We study the Planck scale effects on Jarlskog determinant. Quantum gravitational (Planck scale) effects lead to an effective SU(2)_{L}\times U(1) invariant dimension-5 Lagrangian involving neutrino and Higgs fields, which gives rise to additional terms in neutrino mass matrix on electroweak symmetry breaking. We assume that gravitational interaction is flavor blind and compute the Jarlskog determinant due to the Planck scale effects. In the case of neutrino sector, the strength of CP violation is measured by Jarlskog determinant. In this paper, we assume CP violation arise from Planck scale ef…
An asymmetry between the probabilities P(ν_μ\toν_{e}) and P(\bar{ν_μ}\to\bar{ν_{e}}) would be direct indication of CP violation at the fundamental level. Planck scale effects on neutrino mixing, we have derived the mixing angles of neutrino flavour due to Planck scale effects. It has been shown that Jarlskog determinant remains nearly invariant due to Planck scale effects.
The essences of the weak CP violation, the quark and lepton Jarlskog invariants, are determined toward future model buildings beyond the Standard Model (SM). The equivalence of two calculations of Jarlskog invariants gives a bound on the CP phase in some parametrization. Satisfying the unitarity condition, we obtain the CKM and MNS matrices from the experimental data, and present the results in matrix forms. The Jarlskog determinant $J^q$ in the quark sector is found to be $\sim 3.11\times 10^{-5}|\sin\delks|$ while $J^\ell$ in the leptonic sector is $\sim 2.96\times 10^{-2}|\sin\delksl|$ in t…
Terrestrial matter effects in neutrino propagation are T-invariant, so that any observed T violation when neutrinos pass through the Earth, such as an asymmetry between the transition probabilities P(nu_mu -> nu_e) and P(nu_e -> nu_mu), would be a direct indication of T violation at the fundamental level. Matter effects do however modify the magnitudes of T-violating asymmetries, and it has long been known that resonant enhancement can lead to large effects for a range of plausible values of the relevant parameters. We note that the determinant of the commutator of the lepton mass matrices is …
Making the whole determinant of the CKM matrix V real, the imaginary part of any one term of the determinant of V (e. g. |Im V_{31}V_{22}V_{13}|) is the Jarlskog determinant J. We also point out that the maximality of the weak CP violation is a physical statement
While Jarlskog-like flavor invariants are adequate for estimating CP-violation from closed fermion loops, non-invariant structures arise from rainbow-like processes. For the CKM contributions to the quark electric dipole moments (EDMs), or the PMNS contributions to lepton EDMs, the dominant diagrams have a rainbow topology whose flavor structure does not collapse to flavor invariants. Numerically, they are found typically much larger, and not necessarily correlated with, Jarlskog-like invariants. The flavor structures in the quark and lepton sectors are systematically studied, assuming differe…
Working in the basis where the charged-lepton Yukawa matrix is diagonal and making the $τ$-dominance approximations, we analytically derive integral solutions to the one-loop renormalization-group equations (RGEs) for neutrino masses, flavor mixing angles, CP-violating phases and the Jarlskog invariant under the standard parametrization of the PMNS matrix in the standard model or its minimal supersymmetric extension for both Majorana and Dirac neutrinos. With these integral solutions, we carry out numerical calculations to investigate the RGE running of lepton flavor mixing parameters and the …
In this paper, we show that the ratio of the effective Jarlskog invariant $\widetilde{\cal J}$ for leptonic CP violation in three-flavor neutrino oscillations in matter to its counterpart ${\cal J}$ in vacuum $\widetilde{\cal J}/{\cal J} \approx 1/(\hat{C}^{}_{12} \hat{C}^{}_{13})$ holds as an excellent approximation, where $\hat{C}^{}_{12} \equiv \sqrt{1 - 2 \hat{A}^{}_* \cos 2θ^{}_{12} + \hat{A}^2_*}$ with $\hat{A}^{}_* \equiv a\cos^2 θ^{}_{13}/Δ^{}_{21}$ and $\hat{C}^{}_{13} \equiv \sqrt{1 - 2 A^{}_{\rm c} \cos 2θ^{}_{13} + A^2_{\rm c}}$ with $A^{}_{\rm c} \equiv a/Δ^{}_{\rm c}$. Here $Δ^{}…
