Surface magnetic domains of a UCoGa single crystal during magnetization/demagnetization processes in increasing/decreasing magnetic fields were investigated by means of magnetic-force-microscopy (MFM) images at low temperatures. The observed domain structure is typical for a ferromagnet with strong uniaxial anisotropy. The evolution of magnetic domains during cooling of the crystal below TC has also been manifested by MFM images. Analysis of the available data reveals that the high uniaxial magnetocrystalline energy in combination with the relatively small ferromagnetic exchange interaction in UCoGa gives rise to the formation of very narrow domain walls formed by the pairs of the nearest U neighbor ions with antiparallel magnetic moments within the basal plane. Since the very high anisotropy energy is a common feature of the majority of the uniaxial U ferromagnets, analogous domain-wall properties are expected for all these materials.
In this paper, we report the results of a high pressure study of the itinerant 5f-electron ferromagnet UCoGa. The work is focused on probing the expected ferromagnet-to-paramagnet quantum phase transition induced by high pressure and on the general features of the P-T(-H) phase diagram. Diamond anvil cells were employed to measure the magnetization and electrical resistivity under pressures up to ~ 10 GPa.At ambient pressure, UCoGa exhibits collinear ferromagnetic ordering of uranium magnetic moments μU ~ 0.74 μB (at 2 K) aligned along the c-axis of the hexagonal crystal structure below Curie …
Single crystals of UCoGa have been grown in different conditions and subsequently annealed in order to provide a collection of samples representing various quality as to concentration of lattice defects. The different sample quality "grades" have been characterized by values of residual electrical resistivity. Correlations of magnetic parameters (coercive field, Curie temperature) with residual resistivity have been determined and domain-wall pinning by crystal defects has been confirmed as the underlying mechanism of coercive field in strongly anisotropic ferromagnets.
Spin and charge are two interrelated properties of electrons. However, most of previous works on topological matter study the electronic and magnonic excitations separately. In this paper, by combining density functional theory calculations with the Schwinger boson method, we determine the topological electronic band structures and topological magnon spectrum simultaneously in the ferromagnetic ground state of the narrow-band-gap CoCu3(OH)6Cl2, which is an ABC stacking Kagome lattice material with fractional occupancy on Cu sites. This material provides an ideal platform to study the interplay…
We investigate the current-driven magnetization dynamics in narrow Permalloy wires by means of Lorentz microscopy and electron holography. Current pulses are found to transform the magnetic structure in the uniformly magnetized state below the Curie temperature. A variety of magnetic states including reversed magnetic domains are randomly obtained in low probability. The dynamics of vortices found in most of observed magnetic states seems to play a key role in triggering the magnetization reversal.
Magnetic skyrmions have potential applications in next-generation spintronics devices with ultralow energy consumption. In this work, the current-driven skyrmion motion in a narrow ferromagnetic nanotrack with voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) is studied numerically. By utilizing the VCMA effect, the transport of skyrmion can be unidirectional in the nanotrack, leading to a one-way information channel. The trajectory of the skyrmion can also be modulated by periodically located VCMA gates, which protects the skyrmion from destruction by touching the track edge. In addition, the loc…
Spin transport equations in a non-homogeneous ferromagnet are derived in the limit where the sd exchange coupling between the electrons in the conduction band and those in the d band is dominant. It is shown that spin diffusion in ferromagnets assumes a tensor form. The diagonal terms are renormalized with respect to that in normal metals and enhances the dissipation in the magnetic system while the off-diagonal terms renormalize the precessional frequency of the conduction electrons and enhances the non-adiabatic spin torque. To demonstrate the new physics in our theory, we show that self-con…
Analogous to the Hall effect, the Nernst effect is the generation of a transverse voltage due to a temperature gradient in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The Nernst effect has promise for thermoelectric applications and as a probe of electronic structure. In magnetic materials, a so-called anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) is possible in zero magnetic field. Here we report a colossal ANE reaching 23 $μ$V/K in the ferromagnetic metal UCo$_{0.8}$Ru$_{0.2}$Al. Uranium's $5f$ electrons provide strong electronic correlations that lead to narrow bands, which are a known route to produci…
Using the angular dependence of the planar Hall effect in GaMnAs ferromagnetic films, we were able to determine the distribution of magnetic domain pinning fields in this material. Interestingly, there is a major difference between the pinning field distribution in as-grown and in annealed films, the former showing a strikingly narrower distribution than the latter. This conspicuous difference can be attributed to the degree of non-uniformity of magnetic anisotropy in both types of films. This finding provides a better understanding of the magnetic domain landscape in GaMnAs that has been the …
