In this paper we discuss various potentials related to the Riemann zeta function and the Riemann Xi function. These potentials are modified versions of Morse potentials and can also be related to modified forms of the radial harmonic oscillator and modified Coulomb potential. We use supersymmetric quantum mechanics to construct their ground state wave functions and the Fourier transform of the ground state to exhibit the Riemann zeros. This allows us to formulate the Riemann hypothesis in terms of the location of the nodes of the ground state wave function in momentum space. We also discuss the relation these potentials to one and two matrix integrals and construct a few orthogonal polynomials associated with the matrix models. We relate the Schrodinger equation in momentum space to and finite difference equation in momentum space with an infinite number of terms. We computed the uncertainty relations associated with these potentials and ground states as well as the Shannon Information entropy and compare with the unmodified Morse and harmonic oscillator potentials. Finally we discuss the extension of these methods to other functions defined by a Dirichlet series such as the the Ramanujan zeta function.
The analytic solutions of the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation for the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential reported in the literature rely upon the Jacobi polynomials with complex indices and complex arguments. We first draw attention to the fact that the complex Jacobi polynomials have non-trivial orthogonality properties which make them uncomfortable for physics applications. Instead we here solve above equation in terms of real orthogonal polynomials. The new solutions are used in the construction of the quantum-mechanic superpotential.
The objective of this note is to provide an interpretation of the discrete version of Morse inequalities, following Witten's approach via supersymmetric quantum mechanics, adapted to finite graphs, as a particular instance of Morse-Witten theory for cell complexes. We describe the general framework of graph quantum mechanics and we produce discrete versions of the Hodge theorems and energy cut-offs within this formulation.
We present the proof of the HRR theorem for a generic complex compact manifold by evaluating the functional integral for the Witten index of the appropriate supersymmetric quantum mechanical system.
The supersymmetric approach in the form of second order intertwining relations is used to prove the exact solvability of two-dimensional Schrodinger equation with generalized two-dimensional Morse potential for $a_0=-1/2$. This two-parametric model is not amenable to conventional separation of variables, but it is completely integrable: the symmetry operator of fourth order in momenta exists. All bound state energies are found explicitly, and all corresponding wave functions are built analytically. By means of shape invariance property, the result is extended to the hierarchy of Morse models w…
For any compact Lie group $G$ and closed, smooth Riemannian manifold $(X,g)$ of dimension $d\geq 2$, we extend a result due to Uhlenbeck (1985) that gives existence of a flat connection on a principal $G$-bundle over $X$ supporting a connection with $L^p$-small curvature, when $p>d/2$, to the case of a connection with $L^{d/2}$-small curvature. We prove an optimal Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality for abstract Morse-Bott functions on Banach manifolds, generalizing an earlier result due to the author and Maridakis in arXiv:1510.03817. We apply this result to prove the optimal Lojasiewicz-Si…
Ladder operators for the hyperbolic Rosen-Morse (RMII) potential are realized using the shape invariance property appearing, in particular, using supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The extension of the ladder operators to a specific class of rational extensions of the RMII potential is presented and discussed. Coherent states are then constructed as almost eigenstates of the lowering operators. Some properties are analyzed and compared. The ladder operators and coherent states constructions presented are extended to the case of the trigonometric Rosen-Morse (RMI) potential using a point canonic…
The confluent second-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics, in which the factorization energies tend to a common value, is used to generate Hamiltonians with known spectra departing from the hyperbolic Rosen-Morse and Eckart potentials. The possible spectral modifications, as to create a new level or to delete a given one, as well as the isospectral transformations, are discussed.
