Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising technology which meets the demands of massive connectivity in future wireless networks. Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a popular code-domain NOMA technique. The effectiveness of SCMA comes from: (1) the multi-dimensional sparse codebooks offering high shaping gain and (2) sophisticated multi-user detection based on message passing algorithm (MPA). The codebooks of the users play the main role in determining the performance of SCMA system. This paper presents a framework to design the codebooks by taking into account the entire system including the SCMA encoder and the MPA-based detector. The symbol-error rate (SER) is considered as the design criterion which needs to be minimized. Differential evolution (DE) is used to carry out the minimization of the SER over the codebooks. The simulation results are presented for various channel models.
Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising code-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme for the enabling of massive machine-type communication. In SCMA, the design of good sparse codebooks and efficient multiuser decoding have attracted tremendous research attention in the past few years. This paper aims to leverage deep learning to jointly design the downlink SCMA encoder and decoder with the aid of autoencoder. We introduce a novel end-to-end learning based SCMA (E2E-SCMA) design framework, under which improved sparse codebooks and low-complexity decoder are obtained. Comp…
Sparse Code Multiple Access (SCMA) has been recently proposed for the future generation of wireless communication standards. SCMA system design involves specifying several parameters. In order to simplify the procedure, most works consider a multistage design approach. Two main stages are usually emphasized in these methods: sparse signatures design (equivalently, resource allocation) and codebook design. In this paper, we present a novel SCMA codebook design method. The proposed method considers SCMA codebooks structured with an underlying vector space obtained from classical block codes. In …
Sparse code multiple access (SCMA), as a codebook-based non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique, has received research attention in recent years. The codebook design problem for SCMA has also been studied to some extent since codebook choices are highly related to the system's error rate performance. In this paper, we approach the SCMA codebook design problem by formulating an optimization problem to maximize the minimum Euclidean distance (MED) of superimposed codewords under power constraints. While SCMA codebooks with a larger MED are expected to obtain a better BER performance, no …
This paper conceives a novel sparse code multiple access (SCMA) codebook design which is motivated by the strong need for providing ultra-low decoding complexity and good error performance in downlink Internet-of-things (IoT) networks, in which a massive number of low-end and low-cost IoT communication devices are served. By focusing on the typical Rician fading channels, we analyze the pair-wise probability of superimposed SCMA codewords and then deduce the design metrics for multi-dimensional constellation construction and sparse codebook optimization. For significant reduction of the decodi…
Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising multiuser communication technique for the enabling of future massive machine-type networks. Unlike existing codebook design schemes assuming uniform power allocation, we present a novel class of SCMA codebooks which display power imbalance among different users for downlink transmission. Based on the Star-QAM mother constellation structure and with the aid of genetic algorithm, we optimize the minimum Euclidean distance (MED) and the minimum product distance (MPD) of the proposed codebooks. Numerical simulation results show that our proposed co…
Multicarrier CDMA is a multiple access scheme in which modulated QAM symbols are spread over OFDMA tones by using a generally complex spreading sequence. Effectively, a QAM symbol is repeated over multiple tones. Low density signature (LDS) is a version of CDMA with low density spreading sequences allowing us to take advantage of a near optimal message passing algorithm (MPA) receiver with practically feasible complexity. Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a multi-dimensional codebook-based non-orthogonal spreading technique. In SCMA, the procedure of bit to QAM symbol mapping and spreading…
Sparse Code Multiple Access (SCMA) is an enabling code-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)scheme for massive connectivity and ultra low-latency in future machine-type communication networks. As an evolved variant of code division multiple access (CDMA), multiple users in SCMA are separated by assigning distinctive codebooks which display certain sparsity. At an SCMA receiver, efficient multiuser detection is carried out by employing the message passing algorithm (MPA) which exploits the sparsity of codebooks to achieve error rate performance approaching to that of the maximum likeliho…
Grant-free sparse code multiple access (GF-SCMA) is considered to be a promising multiple access candidate for future wireless networks. In this paper, we focus on characterizing the performance of uplink GF-SCMA schemes in a network with ubiquitous connections, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) networks. To provide a tractable approach to evaluate the performance of GF-SCMA, we first develop a theoretical model taking into account the property of multi-user detection (MUD) in the SCMA system. We then analyze the error rate performance of GF-SCMA in the case of codebook collision to investi…
Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a new multiple access technique which supports massive connectivity. Compared with the current Long Term Evolution (LTE) system, it enables the overloading of active users on limited orthogonal resources and thus meets the requirement of the fifth generation (5G) wireless networks. However, the computation complexity of existing detection algorithms increases exponentially with $d_f$ (the degree of the resource nodes). Although the codebooks are designed to have low density, the detection still takes considerable time. The parameter $d_f$ must be designed …
Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is an emerging paradigm for efficient enabling of massive connectivity in future machine-type communications (MTC). In this letter, we conceive the uplink transmissions of the low-density parity check (LDPC) coded SCMA system. Traditional receiver design of LDPC-SCMA system, which is based on message passing algorithm (MPA) for multiuser detection followed by individual LDPC decoding, may suffer from the drawback of the high complexity and large decoding latency, especially when the system has large codebook size and/or high overloading factor. To address thi…

