We prove the global asymptotic stability of the Minkowski space for the massless Einstein-Vlasov system in wave coordinates. In contrast with previous work on the subject, no compact support assumptions on the initial data of the Vlasov field in space or the momentum variables are required. In fact, the initial decay in $v$ is optimal. The present proof is based on vector field and weighted vector field techniques for Vlasov fields, as developed in previous work of Fajman, Joudioux, and Smulevici, and heavily relies on several structural properties of the massless Vlasov equation, similar to the null and weak null conditions. To deal with the weak decay rate of the metric, we propagate well-chosen hierarchized weighted energy norms which reflect the strong decay properties satisfied by the particle density far from the light cone. A particular analytical difficulty arises at top order, when we do not have access to improved pointwise decay estimates for certain metric components. This difficulty is resolved using a novel hierarchy in the massless Einstein-Vlasov system, which exploits the propagation of different growth rates for the energy norms of different metric components.
We use optimal transportation techniques to show uniqueness of the compactly supported weak solutions of the relativistic Vlasov-Darwin system. Our proof extends the method used by Loeper in J. Math. Pures Appl. 86, 68-79 (2006) to obtain uniqueness results for the Vlasov-Poisson system.
We prove global stability of the Minkowski spacetime in the wave coordinates system for the massive Einstein-Vlasov system. In particular, compared with previous results by Lindblad-Taylor, in which the Vlasov part is assumed to have compact support assumption, and Fajman-Joudioux-Smulevci, in which the spacetime is assumed to be exact Schwarzschild in the exterior region, we do not impose any compact support condition for the Vlasov part and allow a large class of non-isotropic perturbations for the metric part, which decay at rate $\langle r\rangle^{-1+}$ towards space infinity.
Minkowski space is shown to be globally stable as a solution to the massive Einstein--Vlasov system. The proof is based on a harmonic gauge in which the equations reduce to a system of quasilinear wave equations for the metric, satisfying the weak null condition, coupled to a transport equation for the Vlasov particle distribution function. Central to the proof is a collection of vector fields used to control the particle distribution function, a function of both spacetime and momentum variables. The vector fields are derived using a general procedure, are adapted to the geometry of the soluti…
In this paper, we study the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system in a 2D pipe with partially absorbing boundary conditions. We show the existence of stationary states for this system near small Poiseuille flows for the fluid phase, for which the kinetic phase is not trivial. We prove the asymptotic stability of these states with respect to appropriately compactly supported perturbations. The analysis relies on geometric control conditions which help to avoid any concentration phenomenon for the kinetic phase.
Minkowski space is shown to be globally stable as a solution to the Einstein--Vlasov system in the case when all particles have zero mass. The proof proceeds by showing that the matter must be supported in the "wave zone", and then proving a small data semi-global existence result for the characteristic initial value problem for the massless Einstein--Vlasov system in this region. This relies on weighted estimates for the solution which, for the Vlasov part, are obtained by introducing the Sasaki metric on the mass shell and estimating Jacobi fields with respect to this metric by geometric qua…
We consider the two-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system to model a two-component plasma whose distribution function is constant with respect to the third space dimension. First, we show how this two-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system can be derived from the full three-dimensional system. The existence of compactly supported steady states with vanishing electric potential in a three-dimensional setting has already been investigated by A. L. Skubachevskii [15]. We show that his approach can easily be adapted to the two-dimensional system. However, our main result is to prove the existence of compac…
We prove the global stability of the Minkowski space viewed as the trivial solution of the Einstein-Vlasov system. To estimate the Vlasov field, we use the vector field and modified vector field techniques developed in [FJS15; FJS17]. In particular, the initial support in the velocity variable does not need to be compact. To control the effect of the large velocities, we identify and exploit several structural properties of the Vlasov equation to prove that the worst non-linear terms in the Vlasov equation either enjoy a form of the null condition or can be controlled using the wave coordinate…
We consider the Vlasov-Poisson equation in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with initial data which are not $L^1$ in space and have unbounded support in the velocities. Assuming for the density a slight decay in space and a strong decay in velocities, we prove existence and uniqueness of the solution, thus generalizing the analogous result given in [5] for data compactly supported in the velocities.
We study the nonlinear stability of a large class of inhomogeneous steady state solutions to the Hamiltonian Mean Field (HMF) model. Under a simple criterion, we prove the nonlinear stability of steady states which are decreasing functions of the microscopic energy. To achieve this task, we extend to this context the strategy based on generalized rearrangement techniques which was developed recently for the gravitational Vlasov-Poisson equation. Explicit stability inequalities are established and our analysis is able to treat non compactly supported steady states to HMF, which are physically r…
We strengthen, in two different ways, the so called Borell-Brascamp- Lieb inequality in the class of power concave functions with compact support. As examples of applications we obtain two quantitative versions of the Brunn- Minkowski inequality and of the Urysohn inequality for torsional rigidity.
Future stability of expanding spatially homogeneous FLRW solutions of the spherically symmetric Einstein--massless Vlasov system with spatial topology $\mathbb{R}^3$
We study the late-time behavior of spherically symmetric solutions of the Yang-Mills equations on Minkowski and Schwarzschild backgrounds. Using nonlinear perturbation theory we show in both cases that solutions having smooth compactly supported initial data posses tails which decay as $t^{-4}$ at timelike infinity. Moreover, for small initial data on Minkowski background we derive the third-order formula for the amplitude of the tail and confirm numerically its accuracy.
Recently, M.K.-H. Kiessling and A.S. Tahvildar-Zadeh proved that a unique global classical solution to the relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system exists whenever the positive, integrable initial datum is spherically symmetric, compactly supported in momentum space, vanishes on characteristics with vanishing angular momentum, and for $β\ge 3/2$ has $\mathfrak{L}^β$-norm strictly below a positive, critical value $\mathcal{C}_β$. Everything else being equal, data leading to finite time blow-up can be found with $\mathfrak{L}^β$-norm surpassing $\mathcal{C}_β$ for any $β>1$, with $\mathcal{C}_β>0$ if …
This article is devoted to the kinetic description in phase space of magnetically confined plasmas. It addresses the problem of stability near equilibria of the Relativistic Vlasov Maxwell system. We work under the Glassey-Strauss compactly supported momentum assumption on the density function $f(t,\cdot)$. Magnetically confined plasmas are characterized by the presence of a strong external magnetic field $ x \mapsto ε^{-1} \mathbf{B}_e(x)$, where $ε$ is a small parameter related to the inverse gyrofrequency of electrons. In comparison, the self consistent internal electromagnetic fields $(E,B…
We consider the classical and relativistic Vlasov-Poisson systems with spherically-symmetric initial data and prove the optimal decay rates for all suitable $L^p$ norms of the charge density and electric field, as well as, the optimal growth rates for the largest particle position and momentum on the support of the distribution function. Though a previous work \cite{Horst} established upper bounds on the decay of the supremum of the charge density and electric field, we provide a slightly different proof, attain optimal rates, and extend this result to include all other norms. Additionally, we…
Motivated by wave or Dirac equations on noncommutative deformations of Minkowski space, linear integro-differential equations of the form $(D+λW)f=0$ are studied, where $D$ is a normal or prenormal hyperbolic differential operator on ${\mathbb R}^n$, $λ\in\mathbb C$ is a coupling constant, and $W$ is a regular integral operator with compactly supported kernel. In particular, $W$ can be non-local in time, so that a Hamiltonian formulation is not possible. It is shown that for sufficiently small $|λ|$, the hyperbolic character of $D$ is essentially preserved. Unique advanced/retarded fundamental…
