We present an analysis of \emph{VI} CCD time-series photometry of the Oo II type globular cluster M92. The variable star population of the cluster is studied with the aim of revising their classifications, identifications, frequency spectra and to select indicators of the parental cluster metallicity and distance. The Fourier decomposition of RR Lyrae light curves lead to the estimation of mean [Fe/H]$_{\rm spec}=-2.20\pm 0.18$, and distance of $8.3\pm0.2$ kpc. Four new variables are reported; one RRd (V40), a multimode SX Phe (V41), a SR (V42) and one RRc (F1) that is most likely not a cluster member. The AC nature of V7 is confirmed. The double mode nature of the RRc star V11 is not confirmed and its amplitude modulations are most likely due to the Blazhko effect. Two modes are found in the known RRc variable V13. It is argued that the variable V30, previously classified as RRab is, in fact, an BL Her-type star not belonging to the cluster. Making use of the $Gaia$-DR2 proper motions, we identified 5012 stars in the field of the cluster, that are very likely cluster members, and for which we possess photometry, enabling the production of a refined Colour-Magnitude Diagram. This also allowed us to identify a few variable stars that do not belong to the cluster. The RR Lyrae pulsation modes on the HB are cleanly separated by the first overtone red edge, a common feature in all Oo II type clusters.
In this paper we present photometric CCD observations of the globular cluster NGC 6093 (M80) in filters B, V , R and I. We produce the colour-magnitude diagrams for this object and obtain values for its metallicity [Fe/H], reddening E(V-B), E(V-I) and distance modulus (m - M)_0.
We describe and summarize the findings from our CCD time-series photometry of globular clusters (GCs) program and the use of difference image analysis (DIA) in the extraction of very precise light curves even in the crowded central regions down to $V\sim 19$ mag. We have discovered approximately 250 variable stars in a sample of 23 selected GCs and have, therefore, updated the census of variables in each system and in some cases we have actually completed it down to a certain magnitude. The absolute magnitude and [Fe/H] for each individual RR Lyrae is obtained via the Fourier decomposition of …
We present results of a search for variable stars in a region of the globular cluster NGC 4147 based on photometric observations with 4k x 4k CCD imager mounted at the axial port of the recently installed 3.6 m Devasthal optical telescope at Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences, Nainital, India. We performed time series photometry of NGC 4147 in V and R bands, and identified 42 periodic variables in the region of NGC 4147, 28 of which have been detected for the first time. Seventeen variable stars are located within the half light radius $\lesssim$ 0.48 arcmin, of which 10 s…
We present the results from 10 nights of observations of the globular cluster NGC 6981 (M72) in the V, R and I Johnson wavebands. We employed the technique of difference image analysis to perform precision differential photometry on the time-series images, which enabled us to carry out a census of the under-studied variable star population of the cluster. We show that 20 suspected variables in the literature are actually non-variable, and we confirm the variable nature of another 29 variables while refining their ephemerides. We also detect 11 new RR Lyrae variables and 3 new SX Phe variables,…
We derive a strong bound on the axion-photon coupling $g_{aγ}$ from the analysis of a sample of 39 Galactic Globular Clusters. As recognized long ago, the R parameter, i.e. the number ratio of stars in horizontal over red giant branch of old stellar clusters, would be reduced by the axion production from photon conversions occurring in stellar cores. In this regard we have compared the measured R with state-of-the-art stellar models obtained under different assumptions for $g_{aγ}$. We show that the estimated value of $g_{aγ}$ substantially depends on the adopted He mass fraction Y, an effect …
Two previously unknown variable stars in the crowded central region of the globular cluster NGC 6981 are presented. The observations were made using the Electron Multiplying CCD (EMCCD) camera at the Danish 1.54m Telescope at La Silla, Chile. The two variables were not previously detected by conventional CCD imaging because of their proximity to a bright star. This discovery demonstrates that EMCCDs are a powerful tool for performing high-precision time-series photometry in crowded fields and near bright stars, especially when combined with difference image analysis (DIA).
