The effect of substitution atoms on the energy spectrum and the electrical conductivity of graphene was investigated in a Lifshitz one-electron tight-binding model. It is established that the ordering of impurity atoms results in a gap in the energy spectrum of electrons whose width depends on the order parameter and on the magnitude of the scattering potential. It is shown that if the order parameter is close to its maximum value, there are peaks associated with localized impurity states on the energy curve of the electron states density at the edges of the energy gap. At the electron concentration at which the Fermi level enters the gap region, the electrical conductivity is zero, and the metal-dielectric transition occurs. If the Fermi level falls in the region of the energy band, the electron relaxation time and electrical conductivity tend to infinity when the order parameter reaches its maximum value. The analytical calculations of the electron density and of the electrical conductivity of graphene, made in the limiting case of weak scattering, are compared with the results of the numerical calculations for different scattering potentials.
We report comparative substitution effects of nonmagnetic Ti^(4+) and magnetic Ir^(4+) impurities for Ru^(4+) in the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4. We found that both impurities suppress the superconductivity completely at a concentration of approximately 0.15%, reflecting the high sensitivity to translational symmetry breaking in Sr2RuO4. In addition, a rapid enhancement of residual resistivity is in quantitative agreement with unitarity-limit scattering. Our result suggests that both nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities in Sr2RuO4 act as strong potential scatterers, similar to the nonma…
We report electronic Raman scattering measurements on optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7 where Zn or Ni impurities have been substituted by Cu. Using Raman selection rules, we have probed the superconducting gap in the nodal and antinodal regions. We show that under impurity substitutions, the energy of the antinodal peak detected in the superconducting state is not related to the critical temperature Tc and that signatures of superconductivity disappear in the nodal regions. Our experimental findings advocate in favor of gapless arcs around the nodes. The breakdown of the relationship between the anti…
We show that upon Tb substitution the interaction between the magnetic moments on the impurity Tb$^{4+}$ ion and its surrounding Ir$^{4+}$ ions is described by a "compass" model, i.e., Ising-like interaction favoring the magnetic moments across each bond to align along the bond direction. Such interaction nucleates quenched magnetic vortices near the impurities and drives a reentrant transition out of the antiferromagnetic ordered phase at low temperatures hence quickly suppresses the Néel temperature consistent with the experiment [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{92}, 214411 (2015)]. As a by-product, we…
We report an impurity effect in the organic superconductor $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ by substitution of the ET molecule with an analogue, bis(methyleneditio)tetrathiafulvalene (MT). The superconducting transition temperature decreases with increasing substitution. The in-plane magnetic penetration depth is enhanced with substitution, which is quantitatively attributed to the decrease in the in-plane mean free path. The enhancement of the penetration depth can also explain the reduction of the effective pinning in terms of the condensation energy.
The results of electrical resistivity, heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility behavior of new class of alloys, Ce_{2-x}La_{x}CoSi_{3}, are reported. The x= 0.0 alloy is mixed valent and La substitution for Ce (x= 0.25) induces linear temperature dependence of resistivity at low temperatures, an observation of relevance to the topic of non-Fermi liquid behavior. The modifications of Kondo effect for all the alloys are also presented.
