Let $\mathcal K=\langle\mathcal R, δ\rangle$ be a closed ordered differential field, in the sense of M. Singer, and $C$ its field of constants. In this note, we prove that, for sets definable in the pair $\mathcal M=\langle \mathcal R, C\rangle$, the $δ$-dimension and the large dimension coincide. As an application, we characterize the definable sets in $\mathcal K$ that are internal to $C$ as those sets that are definable in $\mathcal M$ and have $δ$-dimension $0$. We further show that, for sets definable in $\mathcal K$, having $δ$-dimension $0$ does not generally imply co-analyzability in $C$ (in contrast to the case of transseries). We also point out that the coincidence of dimensions also holds in the context of differentially closed fields and in the context of transseries.
We show that the well-partial orderedness of the finite downwards closed subsets of $\mathbb{N}^k$ ,ordered by inclusion, is equivalent to the well-foundedness of the ordinal $ω^{ω^ω}$. This was conjectured to be the case by Hatzikiriakou and Simpson. Since we use Friedman's adjacent Ramsey theorem for fixed dimensions in the upper bound, we also give a treatment of the reverse mathematical status of that theorem.
The following strong form of density of definable types is introduced for theories T admitting a fibered dimension function d: given a model M of T and a definable subset X of M^n, there is a definable type p in X, definable over a code for X and of the same d-dimension as X. Both o-minimal theories and the theory of closed ordered differential fields (CODF) are shown to have this property. As an application, we derive a new proof of elimination of imaginaries for CODF.
A residuated lattice is defined to be integrally closed if it satisfies the equations x\x = e and x/x = e. Every integral, cancellative, or divisible residuated lattice is integrally closed, and, conversely, every bounded integrally closed residuated lattice is integral. It is proved that the mapping a -> (a\e)\e on any integrally closed residuated lattice is a homomorphism onto a lattice-ordered group. A Glivenko-style property is then established for varieties of integrally closed residuated lattices with respect to varieties of lattice-ordered groups, showing in particular that integrally c…
We characterize and construct linearly ordered sets, abelian groups and fields that are {\emph symmetrically complete}, meaning that the intersection over any chain of closed bounded intervals is nonempty. Such ordered abelian groups and fields are important because generalizations of Banach's Fixed Point Theorem hold in them. We prove that symmetrically complete ordered abelian groups and fields are divisible Hahn products and real closed power series fields, respectively. We show how to extend any given ordered set, abelian group or field to one that is symmetrically complete. A main part of…
In this paper, we show that VC-minimal ordered fields are real closed. We introduce a notion, strictly between convexly orderable and dp-minimal, that we call dp-small, and show that this is enough to characterize many algebraic theories. For example, dp-small ordered groups are abelian divisible and dp-small ordered fields are real closed.
The following conjecture is due to Shelah-Hasson: Any infinite strongly NIP field is either real closed, algebraically closed, or admits a non-trivial definable henselian valuation, in the language of rings. We specialise this conjecture to ordered fields in the language of ordered rings, which leads towards a systematic study of the class of strongly NIP almost real closed fields. As a result, we obtain a complete characterisation of this class.
Let $T$ be an o-minimal theory extending the theory of real closed ordered fields. An $H_T$-field is a model $K$ of $T$ equipped with a $T$-derivation such that the underlying ordered differential field of $K$ is an $H$-field. We study $H_T$-fields and their extensions. Our main result is that if $T$ is power bounded, then every $H_T$-field $K$ has either exactly one or exactly two minimal Liouville closed $H_T$-field extensions up to $K$-isomorphism. The assumption of power boundedness can be relaxed to allow for certain exponential cases, such as $T = \operatorname{Th}(\mathbb{R}_{\operatorn…
We show that dp-minimal valued fields are henselian and that a dp-minimal field admitting a definable type V topology is either real closed, algebraically closed or admits a non-trivial definable henselian valuation. We give classifications of dp-minimal ordered abelian groups and dp-minimal ordered fields without additional structure.
We investigate what henselian valuations on ordered fields are definable in the language of ordered rings. This leads towards a systematic study of the class of ordered fields which are dense in their real closure. Some results have connections to recent conjectures on definability of henselian valuations in strongly NIP fields. Moreover, we obtain a complete characterisation of strongly NIP almost real closed fields.