We have calculated the physical parameters of the RR Lyrae stars in the globular cluster NGC~4147 via the Fourier decomposition of their light curves, using new data and well-established semi-empirical calibrations and zero points. The mean metallicity and distance estimated using the RRc stars are [Fe/H]$_{ZW}=-1.72\pm0.15$ and $19.05\pm0.46$ kpc respectively. The star V18, whose variability has been previously in dispute, is confirmed to be a variable of the SR type with a period of about 24.8d, and it has been used to get and independent distance estimate of the cluster. It is observed that…
We report the results of CCD $V$, $r$ and $I$ time-series photometry of the globular cluster NGC 5053. New times of maximum light are given for the eight known RR Lyrae stars in the field of our images and their periods are revised. Their $V$ light curves were Fourier decomposed to estimate their physical parameters. A discussion on the accuracy of the Fourier-based iron abundances, temperatures, masses and radii is given. New periods are found for the 5 known SX Phe stars and a critical discussion of their secular period changes is offered. The mean iron abundance for the RR Lyrae stars is fo…
We report CCD $V$ and $I$ time-series photometry of the globular cluster NGC 6333 (M9). The technique of difference image analysis has been used, which enables photometric precision better than 0.05 mag for stars brighter than $V \sim 19.0$ mag, even in the crowded central regions of the cluster. The high photometric precision has resulted in the discovery of two new RRc stars, three eclipsing binaries, seven long-term variables and one field RRab star behind the cluster. A detailed identification chart and equatorial coordinates are given for all the variable stars in the field of our images …
For nearby K dwarfs, the broadening of the observed Main Sequence at low metallicities is much narrower than expected from isochrones with the standard helium-to-metal enrichment ratio DY/DZ=2. Though the latter value fits well the Main Sequence around solar metallicity, and agrees with independent measurements from HII regions as well as with theoretical stellar yields and chemical evolution models, a much higher DY/DZ~10 is necessary to reproduce the broadening observed for nearby subdwarfs. This result resembles, on a milder scale, the very high DY/DZ estimated from the multiple Main Sequen…
Obtain time-series photometry of the very crowded central regions of Galactic globular clusters with better angular resolution than previously achieved with conventional CCDs on ground-based telescopes to complete, or improve, the census of the variable star population in those stellar systems. Images were taken using the Danish 1.54-m Telescope at the ESO observatory at La Silla in Chile. The telescope was equipped with an electron-multiplying CCD and the short-exposure-time images obtained (10 images per second) were stacked using the shift-and-add technique to produce the normal-exposure-ti…
We show the benefits of using Electron-Multiplying CCDs and the shift-and-add technique as a tool to minimise the effects of the atmospheric turbulence such as blending between stars in crowded fields and to avoid saturated stars in the fields observed. We intend to complete, or improve, the census of the variable star population in globular cluster NGC~6715. Our aim is to obtain high-precision time-series photometry of the very crowded central region of this stellar system via the collection of better angular resolution images than has been previously achieved with conventional CCDs on ground…
We report an analysis of new $V$ and $I$ CCD time-series photometry of the globular cluster NGC 6934. Through the Fourier decomposition of the RR Lyrae light curves, the mean values of [Fe/H] and the distance of the cluster were estimated, we found; [Fe/H]$_{UVES}$=-1.48$\pm$0.14 and $d$=16.03$\pm$0.42 kpc, and [Fe/H]$_{UVES}$=-1.43$\pm$0.11 and $d$=15.91$\pm$0.39 kpc, from the calibrations of RRab and RRc stars respectively. Independent distance estimations from SX Phe and SR stars are also discussed. Individual absolute magnitudes, radii and masses are also reported for RR Lyrae stars. We fo…