In this paper, the flavor structure of quark and lepton EDMs in the SM and beyond is investigated using tools inspired from Minimal Flavor Violation. While Jarlskog-like flavor invariants are adequate for estimating CP-violation from closed fermion loops, non-invariant structures arise from rainbow-like processes. Our goal is to systematically construct these latter flavor structures in the quark and lepton sectors, assuming different mechanisms for generating neutrino masses. Numerically, they are found typically much larger, and not necessarily correlated with, Jarlskog-like invariants. Fina…
Neutrino Mixing Phenomenology: $A_4$ Discrete Flavor Symmetry with Type-I Seesaw Mechanism
We propose a model based on the gauge group $SU(3)_{C}\otimes SU(3)_{L}\otimes U(1)_{X}$ with an extra $S_{3}$ flavor symmetry, which accounts for the lepton masses and mixing. The small active neutrino masses are generated via a double seesaw mechanism. In this scenario, the spectrum of neutrinos presents very light, light and very heavy masses. The model predicts a quasidegenerate normal hierarchy active neutrino mass spectrum and the relation $Δm_{21}^{2}\ll Δm_{31}^{2}$ arises from effective six-dimensional operators. The obtained neutrino mixing parameters are in agreement with the neutri…
Viable neutrino and charged lepton masses and mixings are obtained by imposing a $S_3 \times Z_4 \times Z_3$ flavor symmetry in a model with a few additional Higgs. We use two $SU(2)_L$ triplet Higgs which are arranged as a doublet of $S_3$, and standard model singlet Higgs which are also put as doublets of $S_3$. We break the $S_3$ symmetry in this minimal model by giving vacuum expectation values (VEV) to the additional Higgs fields. Dictated by the minimum condition for the scalar potential, we obtain certain VEV alignments which allow us to maintain $μ-τ$ symmetry in the neutrino sector, w…
We propose a 3-3-1 model where the $SU(3)_{C}\otimes SU(3)_{L}\otimes U(1)_{X}$ symmetry is extended by $S_{3}\otimes Z_{3}\otimes Z_{3}^{\prime }\otimes Z_{8}\otimes Z_{16}$ and the scalar spectrum is enlarged by extra $% SU(3)_{L}$ singlet scalar fields. The model successfully describes the observed SM fermion mass and mixing pattern. In this framework, the light active neutrino masses arise via an inverse seesaw mechanism and the observed charged fermion mass and quark mixing hierarchy is a consequence of the $Z_{3}\otimes Z_{3}^{\prime }\otimes Z_{8}\otimes Z_{16}$ symmetry breaking at ver…
Given the Dirac neutrino mass term, we explore the constraint conditions which allow the corresponding mass matrix to be invariant under the μ-τreflection transformation, leading us to the phenomenologically favored predictions θ_{23} = π/4 and δ= 3π/2 in the standard parametrization of the 3\times 3 lepton flavor mixing matrix. If such a flavor symmetry is realized at a superhigh energy scale Λ_{μτ}, we investigate how it is spontaneously broken via the one-loop renormalization-group equations (RGEs) running from Λ_{μτ} down to the Fermi scale Λ_{\rm F}. Such quantum corrections to the neutri…
We discuss different $\rm SU(5)$ low-energy realizations and illustrate their use with the diphoton excess and Higgs flavor violation, which require new physics at the TeV scale. In particular, we study two scenarios for a $750$ GeV resonance: in the first one the resonance belongs to the adjoint of $\rm SU(5)$, being either an $\rm SU(2)_L$ singlet or a triplet, while in the second case the signal is due to the CP-even and CP-odd states of a new $\rm SU(2)_L$ Higgs doublet belonging to a ${\bf 45}_H$ or a ${\bf 70}_H$ representations, giving rise to a two-Higgs doublet model at low energies. …
We construct a model of spontaneous CP violation in E6 supersymmetric grand unified theory. In the model, we employ an SU(2)F flavor symmetry and an anomalous U(1)A symmetry. The SU(2)F flavor symmetry is introduced to provide the origin of hierarchical structures of Yukawa coupling and to ensure the universality of sfermion soft masses. The anomalous U(1)A symmetry is introduced to realize the doublet-triplet mass splitting, to provide the origin of hierarchical structures of Yukawa couplings, and to solve the mu problem. In the model, CP is spontaneously broken by the SU(2)F breaking in orde…
Consistency of present-day lattice QCD simulations with dynamical (``sea'') staggered fermions requires that the determinant of the staggered-fermion Dirac operator, $det(D)$, be equal to $det^4(D_{rg}) det(T)$ where $D_{rg}$ is a local one-flavor lattice Dirac operator, and $T$ is a local operator containing only excitations with masses of the order of the cutoff. Using renormalization-group (RG) block transformations I show that, in the limit of infinitely many RG steps, the required decomposition exists for the free staggered operator in the ``flavor representation.'' The resulting one-flav…
