We consider the logarithmic Schr{ö}dinger equation (logNLS) in the focusing regime. For this equation, Gaussian initial data remains Gaussian. In particular, the Gausson-a time-independent Gaussian function-is an orbitally stable solution. In this paper, we construct multi-solitons (or multi-Gaussons) for logNLS, with estimates in $H^1 \cap \mathcal{F} (H^1)$. We also construct solutions to logNLS behaving (in $L^2$) like a sum of $N$ Gaussian solutions with different speeds (which we call multi-gaussian). In both cases, the convergence (as $t \rightarrow \infty$) is faster than exponential. We also prove a rigidity result on these multi-gaussians and multi-solitons, showing that they are the only ones with such a convergence.
We investigate the soliton dynamics for the Schrodinger-Newton system by proving a suitable modulational stability estimates in the spirit of those obtained by Weinstein for local equations.
We investigate the soliton dynamics for the fractional nonlinear Schrodinger equation by a suitable modulational inequality. In the semiclassical limit, the solution concentrates along a trajectory determined by a Newtonian equation depending of the fractional diffusion parameter.
The soliton dynamics for a general class of nonlinear focusing Schrödinger problems in presence of non-constant external (local and nonlocal) potentials is studied by taking as initial datum the ground state solution of an associated autonomous elliptic equation.
By introducing and solving two correlative constrained variational problems as well as spectrum analysis, an approach to fix soliton frequency from the prescribed mass for nonlinear Schrödinger equations is found, and an open problem in normalized solutions is answered. Then existence and orbital stability of big solitons depending on frequencies for nonlinear Schrödinger equation with competitive power nonlinearity is proved for the first time. In addition multi-solitons of the equation with different speeds are constructed by stable big solitons.
We look for solutions to generic nonlinear Schrödinger equations build upon solitons and kinks. Solitons are localized solitary waves and kinks are their non localized counter-parts. We prove the existence of infinite soliton trains, i.e. solutions behaving at large time as the sum of infinitely many solitons. We also show that one can attach a kink at one end of the train. Our proofs proceed by fixed point arguments around the desired profile. We present two approaches leading to different results, one based on a combination of dispersive estimates and Strichartz estimates, the other based on…
We will first review known results on multi-solitons of dispersive partial differential equations, which are special solutions behaving like the sum of many weakly-interacting solitary waves. We will then describe our recent joint work with Dong Li on nonlinear Schrödinger equations: Assuming the composing solitons have sufficiently large relative speeds, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a soliton train which is a multi-soliton composed of infinitely many solitons. In the 1D case, we can add to the infinite train an additional half-kink, which is a solution with a non-zero background a…
In this note we construct mixed dimensional infinite soliton trains, which are solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations whose asymptotic profiles at time infinity consist of infinitely many solitons of multiple dimensions. For example infinite line-point soliton trains in 2D space, and infinite plane-line-point soliton trains in 3D space. This note extends the works of Le Coz, Li and Tsai [5, 6], where single dimensional trains are considered. In our approach, spatial $L^\infty$ bounds for lower dimensional trains play an essential role.
We study *infinite soliton trains* solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS), i.e. solutions behaving at large time as the sum of infinitely many solitary waves. Assuming the composing solitons have sufficiently large relative speeds, we prove the existence and uniqueness of such a soliton train. We also give a new construction of multi-solitons (i.e. finite trains) and prove uniqueness in an exponentially small neighborhood, and we consider the case of solutions composed of several solitons and kinks (i.e. solutions with a non-zero background at infinity).
In this paper we study the Nonlinear Schrödinger-Maxwell equations (NSM). We are interested to analyse the existence of solitons, namely of finite energy solutions which exhibit stability properties. This paper is divided in two parts. In the first, we give an abstract definition of soliton and we develope an abstract existence theory. In the second, we apply this theory to NSM.
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a nontrival potential $V_\varepsilon(x)$. In particular, we consider the case where the initial data is close to a superposition of $k$ solitons with prescribed phase and location, and investigate the evolution of the Schrödinger system. We prove that over a large time interval with the maximum time tending to infinity, all $k$ solitons will maintain the shape, and the solitons dynamics can be regarded as an approximation of $k$ particles moving in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with their accelerations dominated by $\nabla …
In this paper, a class of coupled systems of nonlinear Schrodinger equations with sign-changing potential, including the linearly coupled case, is considered. The existence of non-trivial bound state solutions via linking methods for cones in Banach spaces is proved.