Various physical quantities are measured and analysed for the Cu-substituted thermoelectric oxide NaCo_{2-x}Cu_xO_4. As was previously known, the substituted Cu enhances the thermoelectric power, while it does not increase the resistivity significantly. The susceptibility and the electron specific-heat are substantially decreased with increasing x, which implies that the substituted Cu decreases the effective-mass enhancement. Through a quantitative comparison with the heavy fermion compounds and the valence fluctuation systems, we have found that the Cu substitution effectively increases the …
The suppression of superconductivity by substitution effects has been measured in high quality single crystals of U(Pt_{1-x} Pd_x)_3 with 0 <= x <= 0.002. While the superconducting transition temperature T_c varies linearly with residual resistivity r_0, consistent with pair-breaking by impurity potential scattering, the rate of suppression of T_c with r_0 is much larger for Pd substitution than for other impurity substitutions or by increased defect density. This effect is correlated with an increase in the inelastic scattering coefficient, and may be related to Pd-induced changes in the magn…
Discovery of superconductivity in the impurity band formed by heavy doping of boron into diamond (C:B) as well as doping of boron into silicon (Si:B) has provided a rout for the possibility of new families of superconducting materials. Motivated by the special role played by copper atoms in high temperature superconducting materials where essentially Cu $d$ orbitals are responsible for a variety of correlation induced phases, in this paper we investigate the effect of substitutional doping of Cu into diamond. Our extensive first principle calculations averaged over various geometries based on …
Ni-substitution effects on the superconductivity and Cu-spin correlation have been investigated in La2-xSrxCu1-yNiyO4 from the electrical resistivity and muon spin relaxation measurements, taking into account the hole trapping by Ni recently suggested. It has been found that the Ni-substitution suppresses the superconductivity, induces the localization of holes and develops the Cu-spin correlation to the same degree as the Zn substitution. These suggest that Ni with a trapped hole tends to give rise to potential scattering of holes in the CuO2 plane to the same degree as Zn, being discussed in…
We have investigated the Mn-site substitution effect in Nd$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$MnO$_3$ single crystal, which has an $A$-type layered antiferromagnetic ($A$-AFM) phase with the 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$-type orbital-order. Substitution of Fe or Ga for Mn-site suppresses both the $A$-AFM order and competing ferromagnetic (FM) correlation whereas Cr substitution suppresses only the $A$-AFM order but reactivates the underlying FM correlation via double-exchange mechanism along the AFM coupled $c$-direction. In Nd$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$Mn$_{0.95}$Cr$_{0.05}$O$_3$, the $A$-AFM state with the orbital-order is chang…
The electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power and electronic thermal conductivity of simple (isotropic) metals are studied in a uniform way. Starting from results of a variational solution of the Boltzmann equation, a generalized Matthiessen rule is used in order to superpose the inelastic (or not) electron-phonon and elastic electron-impurity scattering cross sections ("matrix elements"). The temperature dependence relative to these processes is given through simple functions and physical parameters over the usually investigated range of temperature for each transport coefficient. The cohe…
Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we studied the effect of the impurity potential on the electronic structure of FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ superconductor by substituting 10\% of Ni for Fe which leads to an electron doping of the system. We could resolve three hole pockets near the zone center and an electron pocket near the zone corner in the case of FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$, whereas only two hole pockets near the zone center and an electron pocket near the zone corner are resolved in the case of Fe$_{0.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$Te$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$, suggesting that the hole pocket having…
We investigated Fe-substitution effects on ferromagnetic fluctuations in the superconducting overdoped and non-superconducting heavily overdoped regimes of the Bi-2201 cuprates by the magnetization and electrical-resistivity measurements. It was found that the spin-glass state was induced at low temperatures by the Fe substitution. The Curie constant and the effective Bohr magneton, estimated from the magnetic susceptibility, as well as the dimensionality of the ferromagnetic fluctuations from the resistivity, suggest the enhancement of the ferromagnetic fluctuations owing to the Fe substituti…
Non-magnetic impurities in iron-based superconductors can provide an important tool to understand the pair symmetry and they can influence significantly the transport and the superconducting behaviour. Here, we present a study of the role of strong impurity potential in the Fe plane, induced by Cu substitution, on the electronic and superconducting properties of single crystals of FeSe. The addition of Cu quickly suppresses both the nematic and superconducting states, and increases the residual resistivity due to enhanced impurity scattering. Using magnetotransport data up to 35 T for a small …
Impurity effects on the triangular antiferromagnets Ni$_{1-x}M_x$Ga$_2$S$_4$ ($M=$ Mn, Fe, Co and Zn) are studied. The 2D frozen spin-disordered state of NiGa$_2$S$_4$ is stable against the substitution of Zn$^{2+}$ ($S=0$) and Heisenberg Fe$^{2+}$ ($S=2$) spins, and exhibits a $T^2$-dependent magnetic specific heat, scaled by the Weiss temperature. In contrast, the substitutions with Co$^{2+}$ ($S=3/2$) spin with Ising-like anisotropy and Heisenberg Mn$^{2+}$ ($S=5/2$) spin induce a conventional spin glass phase. From these comparisons, it is suggested that integer size of Heisenberg spins is…
Transport in an ideal two-dimensional quantum spin Hall device is dominated by the counterpropagating edge states of electrons with opposite spins, giving the universal value of the conductance, $2e^2/h$. We study the effect on the conductance of a magnetic impurity, which can backscatter an electron from one edge state to the other. In the case of isotropic Kondo exchange we find that the correction to the electrical conductance caused by such an impurity vanishes in the dc limit, while the thermal conductance does acquire a finite correction due to the spin-flip backscattering.