Phase diagram of a chiral random matrix model with the degenerate ud quarks and the s quark at finite temperature and density is presented. The model exhibits a first-order transition at finite temperature for three massless flavors, owing to the U_A(1) breaking determinant term. We study the order of the transition with changing the quark masses and the quark chemical potential, and show that the first-order transition region expands as the chemical potential increases. We also discuss the behavior of the meson masses and the susceptibilities near the critical point.
Coupling of `t Hooft's determinant term is investigated in the framework of the three flavor linear sigma model as a function of the chiral condensate. Using perturbation theory around the minimum point of the effective action, we calculate the renormalization group flow of the first field dependent correction to the coupling of the conventional U_A(1) breaking determinant term. It is found that at low temperatures mesonic fluctuations make the anomaly increase when the chiral condensate decreases. As an application, we analyze the effect at the zero temperature nuclear liquid-gas transition.
A model for the lepton-flavor mixing and CP violation is proposed based on the SU$_F$(3) gauge family symmetry and the Majorana feature of neutrinos. A consistent prediction for the lepton-flavor mixing and masses is shown to be resulted from the appropriate vacuum structure of SU$_F$(3) gauge symmetry breaking. By choosing the SU$_F$(3) gauge fixing condition to possess a residual $Z_2$ symmetry and requiring the vacuum structure of spontaneous symmetry breaking to have approximate global U(1) family symmetries, we obtain naturally the tri-bimaximal mixing matrix and largely degenerate neutri…
We explain all features of lepton and quark mixing in a scenario with the flavor symmetry Delta (384) and a CP symmetry, where these are broken in several steps. The residual symmetry in the neutrino and up quark sector is a Klein group and CP, while a Z_3 and a Z_{16} symmetry are preserved among charged leptons and down quarks, respectively. If the Klein group in the neutrino sector is further broken down to a single Z_2 symmetry, we obtain predictions for all lepton mixing parameters in terms of one real quantity, whose size is determined by the value of the reactor mixing angle. The Dirac …
The chiral phase transition in the conventional random matrix model is the second order in the chiral limit, irrespective of the number of flavors N_f, because it lacks the U_A(1)-breaking determinant interaction term. Furthermore, it predicts an unphysical value of zero for the topological susceptibility at finite temperatures. We propose a new chiral random matrix model which resolves these difficulties by incorporating the determinant interaction term within the instanton gas picture. The model produces a second-order transition for N_f=2 and a first-order transition for N_f=3, and recovers…
A non anomalous horizontal $U(1)_H$ gauge symmetry can be responsible for the fermion mass hierarchies of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Imposing the consistency conditions for the absence of gauge anomalies yields the following results: i) unification of leptons and down-type quarks Yukawa couplings is allowed at most for two generations. ii) The $μ$ term is necessarily somewhat below the supersymmetry breaking scale. iii) The determinant of the quark mass matrix vanishes, and there is no strong $CP$ problem. iv) The superpotential has accidental $B$ and $L$ symmetries. The predic…
It is shown that flavor mixing of the strange and light quarks allows for existence of a much larger baryonic chemical potential window for the formation of a stable dual chiral-wave state as compared to the well known two flavor case. In addition, strangeness catalyzes the occurrence of a new branch of non-homogeneous solutions at moderate densities. This case study is addressed at zero temperature within the SU(3) flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with the 't Hooft determinantal flavor mixing interaction. The modulation of the chiral condensates in the light quark sector is taken to be one-dim…