Mountain pass in a suitable Orlicz space is employed to prove the existence of soliton solutions for a quasilinear Schrödinger equation involving critical exponent in ${\BR}^N$. These equations contain strongly singular nonlinearities which include derivatives of the second order. Such equations have been studied as models of several physical phenomena. The nonlinearity here corresponds to the superfluid film equation in plasma physics.
The large-time behavior of solutions to the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation is established for initial conditions in some weighted Sobolev spaces under the assumption that the initial conditions do not support solitons. Our approach uses the inverse scattering setting and the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou as recast by Dieng and McLaughlin.
For the L2 supercritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation, we proved in a previous article the existence and uniqueness of an N-parameter family of N-solitons. Recall that, for any N given solitons, we call N-soliton a solution of the equation which behaves as the sum of these N solitons asymptotically as time goes to infinity. In the present paper, we also construct an N-parameter family of N-solitons for the supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation, in dimension 1 for the sake of simplicity. Nevertheless, we do not obtain any classification result; but recall that, even in subcriti…
Consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with a potential with a single negative eigenvalue. It has solitons with negative small energy, which are asymptotically stable, and, if the nonlinearity is focusing, then also solitons with positive large energy, which are unstable. In this paper we classify the global dynamics below the second lowest energy of solitons under small mass and radial symmetry constraints.
In this paper, we give an alternative proof for the asymptotic stability of solitons for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with internal modes. The novel idea is to use "refined profiles" developed by the authors for the analysis of small bound states. By this new strategy, we able to avoid the normal forms. Further, we can track the functions appearing in the Fermi Golden Rule hypothesis.
We show that, for the 1d cubic NLS equation, widely separated equal amplitude in-phase solitons attract and opposite-phase solitons repel. Our result gives an exact description of the evolution of the two solitons valid until the solitons have moved a distance comparable to the logarithm of the initial separation. Our method does not use the inverse scattering theory and should be applicable to nonintegrable equations with local nonlinearities that support solitons with exponentially decaying tails. The result is presented as a special case of a general framework which also addresses, for exam…
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a general nonlinearity. In dimension higher than 2, this equation admits travelling wave solutions with a fixed profile which is not the ground state. This kind of profiles are called excited states. In this paper, we construct solutions to NLS behaving like a sum of N excited states which spread up quickly as time grows (which we call multi-solitons). We also show that if the flow around one of these excited states is linearly unstable, then the multi-soliton is not unique, and is unstable.
We review recent results on global wellposedness and long-time behavior of smooth solutions to the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation. Using the integrable character of DNLS, we show how the inverse scattering tools and the method of Zhou for treating spectral singularities lead to global wellposedness for general initial conditions in the weighted Sobolev space $H^{2,2}(\mathbb{R})$. For generic initial data that can support bright solitons but exclude spectral singularities, we prove the soliton resolution conjecture: the solution is asymptotic, at large times, to a sum of loca…
The semiclassical limit of a nonlinear focusing Schrödinger equation in presence of nonconstant electric and magnetic potentials V,A is studied by taking as initial datum the ground state solution of an associated autonomous elliptic equation. The concentration curve of the solutions is a parameterization of the solutions of a Newton ODE involving the electric force as well as the magnetic force via the Lorenz law of electrodynamics.
We consider the one-dimensional cubic fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$i\partial_tu-(-Δ)^σu+|u|^{2}u=0,$$ where $σ\in (\frac12,1)$ and the operator $(-Δ)^σ$ is the fractional Laplacian of symbol $|ξ|^{2σ}$. Despite of lack of any Galilean-type invariance, we construct a new class of traveling soliton solutions of the form $$u(t,x)=e^{-it(|k|^{2σ}-ω^{2σ})}Q_{ω,k}(x-2tσ|k|^{2σ-2}k),\quad k\in\mathbb{R},\ ω>0$$ by a rather involved variational argument.
In this paper we study the validity of a Gausson (soliton) dynamics of the logarithmic Schrödinger equation in presence of a smooth external potential.
