We introduce a cap product pairing for homology and cohomology of tropical cycles on integral affine manifolds with singularities. We show the pairing is perfect over $\mathbb{Q}$ in degree one when the manifold has at worst symple singularities. By joint work with Siebert, the pairing computes period integrals and its perfectness implies the versality of canonical Calabi-Yau degenerations. We also give an intersection theoretic application for Strominger-Yau-Zaslow fibrations. The treatment of the cap product and Poincaré-Lefschetz by simplicial methods for constructible sheaves might be of independent interest.
Given a smooth projective toric variety X, we construct an A-infinity category of Lagrangians with boundary on a level set of the Landau-Ginzburg mirror of X. We prove that this category is quasi-equivalent to the DG category of line bundles on X. This establishes part of the Homological Mirror Conjecture for toric varieties.
The tropical (p, q)-homology groups of Itenberg, Katzarkov, Mikhalkin and Zharkov are the tropical analogues of the Hodge decomposition of the cohomology of complex algebraic varieties. There is a well-defined intersection pairing on tropical (1, 1)-classes of a compact non-singular tropical surface. Here we compute directly the (1, 1)-homology of a non-singular floor decomposed tropical surface in tropical projective space, along with the intersection form.
We introduce a sheaf-theoretic approach to tropical homology, especially for tropical homology with potentially non-compact supports. Our setup is suited to study the functorial properties of tropical homology, and we show that it behaves analogously to classical Borel-Moore homology in the sense that there are proper push-forwards, cross products, and cup products with tropical cohomology classes, and that it satisfies identities like the projection formula and the Künneth theorem. Our framework allows for a natural definition of the tropical cycle class map, which we show to be a natural tra…
We compute the $S_n$-equivariant rational homology of the tropical moduli spaces $Δ_{2,n}$ for $n\leq 8$ using a cellular chain complex for symmetric $Δ$-complexes in Sage.
Given a tropical variety X and two non-negative integers p and q we define homology group $H_{p,q}(X)$. We show that if X is a smooth tropical variety that can be represented as the tropical limit of a 1-parameter family of complex projective varieties, then $\dim H_{p,q}(X)$ coincides with the Hodge number $h^{p,q}$ of a general member of the family.
The aim of this paper is to study homological properties of tropical fans and to propose a notion of smoothness in tropical geometry, which goes beyond matroids and their Bergman fans and which leads to an enrichment of the category of smooth tropical varieties. Among the resulting applications, we prove the Hodge isomorphism theorem which asserts that the Chow rings of smooth unimodular tropical fans are isomorphic to the tropical cohomology rings of their corresponding canonical compactifications, and prove a slightly weaker statement for any unimodular fan. We furthermore introduce a notion…
Given a closed subvariety of an algebraic torus, the associated tropical variety is a polyhedral fan in the space of 1-parameter subgroups of the torus which describes the behaviour of the subvariety at infinity. We show that the link of the origin has only top rational homology if a genericity condition is satisfied. Our result is obtained using work of Tevelev and Deligne's theory of mixed Hodge structures.
In this article we explicitly compute equations of an Enriques surface via the involution on a K3 surface. We also discuss its tropicalization and compute the tropical homology, thus recovering a special case of the result of \cite{IKMZ}, and establish a connection between the dimension of the tropical homology groups and the Hodge numbers of the corresponding algebraic Enriques surface.
