The two-dimensional (zero magnetic field) Ising model is known to undergo a second order para-ferromagnetic phase transition, which is accompanied by a correlated percolation transition for the Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) clusters. In this paper we uncover that there exists also a second temperature $T_{\text{eb}}<T_c$ at which the elastic backbone of FK clusters undergoes a second order phase transition to a dense phase. The corresponding universality class, which is characterized by determining various percolation exponents, is shown to be completely different from directed percolation, proposing a new anisotropic universality class with $β=0.54\pm 0.02$, $ν_{||}=1.86\pm 0.01$, $ν_{\perp}=1.21\pm 0.04$ and $d_f=1.53\pm 0.03$. All tested hyper-scaling relations are shown to be valid.
We study the cluster, the backbone and the elastic backbone structures of the multiple invasion percolation for both the perimeter and the optimized versions. We investigate the behavior of the mass, the number of red sites (i. e., sites through which all the current passes) and loops of those structures. Their corresponding scaling exponents are also estimated. By construction, the mass of the optimized model scales exactly with the gyration radius of the cluster - we verify that this also happens to the backbone. Our simulation shows that the red sites almost disappear, indicating that the c…
We investigate the number of red sites on the elastic and real backbone when right at the percolation threshold a spanning cluster exists between two sites at opposite faces of the lattice and found that it scales in the same way as in the case of percolation between two plates. We also find out that the number of common red sites scales similarly for both kinds of backbones for percolation between pairs of sites on opposite faces of the lattice. Our statistics for several quantities show that the the exponent for the elastic backbone approaches the one of the full backbone as dimensionality i…
The elastic backbone is the set of all shortest paths. We found a new phase transition at $p_{eb}$ above the classical percolation threshold at which the elastic backbone becomes dense. At this transition in $2d$ its fractal dimension is $1.750\pm 0.003$, and one obtains a novel set of critical exponents $β_{eb} = 0.50\pm 0.02$, $γ_{eb} = 1.97\pm 0.05$, and $ν_{eb} = 2.00\pm 0.02$ fulfilling consistent critical scaling laws. Interestingly, however, the hyperscaling relation is violated. Using Binder's cumulant, we determine, with high precision, the critical probabilities $p_{eb}$ for the tria…
Simple elastic models of spin-crossover compounds are known empirically to exhibit classical critical behavior. We demonstrate how the long-ranged interactions responsible for this behavior arise naturally upon integrating out mechanical fluctuations of such a model. A mean field theory applied to the resulting effective Hamiltonian quantitatively accounts for both thermodynamics and kinetics observed in computer simulations, including a barrier to magnetization reversal that grows extensively with system size. For nanocrystals, which break translational symmetry, a straightforward extension o…
We present a numerical Monte Carlo analysis of a continuos spin Ising chain that can describe the statistical proterties of folded proteins. We find that depending on the value of the Metropolis temperature, the model displays the three known nontrivial phases of polymers: At low temperatures the model is in a collapsed phase, at medium temperatures it is in a random walk phase, and at high temperatures it enters the self-avoiding random walk phase. By investigating the temperature dependence of the specific energy we confirm that the transition between the collapsed phase and the random walk …
Geometrically frustrated materials have a ground-state degeneracy that may be lifted by subtle effects, such as higher order interactions causing small energetic preferences for ordered structures. Alternatively, ordering may result from entropic differences between configurations in an effect termed order-by-disorder. Motivated by recent experiments in a frustrated colloidal system in which ordering is suspected to result from entropy, we consider in this paper, the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a deformable triangular lattice. We calculate the displacements exactly at the microscopic leve…
Two-particle scattering in Ising field theory in a weak magnetic field h is studied in the regime T>T_c, using perturbation theory in h^2. We calculate explicitly the cross-section of the process 2->3 to the order h^2. To this order, the corresponding cross-section dominates the total cross-section (the probability of all inelastic processes) at all energies E. We show that at high energies the h^2 term in the total cross-section grows as 16 G_3 h^2 log(E) where G_3 is exactly the third moment of the Euclidean spin-spin correlation function. Going beyond the leading order, we argue that at sma…
The Ising one-dimensional (1D) chain with spin $S=1/2$ and magnetoelastic interactions is studied with the lattice contribution included in the form of elastic interaction and thermal vibrations simultaneously taken into account. The magnetic energy term and the elastic (static) energy term based on the Morse potential are calculated exactly. The vibrational energy is calculated in the Debye approximation, in which the anharmonicity is introduced by the Gr{ü}neisen parameter. The total Gibbs potential, including both the magnetic field, as well as the external force term, is constructed and fr…
The elastic interaction, induced by the lattice distortion due to the difference of the molecular size, causes an effective long-range interaction. In spin-crossover (SC) compounds, local bistable states, i.e., high-spin and low-spin states have different molecular sizes, and the elastic interaction is important. In bipartite lattices, e.g., the square lattice, the ground state can be two types of phases: ferromagnetic-like (FM) and antiferromagnetic-like (AFM) phases. In systems like SC compounds, the former phase consists of all small or large molecules, and the latter phase has the configur…
We present the general theory of Ising transitions in isotropic elastic media with vanishing thermal expansion. By constructing a minimal model with appropriate spin-lattice couplings, we show that in two dimensions near a continuous transition the elasticity is anomalous in unusual ways: the system either significantly stiffens with a hitherto unknown unique positional order logarithmically stronger than quasi-long range order, or, as the inversion-asymmetry of the order parameter in its coupling with strain increases, it destabilizes when system size $L$ exceeds a finite threshold. At three …
