Local actions (actions of a vertex stabiliser on the neighbours of that vertex) have become an important approach to group actions on trees since J. Tits' introduction in 1970 of the independence property (P) and especially since a 2000 paper by M. Burger and Sh. Mozes. This `local-to-global' approach has been critical in the development of the theory of totally disconnected locally compact groups because it allows the construction of nondiscrete group actions on trees while keeping control over the action of a vertex stabiliser, in a way that is not practical under the classical Bass-Serre approach. The majority of constructions of nonlinear nondiscrete locally compact simple groups use (P) and its generalisations.
In this article we give a full classification and description of all closed group actions on trees with Tits' independence property (P) using a new coherent theory for local actions that applies to all actions on trees. This theory is a `local action' complement to classical Bass-Serre theory. On the one hand, our theory gives a decomposition of a group acting on a tree into a `local action diagram' (a decorated graph that encodes all `local' information), and on the other hand a construction of a group acting on a tree from a given local action diagram. One can read directly from the local action diagram whether the resulting group has certain properties, like geometric density, compact generation and simplicity.
We prove the Tits Alternative for groups acting on $2$-dimensional "recurrent" complexes with uniformly bounded cell stabilisers. This class of complexes includes, among others: $2$-dimensional Euclidean buildings, $2$-dimensional systolic complexes, $B(6)$-small cancellation complexes, and standard Cayley complexes for Artin groups of extra-large type. In the appendix written jointly with Jon McCammond we extend the result to a class of $2$-dimensional Artin groups containing all large-type Artin groups.
Given a toric affine algebraic variety $X$ and a collection of one-parameter unipotent subgroups $U_1,\ldots,U_s$ of $\mathop{\rm Aut}(X)$ which are normalized by the torus acting on $X$, we show that the group $G$ generated by $U_1,\ldots,U_s$ verifies the following alternative of Tits' type: either $G$ is a unipotent algebraic group, or it contains a non-abelian free subgroup. We deduce that if $G$ is $2$-transitive on a $G$-orbit in $X$, then $G$ contains a non-abelian free subgroup, and so, is of exponential growth.
Artin-Tits groups act on a certain delta-hyperbolic complex, called the "additional length complex". For an element of the group, acting loxodromically on this complex is a property analogous to the property of being pseudo-Anosov for elements of mapping class groups. By analogy with a well-known conjecture about mapping class groups, we conjecture that "most" elements of Artin-Tits groups act loxodromically. More precisely, in the Cayley graph of a subgroup $G$ of an Artin-Tits group, the proportion of loxodromically acting elements in a ball of large radius should tend to one as the radius t…
We show that for any finitely generated group of matrices that is not virtually solvable, there is an integer m such that, given an arbitrary finite generating set for the group, one may find two elements a and b that are both products of at most m generators, such that a and b are free generators of a free subgroup. This uniformity result improves the original statement of the Tits alternative.
We show that the automorphism group of a one-dimensional full shift (the group of reversible cellular automata) does not satisfy the Tits alternative. That is, we construct a finitely-generated subgroup which is not virtually solvable yet does not contain a free group on two generators. We give constructions both in the two-sided case (spatially acting group $\Z$) and the one-sided case (spatially acting monoid $\N$, alphabet size at least eight). Lack of Tits alternative follows for several groups of symbolic (dynamical) origin: automorphism groups of two-sided one-dimensional uncountable sof…
Given a locally finite leafless tree $ T $, various algebraic groups over local fields might appear as closed subgroups of $ \text{Aut} (T)$. We show that the set of closed cocompact subgroups of $ \text{Aut} (T)$ that are isomorphic to a quasi-split simple algebraic group is a closed subset of the Chabauty space of $ \text{Aut} (T)$. This is done via a study of the integral Bruhat$-$Tits model of $ \text{SL}_2 $ and $ \text{SU}_3^{L/K} $, that we carry on over arbitrary local fields, without any restriction on the (residue) characteristic. In particular, we show that in residue characteristic…
We give a conjectural classification of virtually cocompactly cubulated Artin-Tits groups (i.e. having a finite index subgroup acting geometrically on a CAT(0) cube complex), which we prove for all Artin-Tits groups of spherical type, FC type or two-dimensional type. A particular case is that for $n \geq 4$, the $n$-strand braid group is not virtually cocompactly cubulated.
We introduce certain directed multigraphs with extra structure, called Weyl graphs, which model quotients of Tits buildings by type-preserving chamber-free group actions. Their advantage over complexes of groups, which are often used for the CAT(0) Davis realization of buildings, is that Weyl graphs exploit the ultimate combinatorial W-metric structure of buildings. Weyl graphs generalize Tits's chambers systems of type M by allowing 2-residues to be quotients of generalized polygons by flag-free group actions, and Weyl graphs are easily constructed by amalgamating such quotients. We develop c…
The fixed point building of a polarity of a Moufang quadrangle of type $F_4$ is a Moufang set, as is the fixed point building of a semi-linear automorphism of order $2$ of a Moufang octagon that stabilizes at least two panels of one type but none of the other. We show that these two classes of Moufang sets are, in fact, the same, that each member of this class can be constructed as the fixed point building of a group of order $4$ acting on a building of type $F_4$ and that the group generated by all the root groups of any one of these Moufang sets is simple.