We give a detailed proof of Kolchin's results on differential Galois groups of strongly normal extensions, in the case where the field of constants is not necessarily algebraically closed. We closely follow former works due to Pillay and his co-authors which were written under the assumption that the field of constant is algebraically closed. In the present setting, which encompasses the cases of ordered or p-valued differential fields, we find a partial Galois correspondence and we show one cannot expect more in general. In the class of ordered differential fields, using elimination of imagin…
Suppose that $Ω$ is a complex lattice that is closed under complex conjugation and that $I$ is a small real interval, and that $D$ is a disc in $ \mathbb{C}$. Then the restriction $\wp|_D$ is definable in the structure $(\bar{\mathbb{R}},\wp|_I)$ if and only if the lattice $Ω$ has complex multiplication. This characterises lattices with complex multiplication in terms of definability.
As mathematical induction is applied to prove statements on natural numbers, {\it continuous induction} (or, {\it real induction}) is a tool to prove some statements in real analysis.(Although, this comparison is somehow an overstatement.) Here, we first consider it on densely ordered abelian groups to prove Heine-Borel theorem (every closed and bounded interval is compact with respect to order topology) in those structures. Then, using the recently introduced notion of pseudo finite sets, we introduce a first order definable version of {\it continuous induction} in the language of ordered gro…
Over the last century, the principle of "induction on the continuum" has been studied by different authors in different formats. All of these different readings are equivalent to one of the three versions that we isolate in this paper. We also formalize those three forms (of "continuous induction") in first-order logic and prove that two of them are equivalent and sufficiently strong to completely axiomatize the first-order theory of the real closed (ordered) fields. We show that the third weaker form of continuous induction is equivalent with the Archimedean property. We study some equivalent…
Liouville closed $H$-fields are ordered differential fields whose ordering and derivation interact in a natural way and where every linear differential equation of order $1$ has a nontrivial solution. (The introduction gives a precise definition.) For a Liouville closed $H$-field $K$ with small derivation we show: $K$ has the Intermediate Value Property for differential polynomials iff $K$ is elementarily equivalent to the ordered differential field of transseries. We also indicate how this applies to Hardy fields.
In the course of many mathematical developments involving 'number systems' like $\mathbb{N}, \mathbb{Z}, \mathbb{Q}, \mathbb{R}, \mathbb {C}$ etc., it sometimes becomes necessary to abstract away and study certain properties of the number system in question so that we may better understand objects having these properties in a more general setting -- a relevant example for this paper would be Hausdorffs $η_\varepsilon$-fields, objects abstracted from the property that there are no two disjoint intervals in $\mathbb{R}$ of cardinality $α\leq \aleph_0$ whose union is $\mathbb{R}$. My goal will be…
Let $M$ be a $C$-minimal structure and $T$ its canonical tree (which corresponds in an ultrametric space to the set of closed balls with radius different than $\infty$ ordered by inclusion). We present a description of definable locally constant functions $f:M\rightarrow T$ in $C$-minimal structures having a canonical tree with infinitely many branches at each node and densely ordered branches. This provides both a description of definable subsets of $T$ in one variable and analogues of known results in algebraically closed valued fields.
We consider the ordered field which is the completion of the Puiseux series field over \bR equipped with a ring of analytic functions on [-1,1]^n which contains the standard subanalytic functions as well as functions given by t-adically convergent power series, thus combining the analytic structures from [DD] and [LR3]. We prove quantifier elimination and o-minimality in the corresponding language. We extend these constructions and results to rank n ordered fields \bR_n (the maximal completions of iterated Puiseux series fields). We generalize the example of Hrushovski and Peterzil [HP] of a s…
In [15], the algebraico-tree-theoretic simplicity hierarchical structure of J. H. Conway's ordered field No of surreal numbers was brought to the fore and employed to provide necessary and sufficient conditions for an ordered field to be isomorphic to an initial subfield of No, i.e. a subfield of No that is an initial subtree of No. In this sequel to [15], analogous results for ordered abelian groups and ordered domains are established which in turn are employed to characterize the convex subgroups and convex subdomains of initial subfields of No that are themselves initial. It is further show…
Every discrete definable subset of a closed asymptotic couple with ordered scalar field $\boldsymbol k$ is shown to be contained in a finite-dimensional $\boldsymbol k$-linear subspace of that couple. It follows that the differential-valued field $\mathbb T$ of transseries induces more structure on its value group than what is definable in its asymptotic couple equipped with its scalar multiplication by real numbers, where this asymptotic couple is construed as a two-sorted structure with $\mathbb R$ as the underlying set for the second sort.