We present the first multiscalar singlet extension of the 3-3-1 model with right-handed neutrinos, based on the $Δ\left( 27\right) $ family symmetry, supplemented by the $Z_{4}\otimes Z_{8}\otimes Z_{14}$ flavor group, consistent with current low energy fermion flavor data. In the model under consideration, the light active neutrino masses are generated from a double seesaw mechanism and the observed pattern of charged fermion masses and quark mixing angles is caused by the breaking of the $Δ\left( 27\right) \otimes Z_{4}\otimes Z_{8}\otimes Z_{14}$ discrete group at very high energy. Our mode…
The predictive soft-wall AdS/QCD model with a modified 5D metric at the infrared region is constructed to obtain a non-trivial dilaton solution for three flavor quarks $u$, $d$ and $s$. Such a model is shown to incorporate both the chiral symmetry breaking and linear confinement. After considering some high-order terms including the $U(1)_L\times U(1)_R$ chiral symmetry breaking term, we find that the resulting predictions for the SU(3) octet and singlet resonance states of pseudoscalar, scalar, vector and axial-vector mesons agree well with the experimentally confirmed resonance states. Contr…
The effective quark interactions that break explicitly the chiral SU(3)_L X SU(3)_R and U_A(1) symmetries by current-quark mass source terms are considered in NLO in $N_c$ counting. They are of the same order as the 't Hooft flavor determinant and the eight quark interactions that extend the LO Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Lagrangian, and complete the set of non-derivative and spin 0 interactions relevant for the $N_c$ scheme. The bosonized Lagrangian at meson tree level describes accurately the empirical ordering and magnitude of the splitting of states in the low lying pseudoscalar and scalar meson no…

We study SU(2) lattice gauge theory at non-zero chemical potential with one staggered quark flavor in the adjoint representation. In this model the fermion determinant, although real, can be both positive and negative. We have performed numerical simulations using both hybrid Monte Carlo and two-step multibosonic algorithms, the latter being capable of exploring sectors with either determinant sign. We find that the positive determinant sector behaves like a two-flavor theory, with the chiral condensate rotating into a two-flavor diquark condensate for mu>m_pi/2, implying a superfluid ground s…
In this work we present the results from numerical simulations of an interacting ensemble of instanton-dyons in the $SU(3)$ gauge group with $N_f=2$ flavors of massless quarks. Dynamical quarks are included via the effective interactions induced by the fermionic determinant evaluated in the subspace of topological zero modes. The eigenvalue spectrum of the Dirac operator is studied at different volumes to extract the chiral condensate and eigenvalue gap, with both observables providing consistent values of the chiral transition temperature $T_c$. We find that a sufficient density of dyons is r…
Extensions of the NJL model which go beyond the original 4-quark interaction, which drives the dynamical mass generation, have proven to be quite successful in describing low energy hadronic phenomenology. The inclusion of 8-quark interaction terms solved a metastability problem of the effective potential introduced by the inclusion of the 6-quark 't Hooft determinant term in the 3-flavor version of the model (needed to eliminate the unwanted U(1) axial symmetry) . This model, that has proven to be quite powerful and feature-rich, has been expanded to include all the spin-0 terms, without and …
The QCD axion fails to solve the strong CP problem unless all explicit PQ violating, Planck-suppressed, dimension n<10 operators are forbidden or have exponentially small coefficients. We show that all theories with a QCD axion contain an irreducible source of explicit PQ violation which is proportional to the determinant of the Yukawa interaction matrix of colored fermions. Generically, this contribution is of low operator dimension and will drastically destabilize the axion potential, so its suppression is a necessary condition for solving the strong CP problem. We propose a mechanism whereb…
The interplay of mesonic fluctuations with an axial $U(1)_A$-symmetry breaking and resulting effects on the location of a possibly existing critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram are investigated in a framework of the functional renormalization group within a $N_f = 2 + 1$ flavor quark-meson model truncation. The axial $U(1)_A$-symmetry breaking is imposed by a mesonic Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft determinant. The quark mass sensitivity of the chiral phase transition with and without the $U(1)_A$-symmetry breaking is studied.