Paradigm for approaching the forbidden phase transition in the one-dimensional Ising model at fixed finite temperature: Single chain in a magnetic field
We study the phase diagram of an elastic interaction model for spin crossover (SC) materials with antiferromagnetic-like short-range interactions. In this model, the interplay between the short-range interaction and the long-range interaction of elastic origin causes complex phase transitions. For relatively weak elastic interactions, the phase diagram is characterized by tricritical points, at which antiferromagnetic (AF) -like and ferromagnetic (F) -like spinodal lines and a critical line merge. On the other hand, for relatively strong elastic interactions, unusual "horn structures," which a…
Phase diagram and pattern formation in two-dimensional Ising model with coupling between order parameter and lattice vibrations is investigated by Monte-Carlo simulations. It is shown that if the coupling is strong enough (or phonons are soft enough) a short-range order exists in disordered phase for a broader temperature interval. Different types of this short-range order (stripe-like, checkboard-like, etc.) depending on the temperature and model parameters are investigated. With further increase of the coupling, a reconstruction of the ground state happens and new ordered phases appear at lo…
We calculate the fractal dimension $d_{\rm f}$ of critical curves in the $O(n)$ symmetric $(\vec ϕ^2)^2$-theory in $d=4-\varepsilon$ dimensions at 6-loop order. This gives the fractal dimension of loop-erased random walks at $n=-2$, self-avoiding walks ($n=0$), Ising lines $(n=1)$, and XY lines ($n=2$), in agreement with numerical simulations. It can be compared to the fractal dimension $d_{\rm f}^{\rm tot}$ of all lines, i.e. backbone plus the surrounding loops, identical to $d_{\rm f}^{\rm tot} = 1/ν$. The combination $ϕ_{\rm c}= d_{\rm f}/d_{\rm f}^{\rm tot} = νd_{\rm f}$ is the crossover e…
To understand the collinear-magnetism-driven ferroelectricity in multiferroic Ca3CoMnO6 compound, we have established an elastic diatomic Ising spin-chain model with axial-next-nearest-neighbor interaction to describe its magnetoelectric properties. By employing magneto-phonon decoupling and transfer-matrix method, the possible ground-state configurations and thermodynamic behaviors of the system have been exactly determined. From the perspective of the ground-state configuration, we analyze the computational results and make a detail comparison with experimental data. The parameter relation f…
We present a Monte Carlo study of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) clusters of the Ising model on the square (2D) and simple-cubic (3D) lattices. The wrapping probability, a dimensionless quantity characterizing the topology of the FK clusters on a torus, is found to suffer from smaller finite-size corrections than the well-known Binder ratio, and yields a high-precision critical coupling as $K_c(3\rm D)=0.221\,654\,631(8)$. We then study geometric properties of the FK clusters at criticality. It is demonstrated that the distribution of the critical largest-cluster size $C_1$ follows a single-variab…
The three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin-glass model present strong spatial heterogeneities well characterized by the so-called backbone, a magnetic structure that arises as a consequence of the properties of the ground state and the low-excitation levels of such a frustrated Ising system. Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations and finite size scaling, we study how these heterogeneities affect the phase transition of the model. Although, we do not detect any significant difference between the critical behavior displayed by the whole system and that observed inside and outside the backbone,…
We analyze, in both (1+1)- and (2+1)- dimensions, a periodic elastic medium in which the periodicity is such that at long distances the behavior is always in the random-substrate universality class. This contrasts with the models with an additive periodic potential in which, according to the field theoretic analysis of Bouchaud and Georges and more recently of Emig and Nattermann, the random manifold class dominates at long distances in (1+1)- and (2+1)-dimensions. The models we use are random-bond Ising interfaces in hypercubic lattices. The exchange constants are random in a slab of size $L^…
We introduce a class of damage models on regular lattices with isotropic interactions, as e.g. quasistatic fiber bundles. The system starts intact with a surface-energy threshold required to break any cell sampled from an uncorrelated quenched-disorder distribution. The evolution of this heterogeneous system is ruled by Griffith's principle which states that a cell breaks when the release in elastic energy in the system exceeds the surface-energy barrier necessary to break the cell. By direct integration over all possible realizations of the quenched disorder, we obtain the probability distrib…
Two known distinct examples of one-dimensional systems which are known to exhibit a phase transition are critically examined: (A) a lattice model with harmonic nearest-neighbor elastic interactions and an on-site Morse potential, and (B) the ferromagnetic, spin 1/2 Ising model with long-range pair interactions varying as the inverse square of the distance between pairs. In both cases it can be shown that the domain wall configurations become entropically stable at, or very near, the critical temperature. This might provide a "positive" criterion for the occurrence of a phase transition in one-…
We consider the elastic theory for Ising transitions in an isotropic elastic medium in the zero thermal expansion (ZTE) limit. We use this theory to study the nature of the fluctuations in the system near the second phase transitions at $T_c$ in the ZTE limit given by $dT_c/dV=0$, where $V$ is the system volume, and explore anomalous elasticity. Allowing for the local strain to couple {\em asymmetrically} with the states of the order parameter, we uncover the dramatic effects of these couplings on the fluctuations of the local displacements near $T_c$, and also on the nature of the phase trans…
Two basic approaches to the cluster counting task in the percolation and related models are discussed. The Hoshen-Kopelman multiple labeling technique for cluster statistics is redescribed. Modifications for random and aperiodic lattices are sketched as well as some parallelised versions of the algorithm are mentioned. The graph-theoretical basis for the spanning tree approaches is given by describing the "breadth-first search" and "depth-first search" procedures. Examples are given for extracting the elastic and geometric "backbone" of a percolation cluster. An implementation of the "pebble g…
