We prove an explicit, non-local hydrodynamic closure for the linear one-dimensional kinetic equation independent on the size of the relaxation time. We compare this dynamical equation to the local approximations obtained from the Chapman--Enskog expansion for small relaxation times. Our results rely on the spectral theory of Jacobi operators with rank-one perturbations.
The self-organized hydrodynamic models can be derived from the kinetic version of the Vicsek model. The formal derivations and local well-posedness of the macroscopic equations are done by Degond and his collaborators. In this paper, we rigorously justify this hydrodynamic limit.
We derive generalised multi-flow hydrodynamic reductions of the nonlocal kinetic equation for a soliton gas and investigate their structure. These reductions not only provide further insight into the properties of the new kinetic equation but also could prove to be representatives of a novel class of integrable systems of hydrodynamic type, beyond the conventional semi-Hamiltonian framework.
Characteristic examples of continuous symmetries in hydrodynamic plasma theory (partial differential equations) and in kinetic Vlasov-Maxwell models (integro-differential equations) are considered. Possible symmetry extensions conditional and extended symmetries are discussed. Physical reasons for these symmetry extensions are clarified.
In this paper we study the hydrodynamic limit of a B.G.K. like kinetic model on domains with boundaries via $BV_{loc}$ theory. We obtain as a consequence existence results for scalar multidimensional conservation laws with kinetic boundary conditions. We require that the initial and boundary data satisfy the optimal assumptions that they all belong to $L^1\cap L^\infty$ with the additional regularity assumptions that the initial data are in $BV_{loc}$. We also extend our hydrodynamic analysis to the case of a generalized kinetic model to account for forces effects and we obtain as a consequenc…
Given an obstacle in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and a non-zero velocity with small amplitude at the infinity, we construct the unique steady Boltzmann solution flowing around such an obstacle with the prescribed velocity as $|x|\to \infty$, which approaches the corresponding Navier-Stokes steady flow, as the mean-free path goes to zero. Furthermore, we establish the error estimate between the Boltzmann solution and its Navier-Stokes approximation. Our method consists of new $L^6$ and $L^3$ estimates in the unbounded exterior domain, as well as an iterative scheme preserving the positivity of the distribut…
We study a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process where jumps happen at rate one, except at the origin where the rate is lower. We prove a hydrodynamic scaling limit to a macroscopic profile described by a variational formula. The limit is valid for all values of the slow rate. The only assumption required is that a law of large numbers holds for the initial particle distribution. This includes also deterministic initial configurations. The hydrodynamic description contains as an unknown parameter the macroscopic rate at the origin, which is strictly larger than the microscopic slow rate.…
This paper deals with the derivation and analysis of the the Hall Magneto-Hydrodynamic equations. We first provide a derivation of this system from a two-fluids Euler-Maxwell system for electrons and ions, through a set of scaling limits. We also propose a kinetic formulation for the Hall-MHD equations which contains as fluid closure different variants of the Hall-MHD model. Then, we prove the existence of global weak solutions for the incompressible viscous resistive Hall-MHD model. We use the particular structure of the Hall term which has zero contribution to the energy identity. Finally, w…
We study the evolution of a two component fluid consisting of ``blue'' and ``red'' particles which interact via strong short range (hard core) and weak long range pair potentials. At low temperatures the equilibrium state of the system is one in which there are two coexisting phases. Under suitable choices of space-time scalings and system parameters we first obtain (formally) a mesoscopic kinetic Vlasov-Boltzmann equation for the one particle position and velocity distribution functions, appropriate for a description of the phase segregation kinetics in this system. Further scalings then yiel…
The purpose of this article is to provide a simple proof of the hydrodynamic and hydrostatic behavior of the SSEP in contact with slowed reservoirs which inject and remove particles in a finite size windows at the extremities of the bulk. More precisely, the reservoirs inject/remove particles at/from any point of a window of size K placed at each extremity of the bulk and particles are injected/removed to the first open/occupied position in that window. The hydrodynamic limit is given by the heat equation with non-linear Robin boundary conditions or Neumann boundary conditions, the latter bein…
The problem of the derivation of hydrodynamics from the Boltzmann equation and related dissipative systems is formulated as the problem of slow invariant manifold in the space of distributions. We review a few instances where such hydrodynamic manifolds were found analytically both as the result of summation of the Chapman--Enskog asymptotic expansion and by the direct solution of the invariance equation. These model cases, comprising Grad's moment systems, both linear and nonlinear, are studied in depth in order to gain understanding of what can be expected for the Boltzmann equation. Particu…
We analyse the hydrodynamical behavior of the long jumps symmetric exclusion process in the presence of a slow barrier. The jump rates are given by a symmetric transition probability $p(\cdot)$ with infinite variance. When jumps occur from $\mathbb{Z}_{-}^{*}$ to $\mathbb N$ the rates are slowed down by a factor $αn^{-β}$ (with $α>0$ and $β\geq 0$). We obtain several partial differential equations given in terms of the regional fractional Laplacian on $\mathbb R^*$ and with different boundary conditions. Surprisingly, in opposition to the diffusive regime, we get different regimes depending on…
Macroscopic dynamics of soliton gases can be analytically described by the thermodynamic limit of the Whitham equations, yielding an integro-differential kinetic equation for the density of states. Under a delta-functional ansatz, the kinetic equation for soliton gas reduces to a non-diagonalisable system of hydrodynamic type whose matrix consists of several 2x2 Jordan blocks. Here we demonstrate the integrability of this system by showing that it possesses a hierarchy of commuting hydrodynamic flows and can be solved by an extension of the generalised hodograph method. Our approach is a gener…
In this article we analyse the hydrodynamical behavior of the symmetric exclusion process with long jumps and in the presence of a slow barrier. The jump rates for fast bonds are given by a transition probability $p(\cdot)$ which is symmetric and has finite variance, while for slow bonds the jump rates are given $p(\cdot)αn^{-β}$ (with $α>0$ and $β\geq 0$), and correspond to jumps from $\mathbb{Z}_{-}^{*}$ to $\mathbb N$. We prove that: if there is a fast bond from $\mathbb{Z}_{-}^{*}$ and $\mathbb N$, then the hydrodynamic limit is given by the heat equation with no boundary conditions; other…
We consider the exclusion process in the one-dimensional discrete torus with $N$ points, where all the bonds have conductance one, except a finite number of slow bonds, with conductance $N^{-β}$, with $β\in[0,\infty)$. We prove that the time evolution of the empirical density of particles, in the diffusive scaling, has a distinct behavior according to the range of the parameter $β$. If $β\in [0,1)$, the hydrodynamic limit is given by the usual heat equation. If $β=1$, it is given by a parabolic equation involving an operator $\frac{d}{dx}\frac{d}{dW}$, where $W$ is the Lebesgue measure on the …