We conjecture that all CP violations (both Dirac and Majorana types) arise from a common origin in neutrino seesaw. With this conceptually attractive and simple conjecture, we deduce that mu-tau breaking shares the common origin with all CP violations. We study the common origin of mu-tau and CP breaking in the Dirac mass matrix of seesaw Lagrangian (with right-handed neutrinos being mu-tau blind), which uniquely leads to inverted mass-ordering of light neutrinos. We then predict a very different correlation between the two small mu-tau breaking observables theta_{13}-0 and theta_{23}-45, whic…
We establish a systematic construction of the on-shell amplitude/operator basis for Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) in $D=4$ spacetime dimensions and with an arbitrary number of flavors $N_f$. For kinematic factors, we employ spinor-helicity variables to construct the soft blocks, which are local amplitudes satisfying the Adler's zero condition, as well as to take into account the reduction in the kinematic basis due to the Gram determinant, which arises at $O(p^{10})$ when the number of multiplicity $N$ in an amplitude becomes large: $N>D$. For flavor factors, we include group-theoretic rel…
Many results from lattice QCD of broad importance to particle and nuclear physics are obtained with 2+1 flavors of staggered sea quarks. In the continuum limit, staggered fermions yield four species, called tastes. To reduce the number of tastes to one (per flavor), the simulation employs the fourth root of the four-taste staggered fermion determinant. This talk surveys evidence in favor of this procedure, refutes recent criticisms, and reviews recent algorithmic and technical improvements. Physics results are covered in other plenary talks.
We identify the global symmetries of SU(2) lattice gauge theory with N flavors of staggered fermion in the presence of a quark chemical potential mu, for fermions in both fundamental and adjoint representations, and anticipate likely patterns of symmetry breaking at both low and high densities. Results from numerical simulations of the model with N=1 adjoint flavor on a 4^3x8 lattice are presented, using both hybrid Monte Carlo and Two-Step Multi-Boson algorithms. It is shown that the sign of the fermion determinant starts to fluctuate once the model enters a phase with non-zero baryon charge …
We propose a neutrino mass model with $μτ$-flavored CP symmetry, where the effective light neutrino Lagrangian enjoys an additional invariance under a Friedberg-Lee (FL) transformation on the left-handed flavor neutrino fields, that leads to a highly predictive and testable scenario. While both types of the light neutrino mass ordering, i.e., Normal Ordering (NO) as well as the Inverted Ordering (IO) are allowed, the absolute scale of neutrino masses is fixed by the vanishing determinant of light Majorana neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$. We show that for both types of mass ordering, whilst the atmo…
We report on the $U_{A}(1)$ symmetry restoration resulting due to temperature dependence of the coefficient c(T) for the Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft determinant (KMT) term in a modified 2+1 flavor Polyakov loop quark meson model having fermionic vacuum correction term (PQMVT).Temperature dependence of KMT coupling c(T) drives the non-strange condensate melting to significantly smaller temperatures in comparison to the constant c case.Further due to c(T), $m_{η^{\prime}}$ decreases from its vacuum value by 220 MeV near T=176 MeV after the chiral transition ($T_{c}^χ=154.9$ MeV).This is similar t…
We investigate the chiral phase transition in the soft-wall model of AdS/QCD at zero chemical potential for two-flavor and three-flavor cases, respectively. We show that there is no spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the original soft-wall model. After detailed analysis, we find that in order to realize chiral symmetry breaking and restoration, both profiles for the scalar potential and the dilaton field are essential. The scalar potential determines the possible solution structure of the chiral condensate, except the mass term, it takes another quartic term for the two-flavor case, and f…
The average phase factor of the QCD fermion determinant signals the strength of the QCD sign problem. We compute the average phase factor as a function of temperature and baryon chemical potential using a two-flavor NJL model. This allows us to study the strength of the sign problem at and above the chiral transition. It is discussed how the $U_A(1)$ anomaly affects the sign problem. Finally, we study the interplay between the sign problem and the endpoint of the chiral transition.
