We report on the experimental and theoretical investigation of magnetic-field-induced second harmonic generation (SHG) and two-photon absorption (TPA) of excited exciton states ($n \geq 3$) of the yellow series in Cu$_2$O. In this centrosymmetric material, SHG can occur due to constructive interplay of electric dipole and electric quadrupole/magnetic dipole transitions for light propagating along the low-symmetry directions [111] or [112]. By application of a magnetic field in Voigt configuration, SHG gets also allowed for excitation along the [110]-axis and even the high-symmetry cubic direction [001]. Combining a symmetry analysis and a microscopic theory, we uncover the two key contributions to the magnetic-field-induced SHG: the Zeeman effect and the magneto-Stark effect. We demonstrate systematic dependencies of the SHG intensity on the linear polarization angles of the ingoing fundamental laser and the outgoing SHG beam. In general, the resulting contour plots in combination with a symmetry analysis allow one to determine uniquely the character of involved transitions. Moreover, we can separate in magnetic field the Zeeman and the magneto-Stark effect through appropriate choice of the experimental geometry and polarization configuration. We present a microscopic theory of the second harmonic generation of excitons in a centrosymmetric cubic semiconductor taking into account the symmetry and the band structure of cuprous oxide. Based on the developed microscopic theory we identify the main contributions to the second-order nonlinear susceptibility of $S$-, $P$- and $D$-excitons. We analyze the redistribution of SHG intensities between the excitonic states both in the absence and presence of the magnetic field and show good agreement with the experimental data. With increasing exciton principal quantum number the magneto-Stark effect overpowers the influence of the Zeeman effect.
For a two-dimensional (2D) hole system (confined within Ge layers of a multilayered p-Ge/Ge_{1-x}Si_x heterostructure) described by Luttinger Hamiltonian with the g-factor highly anisotropic for orientations of magnetic field perpendicular and parallel to the 2D plane (g_perp >> g_par), reported is an observation of low-temperature transition from metallic (dR/dT > 0) to insulator (dR/dT < 0) behavior of resistivity R(T) induced by a perpendicular magnetic field B. The revealed positive magnetoresistance scales as a function of B/T. We attribute this finding to a suppression of the triplet cha…
The extrinsic dephasing of a hole spin confined to a self-assembled quantum dot is dominated by charge noise acting on an electric-field dependent g-factor. Here we propose the use of the optical Stark effect to reduce the sensitivity of the effective hole Zeeman energy to fluctuations in the local electric-field. Calculations using measured quantum dot parameters are presented, and demonstrate a factor of 10-100 reduction in the extrinsic dephasing. Compared to active stabilization methods, this technique should benefit from reduced experimental complexity.
We study non-equilibrium electronic transport through a quantum dot or impurity weakly coupled to ferromagnetic leads. Based on the rate equation formalism we derive noise spectra for the transport current. We show that due to quantum interference between different spin components of the current the spectrum develops a peak or a dip at the frequency corresponding to Zeeman splitting in the quantum dot. The detailed analysis of the spectral structure of the current is carried out for noninteracting electrons as well as in the regime of Coulomb blockade.
Magneto-optical properties of the quantum dot - impurity center (QD-IC) systems synthesized in a transparent dielectric matrix are considered. For the QD one-electron state description the parabolic model of the confinement potential is used. Within the framework of zero-range potential model and the effective mass approach, the light impurity absorption coefficient for the case of transversal polarization with respect to the applied magnetic field direction, with consideration of the QD size dispersion, has been analytically calculated. It is shown that for the case of transversal polarizatio…
The chiral anomaly-induced negative magnetoresistance and non-trivial Berry phase are two fundamental transport properties associated with the topological properties of Weyl fermions. In this work, we report the quantum transport of TaP single crystals in magnetic field up to 31T. Through the analyses of our magnetotransport data, we show TaP has the signatures of a Weyl state, including light effective quasiparticle masses, ultrahigh carrier mobility, as well as negative longitudinal magnetoresistance. Furthermore, we have generalized the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula for Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) …

We report experimental evidence of excitonic spin-splitting, in addition to the conventional Zeeman effect, produced by a combination of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, Stark shift and charge screening. The electric-field-induced modulation of the spin-splitting are studied during the charging and discharging processes of p-type GaAs/AlAs double barrier resonant tunneling diodes (RTD) under applied bias and magnetic field. The abrupt changes in the photoluminescence, with the applied bias, provide information of the charge accumulation effects on the device.
