High-resolution (HR) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides detailed anatomical information that is critical for diagnosis in the clinical application. However, HR MRI typically comes at the cost of long scan time, small spatial coverage, and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Recent studies showed that with a deep convolutional neural network (CNN), HR generic images could be recovered from low-resolution (LR) inputs via single image super-resolution (SISR) approaches. Additionally, previous works have shown that a deep 3D CNN can generate high-quality SR MRIs by using learned image priors. However, 3D CNN with deep structures, have a large number of parameters and are computationally expensive. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D CNN architecture, namely a multi-level densely connected super-resolution network (mDCSRN), which is light-weight, fast and accurate. We also show that with the generative adversarial network (GAN)-guided training, the mDCSRN-GAN provides appealing sharp SR images with rich texture details that are highly comparable with the referenced HR images. Our results from experiments on a large public dataset with 1,113 subjects showed that this new architecture outperformed other popular deep learning methods in recovering 4x resolution-downgraded images in both quality and speed.

We propose a GAN-based architecture using densely connected convolutional neural networks (DenseNets) to be able to super-resolve overhead imagery with a factor of up to 8x. We have also investigated resolution limits of these networks. We report results …

Low-field (LF) MRI scanners have the power to revolutionize medical imaging by providing a portable and cheaper alternative to high-field MRI scanners. However, such scanners are usually significantly noisier and lower quality than their high-field counterparts. The aim of this paper is to improve the SNR and overall image quality of low-field MRI scans to improve diagnostic capability. To address this issue, we propose a Nested U-Net neural network architecture super-resolution algorithm that outperforms previously suggested deep learning methods with an average PSNR of 78.83 and SSIM of 0.95…

Capturing high-resolution magnetic resonance (MR) images is a time consuming process, which makes it unsuitable for medical emergencies and pediatric patients. Low-resolution MR imaging, by contrast, is faster than its high-resolution counterpart, but it compromises on fine details necessary for a more precise diagnosis. Super-resolution (SR), when applied to low-resolution MR images, can help increase their utility by synthetically generating high-resolution images with little additional time. In this paper, we present a SR technique for MR images that is based on generative adversarial netwo…
In practical application, the performance of recognition network usually decreases when being applied on super-resolution images. In this paper, we propose a feature-based recognition network combined with GAN (FGAN). Our network improves the recognition accuracy by extracting more features that benefit recognition from SR images. In the experiment, we build three datasets using three different super-resolution algorithm, and our network increases the recognition accuracy by more than 6% comparing with ReaNet50 and DenseNet121.

Learning based single image super resolution (SISR) task is well investigated in 2D images. However, SISR for 3D Magnetics Resonance Images (MRI) is more challenging compared to 2D, mainly due to the increased number of neural network parameters, the larger memory requirement and the limited amount of available training data. Current SISR methods for 3D volumetric images are based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), especially Wasserstein GANs due to their training stability. Other common architectures in the 2D domain, e.g. transformer models, require large amounts of training data and…
To improve the purity of coal and prevent damage to the coal mining machine, it is necessary to identify coal and rock in underground coal mines. At the same time, the mined coal needs to be purified to remove rock and gangue. These two procedures are manually operated by workers in most coal mines. The realization of automatic identification and purification is not only conducive to the automation of coal mines, but also ensures the safety of workers. We discuss the possibility of using image-based methods to distinguish them. In order to find a solution that can be used in both scenarios, a …
Recent attempts at Super-Resolution for medical images used deep learning techniques such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to achieve perceptually realistic single image Super-Resolution. Yet, they are constrained by their inability to generalise to different scale factors. This involves high storage and energy costs as every integer scale factor involves a separate neural network. A recent paper has proposed a novel meta-learning technique that uses a Weight Prediction Network to enable Super-Resolution on arbitrary scale factors using only a single neural network. In this paper, we …

The most recent fast and accurate image segmentation methods are built upon fully convolutional deep neural networks. In this paper, we propose new deep learning strategies for DenseNets to improve segmenting images with subtle differences in intensity values and features. We aim to segment brain tissue on infant brain MRI at about 6 months of age where white matter and gray matter of the developing brain show similar T1 and T2 relaxation times, thus appear to have similar intensity values on both T1- and T2-weighted MRI scans. Brain tissue segmentation at this age is, therefore, very challeng…
Cross-modality image estimation involves the generation of images of one medical imaging modality from that of another modality. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been shown to be useful in identifying, characterising and extracting image patterns. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) use CNNs as generators and estimated images are discriminated as true or false based on an additional network. CNNs and GANs within the image estimation framework may be considered more generally as deep learning approaches, since imaging data tends to be large, leading to a larger number of network wei…

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a vital component of medical imaging. When compared to other image modalities, it has advantages such as the absence of radiation, superior soft tissue contrast, and complementary multiple sequence information. However, one drawback of MRI is its comparatively slow scanning and reconstruction compared to other image modalities, limiting its usage in some clinical applications when imaging time is critical. Traditional compressive sensing based MRI (CS-MRI) reconstruction can speed up MRI acquisition, but suffers from a long iterative process and noise-induce…

Translational brain research using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is becoming increasingly popular as animal models are an essential part of scientific studies and more ultra-high-field scanners are becoming available. Some disadvantages of MRI are the availability of MRI scanners and the time required for a full scanning session (it usually takes over 30 minutes). Privacy laws and the 3Rs ethics rule also make it difficult to create large datasets for training deep learning models. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) can perform data augmentation with higher quality than other techniques…

As acquisition time is inversely proportional to sample count, forming an image from reduced k-space samples resul…

To mitigate this, in this work, we propose a novel dual-cycle constrained bijective VAE-GAN approach to carry out tagged-to-cine MR image synthesis.