We prove a bound conjectured by Itenberg on the Betti numbers of real algebraic hypersurfaces near non-singular tropical limits. These bounds are given in terms of the Hodge numbers of the complexification. To prove the conjecture we introduce a real variant of tropical homology and define a filtration on the corresponding chain complex inspired by Kalinin's filtration. The spectral sequence associated to this filtration converges to the homology groups of the real algebraic variety and we show that the terms of the first page are tropical homology groups with $\mathbb{Z}_2$-coefficients. The …
We use tropical curves and toric degeneration techniques to construct closed embedded Lagrangian rational homology spheres in a lot of Calabi-Yau threefolds. We apply this construction to the tropical curves obtained from the 2875 lines on the quintic Calabi-Yau threefold. Each admissible tropical curve gives a Lagrangian rational homology sphere in the corresponding mirror quintic threefold and disjoint curves give pairwise homologous but non-Hamiltonian isotopic Lagrangians. We check in an example that $>300$ mutually disjoint curves (and hence Lagrangians) arise. We show that the weight of …
We study the topology of a space parametrizing stable tropical curves of genus g with volume 1, showing that its reduced rational homology is canonically identified with both the top weight cohomology of M_g and also with the genus g part of the homology of Kontsevich's graph complex. Using a theorem of Willwacher relating this graph complex to the Grothendieck-Teichmueller Lie algebra, we deduce that H^{4g-6}(M_g;Q) is nonzero for g=3, g=5, and g at least 7. This disproves a recent conjecture of Church, Farb, and Putman as well as an older, more general conjecture of Kontsevich. We also give …
We study the topology of the link $M^{\mathrm{trop}}_{g,n}[1]$ of the tropical moduli spaces of curves when g=2. Tropical moduli spaces can be identified with boundary complexes for $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$, as shown by Abramovich-Caporaso-Payne, so their reduced rational homology encodes top-weight rational cohomology of the complex moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$. We prove that $M^{\mathrm{trop}}_{2,n}[1]$ is an $n$-connected topological space whose reduced integral homology is supported in the top two degrees only. We compute the reduced Euler characteristic of $M^{\mathrm{trop}}_{g,n}[1]$ for…
The Bieri-Neumann-Strebel-Renz invariants $Σ^q(X,\mathbb{Z})\subset H^1(X,\mathbb{R})$ of a connected, finite-type CW-complex $X$ are the vanishing loci for Novikov-Sikorav homology in degrees up to $q$, while the characteristic varieties $\mathcal{V}^q(X) \subset H^1(X,\mathbb{C}^{\times})$ are the nonvanishing loci for homology with coefficients in rank 1 local systems in degree $q$. We show that each BNSR invariant $Σ^q(X,\mathbb{Z})$ is contained in the complement of the tropical variety associated to the algebraic variety $\mathcal{V}^{\le q}(X)$, and provide applications to several class…
We introduce tropical corals, balanced trees in a half-space, and show that they correspond to holomorphic polygons capturing the product rule in Lagrangian Floer theory for the elliptic curve. We then prove a correspondence theorem equating counts of tropical corals to punctured log Gromov--Witten invariants of the Tate curve. This implies that the homogeneous coordinate ring of the mirror to the Tate curve is isomorphic to the degree-zero part of symplectic homology, confirming a prediction of homological mirror symmetry.
We study how changing the weight datum $\mathcal{A}=(a_1,...,a_n)\in(\mathbb{Q}\cap(0,1])^n$ affects the topology of tropical moduli spaces $M_{g,\mathcal{A}}^{trop}$, $\overline{M}_{g,\mathcal{A}}^{trop}$ and $Δ_{g,\mathcal{A}}$ and the homology of the latter one. We show that for fixed $g$ and $n$, there are particular filtrations of these topological spaces which we can use to compute the reduced rational homology of $Δ_{g,\mathcal{A}}$ and the top weight cohomology of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,\mathcal{A}}$ of smooth $(g,\mathcal{A})$-stable algebraic curves.
Tropical manifolds are polyhedral complexes enhanced with certain kind of affine structure. This structure manifests itself through a particular cohomology class which we call the eigenwave of a tropical manifold. Other wave classes of similar type are responsible for deformations of the tropical structure. If a tropical manifold is approximable by a 1-parametric family of complex manifolds then the eigenwave records the monodromy of the family around the tropical limit. With the help of tropical homology and the eigenwave we define tropical intermediate Jacobians which can be viewed as tropic…
Classical Hopf manifolds are compact complex manifolds whose universal covering is $\mathbb{C}^d \setminus \{0\}$. We investigate the tropical analogues of Hopf manifolds, and relate their geometry to tropical contracting germs. To do this we develop a procedure called monomialization which transforms non-degenerate tropical germs into morphisms, up to tropical modification. A link is provided between tropical Hopf manifolds and the analytification of Hopf manifolds over a non-archimedean field. We conclude by computing the tropical Picard group and $(p,q)$-homology groups.
For a smooth proper variety over a $p$-adic field, the Brauer group and abelian fundamental group are related to the higher Chow groups by the Brauer-Manin pairing and the class field theory. We generalize this relation to smooth (possibly non-proper) varieties, using the motivic homology and the tame version of Wiesend's ideal class group. Several examples are discussed.