In this paper, we prove the asymptotic stability of nonlinear Schrodiger equations on star graphs, which partially solves an open problem in D. Noja \cite{DN}. The essential ingredient of our proof is the dispersive estimate for the linearized operator around the soliton with Kirchhoff boundary condition. In order to obtain the dispersive estimates, we use the Born's series technique and scattering theory for the linearized operator.
In this note, we give an alternative proof of the theorem on soliton selection for small energy solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) which we studied in Anal. PDE 8 (2015), 1289-1349 and more recently in Annals of PDE (2021) 7:16. As in in the latter paper we use the notion of Refined Profile, with the difference that here we do not modify the modulation coordinates and we do not search for Darboux coordinates. This shortens considerably the proof.
We prove a weak form of the soliton resolution conjecture of bounded solutions of high-dimensional fourth-order Schrodinger equations. The result relies upon two properties to be proved: the asymptotic frequency localization and the asymptotic spatial localization. In order to prove the asymptotic frequency localization we use the fact that the high frequency pieces of the free solution have better dispersive properties than the lower ones. In order to prove the asymptotic spatial localization, we use the symmetries of the phase of the fundamental solution.
We study a class of logarithmic Schrodinger equations with periodic potential which come from physically relevant situations and obtain the existence of infinitely many geometrically distinct solutions.
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a focusing cubic term and a defocusing quintic nonlinearity in dimensions two and three. The core of this article is the notion of stability of solitary waves. We recall the two standard notions of orbital stability in the context of nonlinear Schrödinger equations, and show that they must be considered as independent from each other. We investigate numerically the notion of orbital stability of ground states in the radially symmetric case, confirming existing conjectures or leading to new ones.
By means of non-smooth critical point theory we obtain existence of infinitely many weak solutions of the fractional Schrödinger equation with logarithmic nonlinearity. We also investigate the Hölder regularity of the weak solutions.
We consider the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation: \[ i\partial_t u = -Δu - |u|^2u + |u|^4u. \] In the first part of the paper, we analyze the one-parameter family of ground-state solitons associated to this equation with particular attention to the shape of the associated mass/energy curve. Additionally, we are able to characterize the kernel of the linearized operator about such solitons and to demonstrate that they occur as optimizers for a one-parameter family of inequalities of Gagliardo--Nirenberg type. Building on this work, in the latter part of the paper we prove that scatt…
In this paper, we study the transverse stability of the line Schrödinger soliton under a full wave guide Schrödinger flow on a cylindrical domain $\mathbb R\times\mathbb T$. When the nonlinearity is of power type $|ψ|^{p-1}ψ$ with $p>1$, we show that there exists a critical frequency $ω_{p} >0$ such that the line standing wave is stable for $0<ω< ω_{p}$ and unstable for $ω> ω_{p}$. Furthermore, we characterize the ground state of the wave guide Schrödinger equation. More precisely, we prove that there exists $ω_{*} \in (0, ω_{p}]$ such that the ground states coincide with the line standing wav…
In this work we mainly consider the dynamics and scattering of a narrow soliton of NLS equation with a potential in $\mathbb{R}^3$, where the asymptotic state of the system can be far from the initial state in parameter space. Specifically, if we let a narrow soliton state with initial velocity $\upsilon_{0}$ to interact with an extra potential $V(x)$, then the velocity $\upsilon_{+}$ of outgoing solitary wave in infinite time will in general be very different from $\upsilon_{0}$. In contrast to our present work, previous works proved that the soliton is asymptotically stable under the assumpt…
In this paper we present a proof of the orbital stability of ground state for logarithmic Schrödinger equation in any dimension and under nonradial perturbations.
Consider the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a potential with a single negative eigenvalue. It has solitons with negative small energy, which are asymptotically stable, and solitons with positive large energy, which are unstable. We classify the global dynamics into 9 sets of solutions in the phase space including both solitons, restricted by small mass, radial symmetry, and an energy bound slightly above the second lowest one of solitons. The classification includes a stable set of solutions which start near the first excited solitons, approach the ground states locally in space …
We consider the problem of the soliton propagation, in a slowly varying medium, for a generalized, variable-coefficients nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We prove existence and uniqueness of new soliton-like solutions for a large class of slowly varying media. Moreover, we describe for all time the behavior of this new generalized soliton solution.
