the visible and dark sectors and play a critical role in many proposed solutions to some of the big open questions in particle physics and cosmology. In this whitepaper, we survey the theoretical and experimental progress, status, and prospects in the study of minimal dark sector portals.
Annihilating dark matter (DM) models based on a scalar hidden sector with Higgs portal-like couplings to the Standard Model are considered as a possible explanation for recently observed cosmic ray excesses. Two versions of the model are studied, one with non-thermal DM as the origin of the boost factor and one with Sommerfeld enhancement. In the case of non-thermal DM, four hidden sector scalars which transform under a U(1)_{X} symmetry are added. The heaviest scalars decouple and later decay to DM scalars, so providing the boost factor necessary to explain the present DM annihilation rate. T…
A muon jet ($μ$-jet) is a very special feature that consists of a cluster of collimated muons from the decay of a fast moving light particle of mass about $\mathcal{O}$(1 GeV). We will use this feature to search for very light particles from rare decays of the Higgs boson. For such a small angular separation of muons which might come from a long-lived particle, both ATLAS and CMS could have the displaced-vertexing-reconstruction capability. We use two simple models of the Higgs-portal type to explore the possibilities of event topologies with two $2μ$-jets, one $2μ$-jet $\&$ one $4μ$-jet, and …
The current status of the Standard Model prediction for the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is briefly reviewed and compared with the present experimental value.
We propose a novel model for lepton flavor and dark matter based on the $SU(2)_D$ gauge symmetry and vector-like leptons in its fundamental representations. We introduce a dark $SU(2)_D$ Higgs doublet and a Higgs bi-doublet for the mass mixing between the vector-like lepton and the lepton. As a result, the seesaw lepton masses are generated and there are sizable one-loop contributions to the muon $g-2$ via the $SU(2)_D$ gauge bosons and the relatively heavy vector-like lepton, as indicated in Fermilab E989. The tree-level mass mixing between the $Z$ boson and the isospin neutral gauge boson of…
An extended Higgs sector may allow for new scalar particles well below the weak scale. In this work, we present a detailed study of a light scalar $S$ with enhanced coupling to leptons, which could be responsible for the existing discrepancy between experimental and theoretical determinations of the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We present an ultraviolet completion of this model in terms of the lepton-specific two-Higgs doublet model and an additional scalar singlet. We then analyze a plethora of experimental constraints on the universal low energy model, and this UV completion, along with t…

The $μ^+ \to e^+ X$ decay, where $X$ is a dark sector boson, provides one of the strongest available bounds on the scale of dark sector interactions. The $X$ boson can be an axion or a dark photon. We show that the concurrent determination of the anti-muon and positron polarizations makes possible to distinguish with a confidence level of 99% between the two dark sector portals with as few as 6 observed events in the case of the massless dark photon. Instead, the massive spin-1, dimension 4 dark portal cannot be distinguished from the axion-like case. We also discuss the possibility that the $…
These pages, based on my talk at the Montpellier 14th International Conference in QCD, provide us with a short update of the Standard Model contributions to the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment.
The MUonE experiment aims at an independent and very precise determination of the leading hadronic contribution to the muon magnetic moment, based on an alternative method, complementary to the existing ones. This can be achieved by measuring with unprecedented precision the shape of the differential cross section of $μe$ elastic scattering, using the intense muon beam available at CERN, with energy of 150 GeV, off atomic electrons of a light target. The status of the project is presented, with recent results in preparation for the test run scheduled in 2021 with a reduced detector.
Rare B decays allow to investigate fundamental interactions regarding their flavor, chiral, Dirac and CP properties. In anticipation of the large data samples of exclusive B decays into muons from the forthcoming LHC experiments, in particular LHCb, as well as possible super flavor factories, we review the theoretical status and outline future opportunities to explore the borders of the Standard Model and beyond.
The cross section for lepton pair annihilation into a photon and a dark photon or an axion-like particle is constant for large center-of-mass energies because some of the portal operators coupling Standard Model and dark sector are proportional to the energy. Feebly coupled though they are, these portal operators will be enhanced by the large center-of-mass energy made available by a muon collider and thus provide the ideal example of possible physics beyond the Standard Model to be studied with such a machine. We discuss the characteristic signature of the presence of these operators: mono-ch…
We investigate the implications of the dark axion portal interaction, the axion-photon-dark photon vertex, for the future experiments SHiP and FASER. We also study the phenomenology of the combined vector portal (kinetic mixing of the photon and dark photon) and dark axion portal. The muon $g-2$ discrepancy is unfortunately not solved even with the two portals, but the low-energy beam dump experiments with monophoton detection capability can open new opportunities in light dark sector searches using the combined portals.