We consider classical and quantum one and two-dimensional systems with ladder operators that satisfy generalized Heisenberg algebras. In the classical case, this construction is related to the existence of closed trajectories. In particular, we apply these results to the infinite well and Morse potentials. We discuss how the degeneracies of the permutation symmetry of quantum two-dimensional systems can be explained using products of ladder operators. These products satisfy interesting commutation relations. The two-dimensional Morse quantum system is also related to a generalized two-dimensio…
The construction of rationally-extended Morse potentials is analyzed in the framework of first-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The known family of extended potentials $V_{A,B,{\rm ext}}(x)$, obtained from a conventional Morse potential $V_{A-1,B}(x)$ by the addition of a bound state below the spectrum of the latter, is re-obtained. More importantly, the existence of another family of extended potentials, strictly isospectral to $V_{A+1,B}(x)$, is pointed out for a well-chosen range of parameter values. Although not shape invariant, such extended potentials exhibit a kind of `enlarged' …
In this paper, a supersymmetric extension of a system of hydrodynamic type equations involving Riemann invariants is formulated in terms of a superspace and superfield formalism. The symmetry properties of both the classical and supersymmetric versions of this hydrodynamical model are analyzed through the use of group-theoretical methods applied to partial differential equations involving both bosonic and fermionic variables. More specifically, we compute the Lie superalgebras of both models and perform classifications of their respective subalgebras. A systematic use of the subalgebra structu…
The first and second-order supersymmetry transformations can be used to manipulate one or two energy levels of the initial spectrum when generating new exactly solvable Hamiltonians from a given initial potential. In this paper, we will construct the first and second-order supersymmetric partners of the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential. Firstly, it is identified a set of solutions of the initial stationary Schrödinger equation which are appropriate for implementing in a simple way non-singular transformations, without inducing new singularities in the built potential. Then, the way the spec…
In this paper, we formulate an N=2 supersymmetric extension of a hydrodynamic-type system involving Riemann invariants. The supersymmetric version is constructed by means of a superspace and superfield formalism, using bosonic superfields, and consists of a system of partial differential equations involving both bosonic and fermionic variables. We make use of group-theoretical methods in order to analyze the extended model algebraically. Specifically, we calculate a Lie superalgebra of symmetries of our supersymmetric model and make use of a general classification method to classify the one-di…
The existence of a novel enlarged shape invariance property valid for some rational extensions of shape-invariant conventional potentials, first pointed out in the case of the Morse potential, is confirmed by deriving all rational extensions of the Rosen-Morse II and Eckart potentials that can be obtained in first-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Such extensions are shown to belong to three different types, the first two strictly isospectral to some starting conventional potential with different parameters and the third with an extra bound state below the spectrum of the latter. In the …
Supersymmetric quantum mechanics is constructed in a new non-Hermitian representation. Firstly, the map between the partner operators $H^{(\pm)}$ is chosen antilinear. Secondly, both these components of a super-Hamiltonian ${\cal H}$ are defined along certain topologically nontrivial complex curves $r^{(\pm)}(x)$ which spread over several Riemann sheets of the wave function. The non-uniqueness of our choice of the map ${\cal T}$ between "tobogganic" partner curves $r^{(+)}(x)$ and $r^{(-)}(x)$ is emphasized.
The energy spectra and the corresponding two- component spinor wavefunctions of the Dirac equation for the Rosen-Morse potential with spin and pseudospin symmetry are obtained. The $s-$wave ($κ= 0$ state) solutions for this problem are obtained by using the basic concept of the supersymmetric quantum mechanics approach and function analysis (standard approach) in the calculations. Under the spin symmetry and pseudospin symmetry, the energy equation and the corresponding two-component spinor wavefunctions for this potential and other special types of this potential are obtained. Extension of th…
We present a compact formula for the supersymmetric partition function of 2d N=(2,2), 3d N=2 and 4d N=1 gauge theories on $Σ_g \times T^n$ with partial topological twist on $Σ_g$, where $Σ_g$ is a Riemann surface of arbitrary genus and $T^n$ is a torus with n=0,1,2, respectively. In 2d we also include certain local operator insertions, and in 3d we include Wilson line operator insertions along $S^1$. For genus g=1, the formula computes the Witten index. We present a few simple Abelian and non-Abelian examples, including new tests of non-perturbative dualities. We also show that the large N par…
We address some aspects of four dimensional chiral N=1 supersymmetric theories on which the scalar manifold is described by Kähler geometry and can further be viewed as Kähler-Ricci soliton generating a one-parameter family of Kähler geometries. All couplings and solutions, namely the BPS domain walls and their supersymmetric Lorentz invariant vacua turn out to be evolved with respect to the flow parameter related to the soliton. Two models are discussed, namely N=1 theory on Kähler-Einstein manifold and U(n) symmetric Kähler-Ricci soliton with positive definite metric. In the first case we fi…
Sengupta's lower bound for the Yang-Mills action on smooth connections on a bundle over a Riemann surface generalizes to the space of connections whose action is finite. In this larger space the inequality can always be saturated. The Yang-Mills critical sets correspond to critical sets of the energy action on a space of paths. This may shed light on Atiyah and Bott's conjecture concerning Morse theory for the space of connections modulo gauge transformations.
Harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces arise from a conformally invariant variational problem. Therefore, on one hand, they are intimately connected with moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces, and on the other hand, because the conformal group is noncompact, constitute a prototype for the formation of singularities, the so-called bubbles, in geometric analysis. In theoretical physics, they arise from the nonlinear $σ$-model of quantum field theory. That model possesses a supersymmetric extension, coupling a harmonic map like field with a nonlinear spinor field. In the physical model, that spinor fiel…
We introduce a natural generalisation of holomorphic curves to morphisms of supermanifolds, referred to as holomorphic supercurves. More precisely, supercurves are morphisms from a Riemann surface, endowed with the structure of a supermanifold which is induced by a holomorphic line bundle, to an ordinary almost complex manifold. They are called holomorphic if a generalised Cauchy-Riemann condition is satisfied. We show, by means of an action identity, that holomorphic supercurves are special extrema of a supersymmetric action functional.
We discuss new relations among string theory, four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) and the Riemann hypothesis. It is known that the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to an inequality for the sum of divisors function $σ(n)$. Based on previous results in literature, we focus on the fact that $σ(n)$ appears in a problem of counting supersymmetric states in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with $SU(3)$ gauge group: the Schur limit of the superconformal index plays a role of a generating function of $σ(n)$. Then assuming the Riemann hypothesis gives bounds on information on…
Morse potential $V_M(x)= g^2\exp (2x)-g(2h+1)\exp(x)$ is defined on the full line, $-\infty<x<\infty$ and it defines an exactly solvable 1-d quantum mechanical system with finitely many discrete eigenstates. By taking its right half $0\le x<\infty$ and glueing it with the left half of its mirror image $V_M(-x)$, $-\infty<x\le0$, the symmetric Morse potential $V(x)= g^2\exp (2|x|)-g(2h+1)\exp(|x|)$ is obtained. The quantum mechanical system of this piecewise analytic potential has infinitely many discrete eigenstates with the corresponding eigenfunctions given by the Whittaker W function. The e…
This paper studies the Schrödinger operator with Morse potential on a right half line [u, \infty) and determines the Weyl asymptotics of eigenvalues for constant boundary conditions. It obtains information on zeros of the Whittaker function $W_{κ, μ}(x)$ for fixed real parameters $κ, x$, with x positive, viewed as an entire function of the complex variable $μ$. In this case all zeros lie on the imaginary axis, with the exception, if $k<0$, of a finite number of real zeros. We obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of zeros of modulus at most T of form $N(T) = (2/π) T \log T + f(u) T + O(1…
Two different approaches are formulated to analyze two-dimensional quantum models which are not amenable to standard separation of variables. Both methods are essentially based on supersymmetrical second order intertwining relations and shape invariance - two main ingredients of the supersymmetrical quantum mechanics. The first method explores the opportunity to separate variables in the supercharge, and it allows to find a part of spectrum of the Schrödinger Hamiltonian. The second method works when the standard separation of variables procedure can be applied for one of the partner Hamiltoni…
This paper constitutes a review on N=2 fractional supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics of order k. The presentation is based on the introduction of a generalized Weyl-Heisenberg algebra W_k. It is shown how a general Hamiltonian can be associated with the algebra W_k. This general Hamiltonian covers various supersymmetrical versions of dynamical systems (Morse system, Poschl-Teller system, fractional supersymmetric oscillator of order k, etc.). The case of ordinary supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics corresponds to k=2. A connection between fractional supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics and ordinary sup…
The unknown parameters of the recently-proposed (Int J. Geom. Meth. Mod. Phys. 1, 751 [2004]) Castro-Mahecha model of the imaginary parts (lambda_{j}) of the nontrivial Riemann zeros are the phases (alpha_{k}) and the frequency parameter (gamma) of the Weierstrass function of fractal dimension D=3/2 and the turning points (x_{j}) of the supersymmetric potential-squared Phi^2(x) -- which incorporates the smooth Wu-Sprung potential (Phys. Rev. E 48, 2595 [1993]), giving the average level density of the Riemann zeros. We conduct numerical investigations to estimate/determine these parameters -- a…