We use the synergy of infrared, terahertz, and Raman spectroscopies with DFT calculations to shed light on the magnetic and lattice properties of VI3. The structural transition at TS1 = 79 K is accompanied by a large splitting of polar phonon modes. Below TS1, strong ferromagnetic fluctuations are observed. The variations of phonon frequencies at 55 K induced by magnetoelastic coupling enhanced by spin-orbit interaction indicate the proximity of long-range ferromagnetic order. Below TC = 50 K, two Raman modes simultaneously appear and show dramatic softening in the narrow interval around the t…
We discuss a new narrow-gap ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductor alloy, In(1-x)Mn(x)Sb, and its growth by low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy. The magnetic properties were investigated by direct magnetization measurements, electrical transport, magnetic circular dichroism, and the magneto-optical Kerr effect. These data clearly indicate that In(1-x)Mn(x)Sb possesses all the attributes of a system with carrier-mediated FM interactions, including well-defined hysteresis loops, a cusp in the temperature dependence of the resistivity, strong negative magnetoresistance, and a large anomalous Hall ef…
Domains in BaTiO$_3$ induces a regular modulation of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in CoFeB via an inverse magnetostriction effect. As a result, the domain structures of the CoFeB wedge film and BaTiO$_3$ substrate correlate fully and straight ferroelectric domain boundaries in BaTiO$_3$ pin magnetic domain walls in CoFeB. We use x-ray photoemission electron microscopy and magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy to characterize the spin structure of the pinned domain walls. In a rotating magnetic field, abrupt and reversible transitions between two domain wall types occur, namely, narrow walls w…
We study current-induced domain-wall motion in a narrow ferromagnetic wire. We propose a way to move domain walls with a resonant time-dependent current which dramatically decreases the Ohmic losses in the wire and allows to drive the domain wall with higher speed without burning the wire. For any domain wall velocity we find the time-dependence of the current needed to minimize the Ohmic losses. Below a critical domain-wall velocity specified by the parameters of the wire the minimal Ohmic losses are achieved by dc current. Furthermore, we identify the wire parameters for which the losses red…
The van der Waals ferromagnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ has recently attracted extensive research attention due to its intertwined magnetic, electronic and topological properties. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the temperature evolution of the electronic structure of bulk Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. We observe largely dispersive energy bands that are narrowed by a factor of 1.6 compared with ab-initio calculation. Upon heating towards the ferromagnetic transition near 225 K, we observe a massive reduction of quasiparticle coherence in a large ener…
Ferroelectric materials are spontaneous symmetry breaking systems characterized by ordered electric polarizations. Similar to its ferromagnetic counterpart, a ferroelectric domain wall can be regarded as a soft interface separating two different ferroelectric domains. Here we show that two bound state excitations of electric polarization (polar wave), or the vibration and breathing modes, can be hosted and propagate within the ferroelectric domain wall. Specially, the vibration polar wave has zero frequency gap, thus is constricted deeply inside ferroelectric domain wall, and can propagate eve…
Polarized Raman scattering spectra of the K_xCo_{2-y}Se_2 single crystals reveal the presence of two phonon modes, assigned as of the A_{1g} and B_{1g} symmetry. Absence of additional modes excludes the possibility of vacancy ordering, unlike in K_xFe_{2-y}Se_2. The ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition at T_c\approx 74 K leaves a clear fingerprint on the temperature dependence of the Raman mode energy and linewidth. For T>T_c the temperature dependence looks conventional, driven by the thermal expansion and anharmonicity. The Raman modes are rather broad due to the electron-phonon coupling incr…
We numerically compute current-induced spin-transfer torques for antiferromagnetic domain walls, based on a linear response theory in a tight-binding model. We find that, unlike for ferromagnetic domain wall motion, the contribution of adiabatic spin torque to antiferromagnetic domain wall motion is negligible, consistent with previous theories. As a result, the non-adiabatic spin-transfer torque is a main driving torque for antiferromagnetic domain wall motion. Moreover, the non-adiabatic spin-transfer torque for narrower antiferromagnetic domain walls increases more rapidly than that for fer…
We present the complete zero temperature phase diagram of a model for ultrathin films with perpendicular anisotropy. The whole parameter space of relevant coupling constants is studied in first order anisotropy approximation. Because the ground state is known to be formed by perpendicular stripes separated by Bloch walls, a standard variational approach is used, complemented with specially designed Monte Carlo simulations. We can distinguish four regimes according to the different nature of striped domains: a high anisotropy Ising regime with sharp domain walls, a saturated stripe regime with …