We report on a magneto-photoluminescence (PL) study of Mn modulation-doped InAs/InGaAs/InAlAs quantum wells. Two PL lines corresponding to the radiative recombination of photoelectrons with free and bound-on-Mn holes have been observed. In the presence of a magnetic field applied in the Faraday geometry both lines split into two circularly polarized components. While temperature and magnetic field dependences of the splitting are well described by the Brillouin function, providing an evidence for exchange interaction with spin polarized manganese ions, the value of the splitting exceeds the ex…
Circular polarization resolved magneto-infrared studies of multilayer epitaxial graphene (MEG) are performed using tunable quantum cascade lasers in high magnetic fields up to 17.5 T. Landau level (LL) transitions in the monolayer and bilayer graphene inclusions of MEG are resolved, and considerable electron-hole asymmetry is observed in the extracted electronic band structure. For monolayer graphene, a four-fold splitting of the $n=0$ to $n=1$ LL transition is evidenced and attributed to the lifting of the valley and spin degeneracy of the zeroth LL and the broken electron-hole symmetry. The …
We present a magneto-infrared spectroscopy study on a newly identified three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal ZrTe$_5$. We observe clear transitions between Landau levels and their further splitting under magnetic field. Both the sequence of transitions and their field dependence follow quantitatively the relation expected for 3D \emph{massless} Dirac fermions. The measurement also reveals an exceptionally low magnetic field needed to drive the compound into its quantum limit, demonstrating that ZrTe$_5$ is an extremely clean system and ideal platform for studying 3D Dirac fermions. The splitt…
We investigate and compare experimental and numerical excitonic spectra of the yellow series in cuprous oxide Cu$_2$O in the Voigt configuration and thus partially extend the results from Schweiner et al. [Phys. Rev. B 95, 035202 (2017)], who only considered the Faraday configuration. The main difference between the configurations is given by an additional effective electric field in the Voigt configuration, caused by the motion of the exciton through the magnetic field. This Magneto-Stark effect was already postulated by Gross et al. and Thomas et al. in 1961 [Sov. Phys. Solid State 3, 221 (1…
We present a theoretical study of the quantum magnetocapacitance of an ultrathin topological insulator film in an external magnetic field. The study is undertaken to investigate the interplay of the Zeeman interaction with the hybridization between the upper and lower surfaces of the thin film. Determining the density of states, we find that the electron-hole symmetry is broken when the Zeeman and hybridization energies are varied relative to each other. This leads to a change in the character of the magnetocapacitance at the charge neutrality point. We further show that in the presence of bot…
Through magneto-transport measurements and analysis of the observed Shubnikov de Haas oscillations in (010) (AlxGa1-x)2O3/Ga2O3 heterostructures, spin-splitting of the Landau levels in the (010) Ga2O3 two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) has been studied. Analysis indicates that the spin-splitting results from the Zeeman effect. By fitting the both the first and second harmonic of the oscillations as a function of magnetic field, we determine the magnitude of the Zeeman splitting to be 0.4$\hbarω_c$, with a corresponding effective g-factor of 2.7, for magnetic field perpendicular to the 2DEG.