We prove a Tits alternative theorem for groups acting on CAT(0) cubical complexes. Namely, suppose that $G$ is a group for which there is a bound on the orders of its finite subgroups. We prove that if $G$ acts properly on a finite-dimensional CAT(0) cubical complex, then either $G$ contains a free subgroup of rank 2 or $G$ is finitely generated and virtually abelian. In particular the above conclusion holds for any group $G$ with a free action on a finite-dimensional CAT(0) cubical complex.
We prove a version of the Tits alternative for groups acting on complete, finite rank median spaces. This shows that group actions on finite rank median spaces are much more restricted than actions on general median spaces. Along the way, we extend to median spaces the Caprace-Sageev machinery and part of Hagen's theory of unidirectional boundary sets.
We prove the following rank rigidity result for proper CAT(0) spaces with one-dimensional Tits boundaries: Let $Γ$ be a group acting properly discontinuously, cocompactly, and by isometries on such a space $X$. If the Tits diameter of $\partial X$ equals $π$ and $Γ$ does not act minimally on $\partial X$, then $\partial X$ is a spherical building or a spherical join. If $X$ is also geodesically complete, then $X$ is a Euclidean building, higher rank symmetric space, or a nontrivial product. Much of the proof, which involves finding a Tits-closed convex building-like subset of $\partial X$, doe…
We prove that an IRS of a group with a geometrically dense action on a CAT(0) space also acts geometrically densely; assuming the space is either of finite telescopic dimension or locally compact with finite dimensional Tits boundary. This can be thought of as a Borel density theorem for IRSs.
We give an explicit construction of the Ree groups of type $G_2$ as groups acting on mixed Moufang hexagons together with detailed proofs of the basic properties of these groups contained in the two fundamental papers of Tits on this subject. We also give a short proof that the norm of a Ree group is anisotropic.
In this note, we give new examples of type I groups generalizing a previous result of Ol'shanskii. More precisely, we prove that all closed non-compact subgroups of Aut(T_d) acting transitively on the vertices and on the boundary of a d-regular tree and satisfying Tits' independence property are type I groups. We claim no originality as we use standard ingredients: the polar decomposition of those groups and the admissibility of all their irreducible unitary representations.
We study groups of bimeromorphic and biholomorphic automorphisms of projective hyperkähler manifolds. Using an action of these groups on some non-positively curved space, we deduce many of their properties, including finite presentation, strong form of Tits' alternative and some structural results about groups consisting of transformations with infinite order.
We prove that any group acting essentially without a fixed point at infinity on an irreducible finite-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex contains a rank one isometry. This implies that the Rank Rigidity Conjecture holds for CAT(0) cube complexes. We derive a number of other consequences for CAT(0) cube complexes, including a purely geometric proof of the Tits Alternative, an existence result for regular elements in (possibly non-uniform) lattices acting on cube complexes, and a characterization of products of trees in terms of bounded cohomology.
We study groups acting on CAT(0) square complexes. In particular we show if Y is a nonpositively curved (in the sense of A. D. Alexandrov) finite square complex and the vertex links of Y contain no simple loop consisting of five edges, then any subgroup of the fundamental group of Y either is virtually free abelian or contains a free group of rank two. In addition we discuss when a group generated by two hyperbolic isometries contains a free group of rank two and when two points in the ideal boundary of a CAT(0) 2-complex at Tits distance $π$ apart are the endpoints of a geodesic in the 2-comp…
Let $A\neq A_1, A_2, I_{2m}$ be an irreducible Artin--Tits group of spherical type. We show that periodic elements of $A$ and the elements preserving some parabolic subgroup of $A$ act elliptically on the additional length graph $\mathcal{C}_{AL}(A)$, an hyperbolic, infinite diameter graph associated to $A$ constructed by Calvez and Wiest to show that $A/Z(A)$ is acylindrically hyperbolic. We use these results to find an element $g\in A$ such that $\langle P,g \rangle\cong P* \langle g \rangle$ for every proper standard parabolic subgroup $P$ of $A$. The length of $g$ is uniformly bounded with…
We study the group Tame(SL$_2$) of tame automorphisms of a smooth affine 3-dimensional quadric, which we can view as the underlying variety of SL(2,$\mathbb{C}$). We construct a square complex on which the group admits a natural cocompact action, and we prove that the complex is CAT(0) and hyperbolic. We propose two applications of this construction: We show that any finite subgroup in Tame(SL$_2$) is linearizable, and that Tame(SL$_2$) satisfies the Tits alternative.
