In this paper, we develop the theory for classifying all the geometric fibrations of compact, connected, flat $n$-orbifolds, over a 1-orbifold, up to affine equivalence. We apply our classification theory to classify all the geometric fibrations of compact, connected, flat $2$-orbifolds, over a 1-orbifold, up to affine equivalence. This paper is an essential part of our project to give a geometric proof of the classification of all closed flat 4-manifolds.
This paper is a continuation of our previous paper, Co-Seifert fibrations of compact flat orbifolds, in which we developed the theory for classifying geometric fibrations of compact, connected, flat $n$-orbifolds, over a 1-orbifold, up to affine equivalence. In this paper, we apply our theory to classify all the geometric fibrations of compact, connected, flat $3$-orbifolds, over a 1-orbifold, up to affine equivalence.
It is well known that, among closed spherical Seifert three-manifolds, only lens spaces and prism manifolds admit several Seifert fibrations which are not equivalent up to diffeomorphism. Moreover the former admit infinitely many fibrations, and the latter exactly two. In this work, we analyse the non-uniqueness phenomenon for orbifold Seifert fibrations. For any closed spherical Seifert three-orbifold, we determine the number of its inequivalent fibrations. When these are in a finite number (in fact, at most three) we provide a complete list. In case of infinitely many fibrations, we describe…
We conclude the multiple fibration problem for closed orientable Seifert three-orbifolds, namely the determination of all the inequivalent fibrations that such an orbifold may admit. We treat here geometric orbifolds with geometries $\mathbb R^3$ and $\mathbb S^2\times\mathbb R$ and bad orbifolds (hence non-geometric), since the only other geometry for which the multiple fibration phenomenon occurs, namely $\mathbb S^3$, has been treated before by the second and third author. For the geometry $\mathbb R^3$ we recover, by direct and geometric arguments, the computer-assisted results obtained by…
We classify the Seifert fibrations of any given lens space L(p,q). We give an algorithmic construction of a Seifert fibration of L(p,q) over the base orbifold S^2(m,n) with the coprime parts of m and n arbitrarily prescribed. This algorithm produces all possible Seifert fibrations, and the equivalences between the resulting Seifert fibrations are described completely. Also, we show that all Seifert fibrations are equivalent to certain standard models.
We compute the connected Heegaard Floer homology (defined by Hendricks, Hom, and Lidman) for a large class of 3-manifolds, including all linear combinations of Seifert fibered homology spheres. We show that for such manifolds, the connected Floer homology completely determines the local equivalence class of the associated $ι$-complex. Some identities relating the rank of the connected Floer homology to the Rokhlin invariant and the Neumann-Siebenmann invariant are also derived. Our computations are based on combinatorial models inspired by the work of Némethi on lattice homology.
In this paper, we add examples to Goeritz groups, the mapping class groups of given Heegaard splittings of 3-manifolds. We focus on a Heegaard splitting of genus two of a Seifert manifold whose base orbifold is sphere with three exceptional points of sufficiently complex coefficients, where "sufficiently complex" means that every surgery coefficient p_{l} over q_{l} of each exceptional fiber (in a surgery description) satisfies that q_{l} is congruent to neither +1 or -1 modulo p_{l}.
We show that if $B$ is an aspherical 2-orbifold in one of the families known to have orbifold fundamental groups of weight 1 then $B$ is the base of a Seifert fibration of a 2-knot manifold $M(K)$.