Precise neutron-scattering experiments on La$_{1.88-y}$Sr$_{0.12+y}$Cu$_{0.99}$R$_{0.01}$O$_4$ ($y$=0 for R=Cu, Zn and $y$=0.01 for R=Ga, Fe) were performed to examine the stability of stripe order in cuprate oxides through impurity substitution effects. For all the impurity-substituted samples a static charge-density-wave order similar to that reported in the low-temperature-tetragonal phase (LTT) was discovered in the low-temperature-orthorhombic (LTO) phase for the first time. Fe substitution significantly enhanced both the charge- and spin-density-wave orders. These results indicate that d…
We have investigated anisotropy in magnetic and electrical transport properties of Fe1-xCrxSb2 (0<= x <=1) single crystals. The magnetic ground state of the system evolves from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic with gradual substitution of Fe with Cr. Anisotropy in electrical transport diminishes with increased Cr substitution and fades away by x=0.5. We find that the variable range hopping (VRH) conduction mechanism dominates at low temperatures for 0.4<= x <=0.75.
The spin fluctuation spectra from nonsuperconducting Cu-substituted, and superconducting Co-substituted, BaFe2As2 are compared quantitatively by inelastic neutron scattering measurements and are found to be indis- tinguishable. Whereas diffraction studies show the appearance of incommensurate spin-density wave order in Co and Ni substituted samples, the magnetic phase diagram for Cu substitution does not display incommensu- rate order, demonstrating that simple electron counting based on rigid-band concepts is invalid. These results, supported by theoretical calculations, suggest that substitu…
We report low-temperature measurements of the electrical resistivity of Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 single crystals with 0 <= x <= 0.12. The isoelectronic substitution of Co on the Rh site leads to a decrease of the unit cell volume which stabilizes the antiferromagnetism. Consequently, the antiferromagnetic transition temperature increases upon Co substitution. For x = 0.07 Co content a subsequent low-temperature transition is observed in agreement with susceptibility measurements and results on YbRh2Si2 under hydrostatic pressure. Above the Neel transition the resistivity follows a non-Fermi liquid beh…
The study of the anion ordered (TMTSF)\_2ClO\_4\_(1-x)ReO\_4\_x, solid solution in the limit of a low ReO\_4- substitution level (0<=x<=17%) has revealed a new and interesting phase diagram. Superconductivity is drastically suppressed as the effect of ReO\_4- non magnetic point defects increases following the digamma behaviour for usual superconductors in the presence of paramagnetic impurities. Then, no long range order can be stabilized above 0.1K in a narrow window of substitution. Finally, an insulating SDW ground state in ReO\_4- -rich samples is rapidly stabilized with the decrease of th…
The interplay of disorder and interactions is a subject of perennial interest. In this work, we have investigated the effect of disorder due to chemical substitution on the dynamics and transport properties of correlated Fermi liquids. A low frequency analysis in the concentrated and dilute limits shows that the dynamical local potentials arising through disorder averaging generate a linear (in frequency) term in the scattering rate. Such non-Fermi liquid behaviour (nFL) is investigated in detail for Kondo hole substitution in heavy fermions within dynamical mean field theory. We find closed f…
Impurity substitution of Zn in La-214 and (Y,Ca)-123 high-T_c superconductors suppresses T_c but does not affect appreciably the onset of the pseudogap phase in the underdoped region nor optimal doping or the position of the inferred quantum critical point. Based on a 1/N expansion of the t-J model we explain these findings as well as the similar dependence on a magnetic field in terms of a quantum critical point scenario where a flux phase causes the pseudogap.