Graphene on hexagonal boron-nitride (h-BN) is an atomically flat conducting system that is ideally suited for probing the effect of Zeeman splitting on electron transport. We demonstrate by magneto-transport measurements that a parallel magnetic field up to 30 Tesla does not affect the transport properties of graphene on h-BN even at charge neutrality where such an effect is expected to be maximal. The only magnetoresistance detected at low carrier concentrations is shown to be associated with a small perpendicular component of the field which cannot be fully eliminated in the experiment. Desp…

We investigate systematically how the interplay between Rashba spin-orbit interaction and Zeeman coupling affects the electron transport and the spin dynamics in InGaAs-based 2D electron gases. From the quantitative analysis of the magnetoconductance, measured in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field, we conclude that this interplay results in a spin-induced breaking of time reversal symmetry and in an enhancement of the spin relaxation time. Both effects, due to a partial alignment of the electron spin along the applied magnetic field, are found to be in excellent agreement with recent t…
We study conductance and adiabatic pumped charge and spin currents in a graphene quantum pump with Corbino geometry in the presence of an applied perpendicular magnetic field. The pump is driven by the periodic and out of phase modulations of the magnetic field and an electrostatic potential applied to the ring area of the pump. We show that the Zeeman splitting, despite of its smallness, can suppress the conductance oscillations at the zero doping and in a threshold value for the flux piercing the ring area which depends on the inner lead radius and thus on the flux penetrating in it. Moreove…
Transport properties of highly mobile 2D electrons are studied in symmetric GaAs quantum wells placed in titled magnetic fields. Quantum positive magnetoresistance (QPMR) is observed in magnetic fields perpendicular to the 2D layer. Application of in-plane magnetic field produces a dramatic decrease of the QPMR. This decrease correlates strongly with the reduction of the amplitude of Shubnikov de Haas resistance oscillations due to modification of the electron spectrum via enhanced Zeeman splitting. Surprisingly no quantization of the spectrum is detected when the Zeeman energy exceeds the hal…
Semiconductor holes with strong spin-orbit coupling allow all-electrical spin control, with broad applications ranging from spintronics to quantum computation. Using a two-dimensional hole system in a GaAs quantum well, we demonstrate a new mechanism of electrically controlling the Zeeman splitting, which is achieved through altering the hole wave vector $k$. We find a threefold enhancement of the in-plane $g-$factor $g_{\parallel}(k)$. We introduce a new method for quantifying the Zeeman splitting from magnetoresistance measurements, since the conventional tilted field approach fails for two-…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) hold great promise for future information processing applications utilizing a combination of electron spin and valley pseudospin. This unique spin system has led to observation of the valley Zeeman effect in neutral and charged excitonic resonances under applied magnetic fields. However, reported values of the trion valley Zeeman splitting remain highly inconsistent across studies. Here, we utilize high quality hBN encapsulated monolayer WSe$_2$ to enable simultaneous measurement of both intervalley and intravalley trion photoluminescence. We f…
Monolayers and multilayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) offer an ideal platform to explore valley-selective physics with promising applications in valleytronics and information processing. Here we manipulate the energetic degeneracy of the $\mathrm{K}^+$ and $\mathrm{K}^-$ valleys in few-layer TMDCs. We perform high-field magneto-reflectance spectroscopy on WSe$_2$, MoSe$_2$, and MoTe$_2$ crystals of thickness from monolayer to the bulk limit under magnetic fields up to 30 T applied perpendicular to the sample plane. Because of a strong spin-layer locking, the gro…
A weak parallel Zeeman field combined with the spin-orbit coupling can induce the supercurrent in an s-wave two-dimensional superconductor. At the same time, the thermodynamically equilibrium state of such a system is characterized by the helix phase where the order parameter varies in space as $\exp(i\mathbf{Qr})$. In this state the electric current that is induced by the Zeeman interaction is exactly counterbalanced by the current produced by the gradient of the order-parameter. We studied the interplay of the helix state and magnetoelectric current in the case of a varying in space Zeeman f…
We study a three-dimensional chiral second order topological insulator (SOTI) subject to a magnetic field. Via its gauge field, the applied magnetic field influences the electronic motion on the lattice, and via the Zeeman effect, the field influences the electronic spin. We compare two approaches to the problem: an effective surface theory, and a full lattice calculation. The surface theory predicts a massive Dirac spectrum on each of the gapped surfaces, giving rise to Landau levels once the surfaces are pierced by magnetic flux. The surface theory qualitatively agrees with our lattice calcu…
Magnetotransport measurements are a popular way of characterizing the electronic structure of topological materials and often the resulting datasets cannot be described by the well-known Drude model due to large, non-parabolic contributions. In this work, we focus on the effects of magnetic fields on topological materials through a Zeeman term included in the model Hamiltonian. To this end, we re-evaluate the simplifications made in the derivations of the Drude model and pinpoint the scattering time and Fermi velocity as Zeeman-term dependent factors in the conductivity tensor. The driving mec…
