Obituaries contain information about people's values across times and cultures, which makes them a useful resource for exploring cultural history. They are typically structured similarly, with sections corresponding to Personal Information, Biographical Sketch, Characteristics, Family, Gratitude, Tribute, Funeral Information and Other aspects of the person. To make this information available for further studies, we propose a statistical model which recognizes these sections. To achieve that, we collect a corpus of 20058 English obituaries from TheDaily Item, Remembering.CA and The London Free Press. The evaluation of our annotation guidelines with three annotators on 1008 obituaries shows a substantial agreement of Fleiss k = 0.87. Formulated as an automatic segmentation task, a convolutional neural network outperforms bag-of-words and embedding-based BiLSTMs and BiLSTM-CRFs with a micro F1 = 0.81.

This study reports our efforts to improve automatic recognition of suprasegmentals by fine-tuning wav2vec 2.0 with CTC, a method that has been successful in automatic speech recognition. We demonstrate that the method can improve the state-of-the-art on automatic recognition of syllables, tones, and pitch accents. Utilizing segmental information, by employing tonal finals or tonal syllables as recognition units, can significantly improve Mandarin tone recognition. Language models are helpful when tonal syllables are used as recognition units, but not helpful when tones are recognition units. F…
In this paper, we have analyzed the impact of confusions on the robustness of phoneme recognitions system. The confusions are detected at the pronunciation and the confusions matrices of the phoneme recognizer. The confusions show that some similarities between phonemes at the pronunciation affect significantly the recognition rates. This paper proposes to understand those confusions in order to improve the performance of the phoneme recognition system by isolating the problematic phonemes. Confusion analysis leads to build a new hierarchical recognizer using new phoneme distribution and the i…
This paper presents a state-of-the-art system for Vietnamese Named Entity Recognition (NER). By incorporating automatic syntactic features with word embeddings as input for bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM), our system, although simpler than some deep learning architectures, achieves a much better result for Vietnamese NER. The proposed method achieves an overall F1 score of 92.05% on the test set of an evaluation campaign, organized in late 2016 by the Vietnamese Language and Speech Processing (VLSP) community. Our named entity recognition system outperforms the best previous sys…
Speech recognition in mixed language has difficulties to adapt end-to-end framework due to the lack of data and overlapping phone sets, for example in words such as "one" in English and "wàn" in Chinese. We propose a CTC-based end-to-end automatic speech recognition model for intra-sentential English-Mandarin code-switching. The model is trained by joint training on monolingual datasets, and fine-tuning with the mixed-language corpus. During the decoding process, we apply a beam search and combine CTC predictions and language model score. The proposed method is effective in leveraging monoling…

With the evolution of neural network based methods, automatic speech recognition (ASR) field has been advanced to a level where building an application with speech interface is a reality. In spite of these advances, building a real-time speech recogniser faces several problems such as low recognition accuracy, domain constraint, and out-of-vocabulary words. The low recognition accuracy problem is addressed by improving the acoustic model, language model, decoder and by rescoring the N-best list at the output of the decoder. We are considering the N-best list rescoring approach to improve the r…

This work consists of creating a system of the Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) based on a system of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) for the Arabic language using the tool CMU Sphinx3 [1], based on the approach of HMM. To this work, we have constructed a corpus of six hours of speech recordings with a number of nine speakers. we find in the robustness to noise a grounds for the choice of the HMM approach [2]. the results achieved are encouraging since our corpus is made by only nine speakers, but they are always reasons that open the door for other improvement works.

This paper describes methods for evaluating automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems in comparison with human perception results, using measures derived from linguistic distinctive features. Error patterns in terms of manner, place and voicing are presented, along with an examination of confusion matrices via a distinctive-feature-distance metric. These evaluation methods contrast with conventional performance criteria that focus on the phone or word level, and are intended to provide a more detailed profile of ASR system performance,as well as a means for direct comparison with human percep…