We investigate the effect of substituting Si for Ge in the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe. Dc-magnetization, ac-susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements on polycrystalline UCoGe$_{1-x}$Si$_x$ samples show that ferromagnetic order and superconductivity are progressively depressed with increasing Si content and simultaneously vanish at a critical concentration $x_{cr} \simeq 0.12$. The non-Fermi liquid temperature variation in the electrical resistivity near $x_{cr}$ and the smooth depression of the ordered moment point to a continuous ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. Su…
The effect of $^{16}$O $\to$ $^{18}$O isotope substitution on electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of Sm$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ manganites is analyzed. It is shown that the oxygen isotope substitution drastically affects the phase diagram at the crossover region between the ferromagnetic metal state and that of antiferromagnetic insulator (0.4 $< x <$ 0.6), and induces the metal-insulator transition at for $x$ = 0.475 and 0.5. The nature of antiferromagnetic insulator phase is discussed.
We consider the problem of screening of an electrically charged impurity in a clean graphene sheet. When electron-electron interactions are neglected, the screening charge has a sign opposite to that of the impurity, and is localized near the impurity. Interactions between electrons smear out the induced charge density to give a large-distance tail that follows approximately, but not exactly, an r^{-2} behavior and with a sign which is the same as that of the impurity.
A persistent kink in the pressure dependence of the \hidden order" (HO) transition temperature of URu2-xRexSi2 is observed at a critical pressure Pc=15 kbar for 0 < x < 0.08. In URu2Si2, the kink at Pc is accompanied by the destruction of superconductivity; a change in the magnitude of a spin excitation gap, determined from electrical resistivity measurements; and a complete gapping of a portion of the Fermi surface (FS), inferred from a change in scattering and the competition between the HO state and superconductivity for FS fraction.
Based on the five-orbital model, we derive the reduced impurity scattering rate $g=zγ/2πT_{c0}$ in Sm(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_{x}$)AsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ from the residual resistivity. At $x=0$, the transition temperature is $T_{c0}=50$ K. For $0.05<x<0.36$ ($0.84>T_{c}/T_{c0}>0.3$) the obtained value of $g$ ranges from 1.5 to 2.9, which suggests that the $s_\pm$-wave state cannot survive. We point out that the magnetoresistance frequently gives an underestimated value of $g$ in correlated electron systems.