We study the magnetotransport of high-mobility electrons in monolayer and bilayer MoSe$_2$, which show Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations and quantum Hall states in high magnetic fields. An electron effective mass of 0.8$m_e$ is extracted from the SdH oscillations' temperature dependence; $m_e$ is the bare electron mass. At a fixed electron density the longitudinal resistance shows minima at filling factors (FFs) that are either predominantly odd, or predominantly even, with a parity that changes as the density is tuned. The SdH oscillations are insensitive to an in-plane magnetic field, con…
Phenomena that are highly sensitive to magnetic fields can be exploited in sensors and non-volatile memories. The scaling of such phenomena down to the single molecule level may enable novel spintronic devices. Here we report magnetoresistance in a single molecule junction arising from negative differential resistance that shifts in a magnetic field at a rate two orders of magnitude larger than Zeeman shifts. This sensitivity to the magnetic field produces two voltage-tunable forms of magnetoresistance, which can be selected via the applied bias. The negative differential resistance is caused …
A BCS-like variational wave-function, which is exact in the infinite field limit, is used to study the interplay among Zeeman energies, lateral confinement and particle correlations induced by the Coulomb interactions in strongly pumped neutral quantum dots. Band mixing effects are partially incorporated by means of field-dependent masses and g-factors. The spin polarization and the magneto-luminescence are computed as functions of the number of electron-hole pairs present in the dot and the applied magnetic field.
The phenomenon originating from spin-orbit coupling (SOC) provides energy-efficient strategies for spin manipulation and device applications. The broken inversion symmetry interface and resulting electric field induce a Rashba-type spin-orbit field (SOF), which has been demonstrated to generate spin-orbit torque for data storage applications. In this study, we found that spin flipping can be achieved by the valley-Zeeman SOF in monolayer WSe2 at room temperature, which manifests as a negative magnetoresistance in the vertical spin valve. Quantum transmission calculations based on an effective …
The response of semiconductor materials to external magnetic fields is a reliable approach to probe intrinsic electronic and spin-dependent properties. In this study, we investigate the common Zeeman splitting features of novel wurtzite materials, namely InP, InAs, and GaAs. We present values for the effective g-factors of different energy bands and show that spin-orbit coupling effects, responsible for the spin splittings, also have noticeable contributions to the g-factors. Within the Landau level picture, we show that the nonlinear Zeeman splitting recently explained in magneto photolumines…
We present a comprehensive optical study of the excitonic Zeeman effects in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers, which are discussed comparatively for selected materials: MoSe$_2$, WSe$_2$ and WS$_2$. We introduce a simple semi-phenomenological description of the magnetic field evolution of individual electronic states in fundamental sub-bands by considering three additive components: valley, spin and orbital terms. We corroborate the validity of the proposed description by inspecting the Zeeman-like splitting of neutral and charged excitonic resonances in absorption-type spectra. The v…
Monolayer WSe$_2$ hosts a series of exciton Rydberg states denoted by the principal quantum number n = 1, 2, 3, etc. While most research focuses on their absorption properties, their optical emission is also important but much less studied. Here we measure the photoluminescence from the 1s - 5s exciton Rydberg states in ultraclean monolayer WSe$_2$ encapsulated by boron nitride under magnetic fields from -31 T to 31 T. The exciton Rydberg states exhibit similar Zeeman shifts but distinct diamagnetic shifts from each other. From their luminescence spectra, Zeeman and diamagnetic shifts, we dedu…
A monolayer of a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) such as WSe$_2$ is a two-dimensional (2D) direct band-gap valley-semiconductor having an effective Honeycomb lattice structure with broken inversion symmetry. The inequivalent valleys in the Brillouin zone could be selectively addressed using circularly-polarized light fields, suggesting the possibility for magneto-optical measurement and manipulation of the valley pseudospin degree of freedom. Here we report such experiments that demonstrate the valley Zeeman effect -- strongly anisotropic lifting of the degeneracy of the valley pseudospi…
Magnetic tuning of the bound exciton states and corresponding giant Zeeman splitting (GZS) between σ^{+} and σ^{-} excitonic transitions in CdTe/Cd_{1-x}Mn_{x}Te quantum ring has been investigated in the Faraday configuration for various concentrations of Mn^{2+} ions, using the variational technique in the effective mass approximation. The sp-d exchange interaction between the localized magnetic impurity ions and the delocalized charge carriers has been accounted via mean-field theory with the inclusion of a modified Brillouin function. The enhancement of the GZS, and in turn, the effective g…
It is shown that in non-perturbative massless QED an anomalous magnetic moment is dynamically induced by an applied magnetic field. The induced magnetic moment produces a Zeeman splitting for electrons in Landau levels higher than $l=0$. The expressions for the non-perturbative Lande g-factor and Bohr magneton are obtained. Possible applications of this effect are outlined.