We report the discovery of two new variable stars in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 288, found by means of time-series CCD photometry. We classified the new variables as SX Phoenicis due to their characteristic fundamental mode periods (1.02 +- 0.01 and 0.69 +- 0.01 hours), and refine the period estimates for other six known variables. SX Phe stars are known to follow a well-defined Period-Luminosity (P-L) relation and, thus, can be used for determining distances; they are more numerous than RR Lyraes in NGC~288. We obtain the P-L relation for the fundamental mode M_V = (-2.59 +- 0.18) lo…
With a high value of heliocentric radial velocity, a retrograde orbit, and being suspected to have an extragalactic origin, NGC 3201 is an interesting globular cluster for kinematical studies. Our purpose is to calculate the relative proper motions (PMs) and membership probability for the stars in the wide region of globular cluster NGC 3201. Proper motion based membership probabilities are used to isolate the cluster sample from the field stars. The membership catalogue will help address the question of chemical inhomogeneity in the cluster. Archive CCD data taken with a wide-field imager (WF…
We present B, V and I CCD light curves for 101 variable stars belonging to the globular cluster NGC2419, 60 of which are new discoveries, based on datasets obtained at the TNG, SUBARU and HST telescopes. The sample includes 75 RR Lyrae stars (of which 38 RRab, 36 RRc and one RRd), one Population II Cepheid, 12 SX Phoenicis variables, 2 DeltaScuti stars, 3 binary systems, 5 long-period variables, and 3 variables of uncertain classification. The pulsation properties of the RR Lyrae variables are close to those of Oosterhoff type II clusters, consistent with the low metal abundance and the cluste…
We analyse 20 nights of CCD observations in the V and I bands of the globular cluster M68 (NGC 4590), using these to detect variable objects. We also obtained electron-multiplying CCD (EMCCD) observations for this cluster in order to explore its core with unprecedented spatial resolution from the ground. We reduced our data using difference image analysis, in order to achieve the best possible photometry in the crowded field of the cluster. In doing so, we showed that when dealing with identical networked telescopes, a reference image from any telescope may be used to reduce data from any othe…
We report discovery of a luminous F-type post-asymptotic-giant-branch (PAGB) star in the Galactic globular cluster (GC) M79 (NGC 1904). At visual apparent and absolute magnitudes of V=12.20 and Mv=-3.46, this "yellow" PAGB star is by a small margin the visually brightest star known in any GC. It was identified using CCD observations in the uBVI photometric system, which is optimized to detect stars with large Balmer discontinuities, indicative of very low surface gravities. Follow-up observations with the SMARTS 1.3- and 1.5-m telescopes show that the star is not variable in light or radial ve…
We present the results of a search for variable stars in a 26x39 arcmin^2 field around globular cluster M79 (NGC1904). The search was made by means of an extended version of image subtraction, which allows to analyze in a uniform manner CCD frames obtained with different telescopes and cameras of different sizes and resolutions. The search resulted in finding 20 new variable stars, among which 13 are cluster members. The members include one new RR Lyr star of subtype c, three SX Phe stars, and nine variable red giants. We also show that V7 is a W Vir star with a period of 13.985 d. Revised mea…
We present new CCD $VI$ photometry of the distant globular cluster Pal 13. Fourier decomposition of the light curves of the three cluster member RRab stars lead to estimations of [Fe/H]=-1.65, and a distance of 23.67$\pm$0.57 kpc. Light and colour near minimum phases for RRab stars leads to an estimate of $E(B-V)$=0.104 $\pm$ 0.001. A $V/(V-I)$ colour-magnitude diagram, built exclusively with likely star members, shows consistency with the above parameters and an age of 12 Gyrs. A search of variable stars in the field of view of our images revealed the variability of a red giant cluster member…
We present new time-series CCD photometry, in the B and V bands, for the moderately metal-rich ([Fe/H] ~ -1.3) Galactic globular cluster (GC) M62 (NGC 6266). The present dataset is the largest obtained so far for this cluster, and consists of 168 images per filter, obtained with the Warsaw 1.3m telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory (LCO) and the 1.3m telescope of the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), in two separate runs over the time span of three months. The procedure adopted to detect the variable stars was the optimal image subtraction method (ISIS v2.2), as implemented b…