We discuss new physics phenomenology of hidden scalar ($S$), pseudoscalar ($P$), vector ($V$) and axial-vector ($A$) particles coupled to nucleons and leptons, which could give contributions to proton charge radius, $(g-2)_μ$, $^8$Be-$^4$He anomaly and electric dipole moment (EDM) of Standard Model (SM) particles. In particular, we estimate sensitivity of NA64$μ$ experiment to observe muon missing energy events involving hidden scalar and vector particles. That analysis is based on {\tt GEANT4} Monte Carlo simulation of the signal process of muon scattering off target nuclei $μN \to μN S(V)$ f…
We present the status of the MUonE experimental proposal which aims at determining the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon g-2 by measuring the hadronic part of the photon vacuum polarization in the spacelike region. The challenges posed by this measurement on the detector, the proposed solution, and the status of this proposal will be discussed.
We revisit the status of a Majorana fermion as a dark matter candidate when a sequential Z' gauge boson dictates the dark matter phenomenology. Direct dark matter detection signatures rise from dark matter-nucleus scatterings at bubble chamber and liquid xenon detectors, and from the flux of neutrinos from the Sun measured by the IceCube experiment, which is governed by the spin-dependent dark matter-nucleus scattering. On the collider side, LHC searches for dilepton and mono-jet + missing energy signals play an important role. The relic density and perturbativity requirements are also address…
During the 1990s an international collaboration has been studying the possibility of constructing and operating a high-energy high-luminosity $μ^+μ^-$ collider. Such a machine could be the approach of choice to extend our discovery reach beyond that of the LHC. More recently, a growing collaboration is exploring the potential of a stored-muon-beam "neutrino factory" to elucidate neutrino oscillations. A neutrino factory could be an attractive stepping-stone to a muon collider. Its construction, possibly feasible within the coming decade, could have substantial impact on neutrino physics.
A light leptophilic boson (scalar or pseudoscalar) has been postulated to explain the muon g-2 anomaly and could be a portal to dark matter. Realizing the leptophilic nature of a singlet boson in the framework of the two-Higgs-doublet-Model of type-X, we identify the parameter space viable for the explanation of the updated muon g-2 discrepancy. It is then shown that such a hypothetical particle will be unambiguously ruled out or discovered via the Yukawa process at a lepton collider designed as a Higgs factory.
We give an update on the status of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon g-2. We review recent work by various groups, list some of the open problems and give an outlook on how to better control the uncertainty of this contribution. This is necessary in order to fully profit from planned future muon g-2 experiments to test the Standard Model. Despite some recent developments, we think that the estimate a_{mu}^{HLbL} = (116 \pm 40) x 10^{-11} still gives a fair description of the current situation.
We review the present status of the theoretical evaluation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the the muon within the Standard Model. We mainly focus on the hadronic contributions in the muon g-2 due to vacuum polarization effects, light-by-light scattering and higher order electroweak corrections. We discuss some recent calculations together with their uncertainties and limitations and point out possible improvements in the future. In view of the inconsistent values for the hadronic vacuum polarization based on e^+ e^- and tau data, no conclusion can be drawn yet, whether the apparent discre…
We study a model of dark matter in which the hidden sector interacts with standard model particles via a hidden photonic portal. We investigate the effects of this new interaction on the hydrogen atom, including the Stark, Zeeman and hyperfine effects. Using the accuracy of the measurement of energy, we obtain an upper bound for the coupling constant of the model. We also calculate the contribution from the hidden photonic portal to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, which provides an important probe of physics beyond the standard model.
The interest, the status and the perspectives of various experiments in neutron and nuclear beta-decay, muon-decay and pion-decays are discussed. The talk is segmented into a discussion of the decay-rates and of the energy-spectra and correlations. The impact on various scenarios of "new physics" is briefly mentioned; left-right symmetric models are discussed in more detail and the informations gained from the considered experiments is compared to those from other sources.