We introduce the notion of the $k$-closure of a group of automorphisms of a locally finite tree, and give several examples of the construction. We show that the $k$-closure satisfies a new property of automorphism groups of trees that generalises Tits' Property $P$. We prove that, apart from some degenerate cases, any non-discrete group acting on a tree with this property contains an abstractly simple subgroup.
Serre in "Trees" laid down the fundamentals of the theory of groups acting on simplicial trees. In particular, Bass-Serre theory makes it possible to extract information about the structure of a group from its action on a simplicial tree. Serre's original motivation was to understand the structure of certain algebraic groups whose Bruhat--Tits buildings are trees. In this survey we will discuss the following generalizations of ideas from "Trees": the theory of isometric group actions on $Λ$-trees and the theory of lattices in the product of trees where we describe in more detail results on ari…
Let $Γ$ be a Coxeter graph, let $(W,S)$ be its associated Coxeter system, and let $(A,Σ$) be its associated Artin-Tits system. We regard $W$ as a reflection group acting on a real vector space $V$. Let $I$ be the Tits cone, and let $E_Γ$ be the complement in $I +iV$ of the reflecting hyperplanes. Recall that Charney, Davis, and Salvetti have constructed a simplicial complex $Ω(Γ)$ having the same homotopy type as $E_Γ$. We observe that, if $T \subset S$, then $Ω(Γ_T)$ naturally embeds into $Ω(Γ)$. We prove that this embedding admits a retraction $π_T: Ω(Γ) \to Ω(Γ_T)$, and we deduce several to…
Automorphism groups of locally finite trees provide a large class of examples of simple totally disconnected locally compact groups. It is desirable to understand the connections between the global and local structure of such a group. Topologically, the local structure is given by the commensurability class of a vertex stabiliser; on the other hand, the action on the tree suggests that the local structure should correspond to the local action of a stabiliser of a vertex on its neighbours. We study the interplay between these different aspects for the special class of groups satisfying Tits' in…
We described in [M1] a monoid acting on the integrable highest weight modules of a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra. It has similar structural properties as a reductive algebraic monoid with unit group a Kac-Moody group. Now we find natural extensions of the action of the Kac-Moody group on its building to actions of this monoid. These extensions are partly motivated by representation theory and the combinatorics of the faces of the Tits cone.
We prove a decomposition result for a group $G$ acting strongly transitively on the Tits boundary of a Euclidean building. As an application we provide a local to global result for discrete Euclidean buildings, which generalizes results in the locally compact case by Caprace--Ciobotaru and Burger--Mozes. Let $X$ be a Euclidean building without cone factors. If a group $G$ of automorphisms of $X$ acts strongly transitively on the spherical building at infinity $\partial X$, then the $G$-stabilizer of every affine apartment in $X$ contains all reflections along thick walls. In particular $G$ act…
We study the group $C^*$-algebras $C^*_{L^{p+}}(G)$ - constructed from $L^p$-integrability properties of matrix coefficients of unitary representations - of locally compact groups $G$ acting on (semi-)homogeneous trees of sufficiently large degree. These group $C^*$-algebras lie between the universal and the reduced group $C^*$-algebra. By directly investigating these $L^p$-integrability properties, we first show that for every non-compact, closed subgroup $G$ of the automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(T)$ of a (semi-)homogeneous tree $T$ that acts transitively on the boundary $\partial T$ and ev…
By constructing a new unitary representation we prove the universal group $U(F)^+$ of Burger--Mozes does not have the Howe--Moore property when $F$ is primitive but not $2$-transitive. It is well known $U(F)^+$ does have this property when $F$ is $2$-transitive. Along the way, we give a characterization of the universal group, when $F$ is primitive, to have the Howe--Moore property, and also prove $U(F)^+$ has the relative Howe--Moore property. These two results are a consequence of a strengthening of Mautner's phenomenon for locally compact groups acting on d-regular trees and having Tits' in…
Motivated by the problem of finding a "well-foundedness principle" for totally disconnected, locally compact (t.d.l.c.) groups, we introduce a class $\mathscr{E}^{\mathscr{S}}$ of t.d.l.c. groups, containing P. Wesolek's class $\mathscr{E}$ of (regionally) elementary groups but also including many groups in the class $\mathscr{S}$ of nondiscrete compactly generated topologically simple t.d.l.c. groups. The class $\mathscr{E}^{\mathscr{S}}$ carries a well-behaved rank function and is closed under taking directed unions, open subgroups, closed normal subgroups, extensions and quotients. The clas…
Let G be a group acting geometrically on a CAT(0) cube complex X. We prove first that G is hyperbolic relative to the collection P of subgroups if and only if the simplicial boundary of X is the disjoint union of a nonempty discrete set, together with a pairwise-disjoint collection of subcomplexes corresponding, in the appropriate sense, to elements of P. As a special case of this result is a new proof, in the cubical case, of a Theorem of Hruska--Kleiner regarding Tits boundaries of relatively hyperbolic CAT(0) spaces. Second, we relate the existence of cut-points in asymptotic cones of a cub…