We investigate the effect of the interlayer spin-flip tunneling for the interlayer magnetoresistance under magnetic fields in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, which is a multilayer massless Dirac fermion system under pressure. The mean field of the spin-flip correlation associated with the interlayer Coulomb interaction enables the interlayer spin-flip tunneling. Assuming the non-vertical interlayer spin-flip tunneling, we calculate the interlayer magnetoresistance using the Kubo formula. The crossover magnetic field, at which the interlayer magnetoresistance changes from positive to negative is shifted b…
We have developed a theory of the longitudinal $g$ factor of light holes in semiconductor quantum wells. It is shown that the absolute value of the light-hole $g$-factor can strongly exceed its value in the bulk and, moreover, the dependence of the Zeeman splitting on magnetic field becomes non-linear in relatively low fields. These effects are determined by the proximity of the ground light-hole subband, $lh1$, to the first excited heavy-hole subband, $hh2$, in GaAs/AlGaAs-type structures. The particular calculations are performed in the framework of Luttinger Hamiltonian taking into account …
We studied the exciton energy in a type II quantum disk as a function of the magnetic field, disk radius R and height d. We found angular momentum transitions for dots with d >> 2R. Application of an electric field perpendicular to the disk showed a non-linear Stark shift. In the case of three vertically coupled dots angular momentum transistions were found for small interdot distances which disappeared with increasing interdot distance.
Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess coupling of spin and valley degrees of freedom, making them promising for spin-valleytronics. ln monolayer TMDs, the emission helicity is locked to the valleys as a consequence of spin-orbit coupling and inversion symmetry breaking, leading to a valley analog of Zeeman effect in presence of out-of-plane magnetic field. As inversion symmetry is recovered in bilayers, the emission helicity should no longer be locked to the valleys. Here we show that Zeeman splitting, however, still persists in bilayers, as a result of an additional …
We study the excess conductance due to the superconducting proximity effect in a ballistic two-dimensional electron system subject to an in-plane magnetic field. We show that under certain conditions the interplay of the Zeeman spin splitting and the effect of a screening supercurrent gives rise to a spin-selective Andreev enhancement of the conductance and anomalies in its voltage, temperature and magnetic field characteristics. The magnetic-field influence on Andreev reflection is discussed in the context of using superconducting hybrid junctions for spin detection.
We study the low-temperature magneto-photoluminescence (PL) from individual CdSe nanocrystals. Nanocrystals having a small "bright" exciton fine structure splitting ($<$0.5 meV) exhibit a conventional left- and right-circularly polarized Zeeman PL doublet in applied magnetic fields. In contrast, nanocrystals with large fine structure splitting ($>$1 meV) show an anomalous magneto-PL polarization, wherein the lower-energy peak becomes circularly polarized with increasing field, while the higher-energy peak remains linearly polarized. This unusual behavior arises from strong mixing between the a…
We study the magnetoelectric coupling at the surface of a topological insulator. We are in particular interested in the surface current induced by a static Zeeman/exchange field. This surface current can be related to the orbital magnetization of the system. For an insulator with zero Chern number, the orbital magnetization is independent of the details at the boundary. With the appearance of surface states in the topological insulator, it is not immediately obvious if the response is not affected by the conditions at the surface. We investigate this question using exact diagonalization to a l…
We utilize the coset construction to derive the effective field theory of magnon-phonon interactions in (anti)-ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic insulating materials. The action is used to calculate the equations of motion which generalize the Landau-Lifshitz and stress equations to allow for magneto-acoustic couplings to all orders in the fields at lowest order in the derivative expansion. We also include the symmetry breaking effects due to Zeeman, and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions. This effective theory is a toolbox for the study of magneto-elastic phenomena from first principles. As an e…