The theoretical status of the muon anomaly is reviewed including the recent change in the light by light hadronic correction. Specific attention is given to the implications of the shift in the difference between the BNL experimental result and the standard model prediction for sparticle mass limits. The implication of the BNL data for Yukawa unification is discussed and the role of gaugino mass nonuniversalities in the satisfaction of Yukawa unification is explored. An analysis of the BNL constraint for the satisfaction of the relic density constraint and for the search for dark matter is als…
We revisit dark matter annihilation as an explanation of the positron excess reported recently by the AMS-02 satellite-borne experiment. To this end, we propose a particle dark matter model by considering a Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) extended with an additional singlet boson and a singlet fermion. The additional (light) boson mixes with the pseudoscalar inherent in the 2HDM, and the singlet fermion, which is the dark matter candidate, annihilates via this bosonic portal. The dark matter candidate is made leptophilic by choosing the lepton-specific 2HDM and a suitable high value of $\tanβ$.…
The longstanding discrepancy between the measured and the predicted values of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_μ= (g-2)/2$, is one of the most intriguing potential hints of new physics in particle physics. After a brief introduction, the status of the theoretical prediction of g-2 is presented, with some focus on the contributions yielding the dominant uncertainties. The status of the comparison with the experimental measurement is then discussed.
In this paper, we study the extended Standard Model (SM) with an extra Higgs doublet and right-handed neutrinos. If the symmetry to distinguish the two Higgs doublets is not assigned, flavor changing neutral currents (FCNCs) involving the scalars are predicted even at the tree level. We investigate the constraints on the FCNCs at the one-loop level, and especially study the semileptonic $B$ meson decays, e.g. $B \to D^{(*)} τν$ and $B \to K^{(*)} ll$ processes, where the SM predictions are more than $2 σ$ away from the experimental results. We also consider the flavor-violating couplings invol…
We give a status report on the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment from the Dyson-Schwinger approach. We discuss novel, model-independent properties of the light-by-light amplitude: we give its covariant decomposition in view of electromagnetic gauge invariance and Bose symmetry, and we identify the relevant kinematic regions that are probed under the integral. The decomposition of the amplitude at the quark level and the importance of its various diagrams are discussed and related to model approaches.
We study for the first time the collider reach on the derivative Higgs portal, the leading effective interaction that couples a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB) scalar Dark Matter to the Standard Model. We focus on Dark Matter pair production through an off-shell Higgs boson, which is analyzed in the vector boson fusion channel. A variety of future high-energy lepton colliders as well as hadron colliders are considered, including CLIC, a muon collider, the High-Luminosity and High-Energy versions of the LHC, and FCC-hh. Implications on the parameter space of pNGB Dark Matter are discussed. …
The Standard Model (SM) without the Higgs mass term is scale invariant. Gildener and Weinberg generalized the scale invariant standard model (SISM) by including the multiplication of scalars in quartic forms. They pointed out that along the flat direction only one scalar -- called the scalon -- is classically massless and all other scalars are massive. Here we choose a SISM with one scalon and one heavy scalar and extend that further respecting the scale invariance by a vector-like lepton (VLL). By an appropriate choice of the flat direction, the heavy scalar enjoys the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry…
With the recent interest in the measured and standard model values of the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a_mu, some confusion has arisen concerning our knowledge of the hadronic contribution to a_mu. In the dispersion integral approach to hadronic vacuum polarization effects, low energy contributions must be evaluated from data or in a model-dependent approach tested by data. At higher energies perturbative QCD has been used, sometimes in conjunction with data. The history of such evaluations is reviewed, and the prospects for further improvement are discussed. We conclude that not all publis…
We explore the possibility that the discrepancy in the observed anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $Δa _μ$ and the predicted relic abundance of Dark Matter by Planck data, can be explained in a lepto-philic 2-HDM augmented by a real SM singlet scalar of mass $\sim$ 10-80 GeV. We constrain the model from the observed Higgs Decay width at LHC, LEP searches for low mass exotic scalars and anomalous magnetic moment of an electron $Δa_e$. This constrained light singlet scalar serves as a portal for the fermionic Dark Matter, which contributes to the required relic density of the universe. A larg…