The nonmagnetic impurity effect is studied on the Fe-based BaFe1.89Co0.11As2 superconductor (Tc = 25 K) with Zn substitution for Fe up to 8 at. %, which is achieved by means of high-pressure and high-temperature heating. Tc decreases almost linearly with increasing the Zn content and disappears at ~8 atomic %, being different in the shared phenomenology of the early Zn doping studies, where Tc decreases little. The Tc decreasing rate, however, remains much lower (3.63 K/%) than what is expected for the s(+-)-wave model, implying the model is unlikely. Another symmetry model such as the non-sig…
The effect of nonmagnetic impurities and the effective masses on the spin-dependent transport in a ferromagnet-normal metal-ferromagnet junction is investigated on the basis of a two-band model. Our results show that impurities and the effective masses of electrons in two ferromagnetic electrodes have remarkable effects on the behaviors of the conductance, namely, both affect the oscillating amplitudes, periods, as well as the positions of the resonant peaks of the conductance considerably. The impurity tends to suppress the amplitudes of the conductance, and makes the spin-valve effect less o…
Neutron scattering experiments have been carried out to explore Ni-impurity effects on static spin correlations in La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) in the vicinity of the superconductor-insulator boundary where both parallel and diagonal spin-density modulations (SDM) coexist at low temperature. Upon dilute Ni substitution the incommensurability decreases for both types of SDM, while the volume fraction of the diagonal (parallel) SDM increases (decreases). Subsequent Ni doping induces a bulk three-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) order when x ~ Ni concentration. TN of such the AF order depends on x and s…
We have investigated the magnetic and electrical resistance behaviour of Ca$_{3-x}$Y$_x$LiRuO$_6$. The parent compound exhibits magnetic ordering from Ru sublattice at a rather high temperature, 113 K. Though the paramagnetic Curie temperature ($θ$$_p$) is negative indicative of antiferromagnetic ordering, the large magnitude (-250 K) of $θ$$_p$ reveals complex nature of the magnetism in this compound. Ru ions appear to be in the pentavalent state. We note that the Néel temperature undergoes only a marginal reduction by Y substitution. All these compositions are found to be insulators and thus…
We obtain general expressions for the residual density of states, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity for non-unitary superconductors due to impurity scattering. We apply the results to the so-called `B phase' of PrOs4Sb12, which we describe using a non-unitary gap function derived from symmetry considerations. The conductivity tensor has inequivalent diagonal components due to off-axis nodal positions which may be detectable in experiments.
Analysis on very detailed measurements of resistivity ($ ρ$) and thermoelectric power (S) of magnetic impurity (Co) substituted iron silicide (FeSi) has been presented in this report. The impurity valence electrons of Co dominate the whole physical properties at low temperatures below 35 K, below the critical concentration x$_{c}$. The negative thermopower and the positive slope in the resistivity at low temperatures are exotic and show that the system is not entirely insulator below the critical concentration of MIT (x$_{c}$). So, due to the external impurity electrons, the system's magnetic …
We report measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and thermoelectric power on the system Pr1-xCexPt4Ge12. Superconductivity is suppressed with increasing Ce concentration up to x = 0.5, above which there is no evidence for superconductivity down to 1.1 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient γ increases with increasing x from 48 mJ/mol K^2 up to 120 mJ/mol K^2 at x = 0.5, indicating an increase in strength of electronic correlations. The temperature dependence of the specific heat at low temperatures evolves from roughly T^3 for x = 0 to e^(-Δ/T) behavior for x = …
We present the effect of yttrium substitution on superconductivity in the La$_{1-\textit{x}}$Y$_{\textit{x}}$O$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ system. Polycrystalline samples with nominal Y concentrations up to 40% were synthesized and characterized via electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements. Y substitution reduces the lattice parameter \textit{a} and unit cell volume \textit{V}, and a correlation between the lattice parameter \textit{c}, the La-O-La bond angle, and the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ is observed. The chemical pressure induced by Y…
Angle-resolved photoemission measurements were performed on Zn-doped La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) to investigate the effects of Zn impurities on the low energy electronic structure. The Zn-impurity-induced increase in the quasi-particle (QP) width in momentum distribution curves (MDC) is approximately isotropic on the entire Fermi surface and energy-independent near the Fermi level (EF). The increase in the MDC width is consistent with the increase in the residual resistivity due to the Zn impurities if we assume the carrier number to be 1-x for x=0.17 and the Zn impurity to be a potential scatterer cl…
The effect of Mn substitution, acting as a magnetic impurity for Fe, on the Dirac cone was investigated in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As)$_2$. Both magnetoresistance and Hall resistivity studies clearly indicate that the cyclotron effective mass ($m^{\ast}$) of the Dirac cone is anomalously enhanced at low temperatures by the impurity, although its evolution as a function of carrier number proceeds in a conventional manner at higher temperatures. Kondo-like band renormalization induced by the magnetic impurity scattering is suggested as an explanation for this, and the anomalous mass enhancement of th…