We have derived the absolute proper motion (PM) of the globular cluster M55 using a large set of CCD images collected with the du Pont telescope between 1997 and 2008. We find (PM_RA*cos(DEC), PM_DEC) = (-3.31 +/- 0.10, -9.14 +/- 0.15) mas/yr relative to background galaxies. Membership status was determined for 16 945 stars with 14<V<21 from the central part of the cluster. The PM catalogue includes 52 variables of which 43 are probable members of M55. This sample is dominated by pulsating blue straggler stars but also includes 5 eclipsing binaries, three of which are main sequence objects. Th…
We report an analysis of new $V$ and $I$ CCD time-series photometry of the distant globular cluster NGC 6229. The principal aims were to explore the field of the cluster in search of new variables, and to Fourier decompose the RR Lyrae light curves in pursuit of physical parameters. We found 25 new variables: 10 RRab, 5 RRc, 6 SR, 1 CW, 1 SX Phe, and two that we were unable to classify. Secular period changes were detected and measured in some favourable cases. The classifications of some of the known variables were rectified. The Fourier decomposition of RRab and RRc light curves was used to i…
We present the results from $VI$ CCD time-series photometry of the globular cluster M13 (NGC 6205). From the Fourier decomposition of the light curves of RRab and RRc stars we found an average metallicity of [Fe/H]zw = -1.58 $\pm$ 0.09. The distance to the cluster was estimated as 7.1 $\pm$ 0.1 kpc from independent methods related to the variable star families RR Lyrae, SX Phe and W Virginis, from the luminosity of the theoretical ZAHB and from the orbit solution of a newly discovered contact binary star. The RR Lyrae pulsation modes are segregated by the red edge of the first overtone instabi…
Time-series \emph{VI} CCD photometry of the globular cluster NGC 1261 is employed to study its variable star population. A membership analysis of most variables based on Gaia~DR2 proper motions and colours, was performed prior to the estimation of the mean cluster distance and metallicity. For the member RR Lyrae, their light curves were Fourier decomposed to calculate their individual values of distance, [Fe/H], radius and mass. The $I$-band P-L for RR Lyrae stars was also employed. Our best estimates of the metallicity and distance of this Oo I cluster are [Fe/H]$_{\rm ZW}$=$-1.42 \pm 0.05$ …
NGC 2808 is a unique globular cluster with not only a bimodal-horizontal branch (HB) but also with gaps on the blue horizontal branch. Adequate interpretation of the nature of the detected peculiarities in "bimodal" and "gap" clusters is of paramount importance for understanding the nature of the second parameter phenomenon and scenarios for the formation of the Galaxy. Although RR Lyrae variables are HB stars that can provide powerful constraints to models on the origin of bimodal HBs, unfortunately, until recently, only one RR Lyrae variable was known in this cluster. Here we present the fir…
We have performed a photometric V, R, I CCD time-series analysis with a baseline of ~8 years of the outer-halo globular cluster NGC 7492 with the aim of searching for new variables and using these (and the previously known variables) to determine the physical parameters of interest for the cluster (e.g. metallicity, absolute magnitude of the horizontal branch, distance, etc.). We use difference image analysis (DIA) to extract precise light curves in the relatively crowded star field, especially towards the densely populated central region. Several approaches are used for variability detection …
NGC 6809 is a luminous metal-poor halo globular cluster that is relatively easy to study due to its proximity and low concentration. Because of its high Galactic latitude (b = -23deg), interstellar reddening and contamination is not very high. We aim to determine the relative proper motion and membership probability of the stars in the wide area of globular cluster NGC 6809. To target cluster members reliably during spectroscopic surveys and both spatial and radial distributions in the cluster outskirts without including field stars, a good proper motion and membership probability catalogue of…