In this paper, we present a method for correcting automatic speech recognition (ASR) errors using a finite state transducer (FST) intent recognition framework. Intent recognition is a powerful technique for dialog flow management in turn-oriented, human-machine dialogs. This technique can also be very useful in the context of human-human dialogs, though it serves a different purpose of key insight extraction from conversations. We argue that currently available intent recognition techniques are not applicable to human-human dialogs due to the complex structure of turn-taking and various disflu…
Large language models have been proven quite beneficial for a variety of automatic speech recognition tasks in Google. We summarize results on Voice Search and a few YouTube speech transcription tasks to highlight the impact that one can expect from increasing both the amount of training data, and the size of the language model estimated from such data. Depending on the task, availability and amount of training data used, language model size and amount of work and care put into integrating them in the lattice rescoring step we observe reductions in word error rate between 6% and 10% relative, …
The article describes a model of automatic interpretation of English puns, based on Roget's Thesaurus, and its implementation, PunFields. In a pun, the algorithm discovers two groups of words that belong to two main semantic fields. The fields become a semantic vector based on which an SVM classifier learns to recognize puns. A rule-based model is then applied for recognition of intentionally ambiguous (target) words and their definitions. In SemEval Task 7 PunFields shows a considerably good result in pun classification, but requires improvement in searching for the target word and its defini…
Voice assistive technologies have given rise to far-reaching privacy and security concerns. In this paper we investigate whether modular automatic speech recognition (ASR) can improve privacy in voice assistive systems by combining independently trained separation, recognition, and discretization modules to design configurable privacy-preserving ASR systems. We evaluate privacy concerns and the effects of applying various state-of-the-art techniques at each stage of the system, and report results using task-specific metrics (i.e. WER, ABX, and accuracy). We show that overlapping speech inputs …

Designing a natural voice interface rely mostly on Speech recognition for interaction between human and their modern digital life equipment. In addition, speech recognition narrows the gap between monolingual individuals to better exchange communication. However, the field lacks wide support for several universal languages and their dialects, while most of the daily conversations are carried out using them. This paper comes to inspect the viability of designing an Automatic Speech Recognition model for the Sudanese dialect, which is one of the Arabic Language dialects, and its complexity is a …
The following paper presents a project focused on the research and creation of a new Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) based in the Chukchi language. There is no one complete corpus of the Chukchi language, so most of the work consisted in collecting audio and texts in the Chukchi language from open sources and processing them. We managed to collect 21:34:23 hours of audio recordings and 112,719 sentences (or 2,068,273 words) of text in the Chukchi language. The XLSR model was trained on the obtained data, which showed good results even with a small amount of data. Besides the fact that the C…
Automatically recognized terminology is widely used for various domain-specific texts processing tasks, such as machine translation, information retrieval or sentiment analysis. However, there is still no agreement on which methods are best suited for particular settings and, moreover, there is no reliable comparison of already developed methods. We believe that one of the main reasons is the lack of state-of-the-art methods implementations, which are usually non-trivial to recreate. In order to address these issues, we present ATR4S, an open-source software written in Scala that comprises mor…
Social media posts contain potentially valuable information about medical conditions and health-related behavior. Biocreative VII Task 3 focuses on mining this information by recognizing mentions of medications and dietary supplements in tweets. We approach this task by fine tuning multiple BERT-style language models to perform token-level classification, and combining them into ensembles to generate final predictions. Our best system consists of five Megatron-BERT-345M models and achieves a strict F1 score of 0.764 on unseen test data.
Automatic Speech Recognition involves mainly two steps; feature extraction and classification . Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient is used as one of the prominent feature extraction techniques in ASR. Usually, the set of all 12 MFCC coefficients is used as the feature vector in the classification step. But the question is whether the same or improved classification accuracy can be achieved by using a subset of 12 MFCC as feature vector. In this paper, Fisher's ratio technique is used for selecting a subset of 12 MFCC coefficients that contribute more in discriminating a pattern. The selected c…

Automatic speech recognition enables a wide range of current and emerging applications such as automatic transcription, multimedia content analysis, and natural human-computer interfaces. This paper provides a glimpse of the opportunities and challenges that parallelism provides for automatic speech recognition and related application research from the point of view of speech researchers. The increasing parallelism in computing platforms opens three major possibilities for speech recognition systems: improving recognition accuracy in non-ideal, everyday noisy environments; increasing recogniti…
Features such as punctuation, capitalization, and formatting of entities are important for readability, understanding, and natural language processing tasks. However, Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems produce spoken-form text devoid of formatting, and tagging approaches to formatting address just one or two features at a time. In this paper, we unify spoken-to-written text conversion via a two-stage process: First, we use a single transformer tagging model to jointly produce token-level tags for inverse text normalization (ITN), punctuation, capitalization, and disfluencies. Then, we …
Hidden Markov models (HMMs) have been successfully applied to automatic speech recognition for more than 35 years in spite of the fact that a key HMM assumption -- the statistical independence of frames -- is obviously violated by speech data. In fact, this data/model mismatch has inspired many attempts to modify or replace HMMs with alternative models that are better able to take into account the statistical dependence of frames. However it is fair to say that in 2010 the HMM is the consensus model of choice for speech recognition and that HMMs are at the heart of both commercially available …

