In this paper, we propose a computationally efficient iterative algorithm for proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) using random sampling based techniques. In this algorithm, additional rows and columns are sampled and a merging technique is used to update the dominant POD modes in each iteration. We derive bounds for the spectral norm of the error introduced by a series of merging operations. We use an existing theorem to get an approximate measure of the quality of subspaces obtained on convergence of the iteration. Results on various datasets indicate that the POD modes and/or the subspaces are approximated with excellent accuracy with a significant runtime improvement over computing the truncated SVD. We also propose a method to compute the POD modes of large matrices that do not fit in the RAM using this iterative sampling and merging algorithms.

We present two interactive visualisations of 2x2 real matrices, which we call v1 and v2. v1 is only valid for PSD matrices, and uses the spectral theorem in a trivial way -- we use it as a warm-up. By contrast, v2 is valid for *all* 2x2 real matrices, and is based on the lesser known theory of Lie Sphere Geometry. We show that the dynamics of iterative eigenvalue algorithms can be illustrated using both. v2 has the advantage that it simultaneously depicts many properties of a matrix, all of which are relevant to the study of eigenvalue algorithms. Examples of the properties of a matrix that v2…
We introduce a novel multi-resolution Localized Orthogonal Decomposition (LOD) for time-harmonic acoustic scattering problems that can be modeled by the Helmholtz equation. The method merges the concepts of LOD and operator-adapted wavelets (gamblets) and proves its applicability for a class of complex-valued, non-hermitian and indefinite problems. It computes hierarchical bases that block-diagonalize the Helmholtz operator and thereby decouples the discretization scales. Sparsity is preserved by a novel localization strategy that improves stability properties even in the elliptic case. We pre…
We introduce an iterative method named GPMR for solving 2x2 block unsymmetric linear systems. GPMR is based on a new process that reduces simultaneously two rectangular matrices to upper Hessenberg form and that is closely related to the block-Arnoldi process. GPMR is tantamount to Block-GMRES with two right-hand sides in which the two approximate solutions are summed at each iteration, but requires less storage and work per iteration. We compare the performance of GPMR with GMRES and Block-GMRES on linear systems from the SuiteSparse Matrix Collection. In our experiments, GPMR terminates sign…
The orthogonal decomposition factorizes a tensor into a sum of an orthogonal list of rankone tensors. We present several properties of orthogonal rank. We find that a subtensor may have a larger orthogonal rank than the whole tensor and prove the lower semicontinuity of orthogonal rank. The lower semicontinuity guarantees the existence of low orthogonal rank approximation. To fit the orthogonal decomposition, we propose an algorithm based on the augmented Lagrangian method and guarantee the orthogonality by a novel orthogonalization procedure. Numerical experiments show that the proposed metho…
In this work, we present a new technique for the decomposition of multivariate data, which we call Multivariate Fast Iterative Filtering (MvFIF) algorithm. We study its properties, proving rigorously that it converges in finite time when applied to the decomposition of any kind of multivariate signal. We test MvFIF performance using a wide variety of artificial and real multivariate signals, showing its ability to: separate multivariate modulated oscillations; align frequencies along different channels; produce a quasi--dyadic filterbank when decomposing white Gaussian noise; decompose the sig…
We introduce iterative methods named TriCG and TriMR for solving symmetric quasi-definite systems based on the orthogonal tridiagonalization process proposed by Saunders, Simon and Yip in 1988. TriCG and TriMR are tantamount to preconditioned Block-CG and Block-MINRES with two right-hand sides in which the two approximate solutions are summed at each iteration, but require less storage and work per iteration. We evaluate the performance of TriCG and TriMR on linear systems generated from the SuiteSparse Matrix Collection and from discretized and stablized Stokes equations. We compare TriCG and…
The Schur decomposition of a square matrix $A$ is an important intermediate step of state-of-the-art numerical algorithms for addressing eigenvalue problems, matrix functions, and matrix equations. This work is concerned with the following task: Compute a (more) accurate Schur decomposition of $A$ from a given approximate Schur decomposition. This task arises, for example, in the context of parameter-dependent eigenvalue problems and mixed precision computations. We have developed a Newton-like algorithm that requires the solution of a triangular matrix equation and an approximate orthogonaliz…

Methods for the computation of classical Gaussian quadrature rules are described which are effective both for small and large degree. These methods are reliable because the iterative computation of the nodes has guaranteed convergence, and they are fast due to their fourth-order convergence and its asymptotic exactness for an appropriate selection of the variables. For Gauss--Hermite and Gauss--Laguerre quadratures, local Taylor series can be used for computing efficiently the orthogonal polynomials involved, with exact initial values for the Hermite case and first values computed with a conti…

This paper studies a general framework for high-order tensor SVD. We propose a new computationally efficient algorithm, tensor-train orthogonal iteration (TTOI), that aims to estimate the low tensor-train rank structure from the noisy high-order tensor observation. The proposed TTOI consists of initialization via TT-SVD (Oseledets, 2011) and new iterative backward/forward updates. We develop the general upper bound on estimation error for TTOI with the support of several new representation lemmas on tensor matricizations. By developing a matching information-theoretic lower bound, we also prov…
