In this paper, we propose and analyze iterative method based on projection techniques to solve a non-singular linear system Ax = b. In particular, for a given positive integer m, m-dimensional successive projection method (mD-SPM) for symmetric definite matrix A, is generalized for non-singular matrix A. Moreover, it is proved that mD-SPM gives better result for large values of m. Numerical experiments are carried out to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in comparison with other schemes in the scientific literature.
We obtain an iterative formula that converges incrementally to the smallest singular value. Similarly, we obtain an iterative formula that converges decreasingly to the largest singular value.
In this paper, we present a generic methodology for the efficient numerical approximation of the density function of the McKean-Vlasov SDEs. The weak error analysis for the projected process motivates us to combine the iterative Multilevel Monte Carlo method for McKean-Vlasov SDEs \cite{szpruch2019} with non-interacting kernels and projection estimation of particle densities \cite{belomestny2018projected}. By exploiting smoothness of the coefficients for McKean-Vlasov SDEs, in the best case scenario (i.e $C^{\infty}$ for the coefficients), we obtain the complexity of order $O(ε^{-2}|\logε|^4)$…
In this paper, two numerical schemes for a nonlinear integral equation of Fredholm type with weakly singular kernel are proposed. These numerical methods combine sinc-collocation and sinc-convolution approximations with Newton and steepest descent iterative methods that involve solving a nonlinear system of equations. The convergence rate of the approximation schemes is also analyzed. Numerical experiments have been performed to illustrate the sharpness of the theoretical estimates and the sensitivity of the solution with respect to some parameters in the equation. The comparison between the s…
This paper surveys an important class of methods that combine iterative projection methods and variational regularization methods for large-scale inverse problems. Iterative methods such as Krylov subspace methods are invaluable in the numerical linear algebra community and have proved important in solving inverse problems due to their inherent regularizing properties and their ability to handle large-scale problems. Variational regularization describes a broad and important class of methods that are used to obtain reliable solutions to inverse problems, whereby one solves a modified problem t…
In this paper, we propose a computationally efficient iterative algorithm for proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) using random sampling based techniques. In this algorithm, additional rows and columns are sampled and a merging technique is used to update the dominant POD modes in each iteration. We derive bounds for the spectral norm of the error introduced by a series of merging operations. We use an existing theorem to get an approximate measure of the quality of subspaces obtained on convergence of the iteration. Results on various datasets indicate that the POD modes and/or the subspaces…
When solving ill-posed inverse problems, a good choice of the prior is critical for the computation of a reasonable solution. A common approach is to include a Gaussian prior, which is defined by a mean vector and a symmetric and positive definite covariance matrix, and to use iterative projection methods to solve the corresponding regularized problem. However, a main challenge for many of these iterative methods is that the prior covariance matrix must be known and fixed (up to a constant) before starting the solution process. In this paper, we develop hybrid projection methods for inverse pr…
This paper considers the problem of updating the rank-k truncated Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of matrices subject to the addition of new rows and/or columns over time. Such matrix problems represent an important computational kernel in applications such as Latent Semantic Indexing and Recommender Systems. Nonetheless, the proposed framework is purely algebraic and targets general updating problems. The algorithm presented in this paper undertakes a projection view-point and focuses on building a pair of subspaces which approximate the linear span of the sought singular vectors of the up…
Projection-based iterative methods for solving large over-determined linear systems are well-known for their simplicity and computational efficiency. It is also known that the correct choice of a sketching procedure (i.e., preprocessing steps that reduce the dimension of each iteration) can improve the performance of iterative methods in multiple ways, such as, to speed up the convergence of the method by fighting inner correlations of the system, or to reduce the variance incurred by the presence of noise. In the current work, we show that sketching can also help us to get better theoretical …
We introduce a software package called HIFIR for preconditioning sparse, unsymmetric, ill-conditioned, and potentially singular systems. HIFIR computes a hybrid incomplete factorization, which combines multilevel incomplete LU factorization with a truncated, rank-revealing QR factorization on the final Schur complement. This novel hybridization is based on the new theory of approximate generalized inverse and $ε$-accuracy. It enables near-optimal preconditioners for consistent systems and enables flexible GMRES to solve inconsistent systems when coupled with iterative refinement. In this paper…
Metal artifact reduction (MAR) is a challenging problem in computed tomography (CT) imaging. A popular class of MAR methods replace sinogram measurements that are corrupted by metal with artificial data. While these ``projection completion'' approaches are successful in eliminating severe artifacts, secondary artifacts may be introduced by the artificial data. In this paper, we propose an approach which uses projection completion to generate a prior image, which is then incorporated into an iterative reconstruction algorithm based on the superiorization framework. The prior image is reconstruc…
We study a fixed point iterative method based on generalized relaxation of strictly quasi-nonexpansive operators. The iterative method is assembled by averaging of strings, and each string is composed of finitely many strictly quasi-nonexpansive operators. To evaluate the study, we examine a wide class of iterative methods for solving linear systems of equations (inequalities) and the subgradient projection method for solving nonlinear convex feasibility problems. The mathematical analysis is complemented by some experiments in image reconstruction from projections and classical examples, whic…
This paper studies the Schatten-$q$ error of low-rank matrix estimation by singular value decomposition under perturbation. We specifically establish a perturbation bound on the low-rank matrix estimation via a perturbation projection error bound. Then, we establish lower bounds to justify the tightness of the upper bound on the low-rank matrix estimation error. We further develop a user-friendly sin$Θ$ bound for singular subspace perturbation based on the matrix perturbation projection error bound. Finally, we demonstrate the advantage of our results over the ones in the literature by simulat…