We show that gradient shrinking, expanding or steady Ricci solitons have potentials leading to suitable reference probability measures on the manifold. For shrinking solitons, as well as expanding soltions with nonnegative Ricci curvature, these reference measures satisfy sharp logarithmic Sobolev inequalities with lower bounds characterized by the geometry of the manifold. The geometric invariant appearing in the sharp lower bound is shown to be nonnegative. We also characterize the expanders when such invariant is zero. In the proof various useful volume growth estimates are also established…
We consider asymptotic stability of a small solitary wave to supercritical 2-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations $$ iu_t+Δu=Vu\pm |u|^{p-1}u \quad\text{for $(x,t)\in\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{R}$,}$$ in the energy class.
In this paper we give a simple and short proof of asymptotic stability of soliton for discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation near anti-continuous limit. Our novel insight is that the analysis of linearized operator, usually non-symmetric, can be reduced to a study of simple self-adjoint operator almost like the free discrete Laplacian restricted on odd functions.
We study the Derivative Nonlinear Schrödinger equation for general initial conditions in weighted Sobolev spaces that can support bright solitons (but excluding spectral singularities). We prove global well-posedness and give a full description of the long- time behavior of the solutions in the form of a finite sum of localized solitons and a dispersive component. At leading order and in space-time cones, the solution has the form of a multi-soliton whose parameters are slightly modified from their initial values by soliton-soliton and soliton-radiation interactions. Our analysis provides an e…
We present new solutions in terms of elementary functions of the multi-component nonlinear Schrödinger equations and known solutions of the Davey-Stewartson equations such as multi-soliton, breather, dromion and lump solutions. These solutions are given in a simple determinantal form and are obtained as limiting cases in suitable degenerations of previously derived algebro-geometric solutions. In particular we present for the first time breather and rational breather solutions of the multi-component nonlinear Schrödinger equations.
We establish soliton-like asymptotics for finite energy solutions to the Schrödinger equation coupled to a nonrelativistic classical particle. Any solution with initial state close to the solitary manifold, converges to a sum of traveling wave and outgoing free wave. The convergence holds in global energy norm. The proof uses spectral theory and the symplectic projection onto solitary manifold in the Hilbert phase space.
In this paper, we study the bifurcation problem from a line soliton for a stationary nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the product space $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}$. We extend earlier results to a larger class of the nonlinearity in the equation. The salient point of our analysis relies on a lower bound of solution to the ``auxiliary equation'' and then on the application of the Crandall-Rabinowitz argument
We study the Derivative Nonlinear Schrödinger equation for generic initial data in a weighted Sobolev space that can support bright solitons (but exclude spectral singularities). Drawing on previous well-posedness results, we give a full description of the long-time behavior of the solutions in the form of a finite sum of localized solitons and a dispersive component. At leading order and in space-time cones, the solution has the form of a multi-soliton whose parameters are slightly modified from their initial values by soliton-soliton and soliton-radiation interactions. Our analysis provides …
The Cauchy problem of the modified nonlinear Schrödinger (mNLS) equation with the finite density type initial data is investigated via $\overline{\partial}$ steepest descent method. In the soliton region of space-time $x/t\in(5,7)$, the long-time asymptotic behavior of the mNLS equation is derived for large times. Furthermore, for general initial data in a non-vanishing background, the soliton resolution conjecture for the mNLS equation is verified, which means that the asymptotic expansion of the solution can be characterized by finite number of soliton solutions as the time $t$ tends to infi…
The integrable nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger (NNLS) equation with the self-induced parity-time-symmetric potential [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 064105] is investigated, which is an integrable extension of the standard NLS equation. Its novel higher-order rational solitons are found using the nonlocal version of the generalized perturbation (1, N-1)-fold Darboux transformation. These rational solitons illustrate abundant wave structures for the distinct choices of parameters (e.g., the strong and weak interactions of bright and dark rational solitons). Moreover, we also explore the dynamical b…
A new four-component nonlinear Schrödinger equation is first proposed in this work and studied by Riemann-Hilbert approach. Firstly, we derive a Lax pair associated with a $5\times5$ matrix spectral problem for the four-component nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Then based on the Lax pair, we analyze the spectral problem and the analytical properties of the Jost functions, from which the Riemann-Hilbert problem of the equation is successfully established. Moreover, we obtain the $N$-soliton solutions of the equation by solving the Riemann-Hilbert problem without reflection. Finally, we derive t…