We propose a system to develop a basic automatic speech recognizer(ASR) for Cantonese, a low-resource language, through transfer learning of Mandarin, a high-resource language. We take a time-delayed neural network trained on Mandarin, and perform weight transfer of several layers to a newly initialized model for Cantonese. We experiment with the number of layers transferred, their learning rates, and pretraining i-vectors. Key findings are that this approach allows for quicker training time with less data. We find that for every epoch, log-probability is smaller for transfer learning models c…

Transcribing voice communications in NASA's launch control center is important for information utilization. However, automatic speech recognition in this environment is particularly challenging due to the lack of training data, unfamiliar words in acronyms, multiple different speakers and accents, and conversational characteristics of speaking. We used bidirectional deep recurrent neural networks to train and test speech recognition performance. We showed that data augmentation and custom language models can improve speech recognition accuracy. Transcribing communications from the launch contr…

We evaluated the proposed approach on the MSP-Podcast dataset, where we achieved the best reported concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) of 0.41 for v…
This paper provides an overall introduction of our Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems for Southeast Asian languages. Second, we present a novel approach to automatic personality recognition using pre-trained…
Today, the vocabulary size for language models in large vocabulary speech recognition is typically several hundreds of thousands of words. While this is already sufficient in some applications, the out-of-vocabulary words are still limiting the usability in others. In agglutinative languages the vocabulary for conversational speech should include millions of word forms to cover the spelling variations due to colloquial pronunciations, in addition to the word compounding and inflections. Very large vocabularies are also needed, for example, when the recognition of rare proper names is important…

The brain-inspired spiking neural networks (SNN) closely mimic the biological neural networks and can operate on low-power neuromorphic hardware with spike-based computation. Motivated by their unprecedented energyefficiency and rapid information processing capability, we explore the use of SNNs for speech recognition. In this work, we use SNNs for aco…
A new label smoothing method that makes use of prior knowledge of a language at human level, homophone, is proposed in this paper for automatic speech recognition (ASR). Compared with its forerunners, the proposed method uses pronunciation knowledge of homophones in a more complex way. End-to-end ASR models that learn acoustic model and language model jointly and modelling units of characters are necessary conditions for this method. Experiments with hybrid CTC sequence-to-sequence model show that the new method can reduce character error rate (CER) by 0.4% absolutely.
When evaluating the performance of automatic speech recognition models, usually word error rate within a certain dataset is used. Special care must be taken in understanding the dataset in order to report realistic performance numbers. We argue that many performance numbers reported probably underestimate the expected error rate. We conduct experiments controlling for selection bias, gender as well as overlap (between training and test data) in content, voices, and recording conditions. We find that content overlap has the biggest impact, but other factors like gender also play a role.
In this paper, we review various end-to-end automatic speech recognition algorithms and their optimization techniques for on-device applications. Conventional speech recognition systems comprise a large number of discrete components such as an acoustic model, a language model, a pronunciation model, a text-normalizer, an inverse-text normalizer, a decoder based on a Weighted Finite State Transducer (WFST), and so on. To obtain sufficiently high speech recognition accuracy with such conventional speech recognition systems, a very large language model (up to 100 GB) is usually needed. Hence, the…

Multi-lingual speech recognition aims to distinguish linguistic expressions in different languages and integrate acoustic processing simultaneously. In contrast, current multi-lingual speech recognition research follows a language-aware paradigm, mainly targeted to improve recognition performance rather than discriminate language characteristics. In this paper, we present a multi-lingual speech recognition network named Mixture-of-Language-Expert(MoLE), which digests speech in a variety of languages. Specifically, MoLE analyzes linguistic expression from input speech in arbitrary languages, ac…

Automatic speech recognition models are often adapted to improve their accuracy in a new domain. A potential drawback of model adaptation to new domains is catastrophic forgetting, where the Word Error Rate on the original domain is significantly degraded. This paper addresses the situation when we want to simultaneously adapt automatic speech recognition models to a new domain and limit the degradation of accuracy on the original domain without access to the original training dataset. We propose several techniques such as a limited training strategy and regularized adapter modules for the Tra…