Let M be a closed orientable Seifert fibered 3-manifold with a hyperbolic base 2-orbifold, or equivalently, admitting a geometry modeled on H^2 \times R or the universal cover of SL(2,R). Our main result is that the connected component of the identity map in the diffeomorphism group Diff(M) is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to the circle, according as the center of the fundamental group of M is trivial or infinite cyclic. Apart from the remaining case of non-Haken infranilmanifolds, this completes the homeomorphism classifications of Diff(M) and of the space of Seifert fiberings of…
We compute the $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer homology of Seifert rational homology three-spheres in terms of their Heegaard Floer homology. As a result of this computation, we prove Manolescu's conjecture that $β=-\barμ$ for Seifert integral homology three-spheres. We show that the Manolescu invariants $α, β,$ and $γ$ give new obstructions to homology cobordisms between Seifert fiber spaces, and that many Seifert homology spheres $Σ(a_1,...,a_n)$ are not homology cobordant to any $-Σ(b_1,...,b_n)$. We then use the same invariants to give an example of an integral homology …
We define the surface complex for $3$-manifolds and embark on a case study in the arena of Seifert fibered spaces. The base orbifold of a Seifert fibered space captures some of the topology of the Seifert fibered space, so, not surprisingly, the surface complex of a Seifert fibered space always contains a subcomplex isomorphic to the curve complex of the base orbifold.
The notion of generalized Seifert fibration is introduced, it is shown that the projections of certain Eschenburg $7$-manifolds onto ${\mathbb C} P^2$ define such fibrations, and for them the characteristic classes corresponding to the generators of $H^2(B(U(2)/{\mathbb Z}_{2n});{\mathbb Z})$ are defined.
We consider product 4--manifolds S^1 X M, where M is a closed, connected and oriented 3-manifold. We prove that if S^1 X M admits a complex structure or a Lefschetz or Seifert fibration, then the following statement is true: S^1 X M admits a symplectic structure if and only if M fibers over S^1, under the additional assumption that M has no fake 3-cells. We also discuss the relationship between the geometry of M and complex structures and Seifert fibrations on S^1 X M.
To each connected component in the space of semisimple representations from the orbifold fundamental group of the base orbifold of a Seifert fibered homology 3-sphere into the Lie group U(2,1), we associate a real number called the "orbifold Toledo invariant." For each such orbifold, there exists an elliptic surface over it, called a Dolgachev surface. Using the theory of Higgs bundles on these Dolgachev surfaces, we explicitly compute all values taken on by the orbifold Toledo invariant.
We extend the adiabatic limit formula for eta-invariants by Bismut-Cheeger and Dai to Seifert fibrations. Our formula contains a new contribution from the singular fibres that takes the form of a generalised Dedekind sum. As an application, we compute the Eells-Kuiper and t-invariants of certain cohomogeneity one manifolds that were studied by Dearricott, Grove, Verdiani, Wilking, and Ziller. In particular, we determine the diffeomorphism type of a new manifold of positive sectional curvature.
We generalize the results of [AS], finding large classes of totally geodesic Seifert surfaces in hyperbolic knot and link complements, each the lift of a rigid 2-orbifold embedded in some hyperbolic 3-orbifold. In addition, we provide a uniqueness theorem and demonstrate that many knots cannot possess totally geodesic Seifert surfaces by giving bounds on the width invariant in the presence of such a surface. Finally, we utilize these examples to demonstrate that the Six Theorem is sharp for knot complements in the 3-sphere.
In early 1930s Seifert and Threlfall classified up to conjugacy the finite subgroups of $\mathrm{SO}(4)$, this gives an algebraic classification of orientable spherical 3-orbifolds. For the most part, spherical 3-orbifolds are Seifert fibered. The underlying topological space and singular set of non-fibered spherical 3-orbifolds were described by Dunbar. In this paper we deal with the fibered case and in particular we give explicit formulae relating the finite subgroups of $\mathrm{SO}(4)$ with the invariants of the corresponding fibered 3-orbifolds. This allows to deduce directly from the alg…
In this paper we introduce the notion of Hurewicz fibrations in the class of embedding maps of orbifold charts by giving the concept of E-fibration embedding. We study the fundamental properties of this concept such as the restriction, product and its relationship with Hurewicz fibration, etc. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of lifting functions of E-fibration embedding and study preserving projection property of these lifting functions.
A Seifert manifold is a 3-dimensional manifold with a circle action. It is a circle bundle (with singularities) over a 2-dimensional orbifold. In this note, we discuss a generalized Seifert manifolds. By definition, they have bundle-like structures whose fibers are infra- homogeneous spaces; that is, the fibers are flat manifolds, almost flat manifolds, etc. We prove existence, uniqueness, rigidity theorems. Many interesting properties and applications are presented.