We present tools and definitions to study abstract tropical manifolds in dimension 2, which we call simply tropical surfaces. This includes explicit descriptions of intersection numbers of 1-cycles, normal bundles to some curves and tropical Chern cycles and numbers. We provide a new method for constructing tropical surfaces, called the tropical sum, similar to the fiber sum of usual manifolds. We prove a tropical adjunction formula for curves in compact tropical surfaces satisfying a local condition, a partial Castelnuovo-Enriques criterion for contracting (-1)-curves, and also invariance of …
We study a space of genus $g$ stable, $n$-marked tropical curves with total edge length $1$. Its rational homology is identified both with top-weight cohomology of the complex moduli space $M_{g,n}$ and with the homology of a marked version of Kontsevich's graph complex, up to a shift in degrees. We prove a contractibility criterion that applies to various large subspaces. From this we derive a description of the homotopy type of the tropical moduli space for $g = 1$, the top weight cohomology of $M_{1,n}$ as an $S_n$-representation, and additional calculations for small $(g,n)$. We also deduc…
Let $X$ be a smooth proper scheme over a field of characteristic 0. Following D. Shklyarov [10], we construct a (non-degenerate) pairing on the Hochschild homology of $\per{X}$, and hence, on the Hochschild homology of $X$. On the other hand the Hochschild homology of $X$ also has the Mukai pairing (see [1]). If $X$ is Calabi-Yau, this pairing arises from the action of the class of a genus 0 Riemann-surface with two incoming closed boundaries and no outgoing boundary in $\text{H}_{0}({\mathcal M}_0(2,0))$ on the algebra of closed states of a version of the B-Model on $X$. We show that these pa…
We study the Hochschild homology of smooth spaces, emphasizing the importance of a pairing which generalizes Mukai's pairing on the cohomology of K3 surfaces. We show that integral transforms between derived categories of spaces induce, functorially, linear maps on homology. Adjoint functors induce adjoint linear maps with respect to the Mukai pairing. We define a Chern character with values in Hochschild homology, and we discuss analogues of the Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem and the Cardy Condition from physics. This is done in the context of a 2-category which has spaces as its objects and…
We generalize the standard combinatorial techniques of toric geometry to the study of log Calabi-Yau surfaces. The character and cocharacter lattices are replaced by certain integral linear manifolds described by Gross, Hacking, and Keel, and monomials on toric varieties are replaced with the canonical theta functions which GHK defined using ideas from mirror symmetry. We describe the tropicalizations of theta functions and use them to generalize the dual pairing between the character and cocharacter lattices. We use this to describe generalizations of dual cones, Newton and polar polytopes, M…
We study the Hochschild structure of a smooth space or orbifold, emphasizing the importance of a pairing defined on Hochschild homology which generalizes a similar pairing introduced by Mukai on the cohomology of a K3 surface. We discuss those properties of the structure which can be derived without appealing to the Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg isomorphism and Kontsevich formality, namely: -- functoriality of homology, commutation of push-forward with the Chern character, and adjointness with respect to the generalized pairing; -- formal Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch and the Cardy condition from phy…
The periodic cyclic homology of any proper dg category comes equipped with a canonical pairing. We show that in the case of the dg category of matrix factorizations of an isolated singularity the canonical pairing can be identified with the so-called higher residue pairing on the twisted de Rham cohomology of the singularity.
For an arbitrary proper DG algebra A (i.e. DG algebra with finite dimensional total cohomology) we introduce a pairing on the Hochschild homology of A and present an explicit formula for a Chern-type character of an arbitrary perfect A-module (the Chern characters take values in the Hochschild homology of A). The Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formula in this context expresses the Euler characteristic of the Hom-complex between two perfect A-modules in terms of the pairing of their Chern characters. We mention two examples of proper DG algebras and the HRR formulas for them. The first example is Ring…
We define homology groups for flat irregular singular connections on surfaces and a pairing between these and the de Rham cohomology of the connection, generalizing work of S. Bloch and H. Enault in dimension one. Assuming a conjecture of C. Sabbah (known to be true if the rank of the vector bundle is at most 5), we prove perfectness of the pairing. We comment on certain new phenomena appearing in dimension two.
We define a period pairing for flat, irregular singular, rank one connections, satisfying a technical condition regarding its stationary set, on complex surfaces between de Rham cohomology of the connection and a modified singular homology, the rapid decay homology. We prove that this gives a perfect duality. A 2-dimensional version of confluent hypergeometrics are contructed as an example.
