Control Barrier Functions (CBFs) aim to ensure safety by constraining the control input at each time step so that the system state remains within a desired safe region. This paper presents a framework for CBFs in stochastic systems in the presence of Gaussian process and measurement noise. We first consider the case where the system state is known at each time step, and present reciprocal and zero CBF constructions that guarantee safety with probability 1. We extend our results to high relative degree systems with linear dynamics and affine safety constraints. We then develop CBFs for incomplete state information environments, in which the state must be estimated using sensors that are corrupted by Gaussian noise. We prove that our proposed CBF ensures safety with probability 1 when the state estimate is within a given bound of the true state, which can be achieved using an Extended Kalman Filter when the system is linear or the process and measurement noise are sufficiently small. We propose control policies that combine these CBFs with Control Lyapunov Functions in order to jointly ensure safety and stochastic stability. Our results are validated via numerical study on a multi-agent collision avoidance example.
This note examines the safety verification of the solution of Ito stochastic differential equations using the notion of stochastic zeroing barrier function. The main tools in the proposed method include Ito calculus and the concept of stochastic invariant set.
This work introduces the StoMADS-PB algorithm for constrained stochastic blackbox optimization, which is an extension of the mesh adaptive direct-search (MADS) method originally developed for deterministic blackbox optimization under general constraints. The values of the objective and constraint functions are provided by a noisy blackbox, i.e., they can only be computed with random noise whose distribution is unknown. As in MADS, constraint violations are aggregated into a single constraint violation function. Since all functions values are numerically unavailable, StoMADS-PB uses estimates a…
We introduce High-Relative Degree Stochastic Control Lyapunov functions and Barrier Functions as a means to ensure asymptotic stability of the system and incorporate state dependent high relative degree safety constraints on a non-linear stochastic systems. Our proposed formulation also provides a generalisation to the existing literature on control Lyapunov and barrier functions for stochastic systems. The control policies are evaluated using a constrained quadratic program that is based on control Lyapunov and barrier functions. Our proposed control design is validated via simulated experime…
In this paper, we propose a novel approach to synthesize linear feedback controllers for navigating in polygonal environments using noisy measurements and a convex cell decomposition. Our method is based on formulating chance constraints for the convergence and collision avoidance condition. In particular, the stability and safety guarantees come from chance Control Barrier Function (CBF) constraints and chance Control Lyapunov Function (CLF) constraints, respectively. We use convex over-approximations to get upper bounds of the constraints, leading to a convex robust quadratic program for fin…
In this paper, two classes of continuous higher order adaptive sliding mode controllers based on barrier functions are developed for a perturbed chain of integrators with unbounded perturbations. Both classes provide finite-time convergence of system states to a predefined domain using a continuous control signal. The first class of adaptive controllers does not require any assumptions about the perturbation; however, it can provide unbounded control gains. To ensure bounded control gains, and in the case of a Lipschitz perturbation, a second class of adaptive controllers, called the adaptive …
Accurate quantification of safety is essential for the design of autonomous systems. In this paper, we present a methodology to characterize the exact probabilities associated with invariance and recovery in safe control. We consider a stochastic control system where control barrier functions, gradient-based methods, and barrier certificates are used to constrain control actions and validate safety. We derive the probability distributions of the minimum and maximum barrier function values during any time interval and the first entry and exit times to and from any super level sets of the barrie…
This paper focuses on synthesizing control policies for discrete-time stochastic control systems together with a lower bound on the probability that the systems satisfy the complex temporal properties. The desired properties of the system are expressed as linear temporal logic (LTL) specifications over finite traces. In particular, our approach decomposes the given specification into simpler reachability tasks based on its automata representation. We then propose the use of so-called \emph{control barrier certificate} to solve those simpler reachability tasks along with computing the correspon…
This paper introduces integral control barrier functions (I-CBFs) as a means to enable the safety-critical integral control of nonlinear systems. Importantly, I-CBFs allow for the holistic encoding of both state constraints and input bounds in a single framework. We demonstrate this by applying them to a dynamically defined tracking controller, thereby enforcing safety in state and input through a minimally invasive I-CBF controller framed as a quadratic program.
For a broad class of nonlinear systems, we formulate the problem of guaranteeing safety with optimality under constraints. Specifically, we define controlled safety for differential inclusions with constraints on the states and the inputs. Through the use of nonsmooth analysis tools, we show that a continuous optimal control law can be selected from a set-valued constraint capturing the system constraints and conditions guaranteeing safety using control barrier functions. Our results guarantee optimality and safety via a continuous state-feedback law designed using nonsmooth control barrier fu…
This contribution introduces a centralized input constrained optimal control framework based on multiple control barrier functions (CBFs) to coordinate connected and automated agents at intersections. For collision avoidance, we propose a novel CBF which is safe by construction. The given control scheme provides provable guarantees that collision avoidance CBFs and CBFs to constrain the agents' velocity are jointly feasible (referred to as control-sharing property) subject to input constraints. A simulation study finally provides evidence that the proposed control scheme is safe.
This paper presents a distributed multi-layer ring barrier coverage algorithm. In order to achieve single-layer ring barrier coverage, a distributed single-layer ring barrier coverage algorithm that maximises the probability of monitoring is proposed. Considering the security risks of single-layer barrier coverage, a distributed adjustment mechanism between multiple layers of barriers is designed and combined with the single-layer ring barrier coverage algorithm to propose a distributed multi-layer ring barrier coverage algorithm. Furthermore, we present a theoretical analysis of the proposed …
In this paper, we provide a compositional framework for synthesizing hybrid controllers for interconnected discrete-time control systems enforcing specifications expressed by co-Buchi automata. In particular, we first decompose the given specification to simpler reachability tasks based on automata representing the complements of original co-Buchi automata. Then, we provide a systematic approach to solve those simpler reachability tasks by computing corresponding control barrier functions. We show that such control barrier functions can be constructed compositionally by assuming some small-gai…
This paper introduces the notion of an Input Constrained Control Barrier Function (ICCBF), as a method to synthesize safety-critical controllers for non-linear control affine systems with input constraints. The method identifies a subset of the safe set of states, and constructs a controller to render the subset forward invariant. The feedback controller is represented as the solution to a quadratic program, which can be solved efficiently for real-time implementation. Furthermore, we show that ICCBFs are a generalization of Higher Order Control Barrier Functions, and thus are applicable to sy…

The need for robust control laws is especially important in safety-critical applications. We propose robust hybrid control barrier functions as a means to synthesize control laws that ensure robust safety. Based on this notion, we formulate an optimization problem for learning robust hybrid control barrier functions from data. We identify sufficient conditions on the data such that feasibility of the optimization problem ensures correctness of the learned robust hybrid control barrier functions. Our techniques allow us to safely expand the region of attraction of a compass gait walker that is …