We analyze definably compact groups in o-minimal expansions of ordered groups as a combination of semi-linear groups and groups definable in o-minimal expansions of real closed fields. The analysis involves structure theorems about their locally definable covers. As a corollary, we prove the Compact Domination Conjecture in o-minimal expansions of ordered groups.
We give a valuation theoretic characterization for a real closed field to be recursively saturated. Our result extends the characterization of Harnik and Ressayre \cite{hr} for a divisible ordered abelian group to be recursively saturated.
Let $\mathcal{R}$ be an $\mathrm{NIP}$ expansion of $(\mathbb{R},<,+)$ by closed subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ and continuous functions $f : \mathbb{R}^m \to \mathbb{R}^n$. Then $\mathcal{R}$ is generically locally o-minimal. It follows that if $X \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ is definable in $\mathcal{R}$ then the $C^k$-points of $X$ are dense in $X$ for any $k \geq 0$. This follows from a more general theorem on $\mathrm{NIP}$ expansions of locally compact groups, which itself follows from a result on quotients of definable sets by equivalence relations which are externally definable and $\bigwedge$-d…
We adapt the construction of the field of logarithmic-exponential transseries of van den Dries, Macintyre, and Marker to build an ordered differential field of sublogarithmic-transexponential series. We use this structure to build a transexponential Hardy field closed under composition. Specifically, we prove that the germs at $+\infty$ of $\mathcal{L}_{\mathrm{transexp}}$-terms in a single variable are ordered, where $\mathcal{L}_{\mathrm{transexp}}$ is a language containing $\mathcal{L}_{\mathrm{an}}(\exp,\log)$ with new symbols for a transexponential function, its derivatives, and their com…
We revisit Kolchin's results on definability of differential Galois groups of strongly normal extensions, in the case where the field of constants is not necessarily algebraically closed. In certain classes of differential topological fields, which encompasses ordered or p-valued differential fields, we find a partial Galois correspondence and we show one cannot expect more in general. In the class of ordered differential fields, using elimination of imaginaries in CODF, we establish a relative Galois correspondence for relatively definable subgroups of the group of differential order automorp…
We give a sufficient condition for an algebraic structure to have a computable presentation with a computable basis and a computable presentation with no computable basis. We apply the condition to differentially closed, real closed, and difference closed fields with the relevant notions of independence. To cover these classes of structures we introduce a new technique of safe extensions that was not necessary for the previously known results of this kind. We will then apply our techniques to derive new corollaries on the number of computable presentations of these structures. The condition al…
In this paper we develop general techniques for classes of computable real numbers generated by subsets of total computable (recursive functions) with special restrictions on basic operations in order to investigate the following problems: whether a generated class is a real closed field and whether there exists a computable presentation of a generated class. We prove a series of theorems that lead to the result that there are no computable presentations neither for polynomial time computable no even for $E_n$-computable real numbers, where $E_n$ is a level in Grzegorczyk hierarchy, $n \geq 2$…
Assuming that the differential field $(K,δ)$ is differentially large, in the sense of León Sánchez and Tressl, and "bounded" as a field, we prove that for any linear differential algebraic group $G$ over $K$, the differential Galois (or constrained) cohomology set $H^1_δ(K,G)$ is finite. This applies, among other things, to closed ordered differential fields $K$, in the sense of Singer, and to closed $p$-adic differential fields in the sense of Tressl. As an application, we prove a general existence result for parameterized Picard-Vessiot extensions within certain families of fields; if $(K,δ_…
Recently it has been shown that all non-trivial closed permutation groups containing the automorphism group of the random poset are generated by two types of permutations: the first type are permutations turning the order upside down, and the second type are permutations induced by so-called rotations. In this paper we introduce rotations for finite posets, which can be seen as the poset counterpart of Seidel-switch for finite graphs. We analyze some of their combinatorial properties, and investigate in particular the question of when two finite posets are rotation-equivalent. We moreover give…
