On the basis of a non-local Lagrangian for Maxwell equations in a dispersive medium, the energy-momentum tensor of the field is derived. We obtain the Field equations through variational methods and an extension of Noether theorem for a non-local Lagrangian is obtained as well. The electromagnetic energy-momentum tensor obtained in the general context is then specialized to the case of a field with slowly varying amplitude on a rapidly oscillating carrier.
We extend the usual derivation of the wave equation from Maxwell's equations in vacuum to the case of electromagnetic fields in dispersive homogeneous isotropic linear media. Usually, dispersive properties of materials are studied in Fourier space. However, it can be rewarding to consider these properties as causal functions of time. Due to temporal non locality, this procedure gives rise to an integrodifferential equation for the electromagnetic fields, which we also call a wave equation. We have not found this equation in the literature and we show in this paper why it can be useful.
We present an elementary discussion of the momentum transferred by an electromagnetic wave propagating in a dispersive medium. Our analysis is based on Minkowski's electromagnetic momentum density which have been recently seen to be consistent with a fully covariant expression of the energy-momentum tensor of the electromagnetic field in a dispersive medium and with all the experimental evidence. We show that the medium may be either pulled or pushed as the electromagnetic pulse enters in it depending on the value of the frequency.
Three objections to the canonical analytical treatment of covariant electromagnetic theory are presented: (i) only half of Maxwell's equations are present upon variation of the fundamental Lagrangian; (ii) the trace of the canonical energy-momentum tensor is not equivalent to the trace of the observed energy-momentum tensor; (iii) the Belinfante symmetrization procedure exists separate from the analytical approach in order to obtain the known observed result. It is shown that the analytical construction from Noether's theorem is based on manipulations that were developed to obtain the compact …
A method is proposed for the analysis of the propagation of electromagnetic waves through a homogeneous slab of a medium with Drude-Lorentz dispersion behavior, and excited by a causal sinusoidal source. An expression of the time dependent field, free from branch-cuts in the plane of complex frequencies, is established. This method provides the complete temporal response in both the steady-state and transient regimes in terms of discrete poles contributions. The Sommerfeld and Brillouin precursors are retrieved and the corresponding set of poles are identified. In addition, the contribution in…
For electromagnetic field theories, canonical energy-momentum conservation laws can be derived from the underpinning spacetime translation symmetry according to the Noether procedure. However, the canonical Energy-Momentum Tensors (EMTs) are neither symmetric nor gauge-symmetric (gauge invariant). The Belinfante-Rosenfeld (BR) method is a well-known procedure to symmetrize the EMTs, which also renders them gauge symmetric for first-order field theories. High-order electromagnetic field theories appear in the study of gyrokinetic systems for magnetized plasmas and the Podolsky system for the ra…
In this paper, we give the covariant formulation of second gradient electrodynamics, which is a generalized electrodynamics of second order including derivatives of higher order. The relativistic form of the field equations, the energy-momentum tensor and the Lorentz force density are presented. For an electric point charge, the generalized Lienard-Wiechert potentials and the corresponding electromagnetic field strength tensor are given as retarded integral expressions. Explicit formulas for the electromagnetic potential vector and electromagnetic field strength tensor of a uniformly moving po…