We study Chern-Simons theory on 3-manifolds M that are circle-bundles over 2-dimensional orbifolds S by the method of Abelianisation. This method, which completely sidesteps the issue of having to integrate over the moduli space of non-Abelian flat connections, reduces the complete partition function of the non-Abelian theory on M to a 2-dimensional Abelian theory on the orbifold S which is easily evaluated.
Let G be an n-dimensional crystallographic group (n-space group). If G is a Z-reducible, then the flat n-orbifold E^n/G has a nontrivial fibered orbifold structure. We prove that this structure can be described by a generalized Calabi construction, that is, E^n/G is represented as the quotient of the Cartesian product of two flat orbifolds under the diagonal action of a structure group of isometries. We determine the structure group and prove that it is finite if and only if the fibered orbifold structure has an orthogonally dual fibered orbifold structure. A geometric fibration of E^n/G corre…
A class of complex hyperbolic lattices in PU(2,1) called the Deligne-Mostow lattices has been reinterpreted by Hirzebruch and others in terms of line arrangements. They use branched covers over a suitable blow up of the complete quadrilateral arrangement of lines in projective 2-space to construct the complex hyperbolic surfaces over the orbifolds associated to the lattices. Fundamental domains for these lattices have been built by Pasquinelli. Here we show how the fundamental domains can be interpreted in terms of line arrangements as above. This parallel is then applied in two contexts. Dash…
Let $M$ be a compact connected orientable Seifert manifold with hyperbolic orbifold $B_M$, and $f_π: π_1(M)\rightarrowπ_1(M)$ be an automorphism induced by an orientation-reversing homeomorphism $f$ of $M$. We give a bound on the rank of the fixed subgroup of $f_π$, namely, $\rank\fix(f_π)<2\rank π_1(M)$, which is similar to the inequalities on surface groups and hyperbolic 3-manifold groups.
A first order Vassiliev invariant of an oriented knot in an $S^1$-fibration and a Seifert fibration over a surface is constructed. It takes values in a quotient of the group ring of the first homology group of the total space of the fibration. It gives rise to an invariant of wave fronts on surfaces and orbifolds related to the Bennequin-type invariants of the Legendrian curves studied by F. Aicardi, V. Arnold, M. Polyak, and S. Tabachnikov. Formulas expressing these relations are presented. We also calculate Turaev's shadow for the Legendrian lifting of a wave front. This allows to use in the…
We study the general properties of the moduli spaces of SO(3) vortices over orbifold Riemann surfaces and use these to characterize the solutions of the SO(3) monopole equations on Seifert manifolds following in the footsteps of Mrowka, Ozsváth and Yu. We also study the solutions to the SO(3) monopole equations on S1 x (Riemann Surface) in order to motivate the construction of a version of monopole Floer homology, which we call framed monopole Floer homology, in analogy with the construction given by Kronheimer and Mrowka for the case of instanton Floer homology. Finally, the SO(3) vortex modu…
In this paper, we prove that a normal subgroup N of an n-dimensional crystallographic group G determines a geometric fibered orbifold structure on the flat orbifold E^n/G, and conversely every geometric fibered orbifold structure on E^n/G is determined by a normal subgroup N of G, which is maximal in its commensurability class of normal subgroups of G. In particular, we prove that E^n/G is a fiber bundle, with totally geodesic fibers, over a b-dimensional torus, where b is the first Betti number of G. Let N be a normal subgroup of G which is maximal in its commensurability class. We study the …
In this paper we prove a vanishing theorem for the contact Ozsvath--Szabo invariants of certain contact 3--manifolds having positive Giroux torsion. We use this result to establish similar vanishing results for contact structures with underlying 3--manifolds admitting either a torus fibration over the circle or a Seifert fibration over an orientable base. We also show -- using standard techniques from contact topology -- that if a contact 3--manifold (Y,ξ) has positive Giroux torsion then there exists a Stein cobordism from (Y,ξ) to a contact 3--manifold (Y,ξ') such that (Y,ξ) is obtained from…