In this paper, we present the analysis of time-series observations from 2013 and 2014 of five metal rich ([Fe/H] $>$ -1) globular clusters: NGC~6388, NGC~6441, NGC~6528, NGC~6638, and NGC~6652. The data have been used to perform a census of the variable stars in the central parts of these clusters. The observations were made with the electron multiplying CCD (EMCCD) camera at the Danish 1.54m Telescope at La Silla, Chile, and they were analysed using difference image analysis (DIA) to obtain high-precision light curves of the variable stars. It was possible to identify and classify all of the …
We present a new time-series VI CCD photometry of the globular cluster NGC 6397, from which we obtained and analysed the light curves of 35 variables carefully identified in the cluster field. We assessed the membership of the variables with an astrometric analysis based on \emph{Gaia} DR2 data. The cluster colour-magnitude diagram was differentially dereddened and cleaned of non members, which allowed us to fit isochrones for [Fe/H]$ = -2.0$ dex in the range 13.0--13.5 Gyr, for a mean reddening $E(B-V)=0.19$, and a distance of 2.5 kpc. This distance was confirmed using the period-luminosity r…

A detailed chemical composition analysis based on a high-resolution (R=35,000) CCD spectrum is presented for a newly discovered post-AGB star in the globular cluster M79 for the first time. The elemental abundance results of M79 Post-AGB star are found to be [C/Fe]=-0.7, [O/Fe]=+1.4, [alpha- process/Fe]=0.5, and [s-process/Fe]=-0.1. The surprising result is that the iron abundance of the star is apparently about 0.6 dex less than that of the cluster's red giants as reported by published studies including a recent high-resolution spectroscopic analysis by Carretta and colleagues.
We report CCD V and I time series photometry of the globular cluster NGC 5024 (M53). The technique of difference image analysis has been used which enables photometric precisions better than 10 mmag for stars brighter than V 18.5mag even in the crowded central regions of the cluster. The high photometric precision has resulted in the discovery of two new RR1 stars and thirteen SX Phe stars. A detailed identification chart is given for all the variable stars in the field of our images of the cluster. Periodicities were calculated for all RR Lyraes and SX Phe stars and a critical comparison is m…
Time-series VI CCD photometry of the globular cluster M10 (NGC 6254) is employed to perform a detailed identification, inspection of their light curves, their classification and their cluster membership, of all the known variables reported up to 2018. The membership analysis is based on the Gaia-DR2 positions and proper motions. The metallicity of the cluster is estimated based on the sole RRc star known in the cluster. The Fourier decomposition of its light curve leads to [Fe/H]ZW=-1:59 $\pm$ 0:23 dex. The mean cluster distance, estimated by several independent methods is 5.0 $\pm$ 0.3 kpc. A…
In 1972, Zinn, Newell, & Gibson (ZNG) published a list of 156 candidate "UV-bright" stars they had found in 27 Galactic globular clusters (GCs), based on photographs in the U and V bands. UV-bright stars lie above the horizontal branch (HB) and blueward of the asymptotic-giant branch (AGB) and red-giant branch in the clusters' color-magnitude diagrams. They are in rapid evolutionary phases--if they are members and not unrelated bright foreground stars. The ZNG list has inspired numerous follow-up studies, aimed at understanding late stages of stellar evolution. However, the ZNG candidates were…
A search for variable stars in the globular cluster NGC 288 was carried out using a time-series of CCD images in the $V$ and $I$ filters. The photometry of all stellar sources in the field of view of our images, down to $V\approx19$ mag, was performed using difference image analysis (DIA). For stars of $\approx15$ mag, measurement accuracies of $\approx8$ mmag and $\approx10$ mmag were achieved for $V$ and $I$ respectively. Three independent search strategies were applied to the 5525 light curves but no new variables were found above the threshold limits characteristic of our data set. The use…
$ω$ Cen is a rare example of a globular cluster where the iron abundance of the stars spans more than one order of magnitude. Many spectroscopic investigations of its red-giant- and sub-giant- branches have revealed multiple peaks in the iron abundance distribution. The metallicity distribution of main-sequence (MS) stars is not well characterized yet, due to the faintness of the stars and lack of data. So far, almost all studies of MS stars are based on photometric measurements. Our goal is to investigate the metallicity distribution of a statistically significant sample of MS stars in $ω$ Ce…