Fortunately, the recent spotlighted deep learning technologies are of significant potentials in solving many communication engineering problems. Inspired by this, we explore approaches to improve SCMA performances with th…
This paper is focused on code-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (CD-NOMA), which is an emerging paradigm to support massive connectivity for future machine-type wireless networks. We take a comparative approach to study two types of overloaded CD-NOMA, i.e., sparse code multiple access (SCMA) and dense code multiple access (DCMA), which are distinctive from each other in terms of their codebooks having sparsity or not. By analysing their individual diversity orders (DO) in Rayleigh fading channels, it is found that DCMA can be designed to enjoy full DO which is equal to the maximum number …
In this paper, a new approach for multiple access (MA) in fifth generation (5G) of cellular networks called power domain sparse code multiple access (PSMA) is proposed. In PSMA, we adopt both the power domain and the code domain to transmit multiple users' signals over a subcarrier simultaneously. In such a model, the same SCMA codebook can be used by multiple users where, for these users, power domain non-orthogonal multiple access (PD-NOMA) technique is used to send signals non-orthogonally. Although different SCMA codebooks are orthogonal and produce no interference over each other, the sam…
Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) scheme is considered to be one promising non-orthogonal multiple access technology for the future fifth generation (5G) communications. Due to the sparse nature, message passing algorithm (MPA) has been used as the receiver to achieve close to maximum likelihood (ML) detection performance with much lower complexity. However, the complexity order of MPA is still exponential with the size of codebook and the degree of signal superposition on a given resource element. In this paper, we propose a novel low complexity iterative receiver based on expectation propag…

Grant-free random access and uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) have been introduced to reduce transmission latency and signaling overhead in massive machine-type communication (mMTC). In this paper, we propose two novel group-based deep neural network active user detection (AUD) schemes for the grant-free sparse code multiple access (SCMA) system in mMTC uplink framework. The proposed AUD schemes learn the nonlinear mapping, i.e., multi-dimensional codebook structure and the channel characteristic. This is accomplished through the received signal which incorporates the sparse struct…
The recent works on a deep learning (DL)-based joint design of preamble set for the transmitters and data-aided active user detection (AUD) in the receiver has demonstrated a significant performance improvement for grant-free sparse code multiple access (GF-SCMA) system. The autoencoder for the joint design can be trained only in a given environment, but in an actual situation where the operating environment is constantly changing, it is difficult to optimize the preamble set for every possible environment. Therefore, a conventional, yet general approach may implement the data-aided AUD while …
This paper addresses the four enabling technologies, namely multi-user sparse code multiple access (SCMA), content caching, energy harvesting, and physical layer security for proposing an energy and spectral efficient resource allocation algorithm for the access and backhaul links in heterogeneous cellular networks. Although each of the above mentioned issues could be a topic of research, in a real situation, we would face a complicated scenario where they should be considered jointly, and hence, our target is to consider these technologies jointly in a unified framework. Moreover, we propose …

We develop two new designs of unitary differential space-time modulation (DSTM) with low decoding complexity. Their decoder can be separated into a few parallel decoders, each of which has a decoding search space of less than sqrt(N) if the DSTM codebook contains N codewords. Both designs are based on the concept of joint modulation, which means that several information symbols are jointly modulated, unlike the conventional symbol-by-symbol modulation. The first design is based on Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code (O-STBC) with joint constellation constructed from spherical codes. The second de…
This paper addresses a unified approach towards communication in decentralized wireless networks of separate transmitter-receiver pairs. In general, users are unaware of each other's codebooks and there is no central controller to assign the resources in the network to the users. A randomized signaling scheme is introduced in which each user locally spreads its Gaussian signal along a randomly generated spreading code comprised of a sequence of nonzero elements over a certain alphabet. Along with spreading, each transmitter also masks its output independently from transmission to transmission.…