We present new number density and surface brightness profiles for the globular cluster M92 (NGC 6341). These profiles are calculated from optical images collected with the CCD mosaic camera MegaCam at the Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope and with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. The ground-based data were supplemented with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey photometric catalog. Special care was taken to discriminate candidate cluster stars from field stars and to subtract the background contamination from both profiles. By examining the contour levels of the number densit…

A five year CCD photometric \emph{VI} time-series of NGC 7006 is employed to perform a detailed analysis of the known population of variable stars. In the process we have corrected inconsistent classifications, sky coordinates and found ten new cluster member variables. An independent reddening estimate with a value $E(B-V)=0.08\pm0.05$ is made. Using Fourier decompositions of RR Lyrae light curves and well established calibrations, the cluster mean metallicity and distance [Fe/H]$_{\rm ZW}= -1.53\pm0.15$ and $41.2\pm1.4$ kpc are estimated based on an extended sample of cluster member RRab sta…
White dwarfs are the fossils left by the evolution of low-and intermediate-mass stars, and have very long evolutionary timescales. This allows us to use them to explore the properties of old populations, like the Galactic halo. We present a population synthesis study of the luminosity function of halo white dwarfs, aimed at investigating which information can be derived from the currently available observed data. We employ an up-to-date population synthesis code based on Monte Carlo techniques, that incorporates the most recent and reliable cooling sequences for metal poor progenitors as well …
New accurate and homogeneous optical UBVRI photometry has been obtained for variable stars in the Galactic globular $ω$ Cen (NGC 5139). We secured 8202 CCD images covering a time interval of 24 years and a sky area of 84x48 arcmin. The current data were complemented with data available in the literature and provided new, homogeneous pulsation parameters (mean magnitudes, luminosity amplitudes, periods) for 187 candidate $ω$ Cen RR Lyrae (RRLs). Among them we have 101 RRc (first overtone), 85 RRab (fundamental) and a single candidate RRd (double-mode) variables. Candidate Blazhko RRLs show perio…
We present an analysis of $\emph{VI}$ CCD time series photometry of globular cluster NGC 6712. Our main goal is to study the variable star population as indicators of the cluster mean physical parameters. We employed the Fourier decomposition of RR Lyrae light curves to confirm that $[\rm Fe/H]_{UVES} = -1.0 \pm 0.05$ is a solid estimate. We estimated the reddening to the cluster as $E(B-V)$ = 0.35 $\pm$ 0.04 from the RRab stars colour curves. The distance to the cluster was estimated using three independent methods which yielded a weighted mean distance $\big < d \big>$ = 8.1 $\pm$ 0.2 kpc. T…
Triple-star systems exhibit a phenomenon known as the Triple Evolution Dynamical Instability (TEDI), in which mass loss in evolving triples triggers short-term dynamical instabilities, potentially leading to collisions of stars, exchanges, and ejections. Previous work has shown that the TEDI is an important pathway to head-on stellar collisions in the Galaxy, significantly exceeding the rate of collisions due to random encounters in globular clusters. Here, we revisit the TEDI evolutionary pathway using state-of-the-art population synthesis methods that self-consistently take into account stel…
We use deep multi-epoch PSF photometry taken with the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) to measure and analyze the proper motions of stars within the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae (47 Tuc, NGC 104). The observations are part of the ongoing near-infrared VISTA survey of the Magellanic Cloud system (VMC). The data analyzed here corresponds to one VMC tile and covers a total sky area of 1.77 deg^2. Absolute proper motions with respect to ~9070 background galaxies are calculated from a linear regression model applied to the stellar positions in 11 epochs in the Ks …
